Yes they need to add more pedestrian crossings and footpaths but unfortunately things happen very slowly in Dubai. Not true, you would have noticed that when needed, things get built and completed in extremely quick time E.g. JLT park, Furjan Mall, Dubai mall metro walkway

It is easy to get angry at jaywalkers and I get too when I find them ahead of me but lets not forget that 1) Not everyone has a chauffer to pick them up. 2) The OP had to walk 15 extra minutes, there are places where one has to walk half an hour or more to reach a pedestrian crossing, something very hard in July 3) One can only wish that this harsh attitude is shown to those drivers who speed up at pedestrian crossings, and are not stopped by patrol cars

The male flight attendant refused to serve my son any fizzy drink as he said “it drives kids crazy and is also bad for their skin pores.” Skin pores? lol . Reminds me of merchandisers in one of those pharmacies where they walk up and start criticizing a customer's skin/weight/face/height ! edited by Arch on 14/01/2014

the roads are very different in dxb and ab dabs. there are more "motorways" in auh so faster speeds. . Actually it is the opposite, there used to be no real freeways in Abu Dhabi island till the Salam St tunnel was completed, and so it meant lower speeds within the island. Even now, speed limits in Abu Dhabi are lower for roads with the same number of lanes as in Dubai.

Would any of the ladies at Furjan have an idea as to what exactly is going on with the access to Jebel Ali road? Last month, a paved access road with streetlights was blocked off with concrete barriers. Since then people have been using another semi-paved access road, which today has the entry ramp levelled off so no one can enter it, the alternative now is to join the thousands of cars leaving via the Discovery Gardens side meaning half an hour to just enter SZR in the morning How does it help anyone to block off a convenient access point and make the already congested exit points even worse ?!

Articles on salary increases from that publication are best ignored. Just like weather reports. You have a headline of "workers to get 5% raise" and then when you read the report it talks about a survey of 50 companies and what they "hope" to give Then you get a headline of "temperatures drop to 4C!" And the report mentions how it is 4C at the top of Jabal Jais :)

The best place for clothes in the Bay area would be the Great Mall. There are outlet malls at Gilroy and Livermore, but the first will be an hours drive from SFO and the Great Mall wil have many of the stuff that you get at the Outlets.

Just traffic mayhem? Safety and security? Really? Have you read what people actually went through on the Palm that night? It sounded like a zombie riot movie! People blocking the paths of buses and forcing themselves on, making them totally over crowded, fights, pushing shoving, many were injured. People urinating and vomiting everywhere. Reading some accounts, I'm glad I was nowhere near any of that. It is indeed an unfortunate thought process when some people think "[i'>as long as I did not see it or face it, it does not matter[/i'>"

Working in the hospitality industry as I do I think I can honestly say that you are ill informed if you think that such staff wouldn't have access to cars. 6 of my colleagues alone this morning had horror stories regarding last night and NONE had tickets for anything they just wanted to get onto the Palm. Are you saying they were the ones? Car sharing. Taxis. Mini buses etc all were caught up in the shinanikins!! I am sure they were not laborers, the types that would have no access to net or tv

Apologies for not going into details. I felt that as we have massive labour forces here with no access to TV, Internet, and other media outlets thus wouldn't know any organisational strategies implemented! Those media outlets are more accessible to others however. Hundreds of Thousands of people live here in shared accommodations and labour camps. 'Free Entertainment' is a welcome treat for such folk and wouldn't care about waiting around etc. This would obviously add to the massive influx of traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, in that area and affect the congestion. Why attempt to turn this into some form of racial slur? It was not laborers from labor camps trying to do drive into the palm, they do not have access to cars

The area was far too small for such a large group, there was no signage, and the small number of event staff/security was completely overwhlemed and ineffective. People were trapped in the crowd.... women were crying because they were getting elbowed in the face by smaller men, people were falling down because of the pushing, fighting ensued and the security guards did nothing. After being mauled and assaulted we finally made it onto a bus that was entirely too crowded (people smashed into it like sardines!) and then waited for 2 more hours in traffic. On the bus there were more tears as people tried to leave and the drivers kept them hostage. At 11:15pm concert goers ripped open the doors of the bus to escape the hot crowds. Once the doors were open the rest of the crownd rushed towards the exits, pushing whoever was in their way"[/i'>.

, and should remember it is only expensive compared to the relatively low rents over the last three years. . One can also say the 2007/2008 rents were relatively high; 100k for a small 1 bedrom apt anyone ? The main thing that drives rental prices apart from supply is income. The vast majority of the city, and I am talking about white collar workers with families, do not earn enough to be able to afford a 100k 1 bedroom apt or a 130k 2 bedroom apt which is what rents were like in the summer of 2008. In the short run, people will take loans or use savings to not move for a year or 2 due to children's schools etc., but in the long run, it is not sustainable to have a city where the average 2 bed in non-prime locations costs 50 - 70% of the income of a white collar worker

Like I wrote before, to much mockery on here, you can't expect people to invest in Dubai and then limit the return on investment. Of course you can, otherwse it will be like capitalism on steroids where all that matters is whether investors can extract their pound of flesh regardless of what happens to the majority of residents. The new decree is a very fair one and it "limits return on investment" to a certain extent.

. Korean food is delicious!!!!!!!!!! Cough ***cough***subjective matter ! I agree Korea is very safe though. The best sites in Seoul include the Namsan Tower and the 3 palaces, and my favorite the Korean War Museum. Americans may find it extremely poignant and touching, particularly when going through the list of KIA and MIA veterans given by state. As for the "R" word, my personal experience in 1 week was that they do not display it regardless of what they may be feeling. Some parts in Seoul not frequented by tourists south of the river may feel a bit weird when you find you are the only non-Korean in sight among hundreds at a subway station or mall but I did not notice any negative behavior edited by Arch on 18/12/2013 edited by Arch on 18/12/2013

Regardless of which side you support in Syria, the truth is that you did not have this situation 3 or 7 or 10 years ago. You had a bad economy, a powerful govt which did not like dissent, stagnation and unemployment. But you did not have a situation when more than a million of people were forced to leave and become refugees in other countries having to beg or freeze

Thanks Arch, I appreciate your advice. I know I shouldn't let this man upset me and I know his behaviour towards me is basically an empty threat, but it is highly annoying that he feels free to behave this way and basically imply that I should shut up and do as I am told because I am a woman. . There are lots of empty threats made by people from countries which is why this country has a strict law against threats and even the "i will feed you to dogs" threat that is common in some 3rd world places will send a person to jail here. However it is not good to involve LE except as a last resort simply because people fitting the profile of making such threats have another abhorrent side to them, and that is when faced with the law they start swearing on their parents/honor on how they did not do so and so

Then, he said: "This is Arab country, in this country, a man can do something very bad to his wife if she speaks against him" which I took to be very offensive and threatening. Some people import their trashy attitudes from their home cultures, and what he said is categorically wrong. In this country, no man can do something "very bad" to his wife and get away with it. Recent news cases also confirm that. re the mashine i would buy one myself, and send an official notice that I bought it and so I will take it when I leave the unit edited by Arch on 09/12/2013

1) Do not judge yourself by your job hunt experience. In many cases, if you are not called for an interview it is not because you are not smart enough, but because you are not stupid enough for the position. I know it sounds harsh but that is the case in companies where drone workers are preferred rather than those who can think for themselves 2) There are mafias based on states or even cities within states and of course religion. That is why you will see even Indians complain on how their state of origin means they are not considered for some positions in many companies 3) The whole nationality pay structure, which operates on the flawed principle that every person from one country applying for one position has the same living standards, intelligence, work level makes things tougher.

Pay the fine, pay a lesser fine and have his car impounded for a month, or have his car impounded for 3 months. He was at the time going away for the entire summer, so had his car impounded and left for 3 months! Basically used it as a garage service for his car, which is ridiculous and no deterrent from doing it again whatsoever. Lol, this reminds me of a joke Man goes to a bank in Manhattan and asks for 2000$ in loan Bank asks for a collateral, and he offers them his car The man returns in a few weeks, pays back the loan, and 100$ The bank finds out he is rich and asks him why he took out such a small loan He answers: "Where else in NYC would I be able to keep my car for a few weeks for 100$?" :)

True about connections. I suppose then it comes down to which you hate more.... waiting around for flights or paying for the second bag.... You can avoid both by taking the direct EY/EK flights. They used to be very expensive but I noticed some good deals recently, for e.g. to Dulles on EK/EY direct for less than 4000 is a wonderful deal. We chose BA the last few times but the transfer at Heathrow is not a pleasant experience

Fijifranny; there are 2 broad cases 1) You have people able to afford a room who do not do so because they want to save. I have heard of married couples in good jobs earning 10k between them who choose not only to share a flat, but share a room with other couples. This is absolutely wrong and disgusting 2) On the other hand, there are many people who are paid very low even if they are in white collar jobs. In many companies, an office worker gets 4-5000. How can a person earning 4000 all inclusive afford a room on her own when it costs at least 2000? And how can someone earning 6000 rent a flat which asks for a 1 or 2 cheque payment of 30-40,000 dhs? There is a disconnect between private sector wages for mid-level jobs and the cost of accomodation and taxis. edited by Arch on 04/12/2013

Are there not other places for that amount of rent? It is not as if there are no more empty places in Dubai that they will all be homeless It is horrible to have 18 people in a 2 bed apt, unfortunately people accept low pay and bad conditions and that allows such situations. And before anyone jumps at me, there are white collar workers from that country(ies) who live 5 or 6 to a room, i.e. people earning 5,000, not 1000.

I am not easily fooled and generally have my wits about me and this would have struck me as genuine rather than a scam. I would think that the one child went inside to collect the food; the father walked down the road ( maybe out of embarrassment) and the other child followed him. edited by Genie on 03/12/2013 The reason it felt weird was because 1) Biryani, which he asked for was not on the menu, which was displayed through pictures outside the restaurant 2) The man, not badly dressed at all, walked a long way away though there were no shops nearby where someone would see him. 3) The kid that followed was not on the scene initially, but after the man spoke, he gestured and he popped out of nowhere and ran with DH inside, seemed to be a bit too young as well

1) It is not just about Hessa St, it is about the fact that you have 3 mega freeways (SZR, Khail, and old Emirates), and very few minor freeways to connect them , particularly south of Downtown Dubai. The Umm Suqeim freeway completion will make things better and it would help to have another small freeway to connect all 3 freeways 2) Laws are there, but until enforced won't make a change. Seatbelt laws are there as are laws against using cellphoness but the prevalent tinting makes it difficult to enforce them 3) Parking in Dubai mall was much better when the Fashiop parking building had the straight access to Level 6 and the free access from levels 6 and 10 to exit diectly, for some reason they closed all those accesses and things went worse. Cinema parking is good though if you know your way, with the awful speedbumps on some levels being the main problem

Was wondering if someone faced this supposed scam, and more importantly to figure out what the scam was DH goes into a restaurant to order a takeout, and near the door, but at a spot not visible from the restaurant has a man with 2 boys, around 9 and 6 years old tell him: "i had a bypass operation and do not have money, could you order some Biryani for us along with your order", his first reaction is that it is an odd request but not a scam as the guy does not ask for money but asks for food instead. However, as he enters the restaurant, the younger boy accompanies him inside the restaurant, while the older boy walks outside and the man starts walking away from the restaurant door . The combination of these 3 actions sends alarm bells ringing and he prompty leaves the restaurant and drives off. I am 99% sure it was a scam of some sort, but the only possibility i can think of is something very sinister and not the usual fake wound scam. Can anyone tell or guess what was the scam ?

Why can't we rejoice in the festivities instead of airing these pessimistic views? All your views are based on assumptions and not fact. If you feel that your landlord has increased your rent unfairly then take him/her to the rent committee. If the cost of living gets too high then maybe it's time to look at downsizing or living elsewhere. Complaining about it on the forum won't change anything. These are the issues of the global economy, not just Dubai and its expo win. You have all the other threads to rejoice in, this thread was created to discuss the Expo's effect on house prices :) Rent increases of 30-40% have little to do with the global economy

Dubai is really pulling ahead with its infrastructure ( transportation facilities, roads, etc) compared to other cities in the region and certainly it's one of the most attractive and safest Arabic places in which to do business and live. So it's the ideal city for a regional headquarters and a base. You do not need to be humble; Dubai [i'>is the best [/i'>Arab city for business. And it was in 2006 as well, but I'm sure you know why it was not for a period between 2007 and 2010; because costs were getting too high, and the economic slump, companies started considerin Doha and Abu Dhabi. However in 2011 and 2012, Dubai finished major road works, and the reduced cost of living meant it again became popular. There was talk of a further petrol price increase which did not go through in 2011, that was another plus for maintaining Dubai's position So in order to maintain its retained status, it will need to ensure no major increases in cost of business, and no major disruptions to its infrastructure.

A very balanced piece from Jong LaSalle, propery researchers who are generally neutral: http://www.thenational.ae/uae/expo-2020/massive-boost-for-dubai-jobs-tourism-and-real-estate [i'>Expo 2020 is expected to add 2 per cent to Dubai’s Gross Domestic Product, as well as create 277,000 jobs. That increased demand would ordinarily mean price and rent increases over the next seven years, said Craig Plumb, head of research at the company. However, there is the danger that owners could misconstrue that long-term arc, and immediately push up prices. [b'>“Owners may expect rents to increase overnight that wouldn’t necessarily be justified just on the back of Expo 2020. There’s no logic why rents should increase in the Marina or Downtown tomorrow, just because of the Expo in seven years’ time.[/b'> “If that happens, it could be a negative situation as it would prolong all this talk about the property market being a bubble.”[/i'>

in all fairness, not many... but that's what Dubai is best at doing - MARKETING... now that this baby is in our hands, they will ensure that people all around the world know what this means and how exciting it will be!! around twenty years ago not many people knew what DUBAI was all about... they'd only heard of Kuwait and Iraq (thanks to the Gulf War)... but just look at how Shk Mo changed that!!! you just watch how they ensure that this is even more talked about than the summer Olympics! :) The Olympics will always be the Olympics, an Expo is different and caters to a larger visiting crowd but much smaller audience And actually in the 80s Dubai was very well known in South Asia. It was synonymous with gold and jobs and electronics. People would go to Bahrain or Oman, but referred to it as "going to Dubai". South Asia was different back then and electronics and appliances were very expensive so that expats would take home TVs and even fridges in some cases ! Rich families would do their wedding shopping in Dubai, and many still do

I am happy to read that many people are doing well in the USA. I certainly don't see that myself but i want to believe that things are going well there... Unfortunately only a few are doing well; the middle classes are finding it increasingly tough because of a lack of hiring; "new job" numbers do not reveal how many are for temp jobs with lower pay and no benefits

Yes, that is true. The situation in the USA right now, for one, seems dire. This expo can only be a good thing and something to look forward to in the long-term. Does anyone know which months it will run? If you speak to many people in the US they will say things are going fine ; the ones that deal in property or have a lot of stocks as stock markets are doing very well. But the middle classes are having it tough, and on top of that there is this annoying right wing mentality that if someone is suffering financially, it is because they are lazy and they deserve it In most parts of the world since 2010 including the US, Dubai and South Asia you have a situation where the well-off think everything is fine just because they are seeing their assets and income increase, the poor are stagnant so things are not getting worse but not getting better either, and the middle class are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their standard of life as either inflation-adjusted incomes are reducing or because of job insecurity and redundancies. The good thing about Dubai is that companies do not treat jobs as the first thing to be slashed as happens in the US, and so job security is higher. edited by Arch on 28/11/2013
