The applications for DESS for Sept 2013 were accepted on 2nd -4th of January 2013 online and successful candidates have been invited for assessment in February . I think Doha College is much the same this year . edited by BEDH on 23/01/2013

Sunderland University has an academic year long PGCE course which qualifies you as a teacher in either early years , primary or secondary. The campus is in Dubai where you attend infrequent workshops. Most of the work is done on line and concurrent with a placement in a school here in Doha. Many ladies I know have gained this very useful qualification and are currently employed in schools . The course is called Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (OVERSEAS).

I have never said that Uggs are all the rage in the UK (pls check my original post for clarification). I have lived most of my life in Beirut and the fashion there is probably somewhat different to that of the UK. CHAVS as described in the entertaining posts here don't exist, we'll not to my knowledge. People that wear Burberry in Lebanon for example are usually quite well to do where as in the UK I do believe they fall into the Chav category. So therefore not only is my 12 year old daughter a chav but my younger son must be a Lebanese male Chav too!!! Of course people are entitled to their opinions but back to my original post I only ever wanted to buy Uggs for a trip to Europe to keep my feet warm. Differently nationalities class things differently. Everyone is welcome to laugh, life is too short to throw insults around, Lets just all sit back and chill!!!! Or rather pop on some Ugg boots/slippers and keep warm!!!!!!!!!!!! Any other fashion tips ladies?????? If you had stated your Lebanese fashion roots in the OP perhaps no one would have commented. There are things worn in Beirut that other nations would deem strictly for behind bedroom doors. edited by BEDH on 01/11/2012

DH grew up in Aus and he doesn't understand what the rage is about, as he used to wear them as school shoes as a kid, and he Certainly wasn't wearing them as a fashionista! Why did he wear slippers to school ?

I use them for all our water bottles as well as the children's stuff . Mothercare has its own brand for 10 QR a box. Ditto for Boots . Milton ones were in Family Foods and Megamarts but haven't seen them there for a while. The Al Messilah Pharmacy has them as well as a good range of baby and nursing stuff that you can't often find elsewhere.

Aspire security have a new set of rules and are stopping female visitors who are not wearing ankle length trousers or skirts and to the wrist long sleeves . My friend was stopped on twice. Firstly for wearing 3/4 jogging leggings and a baggy t-shirt and on the next day because her long sleeved top (over full length trousers) did not cover her bottom. edited by BEDH on 03/10/2012

There is a stipulation that the family sponsor ( most often but not always , husband ) must have 6 mths of bank statements in Qatar before he/or she can sponsor a spouse and kids . A man alone cannot sponsor a live in female housemaid so must wait till the wife/kids have their RPs. Many spouses do not work and have maids but may have had to apply several times , have very young children or shown a doctors certificate giving a reason they need help . It also depends on who the family sponsor works for and his/her income. If you have someone great it is worth the effort as there certainly isn't many surplus ladies in Qatar. When my neighbour moved to Asia , her maid had over 70 responses to her classified ad on Doha Mums. edited by BEDH on 02/10/2012

It is not an easy process at all. Qatar is notorious for its processes . Firstly before you can sponsor a maid you need to have your RP as well as your husbands which will be granted minimally one month after arrival .A law change means many families are waiting over six months for their RPs so can't sponsor a maid till after that. Then there's the rules about both parents working , nationality you can or cannot sponsor, age of the maid , etc etc Probably best to send your maid home and then get her over when everything is in place . My advise would be to use agency maids until you can get her a visa or you will just add another pounding throb to the headache of reloaction to Doha. If you need more official advise contact Futuregate (western run relocation agency in Qatar) who will put you on the right track.

It's maclaren bought at Mothercare but I'd think this would fall shy of the normal repair warranty . If I could only get a new sunshade bit or a new plastic stiffener as that is the worst damage . I think it's the being folded and heat that has made it "cook " outta shape. edited by BEDH on 19/09/2012

This news has definately sold me on heading back to the UK for the sake of my children's schooling . For me all the stories of delays to opening, make shift provisions, waiting lists , and staff disapperaring off is not worth the stress . The lack of communication to parents is a big concern.

I second the Ergo . My DS1 still fits in it comfortably and he's 15kg + and over 1 metre tall . It's soft , squashes easily into a bag and is a godsend for air travel . I've just taken my DS2 all over the place in it while on holiday in the Alps . He's a hefty boy and sitting on my back it just felt like he was giving me a cuddle . I've never owned anything else but have converted lots of friends who used other brands .

Off the top of my head you can get clothes from is GAP , Zara, M&S , Next , Mothercare , mamas and papas ,BHS , H& M , and a small selection at Toys r Us . Mothercare has a three small shops and there is also a local chain called babyshop which has baby supplies . Toys r us has prams etc too . There are several small ELC shops . I find everything more expensive and there isn't much variety . I'm in Europe now and stocking up on toys and books for my toddler boys as well as pjs ,swimwear , soft pre walker shoes , new 12-18m , sunhats and nice clothes . you can't find things like an ergo baby carriers ,or a wide selection of carseats and specialist baby kit in Doha but there is a good new/second hand classified market in Qatar through the Doha Mums group . edited by BEDH on 25/07/2012

I am shortly giving up OSN because we barely watch it . Unless you love to see football , ancient programmes and endless repeats its quite poor . My children watch BBC I-player, 4 on demand , itv etc on tv connected to computer or on the iPad . My eldest is 2 and navigates himself through you tube and finds things to watch once I've set him off on one clip . I downloaded lots of UK series - night garden , charlie & lola , peepa *** , Bob , Shaun the sheep etc + lots of Disney films . Hopefully we will get the fibre network to our compound soon and everything will stream better . I still love my British telly when I'm back in London but it is getting easier to see things than a few years ago . edited by BEDH on 24/07/2012

Our compound collects refuse twice daily so there is really no need for the sangenic bins . I had two in nappies for almost a year and in the heat prefer to have the smelly ones taken out of the house ASAP . You can get the cartridges and bins at mothercare sometimes but really not worth it IMO .

The local Aptamil isn't the same formulation in the GCC as the UK which is explained by the manufacturers as modified to suit the preferance of the local population . It's sweeter but a baby won't notice , actually my OB warned me not to use it because of sugar content but could possibly be because he was paid to promote Similac . I brought organic baby cereal back from the UK when I was weaning my youngest this year as I never saw a constant supply . Megamart usually has that sort of thing but it's pricey . Ella kitchen stuff , baby rice etc is in every supermarket . Bring nappy sacks though , I never seem to find them and hate treking cross town to hunt down one thing .

I thought I knew street names pretty well, but I haven't got a clue where these are. :\: It's behind Granada Souk and near to Al Rayyan driving school . Al Jazira Al Arabiya links the expressway with the road that Al Jeezra , new fire station & Al Ahli is on. We are in Al Messiah and it takes my DH 10 minutes to CC but this new compound is closer but on same route . Villas look to be big and about to be ... orange .

If I HAD to furnish a villa from scratch I'd do it all at The One ( landmark ) ,Kare and the hopefully soon to open Marina furniture ( lagoona mall ) and Origins which is an online company that sells lovely sofas and hotel style beds . Given a oil baron budget there's also Roche bobois and a few stylish places ( amongst the truly horrific ) on Salwa Road . There is a white company for bedlnen and most department store sell bed linen . I have also discovered a good commercial place that has nice dinnerware . I can't find any nice children's furniture for boys here ( the white company has a small selection but its white ) . Otherwise its all Disney or laminate or frankly vile .

I've two neighbours planning on sharing a maid from the agency . Since they both now used 35QR per hour agency maids it's a good deal for them . She will work 4 hours a day for each . Aware that the maid is unlikely to save much of the money herself they plan to give her extra directly as their costs are effectively halved . I have decided to try to sponsor a live in again . We were rejected because our maid we tried to bring from Bahrain was too old and from India which has some restrictions apparently . If anyone hear's of someone here already in Qatar please let me know .

I live in Al Messilah and can vouch that the central location makes it easy to get anywhere in Doha . There are plenty of children on this compound and I've noticed DBS uniforms . Although the villas and facitlities are dated , maintainence is very good and will be on your doorstep as soon as you put the phone down . It took me a while to appreciate this compound but it does feel like an oasis and very quiet and peaceful . lots of lovely people too !

As only a few compounds are marked on maps I looked on google earth and made my own map of places to call into . we were looking for at least a small garden and looking on google you can clearly see these , pool size and whether the "streets " are narrow and cluttered with cars . I did go out with a agent ( Nelson Park property ) but found my own method much , much more effective ( and cheaper ) for a compound search .

Mrsw2 It could just be complicated promising some one work before you actually arrive without really knowing their status . life for a newcomer in Doha is difficult enough . Saying that I borrowed a maid for a month when we arrived last July and arranged it through this site . Wait till you get here and ask around ( your buliding /compound, security guards , other maids , neighbours etc ) and you can find a part timer easily especially in a big compound . As long as they have the sponsors permission ladies seem to get away with working like this but it's a bit of a grey area legally .

just be careful she is actually on her husbands sponsorship ( he needs to earn a set amount before he can sponsor her and as a Nepali he unlikely to met the minimum ) . She coul just be on a tourist visa which will only last 1 month . It's not legal to hire her but your will get on more trouble caught with an overstayer and of course you can't sponser her till you are resident 6 months . When you apply for a permit to hire a maid you are also told which nationality you can hire . This is pesky if you line up someone and then are told you can only hire another nationality . once you are given a visa you can only hire the same nationality for the whole time you are here .

Have a look into airfreight . Its not as prohibitively priced as you would think. I came from Bahrain last year and brought about 1.5 metres cubed for less than 1000 rials. It was heavy stuff including furniture that we needed for new babies arrival and for our toddler plus bedding and kitchen essentials. I packed it and took it to a airfreight place at the airport and then picked it up from here . I had to pay a handling fee this end but it wasn't much.

My opinion is based in being a teacher , parent and former expat brat . Secondary schools for your 10 year old should you stay a few years would be major concern . The only proven UK curriculum secondary school is Doha college are places are in demand . If you get them in there you would be fine . Traditionally secondary aged children boarded back in the UK whilst parents did overseas assignments so secondary in the ME is a relatively new deal . Sherbourne and Parkhouse would be 2nd and 3rd on my list but I wouldn't consider anywhere else for 10 year olds if you want to stay in UK curriculum . Newton does not have a reputation of producing the genius of its namesake . It could keep your children out of your hair whilst they wait for a better option.

My 2 year old was stopped at Aspire Park two golf carts sped toward us) because he almost stood on grass sideline of the football pitch . The grass on the pitch is "special " and "only for the international team " . I was told to keep him back 3 metres as that is the rule because the special grass starts 3 metres from the painted lines . No sign or fence to be seen .

I don't know about Miele but a repair of our dyson or finding parts drew a blank . Armed with the which guide ( uk consumer website ) my husband went out searching for a new one . He couldn't find even one model that was in the top 100 in Britain . So he bought a metal commercial looking Hitachi vacuum from Lulu . It doesn't need bags which saves on searching when you run out but is possibly the ugliest cleaner I've seen . It is effective and also reverses so you can blow up a padding pool , bouncy castle or inflatable items if thats your thing :) .
