Hi Ladies, Four years of unsuccessful TTC here (unexplained infertility), and 2 failed IVFs at Fakih Clinic... We've got an appointment with Dr David Robertson at Bourn Hall next week - wish us luck! Ladyrola - huge congratulations on the pregnancy! Any of your feedback or advice on proceeding with treatment at Bourn Hall would be deeply appreciated.

Hi DubaiCat - Bought myself a thermometer and signed up to Fertility Friend today. It's good to feel I'm doing something positive. Fingers crossed it helps! At least it will be useful information to show to the doctor, if nothing else! :-)

Thank you DubaiCat! Hope you enjoyed your wine last night :-) My period came yesterday :-( so I treated myself to a beer - quite a rarity these days as I've cut right down on booze and caffeine for TTC. I use ovulation sticks and monitor my cervix position and CM so I have a good idea of when I should be fertile (though it's obviously not working!). Think I am going to try charting to make sure I'm actually ovulating - will go and get myself a thermometer today :-) Which clinica are Dr Elsa and Dr Sant at?

Hi DubaiCat, che731, Hannah33 and Dallydoo, Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your advice and support - it is hugely appreciated. Sorry - I've been offline for a while. I had a diagnostic HSG shortly after my last post which was absolutely awful - the most painful thing I've ever experienced - and it was pretty inconclusive too (although the doctor said she could see at least one clear tube). I have a feeling the doctor wasn't terribly competent to be honest as I've never heard of it being that bad (I was vomiting with the pain...). As you can imagine, we had a little break after that. Back trying every month now and back to the same disappointment. Think we're going to try one of the fertility clinics soon. I'm 35 this year and feel like we're running out of time :-( Leaving my job in a few months so I hope that might help as I'll be more rested and less stressed...

Hi Gilly, I've been seeing Dr Samah for a couple of years and totally agree. You really feel like she is on your side. Can I ask if you had a natural delivery or a C-section? Just from talking to friends it seems Medcare hospital does a lot of C-sections... Is Dr Samah pro-natural delivery?

Armani hotel in the Burj Khalifa has an awesome brunch - really classy, gorgeous food, limitless prosecco and just 300 AED, I think. It is Dubai's best kept secret! (Shhh)

Fantastic ideas here - really inspiring me to try something different the next time I have visitors out. Belinda, these trips sound amazing but I don't drive - do you know any good companies for Dibba / Khasab / Kalba tours? Globetrotter, I LOVE Global Village - just wrote a piece about it: www.homesickandheatstruck.com I agree - Bab al Shams is utterly blissful, Claire - some precious peace and quiet which is hard to come by in this city! :-)

Love it too! Lulu's in Barsha usually have the Tick Tock rooibos tea - and Holland and Barrett (Mirdiff Mall) always have it too... Also found some in Waitrose, Marina Mall last week - not a brand I knew but perfectly good. Hope you find some soon :-)

A Teacher's Perspective... Speaking as an experienced secondary school teacher, the only thing that works in the long term is sincere parental involvement, encouragement and role-modelling. If children see their parents are genuinely interested in reading, thinking and discovering new things and that they themselves dedicate time to this, it shapes their whole approach to education and work. Sharing activities (not doing tasks for them but being involved and in discussion with them about their tasks) from a young age means that this sort of work has positive associations for them. I have taught and tutored many children whose parents 'farm out' these tasks to paid help and the children are inevitably reluctant and miserable - they see work as punishment and increasingly become a passenger in their own education; they remain mentally passive - unable to be passionate about anything remotely intellectual - and see work as something to just 'get done'. With the top set children I teach, I have 100% attendance on parents evening and the parents are just as interested in the work as the children are (this is not a coincidence): not in the grades they get, but the work itself. In psychological terms, if the parent's focus is on the content of learning and the effort a child puts into it, children are much more motivated and encouraged. Too much focus on the final grades is very demotivating in the long-term and encourages terrified rote learning (the Choueifat system) and an inability to take risks or think innovatively and creatively. It's all about establishing a warm and positive environment for the work, having a regular but humane routine and using the work as a stimulus for family discussion. Just thought I'd throw that out there... Hope some of it is useful :-)

I agree - Lulu's in Al Barsha is cheap, has a great range and is often the quietest and cleanest of the big supermarkets - loads of good fresh fish, too... although they sometimes run out of stock of my favourite UK imports and it takes months for them to get them in again - very common amongst supermarkets out here, I've found! Waitrose has lots for different dietary requirements (I know they do the Mrs Crimble's gluten free macaroons and other yummy stuff...) and I go to M&S in MOE for some frozen and non-perishable things - oh how I wish they stocked their fresh and chilled range too! www.homesickandheatstruck.com

Not takeaway but good restauranty fish and chips to be had at The Wharf and Irish Village. Thanks for the yucky chip and poor customer service warning :-) Does anyone know what happened to the British Kitchen on Beach Road? Has it closed or relocated...?

Thanks, Hannah, Is there a fertility specialist in Dubai that you would recommend? Good luck with your TTC. Hopefully we'll both have good news one day soon x

Hi Dallydoo, Thank you so much for your detailed reply - congratulations on your pregnancy! - not long to wait now!! Yes - my doctor is very reassuring and just says it will take time, but my instinct is to get another opinion. I've heard the ob/gyns at Cooper Clinic are very good so I might give them a ring. Is there a particular fertility specialist you would recommend in Dubai? Can I ask - did you end up having IVF out here? And if so, was it expensive? Thank you again :-)

Hi Alismum - so glad you like the blog! Thanks for having a look :-) You're absolutely right - there are plenty of things that aren't great about the UK and plenty of things to appreciate about being here... Sometimes I just wish I could teleport home for a morning or an afternoon, just to get a little English autumn 'top up' :-)

:-) We used to live in West London near Kew Gardens and the autumn trees are just gorgeous at this time of year - particularly on a crisp, clear morning! Have started a blog about being a Brit in Dubai and coping with homesickness - do check it out if you have a minute www.homesickandheatstruck.com
