Hi ladies, how is it going? I had quit updating here because a) broke my scale and forget to weigh at the gym usually, & b) I have travelled 16 days this month. (so far..off again this afternoon!) Starting weight: 79.5 (early August) Goal weight: 72 (?) 24/10 73.6 Pretty happy with this, but not confused about how I got here. Busting my butt!

I recently bought one at Geant, but they also have them at Lulu. Would think any hypermarket would have a range of scales including digital, which is exactly what I bought. I think it was 80 AED

I don't think I can bear to go near the scales this week. :sleepy: :nerd: Ha, I felt the same! Entertained customers, and family came in town to visit last week. I haven't weighed in since last Monday, and waited until this morning to check the damage. 1kg gain, yay! I had 6 nights of fabulous food and drink, wasn't sure what to expect :) I leave Monday for a 2 week business trip but will not be checking in, as I tripped on my scale and it shattered after my weigh in this morning! Ha! Good luck!

smartee - glad you dropped the weight you wanted to but sounds a little miserable! I don't know what your staple diet is like or what you eat but if you generally avoid carbohydrates, my experience is that you'll be really sensitive to water weight gain. The scale will drive you crazy, just expect it to kick up a notch when you have a high sodium meal or a meal containing carbs. x

Whoa...Lasix does work but it is a harsh diuretic. Personally i wouldn't recommend someone use it without knowing their personal history, stats on their kidney/liver enzymes--just to be safe! There are other diuretics prescribed for people with chronic edema, acne, congestive heart failure which are milder--but these are not without possible side effects such as hypertension and anxiety so I wont even name them. I wouldn't resort to anything like that unless I have severe edema in my legs after a long flight, and I would go for dandelion root; it works well, and natural. But some people experience gastro upset, so it could be a double whammy. What really works? Drink lots of water! I go through this about every two weeks. Go out Friday, look like a puff ball Saturday, drink tons of water. Voila--Sunday I have dropped all the water weight, and sometimes extra! It's simple chemistry. If you are holding water, drink a lot, and the tables will balance. Avoid Chinese food and the like during this process :)

On a good note, the US Consulate in Dubai now offers passport renewal, and name changes, too. Used to be that you had to send it back. There's only a 2 hour calling window during the day, and a 3 hour slot each day for appointments. When I called, it was two weeks for the next available appointment, not too bad. I think the tunraround was only 8 days. Back to other comments, I needed an attested marriage license for that (name change from old passport). I have also gone twice in the past to get extra pages. Note: 24 or 48 extra pages is the same price. Go figure! :)

Oh, can I whine also? I had been so happy with the cleaning service I am using. then.. The last time the cleaners came, they sent two new girls. I walked in the house, took off my shoes, and nearly broke my neck. Who knows what they did to the floors, but it was like someone put a layer of astroglide on the marble. I am guessing they went ape **** with the Pledge on the entry table. Went to brush my teeth and realized the sink was clogged. Gross. They had shoved the stopped so deeply into the sink, DH spent an hour and a half fixing it. Of course they didn't say a word, they had to know they messed it up. They had also hung my laundry to dry despite DH telling them not to touch the laundry at all. They said, "It's okay sir!" The way they hung things meant I had ironing to do, so extra work for me later. Then, I was going mad trying to find what seemed like a lot of clothes--thought I was going mad. I got the dry cleaning back 2 days later....300 AED?? So the girls took my dirty laundry out of the laundry bin and placed it in with the dry cleaning bag (which says "dry cleaning" right on it) and DH none the wiser just sent it off. Wonder what they thought with a bag full of socks, underwear, dish rags, headbands--I was fuming! I honestly couldn't figure out what they did for the combined 4 hours--they did a real hack job on the floors which is one of my biggest things I need help with. DH just hides out in his office so he couldn't say either. To be fair I complained to the manager who takes this kind of thing deadly serious, and he offered to recoup the costs of my dry cleaning and send my regular girls for free. You know how it goes though, the good ones are always booked! (sigh)

I really do love all of the things this place has to offer - I just need some friends and for someone to give me a break from mommy hood long enough to get a mani/pedi and haircut. haha you're American and you used the word 'roundabout' - seems like you're "assimilating" My husband is American and he says 'circle' He used to say 'pacifier' but now says 'dummy' SCORE! If we could all mind our own business and stop commenting on how other people look I think we'd all be happier... There may be a junk food revolution but all I see is a craze for health and fitness..And mums obsessing about their kids eating healthily.. Personally I'm grossly overweight and have been for years but I refuse to lose any sleep over it..life's too short to stuff a mushroom... Yes please, who seriously cares about what others look like? "Hey world, I'm [fit, strong, curvy, fat etc'> and I'm proud and beautiful!" If the message is truly "acceptance" rather than "look at me" then my opinion is = quit talking about the outside, full stop. Talk about what's inside if that's the point. I truly don't care what others think of my appearance. (it took a while to get there and has not always been this way). Nor do I care about other people's appearance or choice of lifestyle in respect to fitness or eating. What I find weird is when other people tell me in essence they don't like the way I look. Or that I look better now than before, what they prefer, etc. Am I supposed to care and feel good that I meet their expectations? They must think highly of their own opinion. Am I supposed to feel bad when they put me down? They must think very lowly of themselves. That might sound b!tchy but think about it. For what purpose do people say things? In full disclosure, I am purposely losing weight right now. I have my reasons. Unfortunately even after a couple of kilos only, I am hearing what other people think about it. It's not all negative feedback but the point is I don't care either way. I think all this media attention on shapes and sizes fuels even more people to speak up and stick their nose in other people's business. The culture is shifting in the direction of a very nosy and outspoken one. Yuck!

:) I would call it "calorie management." My preferred method of managing calories these days is doing cardio 2 days on 1 off to achieve that. I digress, here is what I used to do 100 calories: Egg in morning with sauteed spinach leaves (100 cals) 100 calories: small can of tuna in water for lunch, with pickles (100 calories) 125 calories: 2 plain rice cakes with a thin layer tomato paste + shredded fat free mozzarella on top and italian seasoning (125 calories) (pop in microwave, pretend it's pizza) 175 calories: cream dory or white fish fillet for dinner with spinach, cucumber and tomato salad. Used vinegar for dressing and cooking spray to make it "stick." highest volume meal. Not a happy day but manageable for me!

I'm reaching a point in my life now where I want to be physically smaller. This is largely driven by changes in wardrobe tastes and my professional life. What are your reasons and motivation to lose weight, and how are you guys doing it? Starting weight 79.5 Goal Weight 72.0 (or whatever a size 6/8 UK ends up being) I''m 175 cm tall 24/8 76.8 31/8 75.2

My product arrived this afternoon and I am happily smothered in it :) Seems good to me, just like my DH used to bring me from Ghana; I also like being able to support the industry there. I was expecting a small tub for 80 AED--I obviously didn't read closely. It's 4 tubs, 250 gm each that you get for this price. I thought it was such a great deal, I was going to post here :)

Hi, I have an Emirates NBD credit card that has a good program for Skymiles and lounge access. Platinum I think. It is not the infinite that other ladies mentioned--I think with that one, the benefits are better plus with a 3000 AED, one-time fee, makes you a "Silver" on Emirates for as long as you have the card?? They even offered that to me for a reduced buy-in fee of 850, but I declined as I am a Gold on Emirates anyway. Thanks for the reminder...I need to check my miles balance :)

We have used Mr. Ganesh twice, he's really good. Most recently, he made panels for our living room windows (floor to ceiling) and it cost 400 AED per panel + 100 AED total installation. We went with fairly basic solid color with two toned satin stripes, but I would say the quality is pretty high and they are black-outs. My favorite part is that he comes out with swatches within 2 days of initial request, and the turnaround is about a week. Other curtainmakers probably operate similar. I just could not be bothered to go to dragon mart.

Ha. Fun :) I would say, don't sound too optimistic about moving here, or that you're optimistic about finding a job here! That is the worst way to introduce yourself and you will not make any allies. Certainly so if you post that your DH has been offered what is a great salary and package. The bitter ones seem to hate that the most in a newbie. Note: some sarcasm and some truth in the above. I think I have mentioned this before, be careful what you say here and this relates to the above. You can be identified as there are much more creepers than actual posters, and it could come back to bite you if you overshare. I was hanging out with a friend the other day, in an executive level position, and he expressed his dismay that a probationary employee decided not to stay on, as he was really an asset. I recalled a thread on here, and putting two and two together regarding the nationality, home country, and number of children, I said oh boy--I can tell you exactly what happened. A bunch of women online helped convince his wife that it would not work out, she would hate it here, money probably wasn't enough, etc. His response? Oh ****, I would have given that guy whatever he needed to stay here! Additionally he said his own spouse got blasted on here for posting a banal inquiry on where to find something in Dubai. He said I hate that forum! lol. So please take the advice here with a grain of salt as everyone's situation will be different here for work and packages, and overall lifestyle. For the right person, companies WILL negotiate because although the excessive packages are certainly on the downtrend, good employees are continually hard to find in certain sectors--so you never know unless you negotiate. note: this is not to say this forum is not extremely useful and plenty of our DHs probably end up finding good information on here, especially because it usually winds up on top google hits for "where to find xxx in Dubai." It's certainly been a huge help to me as well as entertainment...yes, in the good ol days. So sue me, I'm in that camp :)

Agree with all these ladies. I would have issues with hair fall on and off for years here. Then I went a spurt with almost none...only to be back to gobs falling out lately. For some, such as it is for me, it is simply a matter of dryness. My hair doesn't fall out from the root, but breaks in the middle or lower part of the hair shaft. You'll be able to tell if you look at the hair and see the root particle (can't think of the proper term) still attached. If that is the case, your hair fall might be caused by stress, lack of vitamins, or hormones changing. I try and keep my ends trimmed regularly and deep condition at every chance. I also have wavy hair, and in the really hot months, I do my best not to style it wavy where it can tangle, intertwine, and break. This might sound contradictory, but what also helps me is to comb it out after I sweat from exercise (again so it doesn't mat and pull) and I wash it more often to keep it tangle free. You'll have to determine what kind of fall it is then experiment with a regular care regimen. Good luck x

I had estate agents just open the door unnanounced with the landlords spare key while I was asleep too (in london) I'm surprised that happens here too. Oh yikes! I was surprised the agent didn't simply observe the obvious. Quite a noticeable difference between an occupied apartment vs. a furnished apartment. Even a "hello, anyone home?" I was more embarrassed for him than anything, he looked like a total moron doing that.

I feel very safe in my building, but I would forget to lock my door sometimes, especially if I was nipping in and out all day. However--ever since an estate agent and a client of his walked in my home while I was napping one afternoon--learned my lesson on that one! It was quite awkward and I scared the daylights out of them. Honestly though, not the fastest foxes in the forest, considering he was supposed to be showing a vacant apartment and it was clearly quite lived in....Anyway, I always lock my door even with DH and I are both home.

I know this is an expat forum discussion, but it's not all about the expats! People have different stances on whether or not it is positive for the overall economy to remove subsidies--I think it will be a positive thing for the Emirati economy in the long run. However...think it is a bit of a crock to suggest this will be an incentive to encourage more people to take public transport. Just like the tram which is useless to most people. Those living in neighborhoods totally unreachable by public transport must especially have a laugh at this. Maybe I have missed this, but there's seems to be hardly any decent parking at the metro stops. When I lived in the suburban areas of Dallas (in a state like Texas where things are quite spread out) there was decent parking at every rail stop, so you could park your car (for free!!) and take the rail into downtown. Another major put-off for me about the metro here is the heat. At least 4 months out of the year, I would be completely nasty by the time I walked to the metro stop and would feel more like jumping in the shower when I got to the office rather than jumping right into work.

I'm going to be in a position in Q1 next year where I can base wherever I want for work. Literally wherever. At first I was excited, and tried to think what do I really value, what do I want? I prefer close to this time zone as I can easily deal with Asia or North America, getting up a little early or staying up a little late. Seeing as it is a huge tax break, and DH needs to be in MENA 2 weeks a month...guess we'll just stay here. It ticks all the boxes. 1. Tons of international flights out of DXB 2. English being ubiquitous 3. Restaurants, pubs, beach, gyms, golf course within 10 min taxi ride or walking distance 4. Tax break! 5. Safety and security. 6. Convenience of delivery whatever. 7. Yes it's hot, but no freaky storms or weather Only real drawback is being far from family but that isn't new. Seriously--Dubai is it for now.

Worth saying though--there are plenty of guys (and to be fair, I am sure women) on there that do not just simply network. Not stalkers, but looking for a little something-something under the guise of networking or business. It starts out the same way every time--an "inmail" with no real common ground such as"I buy widgets and I see you sell them, have you a good price on 1000 XYZ widgets?" no no..it's usually something to do with they 'used to live in Dubai, do I like it, do I ever get out to such and such place, we should have a coffee.....' :nerd:

When I took Accutane I learned quite quickly that I needed to moisturize a ton. I used oil based moisturizers day and night after I got my first wrinkle. No kidding--one day, I was putting on mascara and lifting my eyebrows up (with mouth open) as I do...and the lines on my forehead didn't fade away :/ In fact I think I used the Clarins oily skin night oil...people usually don't agree with me about this, and say everything in the skin care regimen should be oil free with acne prone skin but our skin is lipophilic and will respond better to this than water based lotions. I had horrible acne and I have no scars whatsoever. I, like, egg, followed a similar routine and used spot treatment with either benzoyl peroxide 5% or Dr. Murad spot corrector w/ sulphur. I quit Acutane after a few months; it seemed to draw out a lot of the acne but really, looking back, I think it just needed to run its course. It wasn't from stress or dietary conditions. It was called turning 30 and changing hormones.

The internet is a weird, weird thing and I have had suggestions in the "people you may know" section pop up on linkedin that I do know personally but do not have a professional nor an email history with. Now THAT creeps me out. Alternatively, maybe he did look you up. I've been looked up by exes on LinkedIn. I don't know--I have had pretty good luck with tailoring certain clothes down. I don't mind saying that if I have spent 1200 AED on a pair of denim, I'd at least try to take them in before gifting! I don't consider that stingy. I have a regular guy in Satwa I use but sorry...I don't want to give his name out on this forum. I also use Knights and Lords tailors from time to time, and I think they are great. I believe there are two JBR locations, the one I go to is on the mezzanine level in the Oasis Beach Tower shopping center but there is another in Sadaf--pretty sure it is not called Knights and Lords though, I think it is 800 Suits? Shirts can be tricky though and it depends which kind you mean.

Of course it is not ok. But, if you love your friend she will still be your friend but you can only ask her not to smoke around you. If she really does not mean that much to you then you can break the relationship without it being painful. I would love my friend anyway, I dont have to agree but I will be there for her. Keepitsimple, I wasn't referring to you at all, maybe re-read my post? I was referring to quacks that promote food intolerance tests as a method to lose weight, not legitimate doctors that help people with autoimmune issues. There are a lot of "natural" or "Homeopathic" type clinics everywhere in the world these days and most of the time, they are not even licensed practitioners and prey on people wanting to lose wight or be healthier. You said nothing about weight loss, this wasn't about you. I also said I am sure there are some people this helps. I didn't and won't go into detail about my mother's illnesses nor mine--but trust me--I know what it is like to have them, live with them, and have to design a life around food logs, watching what I eat or drink. You have no idea.

I am sure there are some people this helps--my mother deals with gut issues and I have as well. I did as Daza said and listened to my body. But there are also plenty of quacks out there purporting it to be a weight loss aid, as if there are trigger foods causing fat gain. I had this discussion with a friend of mine that went in for this 3000 AED test and was convinced certain vegetables were making them fat according to the test. Um...we were also having this discussion over a few pints...certainly couldn't be all the beer....

I had a friend who smoked almost 2 packs a day then dropped down to about 3 cigarettes a day as per her doctor's suggestion, as he told her that if it stressed her out too much to completely quit, that wasn't good either. Who knows what people's doctors advocate. It is a slippery slope to judge and have opinions about every other woman's choices she makes while pregnant or as a mother. What about extremely unhealthy women that choose to get pregnant, and take medication they need daily that could affect their baby? What about women that bring children into a rocky marriage? What about financially unstable parents that continue to bring children into this world and become a burden on others? I would go crazy reserving judgments toward all these people, its a waste of energy.

I'm a little late to the party but still thought I'd add my thoughts. I left a career in sales with a large network to follow my DH here. There were really no opportunities here in my sector and although I still keep in touch with many of my old clients, to this day, as the years went on I fell too far behind the times to warrant a re-entry--even if we did move back. I struggled with a few jobs here that I hated. One company folded, another grossly underpaid me, and I resigned from one before my boss did a runner and stiffed everyone. Well guess what? Now I have a job I love, in a field that I find intriguing, and I am on my way to being more successful than I really imagined--especially without formal education. I did have my skill set of sales and relationship management though, and like an education, no one can take that away from you wherever you go. Even if this was not where I am today, I would still have no regrets. I only regret what I did not do in life, and frankly, that's not much in recent decades. I am happiest when I take risks and follow adventure :) good luck in your decision OP

If the OP's handle gives anything away, she appears to be a stay at home Mom so I assumed there would be no childcare needed. If the school fees are included in the package, then all the better. (As I said I wouldn't move here without that included). Who is to say her child is not in private school now, anyway? I was private schooled and it cost nearly 35000 AED annually (years ago!) and was not an only child. We also don't know what the job situation is for her DH currently. The job situation in my sector is grim right now back in the States and over here it is not only okay, but in many cases, pays much higher than back home. Only she knows the answers to those questions. I think my bottom line is that Dubai is expensive as one makes it. And having certain things included in a package makes a world of difference.
