I am happy that this made it to the papers. My children go to a GEMS school and they said this last year too but never implemented it. This year when I received the email, I was a bit taken aback...

You can get mangoes at pretty much any supermarket. The Alphonsos are absolutely delicious. We are fighting over them in my house! I got them at Aswaaq...

i was set to leave in about two months - to move home and be unemployed until something came along. I was so excited and had so much hope. I know it'd be easy to get a job as the market is great there right now. But alas, I got a call yesterday from a company I interviewed with extensively in October 2013. They have re-opened the position and asked if I could meet with them tomorrow. How ironic?! I'm so stuck. They haven't made an offer, but they have discussed the salary and benefits. It's dreamy and the company has a great reputation/would look great on my resume. But at the same time, I am so ready to be home. But home won't provide the type of salary this company will offer. So, fingers crossed here. I don't know which way it'll go. Why don't you go home? The salary might be more here but the cost of living is also so much here...

Sorry Ladies. I omitted one important detail. I need eyeliner with a triangular applicator. I don't know what the correct word for that is but the applicator must not be flimsy. I don't know how to apply it with the flimsy applicator. Am I making sense?

I am actually looking for one that I can get at the Mirdif City Center. centerpoint will have loads of drug store makeup... gel liner usually comes in a pot with a brush.. it has a smokey effect rather than a sharp bold effect.. hth I don't have a lot of time so I need to know what I want before entering Centerpoint. I would have no idea how to put on gel liner so I can't buy that.

I love living here and am not interested in going back to my home country. However, what I do miss are the seasons. I really hate the summer heat.

Definitely don't miss the rain one little bit, especially where we live. What I just thought about last night though was the lovely evening times as the sun sets in summer. I really do miss that time of day. It was really nice here yesterday at sunset. I was outside wishing that I didn't have to call the kids in for bath time because it was so nice...

Pharmacy. Ask for the really good migraine stuff. Can't remember what it's called but comes in a pack of two pills only along with advice not to abuse it :) But you are not supposed to drive on that medication, are you? edited by AnonDubai on 06/05/2014

I don't think that you need to panic at all. It is horrible, though, that polio is on the rise again and definitely totally unnecessary. The anti-vaccine mothers might want to read this article!

I don't think that there is anything that you can do as long as your son has been vaccinated on schedule. He will have a top up at 5 years. That is the best we can do...

Well Ruth, your husband should also be thinking about what you want. It's not fair for you to be so unhappy just because he wants to pursue his career. Dubai is not known to be the best place for careers anyway. Can't he have a good career elsewhere? You are just about to have a baby. If you are already so unhappy, you may fall into a depression after the birth. Does your husband know how unhappy you are here?

Is more emphasis during inspections put on Arabic studies or is that just a rumor?

I guess it depends on how well you prepare for inspections... Or rather; how much time and emphasis a school is willing to give to Islamic studies - some schools, no matter high up the academic placement they should be, will not receive an outstanding rating because they are not willing to sacrifice other educational priorities in favour of Islamic studies. But how can that be? I think that I am correct when saying that there are very few Muslim students in the outstanding schools when compared with the non-outstanding schools. Do the schools with very few Muslims have the best Islamic studies? If so, that is too bad...

I have to say that I have never bothered educating my very young children about germs. I also don't understand why you would consider a comb dirty. If there is any hair in it that would get into your child's mouth, he will most likely pull the hair out of his mouth and make a scowling face and never do it again. I also don't believe that dirt will give you an "ouchie" so I would not teach my children that... edited by AnonDubai on 30/04/2014

Hi ladies I wanted to say a big thank you for your input and advice, it's been a very trying time. The reality is I have spoken to her and have confirmed that I will not be banning her or reporting her for the illegal work. I only found out about the latter because she ended up doing some work for a friend of a friend and it came to light by chance. Anyway - she did a great job and was a great nanny for the seven months she was with us. I believe she made a mistake and she feels bad about it, but she would still like to go home and see her family bc of the issue with her daughter. I have agreed to let her go, but I have retained her last salary's pay cheque to contribute towards the 5K that remained of the cost of her visa which will help towards the cost of her flight home and the new nanny's visa. I am just disappointed at how it has turned out bc to be honest I don't even have it in my heart to do this, but I've had my arm twisted as we can't really afford to waive the financial implications of her decision completely. Nevertheless, thank you for the input ladies, and I hope next time will be better! The only downside for me is this: I treated her as family, we paid well and we gave extras, plus presents for birthdays, Xmas, Easter, etc. I always let her go home even if there was stuff still to do when I came home from work bc I got that she had already put in a full day's work and had to travel to get home. I feel very naive now but more disappointed than anything bc I want to treat people well but feel v used and that makes me unsure of how to handle the situation next time. Do you recommend a change of approach? I just hope that you are honest if she asks you for references. Your maid could have completed her contract. It was only a few more months...

I did go to M&S but did not see what I was looking for. Maybe that's because I went to the one in the Mirdif City Center which is relatively small. Unfortunately, I cannot order from the USA so Lands End is not an option.
