I used to go to Mezyad checkpoint (last time was about a year ago though, maybe google 'Mezyad' to get more up to date reports), which is just the other side of Al Ain. It was straightforward - you'll get an exit stamp on the UAE side and pay a small fee (35 dhs?), then we walked across to the Oman entry point...this was because we didn't have proper Omani car insurance to drive across but it's not far and we got offered lifts. On the Omani side you fill in a card, tell them it's a visa run and pay the fee which last time was 20 rials (200 dhs) by credit card. If accompanied by someone who has a residence visa, they don't need to pay or get stamped if I remember. You get an entry and exit stamp, then head back to the UAE side. First to the immigration office on the right, then through customs, then you're done. I may have forgotten a step but you will pointed in the right direction, just hold on to any paper slips given to you. Depending on how busy it is, the whole thing took around 40 mins plus the drive there and back. I think we worked out that Mezyad was the easiest one for us from AD but you could also do it during a weekend away in Fujairah (Kalba checkpoint, same procedure as above but a longer walk). Should point out that I have a UK passport so get a free visa on arrival in the UAE, might be different depending on your nationality.

I think it's some version of the Lorem Ipsum filler text that web designers use to approximate real text when designing a page. Looks like the editor uploading the content hadn't had their coffee this morning.

I just want to sound a note of caution here as it sounds like some doctors either don't fully understand this new type of testing or (sorry to sound cynical) are even selling it incorrectly perhaps as a money spinner. This testing cannot be considered fully diagnostic. It is still under development and accuracy of testing so far only relates to relatively small sample sizes of high-risk mothers. Anyone considering this test might want to read section C ('Maternal cfDNA screening') in the latest position statement from the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis online [url=http://ispdhome.org/public/news/2013/PositionStatementAneuploidy4apr2013.pdf'>here[/url'> . Personally I can completely understand the wish to avoid invasive testing but it still holds that only CVS or amnio is fully diagnostic. If you got a positive result for one of the trisomies from the blood test, you would still be advised to confirm this via invasive testing. If it is negative and you are comfortable with the accuracy levels of your results, then no need to do any further testing.

I have the Avent single electric, I wish I'd had a double though as LO had problems latching so I was pumping round the clock for the first five weeks and it seemed like one long pump/feed/sterilize/pump mission. The Avent is still working OK after 6 months although I only use it occasionally now but the charger stopped working after 3 months so I can only use it with the battery pack. I think I would go for the Medela next time around. I agree it's worth getting the best you can afford to save yourself time and hassle in the long run.

There is alot of toxins in the vaccines, and that is a fact. If you are referring to thimerosal, the mecury related preservative, please note this from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: "Which childhood vaccines do not contain thimerosal? Today, with the exception of some influenza vaccine, [b'>none[/b'> of the vaccines used to protect preschool children against 14 infectious diseases contain thimerosal as a preservative. "

Those are two very different professions! To get you thinking about what you really want to do, you can take a Briggs-Meyers personality test (a quick one here: [url=http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp'>link[/url'>) and you'll fit into one of 16 personality types so you can then find lists of careers which are suited to that personality. Not too serious but just something to help you think about your strengths and weaknesses. Teaching particularly is not so well paid and I think it is something you need to have an aptitude and passion for.

I was in a similar situation but not so critical for me as my DH is American. I posted about it in more detail here: [url=http://www.expatwoman.com/abudhabi/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=196646'>link[/url'> But in your case, I think that as BEDH says you may have grounds to appeal to the UK Home Office. You probably need to contact UKBA to start with. If you go down the other route as discussed in the old thread, I was told it would take around 6 months (!) but I haven't actually applied yet so don't have any more details on that. You can find all the info for applying on the UKBA website. Good luck. Shame that this is not more widely known, I wasn't even aware that I was 'by descent' either, all my family are English and the law was changed after I was born overseas.

I think they're fine...I went to the Al Rowdah one with LO for something else (Doc I saw was nice) and they assumed I'd come for vaccinations so I suspect that they do loads of them. I got some 'Omol' brand paracetamol drops in case of fever but never needed to use them. I'm going back to do LO's 6 mo vaccs there since the German Centre appears to be 'under reconstruction' at the mo (!) - sorry to go OT but does anyone happen to know if Dr Jadwiga is working somewhere else now or will be back there eventually? We liked her! ETA - also just found out Dr Stiles is not working at Al Noor anymore! edited by Beany on 03/04/2013

It seems like they're deliberately throttling speeds and it's getting on my nerves. It's almost 2 months now. I don't pay big money for **** service. Mine (internet, phone and TV) have all been pretty flaky since before this whole cable/hacking disruption thing. I've given up calling the call centre tbh...half the time when I call they can't check anything as their own systems are down which does not inspire much confidence!

Never really bothered to look here but I ordered some large tubs of it online from Swanson's Vitamins - arrived quickly and had no problems with customs. For milk supply, if you have tried all the herbal remedies (fenugreek etc) then you might want to look into taking domperidone (sold as Motilium - google it, it's available over the counter here). It helped me keep my supply going. I find eating a decent amount of protein at each meal and getting enough sleep (okay, that one is the difficult part!) is also important. Thanks Beany. It specifically asked for Brewers Yeast so not sure if I can use other kinds of yeast. Anyways, I will try and order through souq.com. How long did it take for yours to arrive? I think it was not more than 10 days from ordering to arriving (this is coming from the US direct from Swanson's - this stuff: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swanson-premium-pure-brewers-yeast-32-oz-908-grams-pwdr ...it's a huge tub!). Like I said, I didn't check the shops here as I was ordering other stuff from them anyway, but it might be worth giving Holland and Barretts or other health food shops a quick call if you're in a hurry.

Maybe some music cd's and audiobooks, if you have an idea of her tastes. My mum used to listen to both, helps to take your mind away from the present I guess. She liked uplifting music like soul.

Hope this isn't too late but we had a picnic last weekend at Yas Gateway Park, very nice lawn with trees for shade - I think there were some benches around but we took a blanket and sat on the grass. There were only two other families there, loads of space for a game of football or whatever. Have a look on google maps or the satellite view as I am very bad at directions but it was not far from Ikea. It has a couple of tennis courts at one end, I think it was signposted too.

Back home in Russia every woman wears high heels everywhere everytime. If you are not on high heels you feel yourself underdressed and ugly... My mother didn't even have any flats before she turned 45. She even managed to hike down the Grand Canyon on heels :)) And every American we met told her she had wrong shoes :)))) So ridiculous... I hate high heels and it was a daily torture back home. I was so happy in Germany, where nobody wears them! I still wear them to a restaurant, theater etc, but shopping or playground...NO WAY! LOL, after seeing my poor old mum's bunion-y feet from squeezing into daft pointy heels in the 60's, 70's and 80's, I pretty much go barefoot or wear flipflops whenever possible!

No, please don't worry, it really is nothing! Yes a little awkward and obviously not the most enjoyable moment of your day but it's just a small discomfort for a minute or so and then all done. Absolutely nothing to dread, you'll see. It's a good reminder for all of us to get it done regularly.

This one?: [url=http://www.expatwoman.com/abudhabi/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=200645'>link[/url'> I used 'Shantaram' as the search term, as it always gets a mention as a good read! That's a great suggestion if you haven't already read it btw, I couldn't put it down the first time I read it.

Ick! From what I have read, their eggs are very sticky and can adhere to anything so I would be very careful about putting your handbag, jacket, etc on any surface other than the desk or coat hook. I am very careful in hotel rooms and so on here when placing luggage or clothes down. To be extra careful, you might want to leave your work shoes outside your door and not bring them in the house, or wipe them with alcohol on the soles before you go into the house. I would also demand a new chair just in case, I think they could easily find their way into any small cracks. I don't know why everyone else is relaxed, they are horrid things and an absolute b*gger to get rid off! Pest control should be coming in on a more regular basis by the sounds of it.

I've gone poo for over a year now and must say, the only hair fall visible are my dogs :) Ecochic, could you explain this first part a little more? Or is it just me that's confused :) Marroosh, I have been using the Phyto Paris Huile d'Ales on my hair lately too (contains a castor oil derivative plus some herbal oils), it is good stuff.

just curious here; but have you ladies noticed weight gain and do you also eat wheat and sugar? edited by Ayzzy on 12/03/2013 For me it's a big ol' yes to weight gain although it's mostly post-baby weight, but I am not shifting it very easily. I've stopped eating bread lately although I guess I still have wheat sometimes in other foods. Sugar as well through other foods (i.e not directly in tea or coffee etc. but I'm not very careful about checking other foods like yoghurts to be honest). Why, what do you think might be going on....?

Tara, I got the H2O Pure Blue one recently, there is a list of stockists on their [url=http://www.h2opureblue.com/'>website[/url'>. I feel like it's helping with the texture although I still see a lot of hair fall (but I've only been using it a couple of months and I suspect the hair fall is mostly hormonal in my case). I am quite close to having all mine cut off, it's been nothing but a mess lately!

It's a very sensible question! I tend to cover over sleeveless tops with a cardi or wrap when out and don't wear anything revealing much chest or legs, the only exception might be if I was at a hotel and most guests were Western. Especially during Ramadan it is important to dress modestly. You'll find AD is more conservative than Dubai on the whole, although the only person I know here who got a telling off from the police was a man (for wearing too short shorts!). It is probably wise to cover up anyway as the sun is so strong here, and the aircon inside shops is quite fierce. Hope you have an easy move and are enjoying the rain showers in Singapore, you won't see many once you're here:)

also calendula oil. @beany: where do you buy that oil? Most of mine has come from Europe via family (Weleda stuff seems to be cheaper over there!) but I have seen it in lots of the big pharmacies here. There is a whole Weleda Calendula range for babies.

Lou, I'd dyed my hair quite a dark reddish-brown (it's naturally dark blonde) and it looked awful! This is the stuff: http://www.boots.com/en/Colour-B4-Hair-colour-remover-extra-strength_1000976/ I am pretty sure it didn't have bleach although I don't really understand how it works!

I had a similar disaster before and used a home product called ColourB4, it somehow takes your hair back to the colour before you tried to dye it. It worked first time for me! I got it from Boots but this was in England - maybe try calling the bigger Boots branches here, they might have it.

The Rotana is fine, I've also stayed at the Danat and I remember seeing a lot of families there, they have a large pool and big garden area to play in. It's a slightly older hotel but not bad at all. I think you might mean Green Mubazzarah at the base of Jebel Hafeet?

Twins, how exciting! I think in AD you'd be advised to register at the Corniche hospital (Mina Rd area, near the old Sheraton hotel) as it's the govt dedicated maternity hospital and is said to have more experienced staff and a larger NICU. Other main option is the new Al Noor on Airport Rd, which is a private hospital with maternity ward and small NICU (I had my baby there and it was fine but it was a single full term delivery). I don't know much about Dubai hospitals. Good luck!

I have one too (and it's cream coloured..not sure what I was thinking there) - we took it and a couple of other ones into a dry cleaners, it came back as good new and smelling great and it really didn't cost very much. So maybe ask around at a couple of the larger dry cleaners and a get a price before you get the rubber gloves out.

I haven't been there before, other than a brief layover in NYC - sorry to hijack the post, but to Beebers, may I ask why you wouldn't be keen on going back to California? That's where we'll be going, probably somewhere in San Francisco Bay area.

Kiwispiers and lou86, I also have exactly the same stats as you, also post-baby and breastfeeding. Was so gutted yesterday, my old scales at home had been reading 62kg but the undoubtedly more accurate scales at the doctor's said 65kg! Argh!! Gave me some extra motivation at least. I'm trying primarily to cut down on carbs as they are my downfall, and cut out all junk, without doing anything too drastic. Good luck ladies, keep at it! On another note, can anyone recommend a fitness dvd, ideally with short routines (20 - 30 mins) - not the Insanity one, I had a look at that and I think it would destroy me! There's so many out there. Would like to get a crosstrainer or similar machine to use at home but don't want to spend too much at the moment.

Hi KittyKat72, sorry to hear about your loss, this must be a difficult time of year for you. I'm going to try to explain the situation as I found out about it recently - bear with me, it's confusing... I am first generation British by Descent (both my parents are/were British and born in the UK). I was born in the UAE and I recently had a baby in the UAE although I have spent the majority of my life in the UK. My husband is not British. Under the BNA law of 1981, I can apply for my son’s nationality to be registered under section 3 or section 5. Applying under section 3 can be done right away (but it might take a minimum of 6 months to get the application approved!) by completing a form MN1, see here: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/britishcitizenship/applying/applicationtypes/childregisteringasbritishcitizen/completingtheform/ and sending a lot of original supporting docs plus 500 quid to the UK Border Agency. But my son will not then be able to pass the nationality on directly to his future kids as he is second generation BbD. Applying under section 5 can be done after your child has lived in the UK for 3 years but before he turns 18 (i.e. must be in process when he turns 15 at the latest). If done this way, his future kids can receive UK nationality directly. I’m not clear on how I could take my baby back to the UK for those 3 years, I guess under some kind of dependent's visa. Your situation is a bit different as you are both Brits (unless you have dual nationality) so if you’re living in the UAE I think you’d have to go for the section 3 option as you’d need the nationality and passport to get baby on one of your residence visas. Also don’t know how you’re supposed to take him back to the UK for 3 years if you wanted to go for the section 5 option as he wouldn’t have a passport! My baby has his dad’s nationality. Not sure if you can get the status transferred from section 3 to section 5. I do remember you can ask for your case to be considered by the Home Office in special circumstances but obviously that’s not very secure. Anyway, well done for thinking this through beforehand - I didn’t even know I was considered British by Descent until I trotted along to the Embassy to register my baby’s birth only to find I couldn’t. Always thought I was proper British! The embassy didn’t give me any advice, just the website and phone number of the UKBA, who are also not spectacularly helpful. You may even want to consult a specialist law firm. But of course you're right, having the baby in the UK would get rid of all these issues! Let me know if I can explain anything further.
