Check out Marina as well...I have a couple of lovely 'chinese-style antique' trunks from them. I love their furniture but I am on a budget Im afraid:( I think they also call it Ottomans? Maybe I should just search dubizzle ;) Oh, sorry. (though sometimes heading to their warehouse in Umm Suquiem does pay dividends, even out of sale time, seriously) I did see a nice faux leather ottoman box thing, long and low at Home Center here in Muscat this week...surely the stock can't be too different? I did think at the time that it was a shame I didnt really have a good reason to buy it!

I *think* sometimes agencys get a flat rate/group rate/special agency rate..there'll be a limited seats/beds/rooms ratio thing to it, bit like an agency doing airline flights? Unless it's one of those all in one flight/accomadation type things that some agencys do at a HUGELY special rate, I sometimes think it's not worth the bother.

You can, you just need to go to RERA with everything. We have done it, but probably 4 years ago now, back when the whole registration thing seemed to be coming in. It was my understanding that if you hadnt registered your tenancy then if it came to a dispute the rent committee couldnt help you. Hubby did the registration, it was a long time ago, so am VERY short on details.

That is a really sweet idea Nyranee, but for varying reasons, not really an option. He and his buddies have all taken a polytech course on how to operate their computers (most pc's as ancient as the folk!) and have progressed to being able to forward a simple email. :) Bless. Links cause all manner of problems, most of which I can't talk them through from this side of the world. if there isnt a commercially made DVD, I'll go the you tube route onto dvd so he can play it through his TV.

Our service here was lovely, i don't now how you can fail to be moved regardless. Nice (and sad) to see the young ones wearing their family medals and ensuring this tradition carries on. BMAP, your kids service sounds really really special, how lucky, Lil miss I think is nearly ready for her pilgrimage to Turkey, very proud of how she carried herself this morning (as I'm sure you were too BMAP!) just trying convince himself that going for the 100 anniversary is NOT a good idea...99, yes, 101, yes...but 100? When we last went it was one of the most profoundly moving experiences of my life, and I want to share that with our daughter, just not when half the world has desended on that tiny beach as well. Simples...get hold of your embassy/consulate here...I am sure they will have something happening for Rememberance Day.

They're for the living Izzy, so I'm with SD and emmess...if you can say your goodbyes without going and be content that you have loved him well, then that is the main point. Personally, once the older generation get to a certain age funerals become a bit...really struggling to find a decent description....competitive? Repetitive? A roster they can check off of who came and who didnt? A social? Some people really NEED the ritual for it to be real, and some people just don't. Do whats right for you and your immediate family without a thought for those 67 old biddy aunts who you know are going to cluck over you and your show/non show...till the next funeral.

elle, I can only say that all family dynamics will be different. Welcome to my 30 years of struggle to come terms with my mother abandoning us. There will be times of rage, longing, despair, frustration, even jealousy and a whole heap more. The best I can advise is to step back right now. Be pleasant, but don't actually put yourself out, or be the only one initiating contact. You have a whole life time to be the best person you are...thats part of your growth as you come to terms with your childhood, and who you are as a product of your environment. If you were raised, as I was by a nurturing (if rather odd) parent of whatever description then you have a strong base to draw from. The other parent or the absent parent did actually lose the right to be a parent as such, so does need to meet you as a human being in your own right. that will take time. You will change over time, you'll run a warren of emotions, but you are a good person. None of this is your fault. You have allowed yourself to be open to someone, welcoming them into your life to find out the reality doesnt meet the need you have of a parent. I'd let that expectation go. I can tell you, that one day you will forgive them, and one day you may even have a relationship with them. Trust your best instincts, but don't try to take on the whole healing process by yourself...look after you and heal you, but you can't orchestrate a relationship to fit a pigeon hole, or make them be the person you feel you need them to be.

yup, the mangos up high where they can't be reached are already looking size and shapewise like the big pakistani ones, can't wait for the ripe ones. But in the meantime I will be making the chutney..thanks tkoshy, thats exactly what I was after! (feel free to come pick and eat them if youre out our way :)) As for you DR, you don't need an invitation to come eat our green mangos if youre saving yours :D

the supervisor and the person did seem to sign just using one hand, which prompted me to ask. Maybe, there has been no formal education? who knows, but if a system does use one hand, then maybe thats the answer, and if I do sign, than that will be recognised. I don't want to use an international sign, even inexpertly, and get in trouble if it means something else, or if my intention is misinterpreted.

I don't know if they can read english & I don't like to make assumptions. They do have a job dealing with multinational people face to face, and are just at a training level, so supervised at the moment. What I want to do is make any future possible interaction I have with this person stress free for them...I got the impression today there was no lip reading (but as I wasnt aware the person was profoundly deaf for a few minutes, I'm guessing my impressions could be off/ and the person was in a training situation which skews things somewhat)...so long as I know some of my most basic signs will work, for greetings, and plesentries, I'm sure it will make a difference. thanks

Slice green mangoes and sprinkle salt and chilly powder over it... yummy! yup, thats what one lady said, but i thought she ment when they were ripe (cept she said silly powder which made me giggle)...like putting lime juice and salt on them, which is what I would do. Right...guess am going to have to try it on the green crunchy ones then.

oh, meh DR. I thought of you when I posted and when it happened. Please don't worry, it was one small instance, and while I admit it stung, particularly because it was a shock here and so unexpected and out of the character that we've come to expect and enjoy, it really was just a small instance. I quess it stuck with me, as it stood out as being so unusual. Rest assured our new home delights all of us. And I won't be wandering off from the butcher while he does his work anytime soon. xxxx eta: and youre so right about the sticking up for myself a bit thing, I think my more hairy adventures here have been more about my worry of offending someone (and having that taken advantage of) than anything else. For the most part, it's been a real delight, honestly...you have a great town my girl. edited by arohadxb on 17/04/2012

I actually love this scenario now - it enables me to say to DH "Oh you need to do this as they won't talk to me" - get used to it and enjoy it. :D Saves me lots of tedious phone calls. ugh, after becoming dam near homicidal on a phone call to our favorite bank the other week, I got himself to deal with the problem.(I attempted it initially as HE lost MY debit card). After 4 hours of the smug beggar dealing with the incompetency with no result, apparently it turns out his experience was far worse than mine...I had started to feel vaguely sorry for him up to that point. Now, I'm back to your methodolgy...Visa says I can't work, phone/power/water/TV/banks won't have a bar of me...it's all yours sweetpea.

Having seen some of the most 'disaster waiting to happen' things in hospital carparks over the last 6 months, quite aside from spitting and the like, that just doesnt surprise me in the least. As for, do they sometimes spit because you are a woman? I feel that sometimes, yes they do. You can generally get an impression of malice and deliberation...eye contact, a smirk. Just the other day a checkout lady (and I am aware of how silly/petty this sounds) made me move the entire load of grocerys (one handed) up the converyor belt manually, then looked me in the eye after I had paid and used the conveyor belt for the local behind me in the que. They had a jolly good laugh at my expense, and left me just staggered really. There are very clever ways to make a person feel unwelcome/unwanted, or to thumb a nose at your supposed prosperity, but I am unsure what benefit they really achieve with it.

Went to Cara and they not only do the straight name thingy, but do the swishy pendant thing as well and with a much shorter time for the making. (wanted himself to get me a pear drop pendant of my arabic name for xmas, and he 'ran out of time', huh)

You will have to file with the police I think. How would you feel if your next agency maid had been caught stealing and then knowingly allowed to work again in your home? By saying it's 'only' 500dh that you know of, youre effectively sending the message that it's ok steal, that you will get away with it, and will keep your job. Regardless of the message it sends to the rest of the agency staff, this person has access to your home and things and violated a trust. A hard lesson best earnt for her.

@ Cleopatra : There is a big difference between people who, willingly and knowingly, participate in traffic, sports and what have you, and animals whose decisions are made for them @ Lolacat: I would say your comment is no more inaccurate, irresponsible, ignorant, naive and offensive then any of the other posters. You do not know anything about my lifestyle, let alone my clothes, food or handbags.. We are talking about race horses - it is in their nature to run! You don't honestly believe that a horse would give that kind of performance if it didn't want to? e.g look at the horses in the Grand National, even if they haven't got a Jockey on them anymore they are still running along side the other riders jumping the hurdles, surely it has a choice now and still chooses to run and jump. These animals are BRED to run, there is a difference. While it might be in their nature, the breeding process is such that what attributes that man decides are desirable are the ones encouraged and specifically targeted. Of the 'stars' of the track you see today, how many rejects/injuries/deaths were had in the lead up to that 'result'?

interesting that both of those cravings are for mint...peppermint being a great natural remedy for heartburn/digestion stuff and whatnot whilst pregnant. I just craved food...the sweeter the better, icecream, crunchie bars, you name it, I ate it! After having been a vegatarian for 20 years, around the 5 month mark I had an uncontrolable steak craving, that just kept on happening. The fridge smelt awful to me everytime I opened it, so hubby was sent out at all times of the day and night to get very very specific food from certain rather awesome burger joints. I ate enough eggs to have cleaned out a farm, and enough cheese to feed a third world country for some time. I ate yoghurt (previously my dairy intake was cheese only, and all of a sudden I was eating and drinking unthinkable things) Baby was a right wee greedy guts :D

Am wondering why I bother so much. Because Karma IS good. You might not see it immediately, or even get what it is when it does come back to pay you, but it does come back :) Aaah well I don't o it for the Karma - because it just naturally and on that topic - can someon please help me save a one year old cross beagle from being abandoned? Please, even if just to offer a foster home. who does do it for karma? Just a natural way of life....now, if you could post the wee beagle across here, I'd have him/her in a heartbeat!

Is lovely isnt it? like a little miracle. Had the same yesterday...lost my phone walking to the beach, never noticed until some hours later. Had given it up for lost entirely and was gearing up to do the whole new phone number thing, when a taxi driver arrived at my door with my phone, which he had collected from across town! I still have no idea how the phone got from our beach to across town, but there you go. Karma, it's a beautiful thing.

It was amusing last year...heaps of companies and individuals got involved with switching off for earth hour, and the race track was lit up like disney, just wickedly bad timing for it I guess. Half of me thinks about what an impact it would make if the races did endorse the whole movement and take part, and what kudos there would be if they did, to thinking about how it would effect the highlight of not just the racing communities year, but the jewel in Sheik M's crown.

Jordan. Gallipoli is something else, but I'd go when the kids are a little older. Petra, you can manage with a stroller for most of it, but one of those backpack things would probably be easier. Jordan is a really wonderful place to visit.
