Has anyone recently applied for a US visa on-line and how long did it take? Do you have to go the US Embassy for an interview or is the whole process on-line now? Would be grateful for any comments.

Thank you. American Airlines will not fly pets to the UK cargo or otherwise so think it will be KLM via Amsterdam.

Thanks will check with American Airlines. Some airlines do allow in the cabin, KLM, Swiss Air and Lufthansa. The problem I am having is that many airlines do not like to carry snub-nosed pets such as persian cats, pug dogs etc. as they may have breathing problems with the air pressure.

When I lived in Dubai I was buying a very expensive lingerie set and the cashier (male) sneezed over them and was just about to wipe his nose before putting said items in a bag. Needless to say I decided not to make the purchase!!!!!

I live in Muscat. I understand it is difficult to get places at The British School. If you did secure a place and do not drive you will need to look for accommodation in the MQ area (Madinat Qaboos). Taxis are not a great option here because of the terrible driving. Shopping, there are not the numerous malls that you have in Dubai which personally I enjoy. There is Al Fair Supermarket in the MQ area which is similar to Spinney's in Dubai. Cluttons and Hamptons are two real estate agencies you might want to contact in Muscat. It is a much nicer place to live than Dubai in my opinion.

Yes he can obtain a visa for the UAE at the border but sometimes it depends on the category of his employment and he may need to get an NOC letter from his employer.

The Pet Sitting Business is rife with unqualified people who do it illegally and with no insurance. The same for mobile hairdressers, reflexology etc. I used to have a pet sitting business with a license and I got fed up wiith having to compete with people who did not have a license and know there were quite a few incidents of theft as well as inappropriate use of a clients home while they were on vacation so be warned. edited by Azaiba on 09/08/2011

I agree with chizz. I cancelled my visa when I moved to Oman. I was here for almost 2 years before I brought my car up to Dubai to de-register and get export plates for Oman. I was just given an export certificate and plates. Didn't have a WOF. If in doubt get one of the companies that do the service on your behalf which is what I did. We went to the RTA near the Al Gharhoud Bridge and I was in and out in 10 minutes. Worth the Dhs 200. If you do a search in here there are a number of companies who can help you.

When I lived in Dubai I used to pick up a salad sandwich most days on the way to work. Every single time I would be asked if I wanted it heated in the microwave. It drove me nuts but I repeatedly said you don't heat this type of sandwich and one day I imploded and had to find a new place to buy my sandwich so I sympathize with the OP!

I thought the wedding was fabulous but agree with the comments about the bodice of both dresses not being fitted to flatter. Sarah Burton, the designer made the same mistake with the design of the dress for another high profile wedding. http://royalweddings.hellomagazine.com/prince-william-and-kate-middleton/galeria/20110307565/kate-middleton/wedding-dress/sarah-burton/1/2/

...........and a friend of mine getting her UAE driving license -she never drove a car but gave the traffic police her British provisional driving license .They did not know the meaning of provisional. Shaks - do we know each other because I did this? I had almost clinched getting my Sharjah license from the Head of Traffic Police when he took a phone call and was about to take my provisional UK license out of the plastic holder so flicked a couple of buttons open on my shirt-dress to distract him and voila I had my Sharjah license!!!!! edited by Azaiba on 28/04/2011 edited by Azaiba on 28/04/2011

In reply to desertprincess - Yes!!! I find a lot of people very, very sad constantly moaning and not able to solve the most simple issues/ problems, and cannot bear people who come to Dubai and want for example to have UK novelty nights etc. I remember when the Rose and Crown near the Intercontinental wanted to start a quiz night and there was almost a rebellion as no-one was remotely interested! Particularly as it was largely frequented by the very hard working offshore boys who did not need their drinking time interrupted by a quiz!!! Why leave the UK if you need to remind yourself constantly of the place? Just wondering... do any of you old timers get annoyed with newer expats constantly moaning about this, that or the other? edited by Azaiba on 26/04/2011 edited by Azaiba on 26/04/2011

I arrived January 1976. I lived in Sharjah and commuted to Al Nasr Square to work for Cluttons. In the summer it was not unusual to go without electicity for 10 hour stretches. I used to go to the Sharjah Carlton in Al Khan at lunch time and sleep under a beach umbrella. It was the best kept secret Dubai and the other Emirates and there was not the snootiness between expats that you get now. I am going to probably annoy a lot of people by saying most expats who are in Dubai now would not have stayed the course in the 70's. There were no shops to speak off and you normally did a huge shop for clothes etc when you were on annual leave. You even had to cut out the lables from any Marks and Spencer items you bought as they were banned here as were Revlon cosmetics, Coca-Cola and Cadbury's chocolates! The customs used to think me quite odd when I arrived back from the UK with English cucumbers and Cheddar Cheese! I used to use Fairy Washing Up Liquid to wash my dishes, me in the shower, my hair, my car and clothes. If you heard that KM Brothers Supermaket had a shipment you drove very quickly to stock up on anything you could get your hands on. There was not even the luxery of fresh milk just powdered and I used to have to boil my drinking water and filter it through a stoneware filter. It was hard at times but everyone I met was incredibly friendly and I made a lot of local friends who are still my close friends today. Again, something that doesn't happen very much now.

Living in Oman I am biased, The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat. Restrained elegance and devoted reverance. Everyone who visits Oman should take the time to visit.
