CSH ,- I'm giving it a wide berth . Less than £700 a month ! I started on double that as a graduate in 1990 . :)

I think there is a suppiler that has machines and pods but I'd bring your plenty of your favorites anyway because supplies of everything tend to fluctuate and dwindle and sometimes dry up .

I have seen it once in Megamart but it was really expensive at least 200 QR a pack . Also if you have an Italian coffee bean addiction like me and a good supplier bring some - I just paid 199QR for bag of Lavazza espresso beans . Limiting myself or I'll have to sell my children for my habit .

I would be a little afraid to confront the parents as I've never met them and only seen the child's mother once at the pool . I understand the hesitancy of maids and nannies to discipline their charges but they don't deserve abuse . When a small American girl calls an older Fillipino lady " a stupid flipper " and says " don't you understand English dumbo " there are like both DebK and GinaM implied , serious parenting issues . edited by BEDH on 22/02/2012

I believe it's 16,000 as I have just paid this months rent at the office in Al Messilah and peeked at the ledger open at the current rentals page . There is a 3 bed single story being renovated now . I live in one with a baby and toddler and even thought I think it's expensive square footage wise it's so private , quiet and lush .

I asked around in August and nothing came to light. In Bahrain an Indian lady came to the house 5x week for a month and charged the 100BD or 1000QR all in - which was an bargain looking back on it. The dwindling Indian visas here have apparently stopped the practice in Doha. The only lead I had but didn't follow is an Latvian lady called Inessa tel 00974 33021749 She does post natal but as far as I know not the babies. She doesn't speak English but her daughter Julia , who takes bookings etc does. Her prices are 150 per hour + transport. I can email you her price list etc if you would like.

I'd second Doha Clinic It's a bit rundown and not the most popular with westerners . I arrived in Qatar in very late pregnancy and had no time or inclination to be kept waiting . I went there as it was the first place I physically found as nowhere answered the phone . They operate a first come first served basis and I went in the mornings and never waited more than 15 minutes and was always kept informed of any delay . My oB was Dr Rani who was very reassuring and I had a healthy 4kg boy three weeks after our arrival in Doha .

I live in Al Messilah too and since a company let departed recently , there's at least one 3 bed villa available (I asked on Thursday )but still no 4 beds - a hospital rents several 4 beds for visiting surgeons and they are empty 90% of the time . I think the compound is pricey for the actual houses but it's unique in it is so lush and well located . The maintenance is super . Nice residents too :) edited by BEDH on 10/12/2011

I saw Dr Rani at Doha clinic for the last 3 weeks of pregnancy and he delivered my son by CS . I was really impressed. He never had me waiting . I think he's Egyptian. Perhaps he's not busy as most of the patients were waiting to see female OB's. The clinic operates a ticket system but he gave me his schedule and personal mobile .

Starbucks has thin wooden sticks for stirring coffee . They are also very useful for canapé s and homemade ice lolly sticks . Daisco has that sort of thing too should you not have time to "collect " or recycle the ones from Starbucks .

The reason a infant teacher I know was given for her immediate dismissal : She has allowed a boy to go home wearing a girls vest which had been mixed up after changing for PE .The parent of the boy in girls underwear happened to be related to the schools owner . Weird but completely true .

Probationary periods with such short notice although very common in the Middle East are not the most reassuring. From my experience it takes gross misconduct for them to be an issue . In saying that I have know teachers who were given notice and had to pack up and leave the country in the same day for a fairly trivial matters. But perhaps the straw that broke the camels back ??? When we first made the leap from London to the sandpits I stayed back until my DH had finished the probation period. Other people I know ,did as you are and stayed in furnished accommodation, rented cars and generally minimised the risk until things were certain. Unfortunately they never really are and even once the probation period is done the lack of labour laws for expats means you could still find yourself on a plane out of the place at very short notice. BUT you will experience a lovely warm winter, friendly faces and plenty of people in the same situation.

Try contacting the Children's Academy in Bahrain (they have a Facebook page). They are a wonderful British special needs establishment and have extensive knowledge of services in the Middle East . Many of their pupils travel from Saudi to attend. I will also ask my friend who used to work there.

Good Luck - I saw Dr Rani who was very nice and reassuring . Doha Clinic has a ticketing system - you turn up to the scheduled clinics and take a no and wait to see your OB of choice . What impressed me is I was always kept aware of any delays and why eg - if he was doing an Emergency section .I never waited for more than 30 minutes . When you are heavily pregnant and have a toddler waiting isn't great .We were the only western mum and baby in the hospital . Perhaps it was the time of year or perhaps Al Alhi which defiantely looks newer is the expat fav .

hi I'd a big 8lb 8oz boy by ELCS at Doha Clinic .I found by going to the hospital for prenatal in the morning at 8 am and seeing a male OB my waiting was minimal. I say the care level and procedures though not identical were equal to my first birth in Bahrain .It is certainly a lot more comfortable than the experiences friends and family have had in the UK .My husband didn't attend but everything went so to schedule he had a meeting whilst I was in thearte ! If it is your first baby and you want an extra eye over your pregnancy I'd recommend contacting one of the Doha based UK midwives . What I 've found missing from Middle Eastern maternity practices for westerners is the kind of advice knowledge and answers a midwife would give.

The rents are 15,500 , 16,000 , 16,500, and 19,000 for 3 bed villa , 3 bed bungalow with maids room , 3 bed villa with maids , and big 4 bed villa with maids room . I don't think agents deal with Al Messilah . The manager no is 44874337 or 44871194.

I'm not sure about the validity of the waiting list as we turned up in Doha got a villa in Al Messilah straight away but we NOW know of people waiting for the same type . Some houses are empty , perhaps they are assigned to companies or are being paid for though . On thing is for sure , they don't like voids so if a villa comes up - it seems to be given to the tenant who will start paying immediately .

BEDH - if you move to Al Messilah there is a fantastic curtain man that comes to your house with all his samples & measures, fits etc. He's done some curtains for me & also a very fussy friend of mine & we were both thrilled with his work. He's been doing curtains on Al Messialh for [i'>years[/i'> so probably know all the measurements of every window off by heart! He's also not desperately expensive. Let me know if you want his name & phone number. Yes please :)

Wow we took the plunge and fingers crossed my husband and son move in whilst I'm in hospital having no 2 . That's if our shipping arrives ! Can either of you advise me where I should go for curtains ? I would just need the bedrooms done initially . Good ready mades I could pick up this week (due date 1/8) would be the best but those sliding doors look quite vast. I've a couple of drops of blackouts with me for my toddler.

Oh I looked at Al Jazi village in Gharaffa - a smaller compound with smaller rents. My OH forgot to tell me that moving here would quarter our square footage for double the price of what we paid in Bahrain. I don't mind downsizing but some of the places honestly wouldn't fit paintings i've shipped over.

GAC are in the process of bringing our cargo from Bahrain. They quoted 12- 15 days - its now 18 and I haven't heard anything. This is normal I suppose. What is also apparently common with them and I found out the hard way - they under estimate or pack loosely and then charge extra . The packing was uneconomical - I only caught a few of probably much waste of space - a laundry basket which was empty and bubble wrapped , a trunk of linen emptied into a carton and then wrapped separately. one carton tapped up before my eyes containing only 3 pillows . They are cheaper but need watching. I'm to pay 3700 extra for a pram. , cot and vacuum cleaner that didn't fit . i got the feeling they left them to last knowing I'd need them (baby due 1/8) and would pay extra. Also if you use their airfreight ( I brought essentials this way and it seemed cheap ) ask for an handler at this end.. It was hours of waiting for clearance and additional cost. good luck .

New to Doha and I looked at this compound today - light , spacious and well maintained houses compared to others I've seen. they seem to be a bit more of welcome dogs - I've two. The agent said management are Australasian . It also appears kiddie friendly. What sold you on it ?

What are the processes for registering a birth in Qatar and subsequent issuing of a British birth certificate and passport ? We don't even have RPs yet and baby is due 1/8/11 - 2 weeks today. Is this going to make things complicated ? I've heard an unhelpful suggestion it might even be illegal ! Just the stress I need !

We have just left Bahrain for Doha but spent three years in three different properties in Adliya . It is the social hub and you can walk to nice parks cafes and bars when its not hot. There was never any trouble , gunshots or roadblocks . it took 15-20minutes to commute to school and although its about 15km to St Christopher's junior or British School it took less time for me than for parents living 2or 3km away on account of the traffic in the burbs. Also helped my husbands commute to financial arbour as he wasn't battling traffic coming into town.

I've tried emailing Doha Doula's but had no response . I'm due 1/8/11 . Anyone recommend a doula or private maternity nurse or midwife ( do they exist in Qatar ) who is available and could guide a new resident through late pregnancy and the hospital systems . Kinda regreting my plans to have baby in Qatar in August . My OB in Bahrain warned me that Doha maternity care can be disastrously organised . Really appreciate any help . Thank you
