Thanks Chocobella, I liked the first option of IKEA but my DH doesn't like to have IKEA furniture :( The table size we are looking for is about 2 x 1 meters and shouldn't really be more than AED 2500 I have a solid wood table that I need to sell. Not sure of the dimensions as I am not at home right now, but can let you know later on this evening. It does need to be refinished, but is a lovely solid (and heavy!) table. Email me on 4sidekicks at g mail if you would like more info. Let me know either way so I can remove my email id. HTH

Ladies, can you help me!! I'm new to this process and have a few questions... We are looking to sponsor a maid whose Visa expires in about 12 days. She was sponsored by a family who is moving away, she found another job so her sponsor cancelled her visa. Her new employers never processed her visa and then backed out of sponsoring her. So my question is, for how long is she able to legally be in the country. If I read through everything correctly, our first step is taking her to have a medical test done and get the results back before we can start processing her Visa. I'm assuming this could take a few days or are results given immediately? Kaba, Out of curiosity, can you tell me where she is from and how old she is? You can email me on 4sidekicks at g mail as well if you would prefer. TIA I understand it will take between 10-15 days to complete the visa stamping process. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thank you so much!! edited by 4sidekicks on 07/02/2012

Hi.. I live very close to B6 and am a very nice neighbour!!!! B road is def the road to be in.. in my opinion the best out of B & C. The pool is hardly ever busy even at weekends :-) The road noise is not really bothersome and in B6 would be even better as it in the side area and not flat onto road, in anycase we are only on the slip road and not on the main bypass... Maintenance are great... come at the drop of a hat. Any more questions mail me.... amintoft at yahoo dot co dot uk Just emailed you so you can remove your email id! :)

Let me know how it works out and if you need the t-shirt you are more than welcome to have it as it is too small for DS now. In terms of food, we made "Nanaimo Bars" but that was before Tim Horton's arrived; you could always send timbits! Thread derailment... where did you shop to get the supplies for nanaimo bars? I went to C4 and choithrams this past xmas looking for the stuff to make it and I couldn't find what I needed. The timbits idea it a good one. Ok, searching my brain here as it was the first time I have ever made them......we bought the semi-sweet chocolate from C4 or Spinney's and melted it with the coconut etc., and bought the custard powder for the yellow part (lol) from Spinney's as well. I used the recipe from the City of Nanaimo website (we are from the Island, so thought that was funny!) http://www.nanaimo.ca/EN/main/visitors/NanaimoBars.html. I didn't add the almonds as my mom always made them without. HTH

Is there a Tim Hortons in Mirdif City Centre? :) I did hint I am lazy :) There is the one on SZR and one at the Outlet Mall....not sure of any other locations, but maybe someone else can help!

Sue, We have the black and white guy, so it is not him! Hi Ladies, I am still in Canada and wont be home until late tomorrow night. My friend at the other end has been trying to catch a black cat that she thinks might have an injured leg. If the cats are friendly chances are they have chips??? well, that could be too optomistic. Someone has been dumping cats in the area lately. I have been gone a month so have no idea. But....someone dumped a family and all were black exceptfor one....a neighbour took them in and rehomed so hopefully it is not one of those. Red I would be happy to help but I am not there. She needs to do the usual. Posters up at all vets...the list is on pets somewhere under Vet something, cant remember....go out at night....have her go to FF page and there is a checklist to help find. Call ff and reprt the cat missing...check dubizzle and also go to Al Wasl park....put up posters in the area etc.

Take Beach road towards Dubai, go through Al Manara, take the first U-turn, and then turn right at Saga World Mall (which is the last right before you get back to Al Manara), go to the end of the road, turn right and then park where you can. If you walk past the volleyball nets etc., you will see the kayaks on the beach and there will be someone sitting at a table close by. HTH edited by 4sidekicks on 07/01/2012

I have posted this on the maids forum as well and have placed an ad in the classifieds that have not been updated for the past couple of days, so re-posting here.... Hopefully someone can help........ We have just spent the last month waiting for our new maid to start as her current family is leaving Dubai. She has now decided she wants to go back to the Philippine’s leaving us in a really difficult situation as my husband and I both work full time and our son finishes school at 2:30. We are a Canadian family of 3 (plus a small dog and a rescue kitten) living in a villa in Umm Sequim 1. We are looking for someone who is honest and reliable with good references. I am trying to organize agency maids for the short term, but any recommendations are greatly appreciated by an increasingly desperate working mom!

We rescued a kitten about 12 days ago. Took her to Safa last week and they think she is about 6 weeks old. She needed the de-worming shot and some antibiotics as she has a cut on her leg and a general check up. It was in the range of AED 300. Will be taking her and our dog back the middle of next month for all of their shots. Safa really are the best!

Dorma makes operable walls, but the bulk of their work is project based, so they won't be cheap! Google them for contact details. You can also try a hunting down a glass manufacturer in Sharjah and see if they can do a one off for you, but may be more hassle than it is worth. I can look around for some contacts for you but have a really busy couple of days so may not be until the weekend/early next week.

Agree 100%. Now off to my next meeting..... Being a mum is the best job in the world, but it's also very hard work. If you are at home all day, it's tough. If you are out all day, it is also tough having to make up for the time that you weren't there. If you work, you feel guilty because you work. If you don't work, you feel like you are losing your work skills or that you are not doing enough with your LO etc. At the end of the day you have to do what works for you and your family. Nobody else has the right to criticise your decision, nobody knows why you have made it, and absolutely nobody has the right to make you feel guilty about it. Your LO loves you more than anyone else in the world, no matter what your decision is.

I am from and grew up Victoria, lived in Toronto and Calgary and been to Winnepeg once in the winter (never again) and once in the summer (never again). We are pretty spoilt on the west coast with our weather and the fact that we can do everything year round. It is not a place that I would ever consider as I hate the cold weather and mosquitos love me so that rules out the summer. That being said, when I lived in TO I met a lot of people from Winnepeg and for the most part are really nice friendly people. It all depends on what you are used to and looking for. I am sure it is a lovely place for families and you can actually afford a house there, unlike Victoria and Vancouver!

Wow, was looking at this thread this morning before I went to my first meeting of the day, and it has now gone completely crazy! I have a DS who is 5 and I work full time in the construction industry and travel throughout the GCC on a regular basis. I work longer hours but have more flexibility in my schedule than DH. It has been MY job that has brought us and kept us here, not DH's. When I travel DH makes sure that he is home by 5:30 to be with DS. I often schedule flights back so they can collect me at the airport before DS goes to bed. DH is in Abu Dhabi all day tomorrow and will not be back until after 8. I on the other hand will finish my last meeting at 4:30 and will head home to be with DS after that. Lady Luck, I have no idea what planet you are living on. God forbid something happens and YOU may have to go to work…. edited by 4sidekicks on 07/09/2011

DS will be starting KG2 at Raffles south. We will take turns dropping him in the morning and our maid will collect him at 2:30 0r 3:30 (if he is taking part in an after school activity). We live just around the corner, so it is less than a 5 minute drive to get there in the mornings. In the afternoon the maid will take a taxi to collect him. We looked into the school bus, but it is very expensive and based on the driving we have seen by school bus drivers and everyone in general over the past 4 years, we are not comfortable with that option for our family. DH finishes at 5 and is home by 5:30, so that only leaves DS with the maid for 2-3 hours per day. I have more flexibility with my schedule, but also work longer hours. There will be days when I am able to collect him as well. If there was ever an emergency, DH can leave the office at any time and I can as well (depending on where I am as I travel to Abu Dhabi and throughout the GCC regularly). This will take some coordinating and organising, but should hopefully work! Let us know if you have any other questions. HTH edited by 4sidekicks on 03/09/2011

I had this with my last employer and they told me it was "company policy" never had it before and my current employer did not request that information. I asked my old boss if we could do this as I had never actually received a pay slip with my salary! They just made one, back dated it to my last month of employment and stamped and signed it. I still have a very strong relationship with my old boss and the company so it was not an issue.
