One Christmas, years and years ago, we looked under the tree and were disgusted with ourselves. Since then only those under 18 get gifts, for the rest of us adults: we each pitch in a specific amount and we choose a charity to give the lump sum to- something different each year (usually we adopt a family in need so with our collected funds we get to go buy their wish list of items which is rewarding). For Birthdays we usually give nothing but a card, go out for a dinner, or just gift a little something... Mom still treats us to something small but during the year, whenever she buys us something she usually says "It's for your birthday", funnily enough we hear that a few times a year. Being in Dubai, I usually send flowers if it's an important celebration or a big number birthday :) Significant others still buy for each other (Birthdays and Christmas')

We finished Homeland last weekend and are now looking for another exciting drama to watch. Have recently watched Downton, G of T's (not G&T:-) and now Homeland. Any suggestions on another exciting series to watch? TIA If you enjoyed Homeland you'll probably like the suspense of The Killing (watch the US version). It has great characters, lots of twists, and is set in rainy Seattle which creates just the perfect mood. We really enjoy it- we're just waiting for season 3. Oh and have to always add- 6 Feet Under is still, and will probably always be, hands down, our favourite series. Although we've loved Homeland, The Killing, Deadwood, etc. nothing comes close to the entire series of 6 Feet Under. edited by andreasmullet on 21/03/2013

These kids are pretty fortunate. When I was in school we went to the local grocery store to see how bread was made and out to the farm to milk a cow. woo hoo.

Buy a small piece of wood, some blue paint, some white paint, and make your own! :) Probably a lot faster and less frustrating than chasing municipality. :D

Hi ladies - opinions please. What do we think of cravats? Am sorting our wedding blessing and hubby is wearing a dish dash :) Groomsmen will be in waistcoats with either ties or cravats (can't make them wear a jacket outside). Are cravats the preserve of Essex rude boys? Or do they make a gent look dashing? Thoughts please! :) My groomsmen wore only waistcoats and they looked awesome- very's 50's ish, we loved it and they didn't look like waiters! They looked very casual but still wedding-ish. :) I loved the look. They wore skinny ties with them. My husband wore the same type of suit but just added the jacket. All together they looked great... in my opinion! Whatever YOU choose to do is up to YOU! It's YOUR day (and hubby's I suppose ;) ) so go with what you really want and don't worry about everyone else.

The Antiques Museum has them. And they can customise them with engravings too. If you're not sure where to find the Antiques Museum (it's in Al Quoz) do a search on here and there's quite a few threads with good directions (I'd try but my directions are horrible.)

OK, my ds thinks I am SO not with it. I don't like the music (is that what you call it?) of "Harlem Shake", and just do not get the whole dance thing craze. "Ganugnam style" was fun, had a silly funky dance and had a catchy tune, (even though I could not pronounce most of the lyrics). But the sound of Harlem Shake is like fingernails on a chalkboard - and that statement alone shows my age :) Am I the only one that does not get it??? Greedy Cat- I'm with you. In which case you'll probably actually get a kick out of this one: [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJvRZ10lfCc'>link[/url'>

Maybe it has to do with this line "Work all night on a drink of rum". ??? That's all I could figure after reading the lyrics.

Who takes their kids to a concert during weekdays anyway with a show starting at 8.30? I thought kids were in bed by 8.30-9PM. ??? Most of the local kids are not even in bed before Midnight here! I am sure execptions must have been made regarding bedtime for the Beiber show. That's why the parents were so peeved when he came on at 10.30! People in this part of the world have very different routines. Lots of people here sleep in the afternoon. Not hat I would allow my kids out that late. Not here or in London. Especially on a school day. no disrespects but that's easy to say when you don't have any !! I could write a book on all the things i'd "never do when I have children".....but ended up doing lol Me too....I had answers ready too......it was all planned and Dh & I were in complete agreement. All of our plans went out of the window when we allowed her to sleep in our bed....and now she makes me take her out of school for a week mid-term to attend concerts at the O2 Arena....and I agree. We fly around the world, dictated to by the likes of Cyrus & Bieber. Hey Ho. Ok, I'm only a few months in with first child- and already doing things I said I'd "never do"... but CallMeMaybe: are you for real??? Ok, I might succumb to a concert here or there and have to begrudgingly tail along for supervision... but a week out of school to attend a couple of concerts. No way, I may do things I thought I never would agree to, but there's a line!!

Any update on this? Got quite a story from the cleaner next door (thought I'd ask her since the maids always seem to know what's going on!) but her story was that an ipad was stolen from one house. Impressed that the police would increase security so much for an ipad! ;)

I headed in to Adventure HQ at Times Square because I figured having less shops to browse around in, rather than going to Marina Mall for example, would prevent me from buying other cr@p I don't need! Anyways, just to note: they had heaps like Sky Kitty said, but nothing under 1 year. I bought a 1-2 year anyways as it does fit, loosely, but it does fit and he can grow into it now for quite awhile. It was ZOGGS brand, but their little matching hat was far too big. So, if you're actually interested in some for ages under 1-2 give some of the other suggestions below a try.

The Antiques museum in Al Quoz has some I think, and would be cheaper than the actual Khalifa souvenir shop. CallMeMaybe- not sure why you're left wondering? Maybe she's unable to get herself to the Burg gift shop hence why she's asking...

My husband is with Dubai Islamic, not sure if they're the same as Emirates Islamic No - different banks. EIB and ENBD are the same group Ah, I meant I wasn't sure if both Islamic banks follow the same rules in regards to the alcohol/bar thingy :)

My husband is with Dubai Islamic, not sure if they're the same as Emirates Islamic but our issues with them is that because it's an Islamic bank he has had trouble using his credit card at some movie theatres, Virgin, and, most frustrating, when we're back home. Any place that has the word "bar" in it or alcohol somehow related to it, even if we were just dining in the restaurant (ie. Joey's Lounge and Grill), the card won't work. We've been stuck quite a few times and it is annoying. That being said, he has appreciated that if he uses his card during travel they immediately block it until he contacts them as they think it's stolen (he usually ensures to simply call them prior to travel but has forgotten from time to time... then we're just impressed with their quick action). I have Emirates NBD and have to say I've never been let down. Haven't done much as far as banking is concerned, but easily transferred funds back home, easily applied to have paid off loans closed up when selling a vehicle, and never had an issue with my card. Also love that they courier new cards with very quick service.

If they can get out to Al Ain there's an amazing water park more geared for adults- a massive wave pool for surfing. Haven't been myself but heard it's incredible.

We are in the ranches and find access to the rest of the city pretty quick, especially now that the new overpass is finished, or nearly finished, over al khail- to get to Mall of the Emirates or over to Sheikh Zayed/Beach Road/Al Wasl area is now about 15 minutes, only one straight road! And, I love heading over to Mirdiff Mall, a bit more of a drive, maybe 20 minutes during quiet times on Emirates Road, but the access in and out is so fast and easy. We've been here four years and at first it seemed a little far out, but now it doesn't at all.

Please be careful of the unit you purchase and make sure it's safe and dog proof. I tried to do a thread search but came up empty handed, however there was a poster once who sadly lost both her pups while at work one day because the wires of the unit became loose and I belief the dogs suffered an electric shock from the wires and the water bowl. I could be wrong but I think something to that effect happened... just be sure your dog house with an AC is pup proof.

Andreamullet, this isn't a permanant show it's touring. http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/dralion/default.aspx A friend mentioned the other day that there was talk about a permanent show, like in Vegas but I think it fell through. edited by TimTam on 08/02/2013 Strange then that they would change the set up. The whole "tent" and organisation was a major part of the circus experience for us.

I don't have tickets to this show, but am surprised at the feedback. We went both times the Cirque came to Dubai years ago, when it was in the tent at Ibn, and it was incredibly organised. But, I believe then it was still organised by the Cirque itself and this was on it's tour- if I have it right I believe this is now organised by Dubai as it's a permanent show here? Or something to that affect?... Anyways, what a shame, at the previous shows the organisation and the speed at which the lines moved was something everyone spoke about, in a positive way!!

I like the Spinney's at Motor City because it's a one-stop-shop sort of deal... yup, I pay a bit more, but with baby in tow I have to say I love having to only go to one place and get decent fruit, veg, meat (plus the fact that they carry p0rk is pretty handy compared to going to C4 or Geant and then having to stop at Spinney's anyways). And one major plus for me, is it feels less chaotic- I always come out of Geant of C4 with a headache from the bright lights and the chaos... drives me batty. edited by andreasmullet on 03/02/2013

It's not a buffet but we really love Sarai. It's arabic, really beautiful interior and such pleasant staff. The food is just delicious and the price is right (have to admit, it's been 2 years since we've been so hopefully it's still as good). It's not licensed though. Also found this: http://www.dubaimoves.com/13190/jbr-the-walk-restaurants/ when I couldn't remember the name of Sarai and did a search. Good list, might help you! edited by andreasmullet on 30/01/2013 Sarai closed down a while ago, it's now an IHOP. it may have moved, but I don't know to where, sorry. As for Buffets on The Walk, I think aside from BBQ Delights, it will be only the Hotels (Ritz Carlton, Movenpick, Oasis Beach Tower, Hilton, Ramada, sofitel, Amwaj Rotana, JA Ocean View & Sheraton) that will serve buffet style, but as you can see, there are now quite a few hotels to choose from. Ah bummer :(

I completely agree with Molly Coddle people have been very unfair to OP and i think you are being pretty mean, its actually made me angry reading this post and some of your reply's ! You don't know what has lead her to re home her cat and its actually her decision! if she doesn't feel safe having the cat in the house with her child who are you to judge that ! She came on to EW to ask if anybody could give her cat a home and i'm sure she didn't expect the nastiness that has come out from some of you regarding her parenting skills and the decision to re home her cat, She also explained she had to move from a villa to a apartment and does not know if she can move back to a garden but she is looking, i wonder if the cat is happy being stuck in doors all day of if the cat would like to be back out side! She is however looking for a new home for her cat and will not be leaving it somewhere or kicking it out in the cold like some people do, so i think she is doing the most responsible thing for HER DECISION to re home the cat! i think if you haven't got anything nice to say of anything helpful you shouldn't say anything at all ! Like i say its her decisions if she wants to re home the cat and i'm sure she has her reasons ! Why doesn't the new EW have a LIKE button!!!??? I'd definitely give lou86 a big ol' *LIKE* for this post.

I thought this was a joke when i read the title. You take the baby in its car seat and put it at the end of the trolly. I didn't think it was a joke... my car seat doesn't fit at the end of the trolley so it doesn't work for everybody. Personally I like the sling. The baby is right with me and I can turn away from the cart without worry as babe is always right there with me :)

I love Handi in the Taj Palace (no alcohol though, but the food makes up for it). Masala in Bab al Shams is amzing too, might be a bit too far... And we enjoy Asha's in Mall of the Emirates a lot, might be a bit too casual, I'm sure Asha's in Wafi is as good and they serve alcohol too. We love Asha's at Wafi. It's kinda casual/fancy... we always dress up, yet some people don't but we find the interior decor quite beautiful. We've never had a bad experience there and always take our guests there for their last evening in Dubai. We've noticed many Indians eating there, so we figure that must be a good sign!

This happened once to us. Once we gathered the money and then requested pretty much the same items that SueB suggested below before handing over the donation, suddenly the "sick sister" in the hospital was miraculously cured and all bills paid up. Not saying this is always the case, but best to be cautious on this one.

The Osborene phonics collection is great; Hen's Pen, Fox on a box, Ted in a red bed ; there are many! You can order them from Book Depository.co.uk (don't forget, you must give a PO box). The Lady Bird series is also good, I bought from Magrudy's. you can get titles such as Cinderella Level One. All traditional stories, but with easier readability. The Oxford reading collection is also good, and level appropriate. Many schools use them so you'll benefit at school. Have a look in the book stores, sometimes you'll happen to find the perfect series, but no brand, and the books are great to read, ie I found ones my LOs loved about a monkey called Bubbles. Have a look at momzworld.com, they sell the Oxford readers. Dr Seuss is great. Thanks a lot for this detailed reply Amy. Does it mean the Usborne phonics series is not available in Dubai? I dont have a S&S account. :( I ! I know i've seen them at borders. Maybe not the whole collection but most of them.
