I think I must have looked at between 8 or 9 nurseries. You kind of just get a feel for the nursery once your there. Have to say I never even thought of asking anyone about qualifications or first aid as I assumed that they all would be. For me I wanted somewhere that was clean, looked fun and that the teachers at least looked happy in their jobs. I remember going to one nursery which I actually quite liked. The headmistress was showing us their their sleep room saying that an assistant was always in the room and no child was ever left asleep in the room on their own blah blah blah. Upon opening the door was a little girl asleep to the world and no assistant in sight! Headmistress was not happy as she saw the look on my face. For me as I saw that incident for some reason put me off the nursery completely.

Good on you. I never went out with DD until she was about 3 months old. The Westin have a fab brunch on a Friday with entertainment etc. The brunch choice is vast!

You should get Time Out for Kids as at the back they list I think all if not the majority of nurseries, primary and secondary schools in Dubai. Getting a place for FS2/KG2 is luck of the draw.

Suzq, Not that I have inside information or anything but one of the mums who inquired about Star on Monday was told to call again in May once they had gone through their list to see who was coming for assessments or not. People come and go all the time here. Have you looked at Jumeriah Primary School. Its not as small as the others but apparently its nice. We were planning to leave at the beginning of this year but hey two weeks in and I'm looking for a new place to rent!

I heard many a maid story. When hubby suggested we get one I went to the uniform shop and bought a nice little blue number and then to Satwa for a black long-haired wig. ;) Seems to work for him. lol

I bath my DS's in vodka. They love it, and so do I as they sleep like logs after a nice long soak;-) Take it you drink the vodka to clear the bath out as well!

Christeen, It will come promise but you yourself still have to want to give up. I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was nearly 10 weeks gone. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I was in shock and had a cig to calm myself down. All I do remember was the first time I went for a scan and saw that blob I never touched a cig again. The smell of cigarette smoke made my stomach churn. Good luck and just think of what is growing inside of you. Whatever you put in your mouth goes in theirs.

Don't think anything a child can do will ever shock me since an incident back home a few years ago. A child of no more than 8 came up to me really confidently and asked, after sultry taking a puff on his cigarette, if he could perform a s*xual act on me that I can not repeat on here. After I came out of stunned silence and politely declined his offer he just shrugged, took another puff on his cig, told me I didn't know what I was missing out on and then casualy walked away.....?! :-O edited by KaceyC on 11/01/2011 Are you sure it was a child and not a child like looking midget!

I'm with the other ladies on this. Bring her over if you can deal with all the paperwork. You can get an agency maid part time from around 25AED per hour. Some I know have a minimum 4 hours requirement. I'm sure if you decide to go down the agency maid route there are ladies here who can help you.

we are just friends and though I'd be disappointed if he suddenly vanished, i would not be devastated. its just that feeling sneaking under my skin that this could turn into something more than we have bargained for. if it does, after several years spent with one man, the idea of another man touching me just scares the sht out of me :) There is an old saying "to get over one you have to get under one"!!!

Oh dear....what a dilemma! Is Nursery foundation of the same standard as School foundation education? I have heard that kids that do foundation at nursery lag behind when they go to proper school?! The answer to that question should be No it should be the same standard. When I was viewing Star International I asked the same exact question to the headmaster. His reply was "the standard should be the same. The big problem would be if we didn't accept a place in FS1 then it would be a lot harder to get a place in FS2". Star for example if I remember correctly have 4 FS1 classes and 4 FS2 classes. Assuming all FS1 kids return to the same school for FS2 the following year then there will be no extra spaces for newcomers.

Yasmine, I'm a working mum and went back to work when she was 6 months. I went from thinking nursery to nanny to nursery to nanny. I think she was around 4 months old I hired a full time live out nanny. Nanny came to me at 7:30am and finished at 6:00pm and she worked 5 days a week. I personally felt she was just a bit too young for nursery. DD started nursery at 17months old and did 3 days a week 8 til 3 and two days at home with the nanny which for me I felt was a happy balance. Have to say it is completely true the first six months of DD starting nursery she was constantly ill with something. I have a friend who even though they have live in maid/nanny chooses to put them their child into nursery at 6 months. Not sure where you live but there are a few nurseries around which cater for the working parents. Blossom is one of them as that is where DD is now. They give you the option of early drop offs and late pick ups and I think is only closed 4 weeks of the year. Good luck on whatever you choose to do. x edited by Babyrat on 11/01/2011

Sorry can't help as I'm in the same boat as you. Had DD on Kings wait list for 18months for FS1 Sept 2011 and she still has no chance of getting in. I was so convinced she would get in. Seriously you have to put register your kids before they are even conceived! Have a look at Safa and Horizon. Small schools but just that bit too far for me to travel.

Hayya Club have tennis courts. There are public tennis courts at Safa Park but its quite expensive to hire. Have a look on facebook there is a club called DuetTennis where they hold regular tennis sessions but you just can't book a tennis court to play with your own friends. At the moment I play at Atlantis, you can't hire the courts but they do lessons and have ladies clinics on Monday and Wednesday morning. Jumeriah Beach Hotel has a good tennis club but its expensive to join but once you do join you can hire courts and join their tennis league. Hope that helps.

Hope you have your alcohol licence in place now that you have posted your number!!!! lol. Kensington is about 2 years old now. I had a look at it when it first opened. The rooms are tiny with quite big size classes but that was 2 years ago so they may have made the class sizes smaller now. Have a look at Blossom and Rising Star both good nurseries. Take it that you have looked at Raffles as that is basically on your door step. Welcome to Dubai!

I went in December with family who had come over to stay for Christmas. No Ladies day but they do a family day on a Monday. Shows were good, funfair which the kids really enjoyed is expensive one token = 5AED and most rides were at least 2 tokens. My brother and his family loved it. If you have never been I suppose its a nice evening out. We got there for 5:30pm but I think it opens at 4.00pm. The entrance fee is 10AED but then you have to pay for everything else once you are inside.

Blossoms charge 9700AED for 3 days a week from 8 til 3. I could be wrong but I think it is only Raffles which charge you the full 5 days a week regardless of how many days you take your child in. edited by Babyrat on 10/01/2011

I should hire someone who lives in Liwa Heights or next to have an eye on the balconies above ours. Or possibly sit and wait on one of the banks on the other side with binoculars.....;) We are living in Green Lakes Towers. I mean was a smoker for some years but I never have thrown cigarettes out of a car or balcony... As a smoker I didn't liked cigarettes lying around on the ground... Here they are everywhere.. no one seem to care...sad! Was going to look around JLT this weekend for a flat shall avoid your building!

OP pays more than the going rate. Your maid would have known that transport to where she needs to go at weekends would be difficult yet she still choose to take the job. Why because she knows your paying more than the going rate. She has friends and if she didn't know then her friends would have told her. As someone has already mentioned your responsibility to her as a sponsor is included in the contract that you both signed. I don't think anywhere in that Contract it states extra transport allowance for weekend trips. My employer doesn't given me an extra allowance for the weekend so that I can go out and enjoy myself. I'm just grateful that I have a job and get paid on time! Does your DH get paid an extra transport allowance so he can take you guys out at the weekend? If no, then why should you pay your maid extra. Do I sound harsh thats because you give an inch and they always take a mile.

I see... I suppose there's some of that in Aus too but I've always preferred the authentic restaurants that cater less to western tastebuds! Also... CHIPS AND CURRY?! Wow. That's a new one! Best Chinese in Dubai is Lan Kwai Fong which is near Lamcy Plaza. Owned and run by a Hong Kong Chinese. They do the most amazing Peking Duck.

Just in case you change your mind about joining a gym I can recommend Hamit from Fitness First in IBM. I've trained with him pre and post birth. He helped with my diet and the weight loss was gradual. His firm and knows just how far you should be pushed. I trained with him once or twice a week and when I had time would go to the gym and do a class.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you define UK Chinese? How does it differ from "normal" Chinese? Laced with MSG - UK Chinese = Chips and Curry, Sweet and Sour Pork Balls!

In the past we have had gel used inside the house and spray for outside. Had an under 1 year old at the time and they recommended that we leave the villa for 24 hours which we did. Came back next day and it was all fine. No smell from gel at all. The gel from what I gather should be orderless.
