7 days sounds about right. The bank on the other side has a fee that they take also that the bank here does not determine. Why did you use a bank and not a money exchange place to wire money to the USA?

What is the point of having a maid if she can't be with you in your time of need? You are having a baby! It is almost audacious of her to think that she should leave at that time! She will not have even worked for you for a year! And be careful believing what her previous employer did or said. There are two sides to every story...

DI, do you have an Arabic speaker who can go with you to the police station? FYI: I have had something of little value stolen from my home by someone who I let into my home. I sent an Arabic speaker to the Rashidiya police station to file a case and the police would not entertain it. If you feel it is important, then go to the police...

So how do you know they weren't scouting out the place to come back at a later date and break in? I'd rather waste police time and know that I tried to do something, than regret it later. I understand your point. She could try, but she most likely won't get far and she will need an Arabic speaker...

I just don't know what the police will care to do. They didn't steal anything of value and I know from experience that the police don't really care about petty theft by people that you have allowed into your home. The police will view it as just some people who came over and took a few inconsequential things. They can't act on anything because they didn't do anything illegal to you (besides the petty theft which the police don't care about)...

Yes, I would be so suspicious if two men showed up at my door with one woman. Why two? This is why I don't sell anything to people I don't know. I was once thinking of selling an expensive scarf and a man asked me if he could come to my house and look at it. I told him no. I'd rather not have the money...

I don't think that I would do anything unless these ornaments were worth a lot of money. I would not want to be in any further contact with these people. This was probably their plan all along and they may do this a lot to a lot of people. The baby in arms is meant to make you feel more trusting. Let this be a lesson to you. Be very careful who you let into your home. They were probably scoping out your belongings to see if you are worth burglarizing at a later time...

I just checked out airbnb in Dubai and it looks like some people are renting out their maid's rooms to people! I also noticed that people are allowing paid guests access to compound communal areas like swimming pools....

But I got the impression people were renting out rooms in their house like a bed-and-breakfast so the residents were present. How can anyone just let anyone into their home?

sorry to go completely OT but i'm curious as to why women who have lived in the UAE all their lives join a forum for expats ? because we are still expats and not locals Yes, even some of us (but not all) who are married to locals are still considered expats. We need a sponsor just like all the other expats... i think even if i was a local i would still join this forum.. there is a lot of information here for everyone :) And over the years, there have been some locals on this forum...

If it's just a minor illness like a cold, then she should be prepared to work her normal schedule... She should also continue to work her normal schedule with minor aches and pains. If she is in extreme pain, obviously she needs to go see a doctor. If she has chronic health conditions, sorry but she should not be working as a maid. Fortunately, I have never had to deal with any major health issues with any of my maids. The only situation that I have had in the past few years is that there have been dental emergencies where the maids were up all night in pain. In those cases, I let them sleep during the day...

I just spent 85 dirhams today on a horribly cheap white T-shirt with the Frozen movie picture on it. I balked at the price but I bought it anyway because I knew that it would make my daughter happy. Is that an essential purchase? Making your baby happy? Yes, totally essential:) I think. Or turning her into a spoiled brat?

I agree with Daza. Nap time is finished! My eldest daughter stopped napping at 23 months and I have to say that I actually preferred that. A daytime nap was keeping her up until very late at night and I did not like that. So look at the positive side of it! She will probably be ready to sleep at 7 pm now! My son is just about two and he does not seem ready to give up his nap. I have to say that I wish he would. It makes life so much easier not having to plan around nap times plus I truly hate having a one year-old who stays up later than me!

I get the feeling that this is a wind-up. She is trying to get us all into a debate about how certain people treat their maids. If it is not a wind-up, Marykar, then I want to say to you that you have come to the wrong place for maid advice. You will get so many differing opinions on this board.... Why don't you just follow what the contract says?

I don't think there is any magic recipe for success, Umm Muhammed. It really depends on your maid. A few pieces of advice: Don't give her too many privileges right away. Let her work for them so that she feels that she has something to work for. Don't worry about her social life. In due time, she will meet people. She will probably be lonely because there aren't that many Zanzibari maids here. However, this is a good time for her to have English immersion. Don't eat your meals with her, no matter how tempting it is. Don't share toiletries. Tell her right away when she does something incorrectly. But as I said before, there is no way of guaranteeing that things will go well, but I hope for you that they will...

Excuse my ignorance but why can't the consulate give out new passports? For security reasons, too many blank passports were going missing in transit worldwide and ending up in the wrong hands. How many times has there been cases (including here) where attacks/murders have been committed and it's been proved they people involved were using fake passports? edited by dally on 25/05/2014 Well my consulate provides passport renewals (must be a less desirable passport then). Do you think this system is going to make that (faking passports) impossible? Don't think so. edited by Marroosh on 25/05/2014 My consulate (USA) also provides passport renewals...

I am also very saddened by this. As the father said: "You never think that it will happen to one of your children until it does." The politicians will not put strict gun laws in place ever. They didn't after the school schooling in Connecticut, so why would they now? I have not been to the USA recently but when I have been there and I go to public places, I always look around for suspicious lone men and feel ready to duck... What I also hate is that they try to pin liberals against conservatives in the gun debate. I am not a liberal at all but I don't think that all these guns should be allowed. I have heard that these types of shootings could never happen down South because everyone is carrying a gun down there. Maybe that is true since these shootings tend to happen in the less conservative states...
