I have had two elective sections in the Middle East , 18 months apart . Although both were for medical reasons ( first I'd swine flu and the second baby was breech ) probably in the UK or elsewhere I think I'd have been encouraged to "try " a natural delivery . I think the horror stories about sections come from the emergency procedures . My sister had 20 hours of labour then a section and took weeks to recover . I never went into labour either time and found both experiences quite surreal but calm . Having a date and delivery time made me feel more in control as I was very anxious throughout especially the first pregnancy and have the lowest pain threshold on earth . The actual procedure was over quickly and although it was far from painless ( I cry at paper cuts ) recovery was quicker than I expected . I was up , admittedly hobbling to the bathroom ,the same day . I worried about managing my toddler tjhe 2nd time but I did ! We just took things slowly and living in a bungalow helped massively . I've been accused of cheating , being lazy and not been properly fulfilled as a woman but at the end of the day I've two heathly children and a teeny scar . Things could be worse .

Just to add if you use a live out maid agency the same lady doesn't come every time . This means , from my experience you really have to be in to supervise and not in anyway good child minding should you need someone to watch them . The non legal route is to employ a part or full timer on soemone else's sponsorship . But you are then faced with possible fines and the maid can just take off at no notice . As you can probably tell this whole business has me really peeved .

We have been here almost a year and I have still not been able to employ a housemaid . I arrived and gave birth to a second child three weeks afterwards . we were not able to bring our maid with us as she was rejected on nationality . I tried to sponsor another resident maid and was rejected as I don't work . I have stated that I will work ( teacher ) when I can employ a maid - no luck . my husband works in senior role for a government organization and colleagues have brought or employed maids without issue . I am in a compound where non working woman employ maids of the same nationality of our orginial maid and have no children living with them . I don't get it .

We used GAC freighters from Bahrain to Qatar and paid no extra duty or customs. The unpackers at this end were excellent . Some boxes were opened by customs and this was noted by the handlers . London to Bahrain back in 2008 took ten weeks on account of Ramadan holding up operations in Dubai ( where it docked first ) and then at the final destination . I have heard Ramdan also impacts customs here in Qatar .

Unless you plan to move to furnished accomadation I'd recommend bringing all you can . Moving here in itself is so stressful and the last thing you wany is the extra hassle of sourcing furniture . We had a company allowance of 120,000 for buying furniture when we moved to the ME ( not even in rip off Qatar ) and it went nowhere AND we brought a 40ft container from London . I have only bought a few things here, mostly used items for my children . What isn't absolute **** in the shops is so expensive .

Poor little souls :-( I can't understand they didn't have the regulations in place that forced other Doha nurseries to make changes . http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/184083-strict-new-rules-for-nurseries.html

I know people who have moved to Qatar from Dubai and long to return and a few others who enjoy Qatar as it reminds them of the Dubai of old . Personally if my husband was offered an opportunity in the UAE I'd have the my kids in the car on route to the airport within an hour but the bustle and vibrancy of big city life is appealing to me .

Saddest post ever BUT those who scour Qatar for furniture will understand . A friend of my DH is moving over from the UK and offered to fill her employer paid for 1/2 empty container with anything we can have delivered to hers. I'm so excited and frantically searching the web . My boys may even beds ( finally ) and bookshelves .

I've travelled with 2 under 2 on my own and can see why most airlines don't permit it - exhausting . Putting a CARES aviation harness on my eldest was a huge help as he couldn't wriggle out of his seat and he slept in the seat like he does in a carseat . It's not popular with non parents but I nappy change my baby in the seat discretely . I put my almost 2.5 year old in pull -ups because chances are there will be a queue at the loo when he needs to go and by the time I'd have picked up the baby and struggled down the aisle it might be too late . It hasn't happened but imagine trying to clean up a toddlers no2 accident in the tiny loo whilst holding a baby .

I've heard a medical certificate attesting the mother isn't fit to do housework helps . Anyone had any experience of this ? My health has certainly deteriorated since moving here and looking back I was completely bonkers to come here anyway . Perhaps I could claim mental health problems lol . I would like to go back teaching but I certainly can't take a job until I've some help organised . How come the locals get to have armies of nannies ?

At this time of the year there are many families about to go on holiday leaving maids to look after houses and pets but with plenty of time on their hands . Last year I arrived on at the same time and "borrowed " a maid for a month by advertising for help on this forum. Once we moved into our permanment compound I found there were plenty of girls living in with other families but looking for extra work or had friends looking for positions . If you don't work yourself it can be difficult to get permission to sponser a maid ( see my previous post ) Families do bring maids with them and do visa runs in and out of Qatar till they can sponsor them . Welcome to the pile of paperwork and inconsistency that is Qatar .

Although I know of many families with live in maids and stay at home mothers I have been warned that the permission to sponsor a maid is not automatically given if the mother isn't working . Recently I heard of a mother of three young children had her application rejected twice . Are there any loop holes that I need to be aware of if I proceed with an application . Would using an agency to help with a maid transfer be advisable .

yes it is a members only classified and you have just missed a public DM big yard sale over the weekend . I have a hooded sling bassinet that came with my toddlers travel cot - It's never been used so it if fits yours you are welcome to borrow it . It would be a ideal until the baby is big enough for the actual cot .

I have a buzz that my DH insisted on . I swear it is designed to appeal to men . I hate it as its heavy to lift , wheels go wonky on smooth floors and has no real storage . Admittely it was useful with the maxi cosi but beyond that useless . Don't even try flying with it . I quickly bought a Maclaren and I had another child within 18 months so bought a double Maclaren .

Lifting a tiny baby out of a normal travel cot is quite tricky , hard on your back and impossible if you have a section . I only used a track cot from about 6 months and then with an extra mattress from Mothercare . What about using a moses basket , pram with bassinett or cradle . Doha mums always has them cheaply in their classified .

Hi Raahatd Make sure you weigh up all the pros and cons of a move to Doha and calculate expenses carefully . We've found Qatar much more expensive than we anticipated , don't particularly like it and aren't saving enough to really justify the sacrifices . We moved here from another GCC country where we had a much better lifestyle and enjoyed ourselves . While it all beats being unemployed in the UK for us it's a means to an end . Luckily with two very young children schools are yet to be an issue but ive seen the tears many a newcomers eyes whose children struggle to get a place . We would LOVE to move to Australia if you want to swap lives :)

I had canvases printed at Digitech on c-ring ( opposite Ramada ) . This is where Kodak and other photographic stores send images to be printed onto canvases or posters . They then send them elsewhere to stretch and frame them but had a long waiting time so I took them to be framed elsewhere . The images were great And two a4 sort of size were 50 QR total .

(Is this asking too much.) a natural environment with tress and sand pists and natural playing equipemnt....rather than fake playing equipemnts and fake grass Would you like parrots chirruping in harmony with the gentle thud of oryx grazing ? Go on google earth and have a look at Doha honey , it's a construction site in a desert . The only school with a playground verging on "natural" is the British passport essential DESS but I know children who have been waiting for places there for almost a year .Anywhere good has parents queuing daily to ask for places so not bothered about tentative enquiries from abroad . Save your stressing till you get here or force the company PRO to get onto it now before schools close next month . Some companies inject cash into certain schools and places can appear for you . If you can stretch to 60,000 per child per year try Compass international .

It's just a place where the tatty or bad furniture that can't be sold in the classfieds ends up . Some of it ( by the smell of it ) is rescued by rubbish collectors and brought along . Perhaps if you are into shabby chic........

So let me get this right, the main issue with the driving is due to the roundabouts? I'm not there yet, but I'm scared to death to drive b/c all I hear is how crazy it is there and if everyone mentions it, it must be so. No its all bad , the roundabouts are just the worst .Buy the biggest car you can . My son calls mine "mummy's bus " . Anticipant you are likely to be in a accident at any time . I was reversed into in our compounds 10km zone .

Good tip Malaz I actually always have a abaya in my car in case I have a accident whilst dressed inappropriately . Once in Bahrain I was side sweariness my way back from a netball match . Going to the police station in a very short Lycra dress was so embarrassing but the Bahraini police have more humor than I'd imagine you would encounter in Doha . The motorists in Bahrain park terribly ,love to drive up the hard shoulder but I never felt they were trying to kill me like I do in Doha . It's the roundabouts here which seem to be the most crazy .

Manazel in Bahrain is a huge DIY ,garden and home furnishing shop with loads of outdoor kit and that's where I'm heading . I will also be buying a washing line and various other hardware . hopefully also do some clothes shopping and a brunch !

Well from my experience of living in my Uncle's maids room in Hong Kong and seeing first hand what some living conditions are like in Manilla I think Doha's maid accomadation I've seen aren't TOO bad size wise . My issue , and why i don't have a live in here , is that most are in the house and don't have their own kitchens or entrances .. In Bahrain most staff accomadation is separate and independent . Some Compounds even have a block of maids rooms where they have a common room .

I tend to think way ahead and stock up in the UK on trips back or buy online in the sales and have sent out . My parents live in NZ and fill the gaps with parcels from downunder . Last Christmas I raised eyebrows buying 6 pairs of heavily discounted kids leather sandals in Russell and Bromley whilst snow lay on the ground in Scotland . I have a baby and toddler and just buy a range of sizes . If neither wear them I can always pass them on to someone who will. I have " imported " reusable swim nappies , baby and toddler UV swimwear , a stack of baby and more importantly toddler length 1 tog sleeping bags ( never seen them here ever ) , nice lightweight merino woollen jumpers for colder months or travel , board books for the baby and picture books for the toddler . I would advise buying the next stage carseat eg 1+ years , a Maclaren or similar buggy for travel and sunshades for your pram . If you want to sling or have baby in carrier definately bring with you . I bought the ergo baby carrier and it's great even with a 2+ year old . I raid UK supermarkets for nice gentle baby wash products , organic baby cereals and toddler snacks . I also get salt free stock cubes and with any left over space ,stacks of nappy sacks and cheap hypo allergenic baby wipes ( J&J burns my own skin ) . I still am a bit of a eBay addict and beg sellers to do international post ( mostly positive ) and get quite a bit of new baby/kids clothing that way .

A real insight into Qatar's furniture desert is that approximately 99.99 % of the population will be at the opening day of IKEA whereas in the UK you might swing by the Swedish Warehouse of Horror if you are settling up for a uni house share or your first flat . And here in Qatar they won't even serve proper hotdogs . And although I won't ever be buying a bed made of chopped up tooth picks laminated with plastic - I will probably be there too . Currently some people even drive to other countries to get to IKEA !

It always amazes me what people sell as well as the prices they ask . Recent babysale I attended .... Used breast pumps - ewwwwh - It states in all but hospital grade ones they are single user items . Grotty baby bibs, piddled on mattresses , sucked dummies . 1/2 a pack of nappies !! Well used IKEA rubber ice trays at 3 tImes the 3AED they cost new. ok I don't need to buy these items and totally agree to recycling where possible but can't you give things to charity ? Poor maids are there selling Madams tack while she stands back counting the rials toward her next manicure .

If you like nice furniture and you plan to be here a while , bring your stuff with you . Furniture here is badly made and horrible or very very expensive and still quite horrible . I shipped everything I had and do not regret it in the slightest . You could actually make money to pay for yout shipping by bringing extra stuff to sell in Qatar . If you do decide to do this and have extra room in your container could you let me know . I would love a non hideous bed for my son who has to sleep in a cot because I can't find anything here .

Lalala is right . I went to both Al Ahli and Doha Clinic ( private hospitals ) when I moved her pregnant and both asked for marriage certificates before registering me . Even a unmarried couple spending a night together is illegal in Doha . You probably will never have a problem but there has been western teachers kicked out of the country for living in an unmarried relationship when the school got whiff of it .

I don't want to frighten you and there may be other members who have experience at complicated family matters in Qatar but from my knowledge it is going to be tricky for you . As a tourist you and your baby probably won't be be bothered but when it comes to longer stays you could run into trouble . Qatar is very bureaucratic and where you will encounter problems will be with your husbands employer , especially if they are a local company .Your situation could very well jepodize his job and I think it is very unlikely they would sponser a child without a marriage certificate . My friend had her first child as an unmarried woman , married the father 2 years on and moved from UK to UAE and had 2 subsequent children in Dubai no questions asked . When he was transferred to Qatar the company ( goverment ) could not sponser the eldest because she was born before the wedding . So this meant everyone went back to the UK because she couldn't enrol her in school or get medical care without the girl having a residents permit . So if he takes the job you need to get your partner to pay out the ex and tie the knot before the baby pops . There are many a pregnant bride in the Middle East who have had to do the same .

I would recommend applying for permision for a Fillipino maids visa once you have your RP and then use an agency to bring in a nurse as a nanny or advertise in the newspaper for a live in nurse offering transfer of sponsorship . When I advertised for nanny some of the fillipino ladies were trained as nurses or nurse aids .

Lucky you . I really miss Bahrain despite its troubles . It retains quite alot of remnants of British rule and is so much cheaper than Doha . *Good buzzy licensed restaurants outside of hotels * Very cheap salons and beauty * Four licensed clubs with good facilities * Friendly locals who quite possibly will be your friends and neighbours * Good quality affordable housing with big gardens . We were really sad to leave .

my advice is in this order ... Find a school (s) find a house , find some help . Hit your companies PRO's hard about finding school places . Some companies have a way into schools but mostly that's the huge headache most newbies have to deal with . It is especially hard to get a place for reception and junior school age children . That said If your company covers the fees you can try Compass which is well regarded but is possibly the most expensive at approx 60,000 QR per year . I know of people who use nursery /teaching assistants for temporary after school care ( you would have to get them to pick up your children in a taxi and take them home ) . There are also agency's chargeing around 35QR hourly ( including transport ) or you can borrow someone else's help for a few hours . once your RP's are sorted you can look at hiring someone legitimately . Most families with two parents working have a full time live in housemaid as they will clean , cook , child mind and do evening babysitting . The sponsorship of someone only is allowed once you have your RP ( can take a two week s or even months ) and then takes up to a month . When I arrived pregnant and desperate I posted on here and borrowed a lady for a month . Then by word of mouth I found a part timer who is super and more importantly my children love so I haven't bothered with a live in even though it would cost half probably . edited by BEDH on 05/04/2012

Just wanted to make Non Doha Mum members aware of two very serious incidents reported on their forum this past weekend One family reported a man exposing himself at the Aspire park playground . The man lurked for a few hours but depsite calls the police did not attend and he left eventually . Another family reported that a young teen expat boy was pulled into a room by two batchelors at Sealine . The boy luckily escaped but so did the perpetrators . They had been identified by the boy and his parents but hotel security let them leave . It seems unbelievable that these people are being protected by the incidents not being properly investigated .. Please keep a close eye on your children in public .

Al Rayyan is marketing at 23,500 to 30,000 but primarily looking to parcel let to companies . I don't know if the villas are different prices or the price depends on how many a company lets and for what period .When my husband has his PA phone they said 30,000 for one villa but wanted the deal to be done through the company . I know that a villa in Al Jazi is about to be vacated , they are really popular so possibly there is a waiting list .Coming from Dubai you are likely to be quite disappointed with the standards and price of compound villas here . I wanted outdoor space for dogs and kids ,privacy and greenery . We don't have a big budget so we too are in Al Messilah . Like Amy , I'd have gone to west Bay lagoon , Al Jazi or Riveria at a shot . Al Messilah is very peaceful and despite 200 villas is quiet too . Other compounds I know of have HUGE problems with children out of control for all hours , are located near noisy busy roads and have poor maintenance .
