And people say Dubai is a 'friendly " city. If women are friendly to strangers, they are misunderstood and are seen as "easy" , which is why so many women (and men) have a poker face 24/7 here :) It has something to do with men who come from backwards places where women are supposed to be at home all covered up and anyone showing their face has no "honor" and if she goes out by herself, she is just asking to be hit on. I am 90% sure the gardener is from that region .....

I start off though with proper English. Using English like "you no work", "me go", only propagates the idea that incorrect English is correct, and gramatically correct English is too difficult, which it is not. And if you think truncated English is bad, then in Arabic the situation is even worse. When i use gramatically correct Arabic, they wont understand, but when i use a horrible bastardized version with incorrect words, they will wobble their heads happily.

Where is she punished for her entire life ? They don't ban lightly..,a maid running away is normally because they have stolen, been working illegally etc not because they have been grt at there work and worked hard :@ I thought a maid stealing would be banned for life. Some maids do run away because of bad conditions like being forced to work 16-17 hours every day. Others are virtually imprisoned in a room and never allowed to go out. Those who work illegally or steal are a different matter and are often banned for life, arent they? And till recently a normal worker could be banned for 6 months for daring to resign from a job. The 6 month ban OTTTH is applicable to many people, and for reasons which are hardly bad enough to have every subsequent employer informed. edited by Arch on 30/08/2011

Quick question if a maid gets a six month ban for absconding can she just come back after that time and carry on looking for employment? How would a future employee know if someone they were going to hire had been banned ect? They wouldn't right? Why should a maid be punished for her entire life for absconding once? Maids are not slaves ....a maid running away should be the same as an office worker absconding, i.e. wrong in that act, but not someone who should be branded for the rest of their lives Its not like she is commiting a murder...

here is a tip ! Flight on etihad are often cheaper to Dubai than ABu Dhabi. In other words if you book the bus to Dubai when making the ticket its often 5% cheaper than if you book to and from abu dhabi and then book the coach separately. E.g. i booked to KL at 2010 dhs, which would be 2190 if i booked from abu dhabi

Most people coming on EW are not aware that it is illegal for anyone to do any work except for 1 employer; in other words being a glorified slave to that employer. Similarly people dont understand that its illegal to sell cookies they bake at home, these are normal in most parts of the world as normal labor movement/trends. Maybe a disclaimer at the top of any classifieds page will make people aware of the rules.

there are buses to both Marina mall and Chelsea tower; the respective codes are XMB and XNB, you can use that for any agent who is stupid and doesnt understand On that nore, Etihad tel agents have become horrendous in quality. Emirates has maintained a standard of people who actually understand stuff. But Etihad is now staffed with some people (and they dont know arabic either) who speak in broken english and cant do anything apart from booking a flight using a step by step method

its among the better towers in JLT , security is friendly and building doesnt feel "busy". The lobby and lifts are among the best in JLT The pool was shut for almost a year but is open now, maintenance was ok when we moved in, but never needed them after that. Its cluster is very well located, right in the centre of JLT and 10 minutes walk from the metro

Many cars which were submerged in Katrina, ended up in Sharjah. Many Sharjah garages specialize in taking written off cars, painting them and making some small changes to fool gullible customers, and then selling them off. This is one reason why i too would never got o Aweer. As for specs being lower , i agree. Unfortunately the GCC Consumer in many areas is seen as gullible, unsophisticated but with cash. That is why many cars are sold here without options which are basic in other places. This is not the case for high end cars, think Masrati, Porsche etc. But definitely for Toyotas and Fords. Even in electronics, at any point in time, whats sold here is lesser than whats sold in the US at the same time.

As for rudeness, it depends on where people are used to. If they have been to Doha or Kuwait, Dubai people are very polite. However if they have been to other polite places then many people in Dubai may appear arrogant and rude. I have lost count how many times i hold the door open for someone who walks through without even saying thanks, thats considered a very impolite response to a polite act in some cities, but not in Dubai apparently. Similarly jumping queues is something very prevalent in Dubai, I find it impolite, the person doing it may not find it impolite.

1 - Its my home and I miss it like crazy (living in another place now :( and no i am not emarati) 2 - The shininess of everything - the malls, mall bathrooms, the cars, the roads when the lights are up 3 - Everything is so near, almost every residential area has a large mall, clinic etc 4 - Foods from all over the world 5 - Sales staff, etc are polite (pomegranate - come to doha if u think pp in xb are rude) 6 - Shk zayed road - without the traffic - every where is so easily accesible thanks to it 7 - Culture - When u go out, its harder to find emaratis these days! 8 - Even in the crazy heats of july/august u can find a place to go and cool down indoors 9 - Lots of places for kiddies entertainment - pretty much all ages from 2 and above - especially good if u have children 10 - Shk Mo - I love the man.. he has made dubai what it is and it rocks! Every country has its negatives and so does dubai, but having been there for 3 decades, no other country in the world has achieved what dxb has in that short a time! He is the only ruler who i know of who you can actually spot driving his own car, or maybe even at the mall! :) He rules! With all respect, Dubai is not a country, the United Arab Emirates is the country's name, Dubai is one of its Emirates, as is Abu Dhabi, which is the Capital of the UAE. The UAE as a whole has achieved a lot since independence Might seem pedantic, but i want to ensure people mention the country's name as it is, and that Dubai is 1 of 7 Emirates. edited by Arch on 19/08/2011 edited by Arch on 19/08/2011

-honesty of people. even the same people are more honest here than in their home country. -helpfulness of people. in general, everyone is so willing to help when one needs. I dont fine people that honest or helpful here but anyways... 1) Food, so many restaurants with food catering to all budgets and cuisine 2) Having mosques and prayer areas in malls 3) Weather from November to February 4) Wonderful, large malls that could be towns by themselves 5) Safer than most large cities 6) Good road infrastructure 7) Most things clean and new 8) The fact that most places stay open so late. Shops dont close at 8pm 9) How could i forget: Burj Khalifa! 10) The urban sprawl, I actually like the fact that Dubai is designed more like Dallas/Houston than Boston. Living in downtown Abu Dhabi was good, but turned suffocating due to the congested roads and lack of parking. edited by Arch on 19/08/2011

India Palace Garhoud does a very good iftar buffet for 60 dhs. They are the only restaurant i know of in recent times, who have reduced their prices (used to be 75 dhs) As for the Royal kitchen i used to like it, but the last 2 times we have been there(once for iftar and once on a friday) we were the only customers throughout our time dining. So it feels a bit odd with all these workers and only 1 table occupied. The quality of some items dropped as well on our last visit

Not remotely convinced that kids here are better behaved either, seen far too many horrible kids of all nationalities who've been brought up by maids and showered with material things rather than quality time by their parents and have no consideration for anyone but themselves. There are plenty of spoilt kids here as well, only thing is they dont go around happy slapping or mugging people. I still remember an incident last Ramadan when a barely 16 yr old kid driving an FJ without a license, started hitting and crushing another car for not allowing him to enter from the wrong way. He actually looked worse than some of the yobs we see in the UK

As someone whose religion forbids pregnancy outside wedlock as well, I still prefer seeing teenage pregancies rather than see a new mother locked up with a baby in a jail until she can get her attested marriage certificate.... Xtrail is a good car, a friend had one, and it is as good as anything you would get under 80k. The only problem is the design looks very dated, in fact it is one of the few cars around which was last redesigned more than 6-7 years ago. The CRV is 100+ and the Rav4 wotn be cheap either For a budget of 80 i would consider the Hyundaui Tucson and Kia sportage as well, both are quite popular here. A family with a 6 month old we know has the Sportage and likes it

There is a popular forum online (hint: search using a synonym for tall buildings), and you have owners there from all freehold buildings/areas in the UAE. I suggest you go over the threads and you will how bad things can be for many investors. From sinking funds that have been looted dry to deliveries delayed for years to many projects not "cancelled" but progressing at the rate of 6 bricks laid every month Of course you also have some satisfied owners in premium properties but the majority opinion says otherwise. Yes there are greedy landlords out there, stupid as well.... We are the victims of non renewal as we contested a rent increase last year and ll had to back down. This year they did not even offer a renewal. This is a company that has many villas, one of these anonymous type offices out in jebel Ali ....they think they will get another 20k or so on top...we have looked after this villa since day one when it was built and I hope if they get new tenants, they kick the **** out of the place! And sadly the "anonymous" company wont even care. They would gladly have a pigsty like villa as long as they get rent.

It was already obvious by then the Dubai property market was starting to collapse. The RE in Dubai started decling in Oct 2008, yet 4 months later, people were blogging, posting in forums etc sying stuff like "Dubai is different" There was a quote i remember: "the business leaders of Dubai will not allow the market to go down, they will use their power and money to keep the market high etc". It took till end of 2009 for the most die hard of fans on some forums to finally keep quiet or disappear

If a tenant's cheque bounces during the period of the tenancy, the landlord would have to file a police case and face a long delay before being able to evict the tenant and meanwhile the property is being occupied and not returning any money. If lls were able to evict tenants for breaches as in other countries they mikght be more willing to accept more cheques.. I dont think there is a "long delay" in case a cheque is bounced. I have heard of pretty swift actions taken for bounced cheque holders.... And is it really hard to evict tenants who break conditions here, i think not... edited by Arch on 15/08/2011

It apparently stems from the apartment owners (landlords) not paying the service charges. Its a vicious circle; Developers wont provide services but wants service charges . Landlords wants the rent paid in 1 cheque , but wont pay service charges because he doesnt trust the developers The one who gets shafted in the end is often the tenant.

People must be paying these prices so agents just fob you off if you don't want to pay their price, so what choice are you left with? Everyones gotta have somewhere to live.... Yes the prices aren't as they were in 2008, but they are definitely on an up whether it's a false market or not, we don't have much choice in the matter".. Yes, prices are up for villas in good areas, but not for apts in general. As for "people must be paying those prices" I dont think so, some landlords may not be in a hurry to rent out their places; a lot of the investors from places like Russia, Nigeria,Sub continent etc who parked their black money or smuggling/mafia proceeds may be like that :) So the agents have more leeway to "pretend" that people are paying 20k more than what is normal. If you are in a hurry you may take it, else you will look around the market until you find something more reasonably priced. Similarly a landlord who has mortgages to pay off may be willing to be more reasonable.

I'm not a LL but for the first year we lived in Dubai (2007) I was a tenant and I honestly don't see LL trying to get the maximum rent they can as 'greedy'. . Agree. But you know what is greedy? Trying to kick out tenants in the middle of a contract so they can get higher rents Refusing to have maintenance done Becoming unreachable when required Landlords have the right to maximum rent they can get, but when they start thinking that renting out a 1 bedroom flat will entitle them to a Porsche Cayenne and a Maserati within 1 year of owning the flat, they act delusional and pretend rents are going up when they arent, and demand 1 cheque payments etc And even when times are bad, there are so many landlords who renege on maintenance, thats it creates a bad reputation for all of them. I am not talking about wear and tear maintenance, but rather more long term stuff.

Thats because many landlords are delusional. At the bottom of the market there were landlords asking for 1 cheque payments. I couldnt help notice how this incident reflects the arrogant mentality of people who break queues: A driver breaks a queue in a petrol station On being questioned, he attacks the other driver questioning him He ends up saying he was in a hurry so it was ok to jump a queue and [i'>he had no choice [/i'>but to punch the other driver for arguing with him He ends up scot free because the victim lets him go Personally i noticed one guy break a queue, when the people behind got angry he went and started kicking their car. http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/frayed-tempers-and-fist-fights-at-petrol-station-2011-08-11-1.412817 [i'>When a customer completed filling his car and left, another motorist jumped the queue from the next row, reversed his vehicle into the newly vacant slot and virtually blocked the next-in-line car. When questioned, the driver who blocked the way got furious, got out of his car and hit the driver behind him,” the eyewitness added. "He hit him so severely that the second driver sustained a serious injury just above his eyebrows. He was bleeding for about half an hour. The manager of the petrol station, called Dubai Police and an ambulance rushed in," said another witness. Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Tariq, the driver who attacked his counterpart, said: “I was in a hurry to go and found a space to fill petrol. However, the driver behind me started an argument and even verbally abused me. I had no other option but to hit him. Now I regret this incident and felt sorry for him.”[/i'>

What a load of baloney. If that was true, generations of our ancestors (including most of our parents) would be similarly traumatised as corporal punishment was the norm in schools until relatively recently (certainly when I was at school and I'm in my 40s). Excuses, excuses, excuses. Men bearing "disobedient" women was also the norm in many countries, and still is in some. When you teach kids that the only way to stop them doing something is beating them black and blue, they may very well grow up thinking its ok to beat their kids and if necessary, their wives

I was never given corporal punishment - and i think i came out fine, i hope. The main problem with such punishment meted out by teachers is that they often take their personal frustration out on children. There is a school in Abu Dhabi where very severe corporal punishment was standard 15 years back, children would sometimes bleed after being beaten with steel rulers , and boys in extreme cases were made to pull their pants down to humiliate them. Any complaint was met with "if you dont beat them, they will become hooligans etc" Thsi went on until the Ministry found out and punished the school. Physical punishment should be for yobs who vandalize and the sort, however the moment you allow it, people use it to punish even for something as trivial as not being able to memorize a poem.
