Ladies, I need some help here. I have a friend who has just been sent over here with her husband and two very very young kids, promised for a job in Dubai. They have just been told one week into their stay here that they have to move to Ras Al Khaimah and they are now there. They don't know a single person, and their apartment still doesn't have internet, still haven't gotten a car (because of 101 restrictions..) so they're really lost. Is there any expat families living there. They are in Al Hamra. If you live there, it would be very much appreciated if you could give them a call just to say 'Hi' and maybe show them that there is an expat that lives there lol. I'm quite worried about them. I don't want to leave her number here but if you could drop me your email I will write you. They had to buy all their furniture 2 days after arriving, from Ikea and Ikea doesn't even deliver to RAK so they had to pay for delivery! My husband and I are going to drive up next weekend to bring some stuff for them and see what else we can do. Gosh, one of the many 'Moving to Dubai' nightmare stories!

Girls I've only been in the country for 4 weeks so I don't even know what number to call or who the RTA is until you told me :( I know now what to do in the future. Thanks for your advise. Yet on your blog you say that you have read all the FAQs about Dubai? You must have missed the ones about taxis and what to be aware of? http://www.dubaifaqs.com/taxi-dubai.php Wow I can't believe this thread had gone on for so long! I've made the complaint already this morning. Anyways thanks spongemonkey for the link - and no we didn't read through every single thing on that site before we came here.Just the this and thats on what to wear/not to wear, visas, rules. There's so much to learn. And to everyone else, I appreciate the headsup/input. Next time I get into a taxi, any taxi, I'll just note down the license beforehand. edited by ashesc on 31/05/2012

Fair enough, don't feel bad you were obviously put in a horrible position. FYI normally cabs have a sticker on the window (usually the rear passenger windows) with the vehicle's RTA reg and the RTA number (042080808), so you can call immediately and they will know which car and which driver you're reporting Thanks - I appreciate that !

Thanks for your advise. erm sorry to say so, but same rules any country. Look, I was going to make a complaint but I just didn't know what number to call in the car. I just wanted to get the two elderlies back home because I wouldn't want them to stand in the sun at the side of the motorway with 7-8 bags of groceries in the boot,if I asked him to stop the car. One lady is 70++ and she's really not in the best health. There are many things I could've done better - I'll keep it in my mind. Alright guys? Thanks

Alright I'll do that today, thanks girls. Ishehere - yea I normally sit at the back, but one of the older ladies (she's 70++) that I was with was ... well she needed the space, so I just sat in front. First time! What a nightmare. I'm glad he didn't touch me but I was just disgusted anyhow. DH just came back last night from work trip and I told him about him and he was just shocked. I'll make a report today.

Ladies, I've read through some other threads but am getting quite confused so I thought I'll shout out anyways. I have a job lined up and I'm considering getting a work visa and therefore a residence visa with the company. I'm just thinking that it might be better, just in case my husband, for any reason at all loses his job with his employer. Now, I'm thinking that if I am not happy with this job and I want to leave it - what happens then? Can my husband sponsor me straight away? Or do I need to leave the country the moment my "residence visa" with the previous employer expires, and then come back at a "tourist", and THEN get my husband to sponsor me? Any advise will be very much appreciated

I might have some spare vouchers if you need them as we have the Rotana membership so don't need the entertainer vouchers. Yorky - will be keen to trade vouchers with you for 1 Prego voucher on Friday! Let me know if you'll be out and about daytime next few days. Now I'm thinking I should get one of those Entertainer Books - worth it I suppose?? We have the HSBC Entertainer Books which has vouchers to quite a few restaurants too... which is why we're trying to put off getting another book ... hmm...

Yorky, I'll be glad to trade your spare Prego vouchers for something in the HSBC Entertainer book? Let me know. Not too sure how to do the trade, hmm, any ideas

Hey ladies, Our search for a home continues. Really like the two bedroom apartment in this building. They're asking for 110k. I was wondering how much can you bargain when it comes to rental in dubai? How is it like staying here, have you had any problems? What about groceries, where's the nearest? Traffic out to szr during peak hour? How much did you pay for a two bedroom? Gjp help thanks :)

Roloqueen, Thanks so much for your detailed reply, we really appreciate it! Yeah, the location and also sea view was one of the plus things that we really liked about this apartment. How do you find the gym? It looks small but that's for hubby to decide I guess, I'm more of a pool person, haha, and I really liked it. Ah, good thing you told us about the construction site going on too, but I think we'll be okay with that. How is the traffic getting out andin from apartment to Sheikh Zayed Road at peak hour mornings/evening? And also in the weekends? As it's quite close to the hotels, does the music ever become a problem in the weekends or late at night?

Hey all, I'm sure this has been asked before but I"m going to shout out again :) a) Monthly bills Husband and I are looking at apartments in the marina at the moment and trying to get an idea of how much bills/month are for a 2-bedroom apartment. It's just going to be the two of us staying there, spare room will be for when relatives/friends come. So things like electricity, water, tv license or something like that? Internet. What else? b) Skyview tower Is there anyone staying in this tower at the moment? I think it's opposite the Grosvenor House Hotel. Have you had any problems living there?

Hey girls, Anyone done the night desert safari in May before? Mum's here and we want to do it next Saturday, but I was out for 5 mins in the 41degree sun and almost melted. I suppose it's slightly 'cooler' with the 'breeze' in the desert? Or way hotter? Haha any advice, or should I wait till it gets cooler in like..... October?

Sounds like a mix-up/misunderstanding, most Arabs (same gender to same gender) greet each other with a peck on the cheek......perhaps they meant a long peck on the mouth in public is punishable;) Oh thanks for clarifying that, lol! Scared me a little there reading that in the front page newspaper!! :)

SeaofLove/KiranB, Thanks for your advice and input! We have found Carrefour at Emirates Mall and was pretty overwhelmed at how big it was and how much stuff it stored. No queues either because there are 54 counters. Amazing :) Good to know about how slow things takes - we waiting for a long time from my husband's 'first phonecall' to the interview to getting here. I don't anticipate getting a job and starting next week, haha. I'll just start hunting now and take this time to adjust to a new environment I guess :) Dxbinthecity, We had no idea about this rule - I really appreciate you telling me this. The company had put us in this apartment hotel for 3 months. My husband will speak to the company about this rule affecting sponsorship. Thanks again

Angelina - he's my husband i.e we're married! In NZ we tend to use the term 'partner', just a term really :) That's great - wouldn't want anyone to spend 3 months in jail :) Hahaha! Yeah, that wouldn't be too fun. We read up all the 'rules and regulations' before moving here. Lots to learn :)

Hey all :) My partner has recently gotten a job here and we've just arrived last night (We're from New Zealand). We don't know a single person living in Dubai so it's going to be one of those 'start from scratch' thing when it comes to meeting people, finding shops, etc! I'm currently not working and will be looking for work in a week or two (structural engineer), fingers crossed! We are staying in Grand Millenium Dubai for 3 months - I was just wanting to know if there are any other women out there in my shoes or living in this hotel, who's keen to have a cup a tea, swim, shop, in the daytime..... or, if there are any 'daytime' events happening in the next few weeks - maybe show me which page to go to look for things like that? I've never 'stayed at home' before ... I've always been working, haha, so this is going to be quite different! WIll need to start looking at good places to do grocery shopping - anyone knows a good chinese grocery store in the area? edited by ashesc on 19/04/2012
