I love Dubai, it’s my 10th year here but I’m afraid that I have to leave soon. I lost my job in 2012, decided to do a complete career change and started my own business. I haven’t been able to make the business profitable so been job hunting since January; lots of applications, few good interviews but in the end nothing. My CV is good but in some cases I’m too experienced – or some important experience is missing. I feel super sad if I have to leave from the place I’m so passionate about – I love the international environment, sun etc. I’m curious that there’s so many new people coming to Dubai all the time; from where they are finding all the jobs? The situation would be totally different if I would have husband’s support but I’m single so I’m responsible for my rent, medical insurance etc. Mid June is my deadline – if nothing comes up, then there will be lots of tears :(

Stinks... 1k & 5k are little money if he is getting a director/executive level job but any 'professional' shouldn't be using hotmail email address for work! And if companies are recruiting via consultants, they will pay. One friend of mine just paid USD800 for some service in the US and said they are very professional; he only started job hunt a few weeks ago. Monster.com was asking me to pay USD200 for CV services. How is your husband's LinkedIn profile?

I love Iceland - I was there in May. Reykjavik is really a hip city, great restaurants and cute shops. The water is the best I've ever tasted - and air was soooo fresh I wanted to take some with me ;). Easy to travel via UK or Denmark for example; 3hrs from London to Reykjavik (and many Northern Europeans travel to the US via Reykjavik).

If you are traveling abroad, would the sms payment still work? I havent be able to send texts to some Dubai service numbers while traveling (for example to confirm doctor's appointment).

I think you can only book a flight for the next 12 months. Pick one date within one year and then change that later :) But also check the fare rules, ticket might be only valid for 12 months anyways.

The rule has been always there! Palm is not dog friendly and basically there's no place to walk them; dont know about the fronds but at least close to apartments. And I dont understand why dogs should come to this fantastic new jogging track - I love it for running/walking!

I think there should be lots of parking available in Media City on Fridays, for example the multi-floor building behind Radisson and field next to Lime Tree Cafe.

Be sure to tell her to do her Iris scan as she enters passport hall because I have stood in the main passport queue for 45 mins before only to be told to go and join the loooong iris scan queue and then back to the long passport queues. Thanks ladies for the replies - is iris scan required for everyone? My friend is from the EU country so getting visa on arrival.

One of these every few months :) my pet hate is space punctuation (it was so hot ! I could feel the sun on my face .). Why the space before the punctuation? My colleague from India always does that - maybe they learned it like that?

I just registered my number (as annoying as it was - because they already had my passport copy, etc) at DU last week. There was no que, I showed them my Emirates ID and was out of there less than 5 mins later. So no need to wait for the sms from DU? I'd love to do the registration now since my residence visa will be cancelled soon... otherwise I'd only have a landline like looooong time ago!

Maybe your company could allow you to stay on their visa for awhile (you might have to pay for it). Unfortunately not possible since they have to return lots of visas... Would have been excellent option for visa & insurance!

Thanks Chocs01! Yes, complicated topic... Car insurance is valid until summer 2013 or will that also lose its validity when my residence visa is getting cancelled? Some years ago tourists were able to get a short term UAE driving license and drive privately owned cars here but I think the law was changed. I didn't have any accidents in the UAE by far but of course don't want to risk that!

PibHb, it seems that I’m in a similar position as your husband. I worked for a company for 3 years in Europe and 7 years here in Dubai and was laid off a few weeks ago. I know that some off the colleagues who have been laid off have received the end of the service benefits for all their years with the company, not just for years in Dubai. In my case it’s not yet clear; HR is insisting that it just should be according to the UAE labor law.
