This happens more often than not here. Know plenty of people who have been through this, including myself. Because there is no bankruptcy protection here it is also not unheard of for owners to abscond and labor law cannot protect anyone at that point. Have seen many lives ruined over this. I would suggest your husband immediately start looking for another job. Especially with no communication from management. As for what you can do in the meantime perhaps some other ladies can suggest. In my own case, after 2 months late pay, then 2 months no pay, I got a different job, didn't stick around. The owner ended up settling my balance 7 months later thank goodness.

Al Fattan will certainly place you and your guests in the midst of everything. Depending on where your balcony faces, that and the JBR towers would be the most noisy. I have lived in Park Island, that is a beautiful building, but also kind of a small gym and pool that I never felt was sufficient for the towers. A newer mosque is also directly next door and the Friday prayers can be quite loud. Opposite to that, Murjan is great because you have a Carrefour and Daily Gourmet downstairs. Rimal also nice now that all the construction is finished on the Plaza level. It's good because it isn't too far a walk to either end of JBR with all the shops and restaurants/hotels. I lived in the Marina for 6 years and only had guests twice, although it was always a consideration when choosing buildings...just one thing to point out! Botanica and Bay Central are also really nice buildings with what I feel is good management and maintenance services. This is important, nothing like living on a higher floor and nobody can be bothered to service the elevators in a timely manner.

Hi ladies, Can anyone recommend a good Friday brunch for couples please? Not after a party or group atmosphere, just somewhere really nice with good food and nice champagne! Thank you! I've been to BICE in the Hilton Resort JBR for their brunch, it is sharing style and quite nice. I think they are also buy one get one in the entertainer again this year..

I wish they offered it here. Heard it is the best for tattoo removal. They do offer it here actually. Thats why I asked. Medical Village provides it. http://www.medicalvillage.ae/pages/picosure But wanted to know if anyone tried it for pigmentation issues Oh cool, thanks for letting me know :) Last time I had checked they didn't. Sorry can't help with your question.

Agree with FD. Yep, I have been through about the same and have random dermatitis issues time to time from this climate. Calamine lotion seems to really knock it out. It is drying obviously however once the rash is gone I recover with lotion. I do not recommend using any kind of soap, no matter if it is for "sensitive skin." soap pH is basic and your skin is acidic. I use Bioderma's sensitive skin wash and have never looked back.

While it may be true that people are far more willing to overlook flaws of ours than we are, ourselves...it doesn't mean that OP can't get something taken care of that she clearly doesn't like?? OP, I don't know if you mean laser hair removal, but one thing I was warned about regarding laser is that certain kinds (alexandrite?) can affect pigmentation and sometimes permanently. Could be that, could be something else. See a good dermatologist. I really wouldn't mess with any over the counter lighteners or products until you know what exactly you're dealing with.

I agree, screw the scale. I was doing the weekly weigh in here (weird for me, seemed good ides at the time) and then I broke my scale on accident. Since, I have NO idea what I weigh unless I am forced to do so at the doctor. I hired a trainer this week because hey, we ALL get burned out. I have no issue waking up with the birds and going for a run, but I needed someone to force me to do all the **** I hate doing. because "move more" is different for everyone. It takes more for me because I am reasonable fit, and now that 5-10km run are fun--the impact is not the same as it was. Exercise can be fun, and definitely some of it should be. Even social-- I love my Friday morning run group. But great change seldom comes from a position of comfort. Eating healthy and properly is not my issue, it is the "push." Anouja, put that money you would have spent on a massage session into something that takes you to your limits. Oh and speaking of cellulite-- I am totally against those machines. If you know and understand what cellulite is and how it is formed, you would understand that harsh physical manipulation can actually make it worse.

Hi Ginger, I certainly would not call myself a thyroid expert and given the complexity, I think it best to work with a holistic doctor for the issue, and perhaps a support group or forum like the one below may also be helpful. You will get a thousand different opinions online, but only working with a professional that understands your history and lifestyle can really help. When I say I healed it naturally, I mean that I stopped the habits that screwed it up in the first place, all brought on by myself. Yo yo extreme dieting, extreme exercise, supplements to boost thyroid and etc. Once it was clear I was damaged, I firstly went to the internet and tried to supplement with herbs or nutrients that "supposedly" boosted thyroid function. Mistake. Only when I followed a balance diet that provided me the normal amounts of nutrients with no supplementation, getting into a balanced exercise and eating routine, proper sleep, and all of the boring and tedious ways that my physician recommmended--that's when I got better. But then again, I did not have a congenital issue nor Hashimotos or any other condition. The only reason I would come to this forum for anything medical related would be for a good physician recommendation--not for advice. Hope all works out for you x

Yes. I did this last week and have before. After all this rain the scenery is the most gorgeous I have seen it. Went through Hatta and as mentioned on other threads there is a diversion for expats. I call it the "Top Gear" road. Love it :) Although speaking of the rain, there are some wadis on this route that fill up and I was glad to be in an SUV. I like to drive the coastal route down the 1 to Muscat but heard the Al Ain route is also nice, and as OD says, you can stop in Ibri and Nizwa. As for safety...I find Oman quite safe both in the major cities and the industrial areas but comfort is an individual thing; can't tell anyone they should feel safe or definitely will be. As far as road safety, if you are a nervous driver or the panicky type, it may not be right for you! The extra water thing is no joke, though. I took a wrong turn last week coming out of Nizwa and was a while before I came back to a place that had a convenient store that sold water. Petrol stations were plentiful though. Almost every place accepted dirhams as well as OMR which is good. Love Omani people and always feel refreshed coming back to Dubai.

Lessons I've learned as an expat in 3 countries 1. When someone invites you to experience their culture, which is different from yours, say yes as often as possible. You will rarely regret it. 2. You never know who you are talking to. Always be kind 3. At the core, we're really not all so different. 4. If making money was the reason you became an expatriate, don't lose sight of the goal 5. If you are on the receiving end of stereotyping--shake it right off and don't get bitter. We all do it at some level and we all experience it as well. 6. Be flexible and adaptable 7. If you have a lush lifestyle, don't get cocky. You never know when the proverbial rug can be pulled from underneath you. 8. Being an expat broadens your horizons. Not everyone gets that experience; be patient with your family or friends back home that aren't as open minded and well traveled as you are.

If your regular gynecologist cannot advise, or you do not have one, try calling or visiting American Hospital. As well...you may want to google by which mechanism the pill works as it is not a "catch all." The drug companies claim it is only effective before ovulation. (thus the controversy surrounding the drug). I hope you are okay.

I had a great experience with a maid service here, got lucky with a great maid out of the gate. It is a 4 hour minimum with this particular company, and I think she allocated the time perfectly. As time wore on, said maid in particular was getting booked up and it was harder to get appointments when I needed them, so I accepted an appointment with 2 maids who cleaned for 2 hours. Result was not good as the cleaning was not up to par and worse, they didn't listen when told to leave certain things alone. I spoke to the manager about it and he was determined to make it right; I think this is the difference, when the manager actually cares about customer service and satisfaction. He took the feedback seriously and wants all of his maids to be as good as they can be. Now when I call to book, he knows the level of cleaning that I expect and which maid(s) I would be happy with. If no one is available that day, he will tell me so, or, he will send someone and advise me to show them everything, not take for granted they will know what to do. It's just a fact that not all maids in the same service company are equally good. If you are able to find a service where the manager is frank about this, I believe this is the difference. But if you switch services every time you have a bad experience you can't really develop that rapport with the manager.

Hi Jumzy, sounds like you have a good problem to have, and I mean that in a truly "happy for you" kind of way, in that you have a good lifestyle and income in Dubai, and there is an opportunity for your husband in UK as well. I am not from UK and have only been to England, so I cannot comment on cost of living in various parts. I loved the parts of England I visited, as well as the pace of lifestyle which was much more homey, and echo the sentiments of Tessa from what I experienced. My friends that live there certainly get a lot more bang for their buck as opposed to what I experience living in Dubai. I agree that Dubai is not permanent for any expatriates and a good place to save as much as possible, enjoy, and look elsewhere for later years and settling down so I do agree with Indie that it would be financially sound to stay as long as you can, if you are saving money. But on the other hand, an opportunity to work in UK as an expat with a guaranteed job is also an opportunity that may not be there down the road. I don't know the current situation for PR and/or eventual citizenship, or how the current global migration crises is affecting this in countries in the EU, so you may want to research that better and hopefully some other posters can help you with that.

It's sad to know many women here don't have pair of functional eyes or it could be just their age? I clearly mentioned that I am not the one scheduling things for her, she does things at her own that's why I am offended that why she doesn't arrange tasks in such a way that could facilitate her belief? I just asked her about few undone tasks and she told me, she Cudnt do it as she was resting after ironing and before doing dishes etc. I find it an excuse only. Btw, Thank you everyone who understood my point and gave me advice. I think so it's really time to let her go... I hope she finds a madam who can put up with her BS. It does get onto my nerves to listen such stories after a hectic day. Your posts were a little confusing to me as I could not figure out if she was a daily live in maid or live out. I assumed you were home as how else would you know she is resting all the time, unless you come home from work and only half the housework is done, thus, you are given excuses. I agree with CP that you've hired her to do a job, and that's that. However, your manner makes it hard to sympathize with you. If you are panicked at work so much, as you mentioned, and you lash out at posters here left and right, then I think you better get to stepping on getting a new maid. It sounds like you are really stressed out. Further, if you are a professional yourself, I can't understand why you would put up with anything less in your own house with people that work for you. And yes, I did miss that line about her setting her own schedule, my apologies. It is nothing to do with being old or blind but could be the facts were obscured by your defensive rants.

Smartee, is she is a live out maid that comes every day, not sponsored? If she is, and if I were in your place, and she did a [b'>really[/b'> good job, was trustworthy I would be okay with doing tasks in what I perceive to be an odd order unless I was tripping over half done tasks. As long as she doesn't make a big production about it, like running around waving her hands in the air after ironing and throwing herself into the deep freezer-- then personally I wouldn't care. It sounds like you just think she is a dingbat for believing something like that and it irritates you. Does she really rest an entire 30 minutes in between tasks? That sounds like an exaggeration. But if it is to the point where it is a major annoyance that actually makes more work for you and it is no longer a situation where you've hired a helping hand, then....drumroll....just get a different maid!

I had planned to take my Dad for a tandem sky jump for his 68th birthday in 2 weeks. Did not know there was a weight limit....he's 8 kilos over. I have a hard time believing that there is not a host of people that weigh more than 100 kilos that want to tandem jump and just cannot. Anyone know why this is, or if there is another local option besides the drop zone on the Palm? I inquired to a young lady on the phone, trying to understand the physical reason and her response was that it is just their liability insurance policy. Any advice appreciated

Yep. But the sooner it bottoms out, the quicker it fires back up. Although, that's historically what has happened, and for some intangible reason I feel it is not exactly the same this time around. I would never expect oil to get to $100 again, but when it was that high, there was an enormous investment and interest in energy sources outside fossil fuels. When the price would rise after bottoming out, investment would slow down in alternative energy sources. However, what is different this time is the global "buy in" on climate change. It is not a fairy tale or conspiracy theory any longer. While (I believe) this is yet another warming cycle that would have happened anyway, clearly carbon emissions are not helping. This will also keep the oil sector from rising so high again. Further, with this extended downturn causing oil companies to improvise in many ways, if they are successful in cutting corners to cut costs, as it were, a rise in oil price won't necessary mean hay-day once again for the NOCs and Oil services companies. Industrial markets across the board are not growing and may not, so you see oil services companies expanding into sectors which will grow based on the sad state of affairs.

The idealism of this idea is not that bizarre now, is it?? It shows you how fickle this forum is. Someone wants to have an elective surgery or inject botulism into their face and you don't hear the peanut gallery focus on complications near as much as in this thread. Are complications in birth more common? Dramatic and sometimes unpleasant-- yes. I've been queasy around births with zero complications, but that's just me. Nearly fainted when I saw how an epidural is administered. (Shudders). I have a friend who had her 2nd at home, in an inflatable bathtub of sorts. Her husband was in the tub with her. Heck, maybe the whole family was--I really didn't get the floorplan and itinerary and if it is not weird for them, it's not weird for me. Children are resilient yes, and I'm no expert but they respond to their parents reactions and perceived fears I would guess? The unpredictability and uncontrolled atmosphere is what I would worry about, for instance, doctors and nurses will not mince words and speak like kindergarten teachers simply because a child is present, should there be an emergency. And as far as epidurals, bit of pain usually comes before those are administered, and I don't think I would want my child to hear my howling like a wolf or swearing at my (not so useless) DH. Sorry can't help more, OP.

If not, I might drop them to my guy in Satwa that specializes in embroidery and see if he can't do a cool floral pattern with white silky thread. I just can't bear to have only worn them three times and all that money down the drain. Never going expensive again for white stuff!!!

Hi, dye experts! reviving this thread as I have a couple of questions I couldn't find answered on search option... 1. once you dye clothing in your front load washer, are you freaked about washing the next load? Any residue from the dye remaining? 2. I got an oily hot sauce on a pair of white jeans, pre-treated with dish soap (which has never let me down) and the stain hasn't come out :( I've even tried a little spot bleach to zero avail. They were really expensive and hate to "lose" them. I've only bleached the one spot although it obviously didn't change the color of the white jeans. Would this spot not pick up the dye well?

Like I said --I could be wrong and looks like I am. Saw a couple of threads pertaining to recruiter threads and I thought here we go...this forum isn't like it used to be. I am sorry. Regarding the OP situation and back to the topic, yes--I have been in a similar situation which spawned my original advice. I found life very difficult following my partner here 6 years ago. We are married now, all is rosy and dandy, but it was a struggle. If I could do it again, I would recommend as I did above, getting set up with a recruiter. Hey, some people get lucky, and there are exceptions to the rule. So much easier to find a job if you are already gainfully employed. Whether searching abroad or at home x

Yes perhaps a little cynical and of course could be wrong. I stopped visiting this forum much and putting too much thought into giving advice because it always seems to follow a formula. A cluster of threads emerge on one specific topic. Newbie posts. Advice & responses to follow. Another newbie replies (sometimes signing up the day of the post) and a recommendation is given for a business or service. OP thanks the other newbie for advice. But then again, people will always follow the advice they are hoping to hear.

Do you work now? I don't know your current career or financial situation, but I would personally be hesitant to give up a job in my home country and follow my partner to Dubai. The job market here can be notoriously competitive depending on your industry, and if you don't have a job now, I would think finding one in Dubai will prove even more difficult. While some salaries are much more attractive here vs. the salaries for the same role in UK, other positions pay far less than in UK, i.e. office administration work. Without knowing more, I would suggest staying behind for a while to get a feel for how stable this new job is for your partner. As well, he can evaluate the cost of living vs. what it is for you in the UK, and determine what kind of salary you should be looking for here. In the meantime, you can send your CV to some Dubai based recruiters to help you in your search. If marriage is in the cards for you two, sure, you could do it before moving here and you could be sponsored by your then husband and get a visa. However that is assuming his work contract allows for sponsoring a spouse, rather than being hired on single status, and there is a sufficient housing allowance. There is a lot more to consider...I have seen people follow a partner here and seen it end in both disaster and success. Do your research, and be realistic, but if you feel like rolling the dice, by all means.

Perhaps it's just the age I am or the fact that it's done differently in the UK, but even out here I still always go and see a GP first, before I even start to think about seeing a specialist. Some issues can be caused by so many different things I would hate to see the wrong person. I agree. I wish I could find a good GP here covered by my insurance and not too far away, or too difficult to get an appointment with. I know. Lots to ask!

Hi, just got a papyrus put in double glass + frame at Desert Frames in Satwa. Someone else recommended the place next to "Park n Shop"...but I had no idea what that was, so I went to Desert ,as I know Satwa fairly well. It turned out really nice and cost 300 AED for a glazed wooden frame size 36" x 26" approximately. I have no idea if that's a good deal. P.S. Might try Picasso for the next time as Green Community is closer to me :)

I ended up going to Desert Frames yesterday as was running errands in Satwa. They did have a nice selection and Salih was very helpful. They actually do double glass frames with no border for papyrus/documents/newspapers & etc, but I was advised to go with a double glass + border frame instead due to difficulty in mounting & hanging. Price was what I expected, about 300 AED per frame and didn't cost more than the artwork itself which was a plus. I'll pick them up on Saturday and can't wait. Artemis, I looked at the website for Hamad Frames--that place looks really neat, hope to stop in there when I get out that way. Thanks for the tip :) By the way, how is your cat doing?? It's been a while since we had ours fixed and guess what--he is still a naughty and loud spaz lol. So much for that!

labello, when you say you try to help, does your husband ask for your help, or complain about being out of shape and not knowing what to do about it? Or is this is more a case that you have started to develop a distaste for his size which didn't previously bother you, or you never really were happy with it and thought you could change him? Hard to give advice without knowing the real story. It sounds like you are rather petite and have always been fit. For people who never have, the task of getting in shape seems very daunting and it's easier to procrastinate then tackle it. If it were me, and my husband was complaining about being unfit and making excuses, I would tell him the same thing I tell everyone else. Make the time, if you want it badly enough, and best to exercise first thing in the morning before work life gets in the way. I would also stock the house with good food choices and cook at home as much as possible, in any case. What's your social life like? Often we give into our partner's choices in order to spend more time together. If he would rather go for dinner/drinks at night to unwind, you can always say you'd rather go to the gym instead--and do it. Or, if you are one of those people that can eat take away a few times a week, or go to weekly brunches/drink alcohol without it affecting your size, be mindful it isn't that way for everyone and you could be adding to his weight issue. Any lasting changes are going to come from those who truly want to change. Lead by a positive example and focus on what you love about your husband, not his weight, because that is what lasts.
