Actually, the kind of food doesn't really matter, not for losing weight. Caloric deficit with sufficient protein is all that's necessary. I used to be a "clean" eater (whatever that means) and never felt totally fulfilled. I keep an athletic level of body fat just fine eating whatever I want, as long as I can track the calories. Anyone can. For me, Chicken tastes a lot better with barbecue sauce and potatoes are much better loaded with butter! If you give up bread and sugar, you certainly can ingest more volume. For me, more volume is not more satisfying. Just for the people that think they have to cut certain things. ;)

Is this because of people driving into the tram? I remember it happened right after the tram was opened, and our watchman told me it happened again in early-mid December.

Nomad, how sad, so sorry. I can't imagine how you feel losing a furmember of the family. :( he was certainly loved and enjoyed. I wish you peace at thiis time...animal bonds are so special. They understand us so well, and you did such a noble thing taking him on 20 yrs ago. 20 years...you did something right! Xx

DH and I rented a penthouse in a hotel that had an awesome catering and open bar package. We only had 35 guests, but there was a lot of food left over. The place was huge and could have suited 70 easily. We have a JOP in the family, and had our ceremony there, too. (After cocktail hour :) ) perhaps if you cut down the list a bit, you might find a hotel package like that? The entire thing cost us about $5000 USD but the hotel was pretty posh. I still thought it was a steal.

Agree with Lola, I mean, cooking dinner in general is just so 1970's! Kidding, that menu actually sounds right up our alley, Silveset :) We usually do Chinese take away on New Years Eve, it just feels homey to us with some big city nostalgia. Will be soaking the black eyed peas to eat on New Years Day, that's enough effort.

Fatexpat, it sounds like you are the one that is upset, judging by your last reply. Just because someone does not fully subscribe to a dietary dogma does not mean they are drinking the koolaid and believing everything the FDA or USDA tells them, or that they are not well researched as to what juicing is, nor ignorant to the tenets of that particular dietary choice. Not every doctor is a misinformed marionette of big pharm, either, and good doctors understand that achieving optimal health is a holistic approach. Hope you lose all the weight you wish to, and good health to you.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that simply balancing a meal out cuts the insulin spike down. Adding a protein or fat component, for instance, accomplishes this nicely. Many fruits contain sufficient fiber as well, but you lose that when you juice as opposed to blending, while you do get all the fructose. I've seen firsthand what juicing can do, as far as healing renal or liver disease. However, the average healthy person doesn't require such aggressive methods. Juicing doesn't "detox" like CM said, your organs do this, and it certainly doesn't do something magical to jump start weight loss. Unless juicing causes you to eat less calories, and in that case, just be aware where the weight loss is coming from. If you like juicing and it works for you, great, but it is not necessary. One should also be mindful of getting too many vitamins. More bioavailability isn't necessarily better. I have a friend that was a kale juicing freak, and in an effort to be more healthy, she actually negatively affected her health. I can't recall exactly what her doctor determined but I think it was too much oxalic acid that affected her ability to absorb other vitamins, resulting in a deficiency. I've done something similar. Believing fruit was bad or a ticket to insulin resistance, I used to eat a ton of vegetables in order to get the necessary vitamins, and never was I more sick! An inflamed ileocaecal valve takes a long time to repair. :( Happy health to everyone in 2015, and I hope you all accomplish what you're trying to do. Pay attention to your health markers and simple biofeedback. Energy levels, sleep quality, libido, skin health, digestive efficiency, blood pressure, bloodwork, and the like. That will tell you if you are on the right track for you personally, and don't believe everything you read :)

Beebers, from what I remember, the mole mapping was 600 Dhs for the first 10 and 350 for every 10 after that. The biopsies are pretty expensive as you pay for a. having them removed and then b. for the lab work. Luckily because of my diagnosis the insurance covered it all, although I had to fight to get them to pay up for a large chunk as they had a cut off and were being stupid about it. But I won it all back in the end. In that case, better wait until my DH's insurance kicks in next month. Certainly not going to pay that out of pocket as the doctor himself wasn't too worried about any of them. Oh, and the suspect mole that cropped up so suddenly was a splinter!! Asked my DH up and down if he was sure he didn't injure himself, because it looked like a blood blister. I swear the man doesn't get bothered about anything, didn't even remember. That one sorted itself soon after the doctor visit and glad we didn't pay to biopsy that! Or, his eczema! As I said we will be looking for a different doctor lol

Reading the comments was a mistake....why do I ever do that??? Why? If that is what people think then so be it, there is probably an element of truth in their comments from their own perspectives. I do wonder who they work for and whether their companies take on board such statements and review their staff training programs and employee criteria. lol Honestly, it makes me sad. When I read the comments on an article, youtube video, or what-have-you about a certain race or nationality, I feel sad when I see the ******** that people believe when they have a one-sided or limited vantage that makes them spew hate. I should be accustomed to it, being American (we get our share, and certainly spew our share), but I still think it sucks. Referring, by the way, to the comments on the facebook link edited by Beebers on 29/12/2014

Yes I had 6 sessions for underarm hair and paid full price at an esteemed clinic in Dubai...two months later all the hair has grown back and strong again. Grrrr! Never will I pay full price for lazer hair removal again. Ugh! That has been my worry. All of it came back?? I had my bikini area done 15 years ago, it was quite costly, and only 30% of the hair was "killed." I guess I'll take my chances.

Hi Ladies, wondering if you can help. I'm looking to get laser removal/reduction on my legs. Epilators don't seem to work on my legs, not willing to go so long between wax sessions, and shaving is a nightmare for me. To add, I know my skin and hair color make me a good candidate, as I had a consultation years ago, however treatment not-so-successful as the lasers 15 years ago weren't as good. I saw there are some offers on Groupon for Montreal Clinic, GSM Medical Centre, and Al Borj Medical Clinic. Current offers range from 1299-1699 for these clinics for 6 sessions on a large area of the body. It is awful tempting. Anyone have feedback from one of these clinics, or know of any other clinics currently doing offers like these? Many thanks!

Hi KK, just to give some other input, based on the 2 bedroom requirement and the area you enjoyed living in. In the Marina, the rents start at 110,000 for 2 beds. Whereas it used to be that you could get into JLT or Discovery Gardens (or the Greens, Motor City, Green Community) for much less, it's not really the case anymore. Our friends that moved away from the Marina to save money in those areas have moved back, because they were paying nearly the same rent and missed all the Marina has to offer. JBR also has seen a facelift on the Walk, which is nearly complete. There is an entirely new section called "The Beach" which has a lot of new restaurants, shops, a cinema, and promenade. Rents there for 2 beds start at about 130,000. I think the best thing to do is search online for 2 bedrooms in Dubai, and see which areas fall in your budget. There are rumors that the rent increase that landlords are allowed each year may change, and I believe at the moment it is 12% max. From one year to the next there is no guarantee. Speaking of changes. Something that has been discussed on this forum as of late is the differences in packages offered to expats. It seems that packages which include rent or school fees are no longer the norm. Whereas some expats would not relocate to work in Dubai if these were not offered, there are just as many who do not care, so it seems to be the trend that companies will offer less and less as time goes on. If you're shelling out 10,000-15,000 monthly for school fees and rent, depending on your income and what you want to save, Dubai might not make sense!

Just checking back in. The spot we were worried about appears to be nothing to be concerned about. However, the doctor said to be safe, they would do a biopsy, and found 5 other sites to biopsy in addition to that one. We are going to hold off though, and seek a different doctor, as this visit did not leave us with much confidence. One spot chosen for biopsy was an eczema patch (previously diagnosed, recurring in the same spot from wearing socks!). I know we are not the experts, and wasn't going to argue it, however no one could tell us how much the biopsies would cost, nor the mole mapping suggested, though they were eager to schedule them quickly. This won't be covered by insurance, we wanted at least a ballpark. How can your clinic perform these services all the time, but no one at the clinic had any idea the cost? There were a few other head-scratchers, but I will leave it at that!

You are very wise not to wait. DH was told by a doctor that the brown mark on the left side of his face was nothing to worry about. We happened to get it checked out while at home and our old GP said it didn't look good. He was referred to a skin specialist and was operated on the very next day. Skin grafts and one sided facelift got rid of the cancer but he has to go for check ups every 6 months. Now wears a hat when outside and never goes outside without sunscreen even when there is snow on the ground. Hopefully it is just a normal mole, let us know how you get on. edited by Nomad on 20/12/2014 Oh my goodness what an ordeal!! So glad you all caught it! I'll check back in. We had to reschedule for tomorrow, which I'm not happy about, but is what it is.

How are you feeling Beebers? I know I bang on about them a lot on here but they made such a difference to me, if you are still feeling rotten maybe try [url=http://thehealthyhome.ae/'>Healthy Home?[/url'> I'm much better, thanks. didn't have time to run out for ginger yet, but raw honey and the teas I had on hand have helped a lot. A/C cleaners coming this week, and going to have the sofa done as well. Your suggestion of mattress cleaners is a great idea. We have a latex mattress, which I thought was anti allergy, but we've not had it sanitized. That company looks very professional, may as well get everything done!

Thanks for the info on here and reminder, FD. When I read this, I got on to DH as he hasn't been checked in years, and has a had a prior malignant mole removal. We made him an appointment elsewhere in January, but unfortunately looks like we won't make that. Going to a clinic immediately to check out what we are, unfortunately, pretty sure is anther malignant one. :( edited by Beebers on 23/12/2014

Hey ladies, thanks! As the day has gone on, I am pretty sure it is not an illness but drainage. Wicked, that's sounds great, actually have raw honey on hand. This might sound stupid, but I don't know much about handling ginger. Could I peel it, cut a piece off, and use a garlic press to "mince" it into some honey? Or is that all wrong? Daza, thanks for reporting back on that! I'm going to get some larger than life vanilla beans from the spice souk and finally make some. Actually, maybe if I just drink your topped off vanilla extract, I would feel better? Di, I think you are on to something as they are overdue. And yes, I was fine in a city with heavy smog, wind, and pollution only to come back sneezing. thanks for the ideas, I appreciate it!

I have seen Groundnut oil consistently in most Waitroses in a 500mL size--that is essentially the same thing, so keep an eye out for that as well. It will not be cheap, and you can substitute with rapeseed or refined sunflower oil. I deep fry chicken in rapeseed oil when cost efficiency is a concern and it is delicious. We deep fried a turkey indoors for Thanksgiving a few years back, and it is by far the best turkey I've ever eaten. However, it was a small turkey (3 kg). We also had an industrial cooker/range-top, an excellent ventilation system in the kitchen, and used a deep pot specifically used for deep frying birds. Anything larger than 6 kilos should not be deep fried at all, and as MC said, it is a major undertaking even with professional equipment. I would not recommend it as a first time venture unless you have 1 or 2 other people helping you and someone has deep fried a turkey before.

From my point of view, I wouldn't worry about the contribution for the wedding. It's your day and you want to do it your way.[b'> If your family want to invite relatives you wouldn't recognise even if they stood in front of you, let them pay towards a party after your reception. [/b'>That way you have the ceremony and reception you want and your family get to have a party later in the day No kidding! I didn't invite my siblings despite my Mom thinking that was "bizarre." My Dad said hey...it's their money! :) Hey, our ceremony, our money, no regrets.

In agreement with all. Seen all kinds of religious-centric Christmas decorations for sale. However, signs displayed outside the home are different. Don't know I would set up a lifesize nativity set on my front lawn. I asked my building management about putting Christmas-colored lights on my balcony, and they said no restriction on lights or even signs. It is done for various people's national days, Diwali, and plenty of others. However, they did ask that if I place a sign, or lights that spell as message...essentially keep it secular like "Season's Greetings" or "Happy Holidays." Diversion, sorry!

Does it really get [i'>that[/i'> much worse mileage than the smaller engine does? I've always found myself unhappy when I purchased a larger vehicle, and opted for the V6 instead of V8, or basically went with the smaller engine. Maybe I just like my wheels to have serious giddy-up :)

I need a big car. 3.5L is the bigger one, engine, correct? You'd want the bigger engine. I think it is a great vehicle. Several people I know have them, and I would like to buy one, myself! I will be looking for a pre-owned late model Pajero later this year. I've seen a ton with really low mileage in excellent condition online.

Cherpie, sorry for assuming that you wanted to order some books offline. If expats take such books over with them (I have) in their suitcases and cartons they ship, and they get through customs, I would hope you would have no issues with the postal service. If it were tarot cards or voodoo dolls, that would be another story. Hopefully someone can verify that they have received the items you described in the post.

I wouldn't call you foolish for wanting to read inspirational and comforting texts, but I do remember the throw-down you described on your Christmas thread when you wanted to have non-religious decorative items in your house and Izzy has a point. (I know Atheists and Agnostics that put up Christmas trees, but I digress!). If they were intercepted or found, they could only be stacked against you, which is sad considering the "colorful" literature and items you have found in your home. Do you have a mobile device like an iPad where you can download a devotional app? There are many free ones. Barring that, you could also download PDFs of the psalms off the internet into a tablet or a different personal reading device. I would probably avoid, just in case, a devotional journal or diary type item for the above concerns. x

The mini has been out long enough that the random kiosks at the big malls like Mall of the Emirates, or even Dubai Mall, that sell iPhone and iPod Touch covers should have them. I can't speak of the quality, as I have never bought one, but that's the only type of place I have seen blingy ones.

Also, as said above, drive around the Barsha area. There is probably a ton of places you won't even see by googling. There are also a decent amount of serviced apartments in Mankhool, Bur Dubai, and Al Nahda, but it can be more difficult to navigate some of those areas. Also you can't very well drive around if you aren't living here yet!

Polly, I wanted to come back because I, too, had **** with them the other night. broken links when I tried to verify my account to checkout. Ended up signing up with an alternate email, which worked. What freaked me out, was they charged my local bank card immediately, then said I needed to verify my bank card to proceed! huh? Luckily, my bank sends a text every time there is a deduction, so the verification was completed in seconds, but I could see how that would freak someone out. Alternatively, paying with a verified paypal account would suffice.

It may not get better, but you will get better at dealing with it, that's my advice. You are getting UAE experience which will be vital when you get your next position, and you will know what to look for when you are searching and interviewing! Not trying to sound dismal, and you have a little one which I didn't, when I worked for one of those types of companies here. However, my gem of a boss told an insurance company to call me on the day of my wedding when I was on leave (he knew, they didn't) because he didn't feel like giving them his own credit card number to pay the bill! "Call my Manager...I am very busy" So I know how you feel regarding scope creep and asking just too much. It is hard and the only thing that works is having the mentality that you expect the rub, but you won't be surprised by it or let it get to you. You will catch on also, when the right time is to set your boundaries and how to word it. I might get thumbs down for this, but I found when working for egotistical men here, being my firm Western self wasn't received well. I would usually say "Oh I would love to go lock the office because you forgot and would rather me go drive back in traffic so you don't have to, but my husband is expecting his dinner." I know that sounds backward but it was received a lot better than "Your incompetence requires my inconvenience?" or something of the like. It will be okay :) Just set those boundaries diplomatically. Sounds like you're pretty indispensable, and they know it.

Don't know if I am wasting my time (reeks of advertising) but I agree with dubizzle. Used them twice, both good experiences. If you narrow down the search categories to suit your budget and the areas you're willing to drive to view the item, make a couple calls, it's pretty painless. When you make calls, it helps if you know the dimensions and specs you require, saves a pointless viewing.

Highly recommend Hertz, been using them most of 4 years here. They will 1. Never charge you for fake speeding tickets that you supposedly got on a day you were out of the country (small time companies here have done this to me) 2. Pick up your car, wherever you are in the Emirates, and switch it out within a half day's notice if you call and say your fluids are low 3. Come jump a dead battery within 40 minutes if you are stuck..... 3.5 Come back an hour later if it won't start again, and install a brand new battery 4. Always give you a fresh, clean, and new car Prices may not be the lowest but they are competitive.

Some people use the words nanny and cleaner/maid interchangeably. OP, if your nanny also cleans/tidies, hiring a maid service to come in 2-3 times a week would be a big help. I'd bet on the side of the other posters that your mother can handle the rest and will really enjoy spending a month with your child who will only be "1" once :) I understand though, if I were in your shoes and it were a first trip to Dubai for my mother, I would want her to have some free time to wander around, go to the spa, etc. But that doesn't mean that's what she would want :)
