I know this is an old thread...but based on the recommendation here I paid a visit to Smitha for a haircut. Well, long story short, she completely ruined my hair. I would not recommend the salon for haircuts. poor Fnottle....you're a brave woman for trying out that place. I thought the post about Mrs Smitha looked suspicious at the very least. Not to mention that if a haircut costs 40aed there's good reason for it. I second Salon Ink, it's quite good and it's a lovely space, though the building itself is not very inspiring (btw, why do people insist on calling them "saloons"...drives me mad!)

My family stayed at the Sofitel and they really liked it-it was more reasonably priced than the Hilton/Movenpick/Amwaj Rotana but I'd check all these, they all have an excellent location with easy access to the beach, restaurants, bars, and not as expensive as the higher end 5 star hotels.

@QF: what broad and unsubstantiated generalizations...it's easy to play expert and pull the "I told you so" card when things go bad, isn't it? In any case, why don't you check some OECD reports issued this year to see which nations work the least (and it isn't Greece by the way).

Horse riding in the desert? Perhaps at sunrise or sunset so it's not too hot...apparently there is a stable right next to Bab Al Shams that organizes that. Or, drive to Khasab in Oman (not far from RAK) and go for a dhow cruise to see dolphins etc. Does he like driving? Maybe there is a carting even or track day at Autodrome or Yas Marina.

Anne, I don't think there is any place on the Palm that is accessible only by boat, but I could be wrong. You friend may be thinking of the One&Only at the Palm which is accessible by boat from the One&Only Royal Mirage (?). Regarding Reflets, I am probably the only person not to like it (I had dinner there). I wouldn't say it was terrible, but I found it to be a very particular place and a very particular menu that was not to my taste. Dipika if you had a special Vegetarian menu perhaps it was a different concept and execution and I can't comment on that. From my experience, I found the dining room to be lacking atmosphere, very heavy decorating style and without any type of background music, it felt empty and we could hear every table's discussion. I was disapointed by the food, although I could tell that an enormous amount of care had gone into it. There were in fact a couple of dishes, including my main course, that were so unappetizing I couldn't even finish half of the portion. I am not a restaurant critic but I do love cooking and eating out and I have been to many Michelin star restaurants in Europe to be familiar with such type of restaurant. Sorry for the long winded review Anne, point being that since your friend wants a lively atmosphere with music it may not be the right place to invest AED 2,000 on dinner for two:-) You didn't specify though, is this to be a dinner for two or a group event? Some places may be great for one but not the other.

Also, though Alfa Romeos are beautiful from a design perspective they have a poor reputation when it comes to mechanical parts. I would choose a car make that is popular here, because then you can expect to find a good service network, easier and cheaper to find parts and more car stock available for sale, therefore hopefully more competition and better prices. If you look around you on the street and considering the price range you mentioned, that would include Japanese, some American and a couple of Korean brands.

Hi Eli1979, Generally speaking the rate they will give you will depend on the volume of the transaction and they stock levels of the currency in question. Since it is hard to know their stock levels in advance, best thing to do is pick a mall that has several exchange places and go to at least 3 and ask for quotes. While doing that, also haggle of course, I'm buying so much, give me a better rate, etc, etc. I have found the place that is across from Carrefour at MoE to be more willing to negotiate than Wall Street upstairs or Ansari etc but again, it really depends so much on their stock that you'd better do the rounds and negotiate. Good luck!

Hi Jupiter, good to hear:-) I don't use waterproof mascara so I can't vouch from personal experience but the product info says it does remove water proof make up. Btw, I have since noticed that some baby skin cleaning solutions are of the same nature (micellar solution) so for me that's a big plus versus all cosmetic products that would probably be too full of colorants, fragrances, preservatives, etc to use on a baby. I also use their sunscreen and I am very happy with it.

I used to use the L'Oreal one mentioned below but for the past 4-5 months I've been using Bioderma Sensibio H2O. They have it at Boots and most other farmacies and it is excellent. It is an alcohol free and fragrance free cleanser & make-up remover and it feels exactly like water, except that it removes all makeup and impurities very easily. It is more expensive that the L'Oreal one but in my opinion a lot better since it has a better composition (fewer "harmul" ingredients), can be used for eyes but also all over the face and is not oily. It's a trasparent bottle with fuschia top.

Hello ET ladies, Since this is a lengthy thread, there are both positive and negative comments about ET, but I wanted to ask a couple of questions nonetheless and seek your inputs: -any feedback on podium villas and garden apartments? they look nice in the pictures but what's it like living in one? any issues there with the AC or water supply? any noise issues (are they too exposed to common areas etc)? -how easy is it getting in and out? I would need to head towards Emirates Towers for work and then head back in the evening and I'm not sure if there's an exit to SZR I could use... many thanks for any info you can share!

I bought 3 things a while back (eye pencil, lipstick and one eye shadow). Out of the three only the eye pencil is ok, though by no means great. The other two items have remained in a drawer and will probably meet their fate in a garbage bin soon. Totally not worth it IMO.

Hi Candyfloss, As far as I know the UK is not a Schengen country so I assume the UK visa you have is not a Schengen visa and would therefore not be valid for France. But that's strictly speaking for Schengen area travel-it is possible that a UK issued visa is accepted under different rules. Better check so you are not turned away at the train station or border....

For HP printer cartridges the best place I have found (after extensive research) is an Al Suwaidi printing shop on Sheikh Zayed Road, a couple of buildings down from Al Attar Business Tower, between Emirates Towers and Financial Center metro stations. They carry the most extensive range of HP cartridges and they also deliver but I can't recall the contact number currently. From what I understand they are an HP agent and could also possibly order cartridges for you even if they don't have them in stock.

Thanks Sugarbeach, sounds lovely. I checked Dubizzle today but only one generic listing came up and it seemed like one of these 'we do everything and nothing' type of agents that I never know whether to trust. I work very close by so I was debating stopping by, do you know if the rentals are handled only through agents or whether the developer has an office on the premises? thanks again for the info, keep enjoying Royal China:-)

Emirates is the most convenient but also the most expensive. Qatar Airways has good connections and usually quite competitive rates. I haven't tried any others but I have heard that Etihad is reasonable, especially if they have offers available, and I believe Air Arabia from Sharjah is the cheapest of them all. Gulf Air may be an option too. IMO it doesn't make sense to fly via places other than Doha or Bahrain, except perhaps Turkey if you happen to be going to the north of Greece.

Doubt it there's much at malls, but most places are open at Business Central Towers (near Knowledge Village) and there is at least a Costa Coffee and a Bateel there that would have coffee and breakfast type items and then there are tons of options at the DIFC and it is really pleasant in the monring. Any coffee shop you can imagine (Starbucks, Costa, Nero, Bateel, Caribou, etc) plus places with healthy breakfast options like Freshii and Joga. It's trully an oasis for non fasting people.

Hi Keila, I wouldn't worry about safety (having said that, don't stay in central Athens). It will be hot when you're going, probably over 35C, so wandering around all day with a young one may not work well. Most islands are very family friendly, I would pick a well organised hotel or at least one in an area with several hotels and facilities so that you have options and support should you need it (esp in case of medical need). For this reason it may be better to look at some of the bigger islands, for example Corfu or Cephalonia on the Ionian side, Rhodes, Naxos, Crete on the Aegean side. There are also some nice islands within an hour or two from Athens such as Aigina, Hydra, Andros that could be convenient to avoid long travel times. Alternatively, you could stay in the mainland but by the sea, Chalkidiki in the north is beautiful and within an hour of Thessaloniki (2nd biggest city in Greece, airport, port, hospitals, etc). Also the Peloponese in the south, within a couple of hours from Athens. Many many options, do some research on these places online and if you have more specific questions let me know and I'll try to help. Enjoy:-)

I would say it all depends on one's objectives. If you just wish to be conversational, then as Edna said, you should pick a dialect. If your objective is to learn the Arabic language properly then I believe MSA is the way to go. Once you reach a good level with MSA it will be much easier to pick up different dialects, the reverse is however not true. If you learn one dialect, a different dialect will most likely be incomprehensible. I'm following the MSA approach myself, but it is more difficult (a lot of grammar, syntax, etc) and you don't see results as fast as by learning a dialect and becoming conversational quickly. As I said, I believe it all depends on your objectives-good luck!

I would also highly recommend Madis Haddad, she did my makeup and I was very happy with the result. She's Lebanese so she can do the dramatic Arabic style but also more toned down, shall we say "European" style. I did a one hour trial with two styles, for which I paid aed500, and then she deducted the amount from the total price for the make up on the day. I was impressed by her professionalism, punctuality, the cleanliness of her brushes/tools etc and most of all by her ability to make my skin look healthy and flawless without being 'cakey' or yellow-ish as they did at MAC for instance. As I'm not sure she would appreciate me posting her cellphone here, just let me know if you're interested and give me your email so I can pass along her contacts.

When we were looking for a place in the area, several months ago, we visited 3 different apartments at the Quays. Personal preferences aside, the biggest problem for me was the smell of mold. Make sure you check areas low on the wall, near the floor, especially around the kitchen area. I spotted several spots where damage from humidity was obvious (though if they are smart they may have scrapped the wall and repainted, so put on your detective hat!). I was told that was partly because many appartments had been on the market for months and the LLs had chosen to shut down DEWA so there was no AC, hence some of these issues. I find it hard to believe that was the only source of the problem but just be extra careful about that since if there is the potential of mold it could be a health hazard other than just unpleasant.

It is only possible to get an e-gate card if you hold a resident visa. Before I got mine, I asked at immigration once and the officer thought I was mad for even suggesting I could get e-gate without being a resident. It does not matter what passport you have, the determinant is the residence visa.

I know...I would be mortified if I showed up at a wedding and I had to pay for drinks. I'd rather it were a dry wedding if they can't afford alcohol. Having said, that I guess it depends on the guests' drinking habits...if it's a group that is well known for their huge consumption capabilities I might consider a compromise (eg cash bar after a ceratin time or only for some types of drinks).

I agree with eveybody, but yet another side of the coin is all those drives going at 90km on the second left lane (if I could call it that), hence causing traffic chaos. There is a reason there are several lanes on a highway and the principle is you move from the left to the right according to your speed. If everybody applied those principles SZR would be a much better place to be, not to mention that we would all get to our destination faster and it would probably prevent situations where people feel compelled to wiggle in and out of lanes just to avoid the silly *&^% who is slowing down everybody. Oh and while on the left lane, it doesn't matter how fast one is going, if another car is approaching at a higher speed from behind and there is space to one's right, one should get out of the way....I never go over 120 and I usually stay in the left lane due to aforementioned *&^%$ driving at 90km on the second left, but I always move out to let people through if they are going faster and it's not my job top judge why they are speeding or take it upon myself to slow them down.

Fatima, Greek style yogurt is a perfect substitute. The best you can find in this market is a Greek brand called Total (the 0% is also excellent, you won't be able to tell is non-fat) or a close second is the Greek yogurt (full fat) of the Carrefour brand. There's another brand but I can't recall the name right now, they have big, tall tubs of yogurt with flavors, cereals etc. Their Greek Style (full fat) is also quite good but a bit sweeter than the other two so it may not work in all recipes.

I would stay away from Empost or at least from the DIFC branch. I mailed a batch of wedding invitations recently and about one third of them never made it to the destination (mostly US). On top of that, I was charged 3 times the price DH was charged at another Empost branch to send his batch of invitations. If you can find an alternative do that, otherwise make sure you follow up with invitees say a month later to make sure they have received the invitations. Best of luck!

I'm surprised so many people seem to have had GA to have their wisdom teeth removed...I wouldn't have done it myself, unless there were serious complications known in advance based on X-rays etc. I had three wisdom teeth removed several years back with local anaesthesia and though I wouldn't call it a pleasant experience by any strech of the imagination, it wasn't that terrible. And of course I was back to work etc; unless as I said there are complications, I wouldn't treat it as a major op. I believe the most important thing is to find a doctor you trust and who has experience in these type of extractions. The one who did my first extraction was so used to it that the whole thing was over in 5 mins, the local anaesthesia hadn't even kicked in fully yet....I had the remaining two done at the same time a few months later. Good luck!

I had my chef's knife done at Tavola, I believe it took 3 days but I was not at all happy with the result. I would almost go as far as to say there was zero improvement. I have since bought a niftly little knife sharpener from Ikea (believe it or not); it's a small black plastic base with two rotating stones at one end and a slot where you put the knife through and it works beautifully. You may want to try that first, before spending a fortune at Tavola. Good luck!

Hello ClairK, it's been a while since I visited Santorini and I was a uni student at the time, but I have friends who go often and I recently reserched it myself for a repeat visit. I personally don't like the beaches in Santorini much (I'm Greek btw) but I find the island spectacularly beautiful. Additionally, due to the volcanic nature of the island, beaches are not sandy, but rather a bit more rough (black pebble stones etc). I would recommend you stay up in one of the villages in a hotel with a nice view and nice pool. That way you can enjoy the views anytime, and visit the beach only when you feel like it. There are also some fantastic restaurants in Santorini, if you are interested let me know and I can add more info. Have a great time!

I wouldn't rule out Air China so fast because they are cheaper than others. I have a friend who works at their HQ in Sales&Marketing in China and he was telling me they have very aggressive market share growth targets, hence competitive fares to attract new customers. Have never tried them myself, I'm just saying there can be different reasons for a competitive price and it does not always reflect poorly on quality, safety or service. Perhaps some research on line would help, I'm sure there must be passenger comments or some European or North American association that rates carriers. Good luck!

Hi chi82 and good luck with your move! Regarding the car, I would actually recommend you rent for a few months until you settle in and assess what you can afford, what you like, what you need, what's available in the market. I was renting for almost a year and many people do long term rentals here, it's very common. I find it is usually cheaper than owning a car (depending on what car you buy of course) and it can help you manage your cash flow the first few months while you settle in. I used to live in Houston in the US and I was used to the highway system there so coming here wasn't a big change, especially as I have to use Sheikh Zayed Rd every day and that is a 6 (if I'm not mistaken) lane road. I was renting a Toyota Yaris for a while, which is one of the chepest and most common rentals here and it did the job, although when I bought a car I went for bigger and more solid, makes a difference in buys roads and traffic. With a US licence you can rent very easily and I was paying 1,800 AED per month at Thrifty from Mall of the Emirates which is in Al Barsha so it may be convenient for you, though I'm sure you could negotiate something better with a smaller rental company. Also bear in mind that once you get your work permit you will need to get an Emirati DL, but again, with a US licence you can just convert it, no need to take exams or pass any tests. Best of luck!

Additionally, there is a baby gender test in pharmacies, called Intelligender, that can be used as of week 8 and our friends who tried it found it to be accurate. Since you can just purchase this without a prescription and in fact you can use it even before an unltrasound would tell you the gender, it may be a good idea for your friend if they are anxious to find out. Since these products require government approval to be sold in pharmacies, I assume it is not possible that there are legal restrictions on finding out the gender, but as stated previously, it is perhaps more of a hospital or doctor policy.

I had a terrible experience at a branch of a well know salon which starts with an "N-" and ends in "...le" at Mall of the Emirates. Nail fungus after a pedicure and for those of you who don't know what this entails, it is a year long medication treatment with multiple meds. I have significantly limited my salon visits since and I now only allow them to use my own manicure set, including my own nail polish, whenever I go (btw, I have never been back to that chain and of course I'm not getting any pedicures until the infection has cleared). Please don't trust anybody to disinfect their equipment, and honestly, I have come to know that the stakes are too high to take such risks.

To pick up on this thread... Have you been asked to provide a medical fitnes certifiate? As pet the Dubai courts website only non-residents are required to that, but then there is conflicting info and seemingly even residents require the same. Got conflicting info on the phone too. Any real life experience? The medical test results can take up to 20 days, but the groom is leaving the country shortly and the couple wish to get married before that. Any real recent experience would be great. Thanks in advance. Hi Charredsoul, We got married at the Dubai Courts last week-medical tests are required by all, not just residents, and the results take 10 days to be issued (calendar days). Both bride and groom need to go to Safa Clinic together to get them done and then again to pick the certificates up. However, we had taken care of all other paperwork in advance and had gone to court to check with a judge if it was all in order to avoid last minute surprises. I would advise doing the same or getting a lawyer to do it for you. edited by Big blue on 11/04/2011

Cosmeceuticals brands usually have perfume free deodorants that might work as well. I have one from Vichy and it's quite good, La Roche Posay, Avene, etc would have options too. Try one of the big pharmacies and you should find something.
