That really depends on what your tastes are. I just ordered some pacifiers and a car seat accessory off of amazon.com for my future visitor to bring over for me. As an adult, I don't need anything from the USA except some Burt's Bees lip gloss. Pretty much everything is available here. I don't need more processed foods and cheap plastic toys...

The government hospital would be your best bet. They are the only non-profit hospital here. However, you would have to see how that works with your insurance. They don't do direct-billing...

IMO, your child is way too young for some nursery teacher to be saying that he/she has speech and socialization issues... I know that you didn't ask for this opinion but I cannot hold myself back...

The breast cancer ad a few months ago was pretty bad too. I think someone posted about it on here. It was implying that Mommy's not coming home because she died of breast cancer. I had to turn it off when my kids were in the car. It is so scary for them!! I found the thread and bumped it up... edited by AnonDubai on 14/11/2014

Hi Where exactly are you going to be based? As far as I know there are no western schools west of Abu Dhabi. Expats are not allowed to attend Arabic Government Schools. Is your employer not providing you with accommodation? There are international schools in Ruwais. http://www.expatwoman.com/abudhabi/monthly_abudhabi_guide_Living_In_Ruwais_10567.aspx edited by AnonDubai on 14/11/2014

This is the 2nd time we've had him - the first time was a disaster as we left him in behind at Mina Al Salam and only realised he was missing the following day. Fortunately we got him back but his his cardigan and hat were stolen. Just checked his diary and the last two places were ski Dubai and The Chedi in Muscat - what in earth???? lol And yes, I believe it!!

The woman's visa title is "Domestic Servant", which encompasses all aspects of the home, including childcare. Therefore, the OP has the right to call her a nanny. Domestic servants are the government's answer to childcare for working mothers here. NO - a nanny is a specefic job. Obviously you could call a nanny a doemstic servant but it doesn't necessarily work both ways... Is there a visa category here for "Nanny"? A nursemaid's visa would be something different because they are trained to take care of newborns and are not necessarily nannies either...

Hi! You need her to email you a passport-size picture and her passport page. With that, you can go to immigration and apply for an employment visa for her. They will give you a light red paper. You must send her the original and she can leave Cyprus and enter the UAE with that paper. The other formalities can be completed later on...

Thankyou Daza - my colleague called Noortakaful but they no longer provide medical cover for maids. So how do those of you with live-in maids deal with any maid-related medical issues? Government hospitals? Any insight into local experience on this topic will be much appreciated. Thanks again. I go to private clinics when my maid needs to see a doctor. They are more convenient and cheaper than the government system...

If I didn't have non-school age young children, I don't think I'd have a maid. Most things can be outsourced these days and you don't need to hire a full-time live-in to get things done! For me, childcare is the most important and that is why I have a maid...

This always happens. They use their phone credit very quickly and then have nothing left. I give my maids credit at the beginning of each month for their personal use. I don't expect them to use it for work purposes. When they need to call me, they use my landline. You can get a block put on so your maid cannot call internationally. However, you cannot get an itemized bill for calls made to local cell phones so you would just need to be aware of that.

yes sounds right, i just don't understand why would anyone do that, i mean if you have a problem with a user isn't the adult civilized way of doing this is speaking to the person in private. Yes, and that person should also fear the privacy laws in the UAE. IP addresses are easily figured out.

Fake in the new real world over as after the recession people had to act in a bid to fake it till they make it. However, and more importantly, does anyone think it should be George Clooney being told he is the fortunate one, that Amal kindly married him? Yes, I have to agree with you. I am sick of reading the stories about how lucky she was to nab him. It really is the other way around. However, I think that she is also happy to be getting something from him...

Mrs B that is awful - what a cheek helping themselves to everything in your kitchen! My worst experience was my own (well my daughters b'day party). 30 kids came and it was like monkey world. Chocolate cake stuffed down my sofa, cheese puff finger prints all over my walls, a kilo of popcorn in the pool. I even found my dog dressed as Elsa. I was so traumatised that I refuse to ever have one at home again. Also I wish someone had told me about the PC version of pass-the-parcel - in my day whoever unwrapped the last paper got the present inside. Today you have to make sure there is a sweet/small present in between every wrapping layer. I had lots of tears during that game. This is why I'd never host a party at my house. I really don't want my home to be used as a stomping ground. But one thing that I have noticed when I have gone to home parties is that there is usually never a trash bin in sight. It then becomes really hard to throw things away. If I ever had a party in my home, I would put a huge trash bin in each corner....

You asked for some opinions, so here goes. I hope that it collapses. It was never a good idea... Why do you say that? In very simple terms, because I know nothing about economics, Europe was much better for me when each country had their own currency. I used to live in France and my money went a long way when changing from dollar to franc. I also know many Germans who were much happier spending marks. They felt that things were cheaper in mark.

I have been to a party where no food at all was served to the adults and no food except cake at the end was served to the children. It was really hot outside, too. I was pretty surprised. The entertainment for the children was good, however. I asked a good friend for input on why a hostess would do that and this person's opinion was that maybe they only had enough money for the entertainment and could not afford anything else. Feeding 20 children and all their parents could have added 500 to 1000 dirhams extra to the party... Why give a party if you can't afford it? A party is a luxury not a necessity. Too many people give parties to keep up with the Jones' s and to receive gifts for their kids. I'm sorry but that's not right. If I can't give a proper one then I don't give it at all. That's just me. You are right. Some cheap snacks and water could have been put out for the kids and adults. I know for a fact that the entertainment at this party was expensive (2000+) and I don't think it was a question of what they could afford. Maybe they had just set a budget and didn't feel like going over it in protest of the high birthday party prices in this country... Or maybe they believe that kids eat too much these days. I go to parties all the time where they have pizza and chips and marshmallows all before a big chunk of cake ... it's frankly gross. Yes, I agree with you but all the children were really hungry. Not even water was provided...

Daza, this is what I thought but my maids friend was brought recently from Filipines through an agency. Dont know how they do it but i know its expensive and all legal. After she came to dubai her visa was and sponsorship was done without any problems. It was still allowed through June. Wouldn't it be easy if you could just hire a Philippino maid for 10,000 dirhams? That was the price 5 years ago! edited by AnonDubai on 26/10/2014
