I apply this standard to maids only and no to your second question. The way I see it is that the women who apply to work as maids in the GCC know that they are most likely going to work for a Muslim family where many of the women wear niqabs and/or headscarves. If a Muslim woman is showing herself to refuse the cultural norm from the beginning, that could spell trouble for the future... As for mocking a woman who doesn't wear hijab, it goes both ways... edited by AnonDubai on 23/10/2014

The following is only my opinion. When I am looking to hire a maid from an agency, these are the characteristics I look for: 30s with Gulf experience but not UAE (2 years or more). I don't care about religion or nationality because you can get good and bad in all of that. I just find that someone who is a bit more mature and who has worked before in the GCC will be a better fit in my household. Some of the maid CVs that I have seen recently are quite surprising. Some of them are dressed very unmaidlike and that turns me off. I also would not hire a Muslim who is not wearing hijab. What agency are you using? Also, why wouldn't you hire a muslim who is not wearing hijab? I have been looking at CVs from the agency that Umm Muhammed has been recommending...

To answer the question regarding hijab: I think that a Muslim maid who does not wear hijab in her CV picture is showing a lack of desire to conform and I am not interested in a non-conformist maid in my household....

If this were my daughter, no way would I let her go to this party. You can bet that the people responsible for this party are adults who like to hang out with teenagers and they will surely be very generous in supplying their younger "friends" with alcohol...

that's the thing AnonDubai, she's single and on the school's sponsorship. wasnt there something about KHDA implementing a rule that all schools have 3 ( or whatever?) years to ensure that all teachers are properly qualified? or am i dreaming? In theory, yes, but in practice, no... Did she tell you this herself?

At least that person claimed to have false qualifications. I think most of the unqualified people working here would not even try to hide it. I think this is exceptionally prevalent in situations whereby the woman is working on a housewife's visa. You need to show proper qualifications to get a visa to work in a school here, but if the school doesn't need to give you a visa, then any requirement for qualifications goes out the window... edited by AnonDubai on 20/10/2014

Yes, it is. The pay is too low and the hours are too long for many qualified staff to want to work here. I think most schools here are teeming with people who are not qualified for their jobs...

Talking of people barging their way into lifts and metros before you've had a chance to get out the door, I had a new experience the other day.... Coming out of the toilet in one of the malls and a local lady tried to get in to my cubicle as soon as id opened the door and before I'd even got out! I had to really fight to get through the door! Unbelievable! lol, but how do you know she was local?

Personally, I hate it but my children's school has asked that each child has an Ipad. I resisted at the beginning of the school year and did not buy them each an Ipad until I realized that my children became "the ones without an Ipad"...

I bought some of those touristy things in Karama and they are really poor quality. The pens fall apart quickly and the mouse pad is so bad that a piece of paper would be a better mouse pad. I wouldn't buy this for anyone. A better gift would be a bar of camel milk chocolate. That is unique and you can give each person a bar so as not to make it too expensive...

I don't contribute to class gifts anymore. I give my own gifts to the teachers. I stopped doing that after I gave a generous amount of money to the class mum to buy gifts for the teacher, assistant, and nanny and she never gave me a card to sign. I got angry because I thought that the people receiving the gifts would not know if I contributed or not....

It's like traffic fines; we rant and rave but ultimately we have to pay up because they say so. Here, we've ranted and raved and been deleted and banned and now it's all knitting needles and kittens. Facebook did the same thing at first - ignored what their users wanted and then ultimately they were forced to implement better privacy etc. They'd already lost people by then. EW is at risk from someone who comes along with a better way of connecting expat women. We want to be able to chat about stuff that matters and be able to exchange details via PM. I certainly don't want to go to a coffee morning just to meet a woman who has plants she wants to give away. Far easier to arrange and co-ordinate by PM. So there. The feather light trigger on banning for every small infraction is what really turned the masses away. Cannot imagine this is the same EW that has a four or five day old thread still up on the first page. FYI, the main page has many more threads than it used to so that is why older threads are appearing for longer.

Thanks for all the responses. As an American, the first thought that went through my mind being invited to these events was: "They want me to send a check." I feel better knowing that that is not the case. They are very kind people so I just wanted to clarify why I was being invited.... Are you suggesting Americans are only invited to peoples functions for monetary gain? edited by Lolacat on 15/10/2014 No.

They didn't say that, exactly, they said it would be harder if I were Muslim do maybe I misunderstood. The kids do have passports same as me, where they were born. I never said they don't have passports so what you buy or don't buy isn't really my fault. Their fathers nationality at the time of their birth was not the same that it is now. I was told that his fathers country of birth does not recognize dual citizenship so I'm still not sure what he's doing on that end. edited by Cherpie on 15/10/2014 How did he get them the GCC passports? He is canadian & was born in Canada so no dual citizenship for him. Did he give his canadian passport to get his GCC passport back? How did he get them the GCC passports when they are born with different nationalith, their dad wasnt from GCC when they were born. Seriously?? You raise valid points. Cherpie has always been a bit cryptic....

I think Cherpie's situation is different though because she is not Muslim. I don't think a non-Muslim mother can retain custody of her children. Also, from what I understood, Cherpie, your DH is not local but from another GCC country. Didn't you say that he got a Canadian passport for himself and your children? What was the purpose of that?

This isn't exactly new... And I believe many people don't even use tissue. When in Rome however, one shouldn't clog the pipes! I know for a fact that many people from this part of the world don't even use/buy/have toilet paper. Don't ask me why or how. I don't understand it myself... How: The little hoses beside the toilet and your left hand. Why: This is the Islamic way. You wash yourself thoroughly after using the toilet. If you wipe, you are only drying yourself - not cleaning. Cleaning is already finished. I get that part, Mrsb. I have never been able to ask this question of an Arab woman because I am too embarrassed. I understand that they clean themselves with water, but how do they dry themselves?

Anon they can be seen blowing up their bike tyres and mopping their floors, the Beeb has documentaries on them., fascinating stuff. Then all of the UK must be upper-class then! Where I come from (the USA), we always viewed British people as sounding upper class because of their accents. After moving here and actually meeting real British people, I learned that that was not the case! The upper class of the UK are usually titled and own vast inherited estates and or lots of land. So would Sir Elton John be considered upper class?

The family lives here but they go back to Goa for important milestones. I am just wondering why I was invited. In my culture, it would be customary to give a monetary gift even though I can't attend the event. Is it like that in Goan culture? I am not trying to imply that they want money from me. I am just wondering if I am expected to give them money because I can't attend the wedding. edited by AnonDubai on 14/10/2014

For me, it's actually a class issue. Upper class people treat everyone that works for them with respect and lower class people don't. I doubt very much that there are any upper class expats in the UAE. I don't agree with that - I've met many people I would consider upper class. What make you think they are upper class ? Usually the way they behave. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said what you would consider "upper class" Real upper class are a strange breed not normally seen around these parts.[/quote Where are they normally seen? In the UK?

Of course goggle and you tube no doubt would have an idiot proof guide. Do make sure you buy the right sort of handed pump though Anon, you can sometimes struggle to find left handed or right handed pumps here! lol I like asking on EW because I trust the responses more... I just got home from Carrefour with a pump. Let's hope it's the right size and style! Oh yes I could see that googling “how to put air in a bicycle tyre” could indeed produce untrusted responses. Lol Just ask your gardener or maid to do it for you. Well, no one on Google or YouTube would have told me that I could get a pump at Carrefour for 10 dirhams! I will change the word to "relevant" so as not to annoy you... Yes, I will ask the maid to do it. She is better at these things than I am. She put the bike together in no time. I could not have done that!

"Please do not flush paper down the toilet, put it in the bin provided"? I think its disgusting and seriously wonder why in other parts of the world people are able to flush paper down the toilet and not have problems? Not referring to sanitary towels obviously. Yay or nay? I'm a flusher, sorry. This is also a cultural thing because here, it would be assumed that you have done 98% of your washing with water so there shouldn't be anything on the toilet paper that goes in the trash...
