[ Hi ER! I am very out of touch with expat life but I still post on here. I am ok with getting thumbed down. We can't all have the same opinions... AnonDubai, you're not out of touch at all! I'd say you're more up to speed than I am. Plus, as you say, you're an 'agreeable' poster and you don't get worked up about other people's posts. Unlike me - posting when I was in a bad mood yesterday - I have since deleted what I wrote. Lol. Thank you, WO. It is good to have a broad range of opinions on here. There is no certain way of defining an expat so maybe you are right that I am not out of touch....

Nice to get an update from you! Why did you stop posting? edited by AnonDubai on 26/12/2014 I was spending too much time on :) That and I feel a bit out of touch with expat life. I don't do the same things anymore, have different issues, lead a life different to what I did before, so I don't have as much to share these days. Two different worlds in one place. Then I decided to step back and let all of people who can really help, help. I cannot help re schools, housing, DEWA, brunches etc. but lots of people can help so I let AA go :) Although, I can still help on any PAF related enquiries. :) That should be my avatar. Hi ER! There are no threads as far as I can see about getting married to an Emirati. And I am guessing the 2 of you are not from the UAE originally. Would you mind telling me a bit about how it was and how your life changed since you got married. Me myself as a european is curious since I might be emirati wife next year. Actually, my advice to you is to make sure he has the book before agreeing to marry him. My second piece of advice is to make sure he has enough money saved up to own his own home. Living your whole life as a renter here is not easy and when he cannot afford the rent anymore, you'd probably have to move in with your in-laws. Research carefully...

Yes, I agree with you, ER. My school commute is relatively quick (-15 minutes). I could apply for my children at a better school academically but we'd have a much longer commute and I think that not spending so much time in the car plus having their friends nearby aids the overall academic experience...

I don't know about vaccinations given in the UK but I can answer your first question. Yes, vaccinations are free at DHA clinics. If you would like me to tell you what they vaccinate against here, let me know and I will go get one of my children's vaccination books.

I don't mean to sound rude but why didn't your husband ask the new sponsor for the 3000 as a condition of release? I think the Sri Lankan Embassy assumes that the old sponsor would get the money from the new sponsor...

Ethiopia won't allow their women to work as maids anywhere anymore. It's not just the UAE. I have not heard anything about Eritrean maids. The African CVs I saw recently were of women from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria. I have an Ethiopian maid and we would have wished to hire another one but it is not allowed, unfortunately. We hired a Sri Lankan instead but it would have been easier to have two of the same nationality. Ethiopians don't need visas to go to Sudan or Kenya so if you know of someone in Ethiopia who wants to come here, they might be able to leave from either of those countries... AnonDubai, Can you give me the name of the agency from where you got your Srilankan maid? Al Sharq Services - 06-745-6381, 06-742-5959 FYI: They are used to dealing with Arab customers...

Hi! Don't stress about it. You had what's called a "fender bender", not an accident and these things happen everyday all over the world. I understand that you see it as a big deal but the police see this all the time so they really don't care. As long as no one got hurt, there is no need to be upset! Don't be offended by the fact that you were asked to sit in your car. Policemen here are very conservative types and they would consider it insulting to a woman to make her stand out on the road talking to strange men...

Thank God I have a life! They should try getting one too :) We are getting thumbed down because we are talking about Islamic schools. Many people reading do not like the idea.

It's unprecedented the amount of information and video footage being released by the authorities about this. I knew it would only be a matter of a few days before they caught the perpetrator, thankfully the authorities will do everything to ensure the safety of it's residents. What is worrying is the image of the walkie talkies at the end of the footage, someone else must have been involved, she wasn't a lone wolf after all. edited by mum2girls on 05/12/2014 Walkie talkies? Which video are you referring to? She went to the trouble of hiding her plate number yet she didn't bother cleaning her steering wheel...

Besides the financial aspect of it all, who would want some unknown man living in their house, especially considering that the arrangement is not legal?

Hi! Yes, if she is sponsored by her husband, then she should have a visa saying "housewife not allowed to work", which wouldn't allow her to work without a labor card and not as a domestic worker. The next point about her husband is that, as per the law, no one should be living with you unless they are sponsored by you. I know several people who take part in hiring maids in irregular situations so I know for a fact that people do do it. They take the risk because most likely, nothing will ever happen. If they do get fined, I believe the fine is 50,000 dirhams, which seems like a lot. However, if you have been able to hire maids for five years, for example, without ever having to pay any fees that go along with sponsorship, then 50,000 doesn't seem like a lot. IMO, you should look into hiring someone in a regular situation (i.e. no man living in your house and maid being sponsored by you), but that is only my opinion. Sponsoring a maid is very expensive so I can understand why people take the risk....

I don't know exactly the monetary amount that we are saving but I know that we are paying two mortgages. We should have two houses paid off in 10 years so that should be some kind of security for our retirement. My DH's company pays/will pay the majority of the school fees for our 4 children so that helps to put money aside... edited by AnonDubai on 01/12/2014

Yes. And I'm American. I have been to Toronto in February! I know the pain! I was joking a bit. People often have weather as one of the factors in deciding where to live, and I noticed that most of the countries on the list are generally known for long, cold winters. After living in Dubai for so long I'm not sure if I could face a Canadian or northeastern USA winter again! Tallybalt Have you ever been to Canada? True! I am from the Northeastern region of the USA and I have no interest in ever visiting there in the wintertime. The temperatures are so cold there that no one here could even fathom them and I can't convert them into Celsius to make people understand. My children say it is cold here nowadays. I just tell them that they don't know what cold is...

Although I do agree that the thread title is a bit hysterical, if I had to choose between leaving my baby in a nursery or with a "domestic servant" at home, I would choose the former. The reason is not because I would necessarily be afraid of her abusing my child but because of how she would react in an emergency. I knew of a case a few years ago where a very good nanny made a terrible mistake and rather than admitting to it, she lied to cover it up and ended up in jail. Many mothers say that an infant is too young to be in a nursery but at least nurseries have a certain protocol to follow in case of an emergency.

Hi Saggi! I wouldn't get into the habit of paying your maid by the hour for extra work. Her salary should be all-inclusive and a good maid should be devoted to the family. You can reward her devotion by giving her generous bonuses and gifts at various points of her contract. If you start giving her hourly pay for extra hours worked, she will start expecting that all the time. Imagine if you or your husband or another child had a medical emergency after hours and she expected babysitting money! It should be easy enough for her to babysit anyway since you live in the same house or apartment. She could just sit in the living room if it's not very late. If it gets too late and her room is far from the baby's room, then you could just have her put down a mattress outside the baby's room and sleep there until you get home.

Hi, I also feel like my July born DD is too young to start FS1 at school next year, so we are keeping her in nursery for FS1 and will place her in school for FS2 (inshaAllah!) The age for starting FS1 at exactly 3 years is ridiculous, I think children are too young to start then, should be at least 3.5 years old Hi! I have a question for you. Why do you think it is better to have your child do FS 1 at nursery then do FS 2 in a school?
