The reason I asked if you are Swedish is because if you have a UK driving license but not a UK passport, they will not agree to give you a UAE driver's license. You have to have the passport of the country of your driving license so it may be better for you to learn here... edited by AnonDubai on 30/01/2015

Yes, he should start in September 2018 in FS 1. FS1 actually comes under the realm of nursery, even if it is taught in a school....

It might be easier just to find a new family for her and do a visa transfer. Is there a reason why you are not doing that?

Quality aside.. Who are the people who can afford a schooling fee of AED 60K for KG1? I believe that's Nord Anglia's fee. It seems like a lot of people can. Those are average fees for most of the new schools...

I have a 2012 Mercedes GL 500. We purchased it brand new. I don't know much about cars but I have been happy with it. The only downside, and this is specifically for me because I have a big family, is that we have very little trunk space. I feel good driving it because I know that Mercedes is one of the safest cars on the road. We have five years or 100,000 kilometers free service so that has been good. However, the tires are expensive and not easy to find. My DH had to bring one from Abu Dhabi once because none were available in Dubai...

I have not read anywhere except on this thread that government offices will be closed. That is why I said that schools will not close. Perhaps the OP should edit her initial post or provide a source saying that government offices will be closed... edited by AnonDubai on 23/01/2015

Thank you, Marsbar. It is because of your advice that we have decided to book our plane tickets to Boston instead of Montreal. We will just rent a car in the USA and drive up to Quebec then return it at the same location to avoid complications. Who would have thought that it would be so difficult and expensive to get between the two countries? Now onto my next question: what are the must-see tourist things in Quebec? I will stay 3 nights in Montreal and 3 nights in Quebec City.

I am heading from Quebec City to the White Mountain region in New Hampshire. The rental car company will not let me take the car to the USA so I am only looking for a way to get across the border and to the nearest Hertz. That is why I am wondering if there are any buses from Quebec City to cities in Maine or NH.

As saralou said, wet wipes do cause blockages, even the ones that claim to be flushable are just as bad. They do not dissolve as they are fabric and its misleading of manufacturers to call them flushable because although you can certainly can flush them away they don't dissolve like paper and will certainly cause a major blockage quite quickly because they adhere to the pipes until they completely close the flow off. My plumber told me those wet wipes are the best thing that ever happened for the plumbing industry, especially for companies like Dyno Rod! Oh really? I have been using flushable wipes for years in my toilets and I have never had a blockage. I am concerned about what you mention, though. How quick is quickly?

I am having a similar issue. I bought a Whirlpool washing machine about two weeks ago from Carrefour. It has already broken down on me so I called them up and they came two days later to pick it up and told me that they'll bring it back in two days from now. That means 4 days without a washing machine. When I called Whirlpool to complain, they told me that it is my fault because I have a big family and I overload my machine (How can they know that?)! I have since called Carrefour asking for my money back since the washing machine is back with Whirlpool and they told me that I have no right to a refund! Is this really how things operate here?

I had my fourth at the age of 34. We can't tell you whether you are too old to have a baby at 39. That is for you to judge. Personally, I think that as long as your body can do it naturally, you are not too old. However, I find that taking care of a baby is exhausting so I think the younger the better. I am 34 but feel so old because I am constantly tired!

Thank you for actually taking your time to respond. I would love to meet other western/European people who lives the life that i will enter in the future. I am trying to prepare myself day by day and I do understand that it will be a big change for BOTH of us since we come from very different backgrounds (I'm Swedish). I know most of the locals who says they are open minded are really not, luckily my future husband is. Anyway I know there will be a lot disagreements but that's just life. There is for sure money enough for villas and education so that will not be a problem at all. And as we already decided to stay even close to his family is not an option. May I ask what's your nationality and at what age did you get married. In which emirate are you staying as well? Happy new year to you all :) American, 25, Dubai

Yes, definitely correct... I am only talking about the emirate of Dubai. The villas in the SMBR Youth Program are for lower-income Emiratis, but they still have to pay for them...

There is an option though. Nationals get land, but they can opt for a villa in a (local) community rather than their own land and building themselves. They won't pay anything for this villa but they do not get the design freedom you get when building your own villa and the plots of land are smaller than the plot-to-build option. Good point about making sure he has the book! School is the next one you want to make sure he has budgeted for. You are an English speaker, probably won't be interested in local schools. Look from now at the school prices as they keep increasing. Your children will need to know Arabic at a higher level than an expat child. Determine how many kids he thinks is normal, you may think 2 but average is 4. So 4 will need to be budged for in school. There is a lot more that I would tell someone who personally asked but I would not put that on a public forum. Sorry ER, with all due respect, you are absolutely wrong in saying that locals don't have to pay for the villa in a local community. It is much cheaper and much more convenient than building your own house, but it is in no way free and a lot of locals can't even afford those "cheaper" houses... edited by AnonDubai on 31/12/2014
