[i'>Seems lot of think germans are like a 'cash cow' ....usually germany is paying biggest amount to support other countries.[/i'> Really? I think not. Germany has been a massive beneficiary of the Euro. Why? Because diluting the Deutschmark with the currencies of less impressive economies has galvanised German exports: [i'>Competitiveness gains mean Germany now has a currency that’s about 20 percent weaker than would have been the case if the deutsche mark still existed, said Sheets. He calculates the lower currency lifts Germany’s nominal trade surplus by about 4 percent of gross domestic product, or 100 billion euros. The currency benefit could rise closer to 30 percent due to safe- haven flows, he said. [/i'> http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-07-17/merkel-export-machine-s-gains-exceed-bailout-costs.html In the meantime, having their currency linked to the Industrial strength of the Rhine has decimated the PIIGS. Relinquishing national sovereignty to unelected Euro bureaucrats? The Euro is a fiscal, political, economic catastrophe. The sooner it implodes, the better.

[i'>listening to K.D Lang non stop? Or just a general sapphic vibe?[/i'> LOL! Daza, remember you said you knew someone who had remodelled their kitchen/bathroom in AR and could recommend contractors? That thread got vaporised for some reason, but would appreciate if you've got any names. Sorry to hijack this funny thread!

[i'>Ok very scared now after reading Artemis article. [/i'> Enigma, it wasn't my intention to scare you, but I think you should be aware that negative side effects like dry eye can be caused by laser surgery. You are unlikely to be adequately informed of this by someone trying to sell you a procedure. This is why it's really important to have a consultation with a reputable ophthalmologist as to your suitability for surgery, I'd recommend Dr Safar, he's at the American Hospital. I decided it wasn't worth it because I'm pretty happy with my daily disposable lenses and I didn't want to run the risk of dry eye, so the risks outweighed the benefits for me, but only you can make that decision, just make sure you do plenty of research, just as you would before having any surgery. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

[i'>sounds too good to be true[/i'> Enigma, as I've no doubt you're aware, things that sound too good generally require extreme caution. Have you any idea about the potential side effects? Like you, I was considering this, but I decided against it because I was warned that there could be negative consequences which would be irreversible. If you have a tendency towards dry eye, this surgery might dramatically exacerbate that existing condition. Or cause it in those with no experience of dry eye. Do plenty of research before you go ahead, Dr Safar in the American Hospital is very good, I would strongly advise you have plenty of consultations before going ahead. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2777061/Blinded-High-Street-More-women-enticed-cheap-deals-laser-eye-surgery-But-say-s-left-agony-struggling-see.html

Zellweger even in her prime was always kinda plain, guess that's why she got the Bridget Jones gig. Now she just looks like an alien stuffed with pillow filler, too much, too soon, bad work. Monica Bellucci is over 40, but she manages to look uber glam, without looking like she did ten rounds with a load of silicone. All Kudos to her and Salma Hayek.

Tinkerbell, Tell your friend to contact BinKitty collective or Feline Friends, where there are hundreds of cats and kittens facing a dire future because they've been tossed out by their owners or because some fool failed to responsibly neuter their pet. I find it somewhat bizarre that anybody needs to [i'>urgently [/i'> adopt a kitten. There is a terrible problem here with people developing a fad for something furry and then when they grow bored, they simply abandon the poor creature onto the streets. I do hope that your friend is planning a lifelong commitment to whichever cat she adopts.

Rafflesia, ignore the comments complaining about traffic. That's no excuse. Report her to the police. Arabian Ranches has a major problem with people repeatedly breaking the speed limit because they're too lazy or too stupid to allocate sufficient time for their journey. The speed limit is 40km, yet suburban clowns zoom around at 60km, oblivious to the danger they pose to children and pets. The worst offenders apparently believe that having kids in the car will let others give them a pass for their dangerous driving. Report her. Next time she could kill someone.

Rosie, thanks for posting this, it's awful that so many cats get run over in Arabian Ranches. The reason for this is the idiotic way many people drive, the speed limit is 40km, but you see suburban speed freaks racing round like they're at [i'>Ferrari World,[/i'> oblivious to the threat they pose to pets and children. It's absolutely pathetic to see these clowns zooming round what is supposed to be a residential community with complete disregard for the posted limit. As discussed in another thread, there doesn't seem to be any effort to inform pet owners if their cat is killed, apparently they are disposed of by the gardeners, so it's really helpful of you to post this here, hopefully the cat's family will get to hear what has happened.

Guinness 2, Please, please encourage whoever found this to go to the police. Also if someone could take photographs of this terrible scene, distressing though that maybe. Please also encourage whoever found those poor cats to contact BinKitty collective, apparently they have a strong presence with members living in Ranches. Another thought is that if one of the cats was microchipped, it would be a really good idea to go to the vets, they might be able to trace him. Whoever did this wicked thing must not be allowed to get away with it. It is absolutely unbelievable to have subjected living creatures to such a [b'>deliberate, slow, agonising [/b'> death. Some of the people who have cats in this country are capable of acts of just astonishing cruelty. Our cat was tossed out of our last villa when his family moved, they took his collar off and he was left to starve in the garden. I hope whoever did this is traced and punished.

[i'>so I spoke to security and asked them to leave a note for all the guards that cat was killed by a car in case anyone came asking. I have my doubts the owners ever found out in either case [/i'> Wow, that confirms my worst suspicions. Good for you Daza for intervening to alert the guards, but as you say, the likelihood of that information being transmitted to the cats' owners is pretty minimal. Sad stuff. I wonder if there is anyway to get the policy on this amended so that the gardeners inform the gate guys when they find dead cats and give a description of them? I'm hoping that it doesn't happen very often, but given the insane way some people drive around here and given the fact that speeding appears to have zero penalties, perhaps it happens more frequently than one would imagine.

[i'>on two occasions I've seen community gardeners putting a dead cat in to a bag and taking them away.[/i'> Daza, that's very sad, it's what I've suspected might happen. Do you happen to know how the cats died? Were they hit by cars? I wonder if there was any effort to contact the cats' owners, how dismal if there were not because they would be the same position as the OP. I wish there was a more concerted effort here to treat pets as pets, instead of disposable items. It's not the gardeners fault, no doubt this is what they've been instructed to do.

Hi Scottish, That's awful, our cat went missing for a couple of days and I was very worried, so I really feel for you. I've often wondered about this question myself, I think who you should contact depends on where you live. Do you live in a community, like Ranches? If so, speak to all the security guards on the gates near your villa and give them posters with pictures of your cat, also ask them how dead pets are removed, so you can directly contact the relevant authority. Was your cat wearing an ID tag and DM tag? Unfortunately unless they are wearing a DM tag, being microchipped might not help because they won't be scanned, this is what I was told, but I don't know if it's true. Can you ask your neighbour exactly when he saw your cat and how certain he is about the identity? I know it's very distressing, but my advice is to go and knock on doors, carry a poster of your cat with a reward advertised, make contact with maids and gardeners in your area, someone will have seen something. Also, he might have got into a fight and be hiding somewhere near, best time to look is dusk, call his name, walk around your area, shake his food to attract his attention. The best of luck Scottish and if you get any clarity on this matter, please post it here as other people might benefit from finding out. I know that there was a letter in [i'>Seven Days [/i'>from a distraught guy whose cat was run over by some idiotic driver who didn't even bother to stop. This in a residential community where numpties are continually breaking the speed limit. Disgraceful. Good luck Bambi, I hope you find him.

Miss M, first of all, what you're doing, imo, is very kind and you clearly care about this poor family of cats. It is sad that your neighbours haven't got something more serious to quibble about than your kindness, but in terms of how to respond, it's unlikely that you will change their minds. Would it be possible to just continue what you're doing? Obviously getting them neutered would be the most responsible course of action, I know nothing about feline care in RAK, but I goggled and came up with this: http://www.rakawc.com Maybe you could contact them, explain that you have a family of garden cats and ask for some advice? There is such a major problem with former pet cats abandoned by irresponsible, selfish people who take off their collar, toss them onto the street to starve and move on to their next furry fad. It's appalling. Good for you Miss M for trying to help and I really hope for a happy outcome.

Hi Peta, If I were you I would start looking for her, walk around the area near you and take some dry food which you can shake to attract her attention? Call her name, maybe make up some posters and put them thru doors? She's probably nearby, but either trapped or scared, if you walk around calling for her, you might hear her. Good luck.

Great kudos to you for taking in this beautiful lost cat and trying to locate his owners. Unfortunately I don't have any information about him, but I wish you the very best of luck in tracking down whomever microchipped him. Have you tried passing his microchip number to some vets in Dubai? Perhaps they might have a record of him or be able to post his details to a larger audience? BinKitty collective might also be a good place to post his details. Here's some numbers: Vienna Vet: 043883827 British Vet : 043380406

Hi Sue, Thanks for the warning, please could you clarify what you mean by [i'>fairly recent poisonings[/i'>? I haven't heard anything about that and would appreciate more information. On a separate but related topic, have you noticed how fast some people drive around Ranches? There was a very sad letter in [i'>Seven Days [/i'> by a guy whose cat had been killed and the speeding driver didn't even bother to stop - few seem to obey the speed limit, despite the fact that this is a residential community with children and animals.

Lolacat, some Western expats are in the privileged position of working in jobs which are highly skilled and their expertise highly paid. Obviously, if an employee is failing to obey the law or is failing to perform well at work, that will have serious repercussions, irrespective of pay grade. But in the case under discussion, there is no suggestion of illegal behaviour. It's laughable to suggest that international companies routinely scrutinise the sartorial choices of their employees at the weekend for no reason. As anybody who has been here more than five seconds knows, the experience of maids as opposed to professionals in the workforce is barely comparable. Professionals with international skills and the consequent mobility which this brings versus domestic help from impoverished countries? Maids are in the unenviable position of working in unskilled jobs where they are seen as disposable and they often live with their employer, subjecting them to 24 hour scrutiny. I am grateful that I come from the kind of privileged background which means I don't have to walk in their shoes and I never cease to be amazed by some of the attitudes exhibited towards maids.

Threads like this are interesting because they demonstrate how some people believe they have a right to dictate every detail of someone else's life, including what she wears during her one day off, simply because she mops their floor. I wouldn't want a total stranger living with me and would certainly never wish to be in the onerous situation of controlling every aspect of this stranger's behaviour. Having a maid is a huge responsibility and it seems that often it's an adversarial one. At least judging by some of the stuff you read on this forum.

Hi, Why are you examining her social media postings? Surely her Facebook postings are her concern. Would you be happy if she was scrutinising yours and passing judgement? Why are you concerned about what she's wearing during non working hours? Isn't she allowed to wear what she chooses on her day off? If her work is satisfactory, why are you focusing on irrelevant stuff which isn't impacting her job?

Hi, Are you planning to hire a car when you are there? I would advise it, you can drive around the island and it's really beautiful, I remember visiting a perfume place which sold oils in wooden bottles. I think you could easily visit the other islands in a week, the food there is fantastic, which hotel are you going to stay in? I'd be interested if anybody has any hotel recommendations, I was there many years ago and am thinking of doing a return trip, it's a fab destination.

Hi, I would recommend Sani Serve because they did an extremely thorough job and are very professional. I had to call them in a couple of months after another often cited company had only done superficial cleaning and left mould etc inside the AC. I won't be making that mistake again. Sani Serve are expensive, but worth it imo and I intend to use them in the future based on my last experience with them.
