Ain Khalid is a LONG way from the Science and Tech Park so BHAR would be much better location wise. The Irish owned Apple Tree nursery which is very close to BHAR, I would throughly recommend. For the 4 year old it may be really tough to get a place if you wait till September but the new Doha College campus is taking applications now which you can download online. edited by BEDH on 05/04/2013

I heard about the ban too. However, I got my approval for a maid from the philipines yesterday :) Approval to sponsor a Fillipina already in Doha or actual work visa to bring a named Fillipino person from outside of Doha ?

Based on pupils I know who attend , Doha British School seems more flexible with admission of who children may require extra support . Whether they provide it , I don't know. edited by BEDH on 27/03/2013

Ravi the travelling tailor is great for alterations and copies especially for women as he is fine with measuring you. He charges 30QR per hour .I had him alter some curtains , take in and hem dresses , shorten my husbands suit trousers and make cushion covers. His no is 66170430 . He brings everything with him . I have also used Himayla Ladies tailors in Granda Souk tailors to make clothes but only direct copies.

I would urge anyone with school aged children to take into serious account the possibility they could be two or more years on a wait list before even starting some of the more desirable schools in Doha. Unfortunately having the pick of pupils these schools are unlikely to select children whose learning styles may be a challenge .

I'm sure I have mentioned this before .A family of five I know were to relocate to Qatar but the company would not sponsor their eldest as she was born in England before they were married .Without an RP she could not attend school here under any circumstances. I remember we had to give birth certificates and marriage certificate in order to get sponsored . Perhaps it differs from company to company but worth checking it out . It may be even if you do eventually marry or marry after your child is born he/she will not be eligible to be sponsored . edited by BEDH on 14/03/2013 edited by BEDH on 14/03/2013

http://www.qatarliving.com/node/3067876 Here is a link to a post about teaching at Newton Lagoon on QL . On TES the actual school names cannot be mentioned but it isn't hard to decipher that there is quite a lot of teachers who haven't found it a great place to work and the staff turnover to be high. edited by BEDH on 14/03/2013

It would be interesting to do a basic item price comparison for the supermarkets in Qatar . The local paper in Bahrain did this weekly with varing items . Megamart always stings my wallet especially our neighbourhood express as they have less local produce on sale. I will never forget accidently paying £9 for a cabbage . My children now get the 27 QR tiny potted 6 pack of Thomas the tank engine yogurts ( marked up as £1 on the label ) refilled with plain local yoghurt.

Fold em and bag em and take them back on the plane . My mother and mother in law did the same thing but both ( flying Emirates and Qatar respectively ) took them back with them no trouble . The largest was 16ft by 12ft but folded to a grain sack size . We plastic wrapped them and put them in the hold. It is amazing how the generous weight limits from this end can be stretched . edited by BEDH on 03/03/2013

There are proper nanny jobs to be had in the Middle East. I know quite a few ladies work for weathly and often royal families .Normally they will be recruited through agencies in the UK and trained either as teachers or Norland nannies . They may lead a team of house help , tutor when the family travels or be assigned to a child with particular needs. It is likely the job would be live in and could involve travel that would be hard on a marriage.

I once paid 10 QR each for filling a load of balloons for a party the following day . They not only deflated overnight but were each pulled down and popped by my dogs . A cheap way to fake helium is stick regular balloons on the ceiling with blu-tac .Of course you then need a ladder.

Thank you, that link is very useful. I am currently in Dubai and my baby is due a vaccine at 9 months and my toddler due one at 36 months, neither of which are on this list. The one at 9 months is Hep B, so I will probably have that one when I travel. When I register at a new place in Qatar, do you know if they will then update the immunization records from what I already have on the kids cards? Thanks :) I was given a new card and the old one stapled to it. We only came from Bahrain so my eldest so had been given regional immunizations like Rotavirus but not varicella and double dose of MMR . They were due some jabs when last in the UK but the NHS doctor said it was better to stay on the country of residence schedule and we just caught up when we got back to Doha.

You will be able to vaccinate at a private hospital or clinic (costly ) or at the central public health vaccination clinic (nominal charge ) without an RP. Do be aware Qatar has a different schedule and immunizations and you may need to enter into a catch up programme. The vaccinations you are due may not be on the Qatar schedule . Look at the Supreme Health Councils website for info. https://www.sch.gov.qa/NIP/En/immsche.jsp

Al Messilah has a two rows of Terraced houses at the entrance which each have rear gardens .The two beds are very small like a London terrace and are 10,000 . Bigger 3 bed terrace ( with study ) are 13,000. The villas are now going for as much 16 - 20 K depending on size . You really pay for trees !!

How long does it take to get to the Doha Golf Club from Y Village? Thanks! Golfers would be best living on the course side of Doha . A second course will eventually open at Education City a little bit closer to Y Village. I don't live there or know the exact commuting times but to me Y -Village seems way out of town. On a Friday morning you may be able to zoom anywhere quickly but other times the traffic must take its toll for residents trying to get downtown or to westbay.

A family I know whose children are both school age have a live in Nepali driver/housekeeper as opposed to a nanny/housekeeper . They sponsor him just as you would a maid. He drives exclusively for the family and does the housework and garden. He also cooks . It might be an option.

BEDH, My kids are in DESS dubai also And we are moving to Doha by the summer. Would you please ask your friend how she was able to get direct transfer from DESS dubai to DESS Doha.? We are Americans and Dess Doha wouldn't even accept my kids' applications. I have a year 5 and year1. Thanks Her DH has been working here for 2.5 years whilst she has been staying on in Dubai. I think their son has been on the wait list all that time.

To finish the tale , we all got photographic chipped health cards issued at Hamad hospital today ! So it seems a new system is in place or is at least today . a) Register at the nearest PHC taking new applications . You need a copy of your RP or copy of passport for kids and a electricity bill b) Go to Hamad hospital outpatients with the number for each applicant given by the PHC, 100 QR per applicant and a blue backed photograph and your card is issued on the spot. edited by BEDH on 06/02/2013

So we all arrived at Mesiameer at 9am and were told we could apply there and fill the form for all the family and housemaid together but would need to come back tomorrow at 7am to get it processed as all numbers were taken .I just stood at the reception looking forlorn and the very nice processor did it . She spoke excellent English and was very helpful. She loaded our details into a PC and wrote numbers onto the copies of our ID and took the electric bill. BUT this is not the end . We now have to go to Hamad OP with the papers with numbers we have been given ,100 QR each and our photos . I think we are in the system now . Yay !

Another Doha Day! Off topic, but intrigued to know where wholesale market actually is. I'd like to check it out, I assume you buy in bulk but it's much cheaper? And it must still be open in the afternoon? Heading toward c-ring on Salwa road I take the right turn between Wholesale market street junction and Qatar decoration junction . This puts you on a road in the middle of the garden centres and fruit and vege shops. Drive around and you'll find a covered and semi open market plus the fish market. Some of it but not all of it is open in the afternoons. I wouldn't trek across town every week to shop but definately cheaper and fresher.

Annoyingly it is now required to have transcripts as well as the degree certificate attested . Qatar would like to become a world leader in higher education and have quite strict standards. My husband had to provide UK university transcripts when we came in 2011.Recently I though about applying for a teaching job but as my first degree is from NZ and I saw the complexity of the process for attestation , I gave up !

Great IndyGal - I'll try there first and report back. For us the Hamad card will only be a back up but for our helper it's access to all heathcare. If she needs a HC it's going to be in my and her best interest that it is as close as possible. If we were away , a taxi to Al Daayen is going to cost her loads.

They gave me a map and its about 20 km from Qatar university . Cards are no longer issued at the public hopitals and definately not online.

I think with so many applications schools are probably seeing those who are already in Doha with resisdents permits first. The Supreme Education Council has a ruling that pupils cannot start without one and since so much changes with employment etc , it must be in the schools best interest. Some , but increasingly less companies have ways into schools but everywhere we asked aside from ASD said this was not applicable any longer . Still I think the petroleum companies have a bit of weight.

Hi BEDH do you mind if I ask whether your child is attending the assessment for pre-school or reception. I keep getting told that I will know by the end of the month if my son is asked to attend an assessment however it seems like the emails have already been sent out? Did you receive yours a while back? Mine is Pre-School and we heard last week and I know of one Reception applicant who has been scheduled .I've heard they don't say no until all the places have been confirmed . We are covering our bases ( I hope ) and have four of these "assessments" scheduled at different schools.I have totally bought into the Doha school panic.

When we arrived summer of 2011 I was 36 weeks pregnant and definitely not willing to do the legwork but neither I found were the agents .I was ok with paying but not ok with being lead up the garden path. Some compounds will not let any agents in regardless of whether commission is paid or not. We were told compounds were full or only for companies but when we approached them they had vacancies . Ask the watchmen for the managers number rather than if there is space. The manager should will who is shortly vacating , the watchmen only of empty villas.

If you have time you are much better off looking yourself . The major property owners like like Al Asmak have websites and lists in the newspaper. Agents in my experience only show property that they will get comssions for and many property owners will not do so. Nowadays many charge the tenant two. I resent paying a month or two's commission to someone when you can do the same deal easily yourself.
