I also just checked 312 behind the DIFC and was confused as there seemed to be bicycles as well as cars (other than race cars and police escort) going by. Any feedback from other roads that were supposed to be closed?

Just wanted to share. If you would like to ever marry in Court inn Dubai...be prepared..it is not so romantic !LOL I got married and the Judge first asked if I received my Dowry (I am German and I just said YES) and then he made my Husband repeat a short phrase in Arabic. That was it ! No smiles, no congratulations, no "all the best"...It was a bit odd..but the best part was the all in arabic marriage certificate, which i just got translated.... It was VERY religious and I am a little embarrassed to show it in my home town where I will register the marriage. I am sure the official there will have a good laugh that day. It said my dowry was received and my husband was previously single, while my previous status was "virgin" Glad I did not have to prove that. :/ It took us 8 months to get all the papers together and this was mainly due to lack of available information. Now I am curious to see weather this "Shariah Law wedding" is valid in my country. Insha Allah ! Yep, not romantic at all, I did the same. We did have a laugh taking photos at the overly ornate celebration room or whatever it's called. Regarding it being accepted in your home country what I did (at another EU country) is that I first registered it at my country's Consular section in the UAE, they issued some type of document that I then submitted to the authorities in my country along with the translated and certified record from the court. In my case I sent a lawyer to register it in my home country, hoping to avoid silly issues but apparently nobody batted an eyelid and the whole thing was done in 10 minutes. I believe most countries have a special registry under their Ministry of Interior (or equivalent) that is responsible for dealing with matters of marriages, births, deaths, etc. of citizens living abroad. Check if you have that in Germany and they should be able to guide you further. Alternatively also check with your Embassy/Consulate here, hopefully they'll be more helpful than mine!

Ok thanks. Any idea how long it would take to drive to Media City? Depends what time you need to be there; with no traffic I'd say about 25 mins if you're driving at speed limit but if you need to go in the morning during the morning commute it could take you an hour or more if you decide to take Hessa Street. You should also factor in DSO traffic which can be very bad in the morning due to the lovely huge GEMS school (can you tell I loooove it?); I leave before 7:30 and its fine but if you leave around 8 it can take 15 minutes to get onto Al Ain Rd.

Accessibility is great and if the school is in Academic city that would be very very convenient. Proximity to amenities, well depends what you mean. There are a lot of grocery shops, small spas, gyms, a pharmacy, some small restaurants/take out places near most apartments and then there is the big community center at Cedre with several shops but may not be walking distance, unless it's an apartment building on that side of the development. I read in the latest Time Out something about a "Silicon Oasis Mall" opening in April but I have no idea where that is or what shops it will have, though based on the name I assume it will be somewhere in DSO (?).

Just to add, maintainance fees are reasonable, I believe last year theyr were about 11,000 (annual fee). I suppose DEWA depends on the size of the villa and consumption patterns but for a 3 bedroom our bills range from AED1,500 to 3,000 (summer) and we're not very frugal with the AC. We also water the garden 3 times a day.

Have you tried print stores etc, for instance Al Suwaidi on SZR , near the DIFC or Spectrum printing or another place the name of which escapes me now, there are 2 or 3 big places in the DIFC. Though not sure what type/quality paper you're looking for, just thought this might help...

Assuming finances are not an issue, and that your friend can find the right person for this role they could get them a different visa if they own a business or have a friend who does, for instance as an executive assistant, this is very common. I am saying this in case a nanny/maid visa is not possible. But as others have said it's hard to find someone to fit that role, best case scenario would have been a family member or family friend. As an alternative, would your friend consider putting the child in a boarding school?

If you work in Downtown why not try the new Blossom at the Manzil district? We go to a different Blossom branch but we're very happy and this branch just opened a couple of weeks ago and I heard from friends that visited that it's really nice. If I had a choice I'd rather have DD in a nursery close to work rather than home so I could easily drop off and pick up and perhaps go visit during the day if I felt like it/was needed.

I also read a few months back that there is a new place in Dubai Mall that specializes in "medical" pedicures, theyremove calluses etc, it's another transplant from the UK where it seems to have a good reputation. I think it's called Margaret Dabbs or Dobbs or something similar and it is in the Shoe Level district. I had checked their price list a while back and seemed expensive but if anyone has been and can say whethere they're good it may be worth a try...

Zambia, you can also take a quick look at the WHO child development charts; though these are obviously just a guide and by no means a diagnosis on your child's growth as there are many other factors involved, they do give you an idea of where you stand in terms of averages. And that is also why they are used by medical practitioners. [url=http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/weight_for_age/en/index.html'>link[/url'> I will slightly disagree with Untouchable, because in my opinion, if my child was well below average and by that I mean by more than 10 points in the percentiles tables (over a period of time, we should be focusing on trends, not points in time), I might not have accepted a Dr's view that all is fine if they're active and have full nappies. Not because there is necessarily anything wrong, but because I would like to investigate a bit more just to make sure as I migaine there could be a few reasons causing no weight gain and some could or should be addressed.

Hi Zambia, I can understand your concern, though as you say each child is different and it may be absolutely nothing. If you are not happy with the Dr you went to perhaps you could try another one? I would highly recommend Dr Keith Nicholl, not sure if that's who you've seen already. Also, I'm thinking there may be a nutricionist who specializes in children's diets who could perhaps assess your son's diet, maybe do a blood test and then recommend some changes/additions/ etc? DD is 15 months and 12 kg so at 2yrs 11 kg sounds a bit on the lean side but you haven't mentioned his height and I think it'd be best to look at whether the height/weight ratio is balanced. Again, not speaking from experience but just thought I'd comment in case this gives you more ideas of things to look into.

Hi Mssassy, as others said avoid apple, banana, carrots, potatoes. You can search online for non constipating foods for babies and you'll find a lot of info. Generally speaking you want things that are high in fiber and also a lot of fluids. But it takes their system a bit to adjust to solids plus I believe the adjustment is slightly trickier for BF babies so it could be just that and she may not have trouble later on. Glycerine supps are ok, don't feel too bad about using them but of course if you reach the point where you feel you need them on a daily basis best talk to your Dr and see what they would advise. Good luck!

Hi there Inaina, our DD was there from 7 months to 11 months and she loved it. The ladies are very nice with the babies and they do a lot of activities. Six months later when I run into them at the DIFC they still ask me about DD, they seem to take a genuine interest in the babies they care for. It's also great for moms who work nearby as you can pop in and see your little one and they have pick up and drop off at the valet area which can be very convenient. My concerns/criticism while we were there were that it was a bit too busy, there is no outdoors area and that it is very expensive. Having said that, DD was always very happy there and it's hard to put a price on that. As I mentioned this was 6 montsh ago so hopefully you'll get some comments from moms who still have their LOs there now. Hope this helps!

Hi Big blue - good to hear from you :) Many thanks for the tips - I would love your recipe! any recipes very welcome! Sorry for the delay Mols, here you go... For the fish cakes I buy either fresh cod filet or nile perch filet from C4 (I find at least the one in MCC has good quality fresh fish especially if you go early in the morning -Friday or Saturday morning since we're working). You only need a small piece, maybe 200-300 grams but you can use the rest for other things or even freeze it. These filets don't usually have bones but of course check carefully to make sure; I find it's easier to do once cooked, I just flake it and check. I put the fish with a little bit of olive oil in a non stick pan, added a bit of salt and pepper and I also added some chopped onion and red pepper for more taste. I cooked it lightly as it will cook some more once you form the fish cake but it has to be cooked enough to flake it. In a pot I boiled some cut up veg until they were soft enough that DD could have eaten on their own. I used courgette, potato, carrot, green peas but you could use other combinations if your son likes something in particular. I drained, mashed slightly with a fork and mixed with the flaked fish. I then formed little fish cakes, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried them lightly in vegetable oil and blotted with a kitchen towel to absorb the extra oil. I served them with a side of bigger pieces of veg (e.g. carrot sticks, potato cubes) that DD could pick up and eat herself. Another thing DD loves that you could give as a finger food is cheesy muffins that are relatively healthy. The ingredients are half pint of flour (I use a mix of white and whole wheat to make them more nutritious) mixed with 4 teaspoons of baking powder, half pint plain yogurt, half pint grated cheese (I use a mix of soft and hard, the hard because it's more salty and gives more flavor, for example mild cheddar and parmesan or emental and pecorino, etc), 3 eggs, 3 table spoons of olive oil. Mix it all in a bowl, best to mix the cheese in last and put in muffin molds. I use the small size silicone ones and this makes 24 small plus 2 normal size muffins. I cook them for about 20-25 mins in a gas oven at 180 C but you just need to check with a toothpick that it is cooked inside and is getting a nice golden color on top. Once they cool down I keep a few and put the rest in portions of 4 in ziploc bags and freeze. When you want to use just take out of the bag so they don't get soggy if a bit of ice has formed, it's easier if you do so at night so they're ready the next day. They keep really well and are a great snack for the nursery or for when out and about and your DS can hold and eat by himself. Hope this helps!

You can find Milton at pharmacies and some supermarkets. I believe I've seen it recently at Supercare and Life pharmacies and I think our Spinneys in DSO stocks it too. Tommee Tippee bottles are available at Mamas & Papas and Babyshop, some pharmacies and some supermarkets but hard to say exactly which one may have stock currently. SMA is widely available at supermarkets, we use Aptamil but no reason to change if SMA is working for you. Again, C4 and Spinneys definately have SMA. Good luck!| Thank you ref the Milton I never thought you could get it here :-) It is, but I don't think it's widely used where you find stock is a bit random and the shop assistants may not immediately realize what you're talking about:-)

I was also with Dr George a year and a half ago and I think he's excellent and his manner is great. He takes time to explain things and to answer all your questions. He is expensive and I suppose depending on your insurance you may be a bit out of pocket but if I were you I'd book an appointment and see how you feel about switching afterwards. Good luck!

I would probably look into changing nurseries if that is feasible. Besides the fact that a baby/toddler can go through phases and eat or not certain things, if you're not getting a good vibe from her teacher this for me would be reason enough to make a move. And of course you should be able to see the CCTV footage without even needing to justify your request, although as I understood you are suspecting they are throwing the food away to make you think your child has eaten everything so It's very likely the footage you're interested in will not be there or will have disappeared due to some "technical issue". If your child doesn't seem to be happy there don't keep her there hoping it will change...

Don't feel like there's something wrong Jupiter, all babies are different and even the same baby will go through different phases even every few weeks. DD used to hardly sleep at all during the day, we were trying and trying, she would sleep for 15-20 mins that was it. That lasted from let's say 2 weeks to about 4 months. She then started taking 2 and sometimes even 3 good naps a day (1-2 hours each). She is now 15 months and she just wants to play and walk and run every waking moment but she still takes a good 1,5-2hr nap in the morning. Depending on how tired she is she has been known to have 3hr "naps" too:-) Unless there is something else that concerns you just keep giving opportunities to sleep and if it doesn't happen now it'll happen later...

Hi Mols, First of all there's nothing wrong with giving formula, our Dr who I trust fully after having been to many, has recomended I keep giving formula until DD is 2 since fresh milk is not as fortified as the formula is and so, depending on their diet, they may miss our on imprortant vitamins/minerals/etc if you switch entirely to fresh milk when they turn 1. He suggested we can still give a cup of fresh milk a day so she can get used to which we do very infrequently if I'm being honest but she does like it. With regards to the food, I wonder if you can try stopping purees and lumps alltogether and see how he responds. Since he's ok with finger food he may be fine for instance with a meatball or a nugget, or adult size pasta he can pick up and eat, or some home made pizza, vegetable wedges perhaps with sprinkled cheese on top etc, if you see where I'm going with this. He may just dislike the lumps or he may be assuming it's a puree because of the texture and then being unpleasantly surprised when a lump comes up:-) I give DD many things to try at restaurants, except of course very salty/spicy and she usually loves it. I also made fish cakes for her recently that she loved, not much of a recipe but if you want to try (as your DS could "hold" the cake and might enjoy) let me know and I'll post some more info.

I actually like the Quinny Buzz though it is hard to travel with, especially for flights. However, we've hardly used it since DD turned 12 months as she prefers going out for walks on her trike. I was recently debating what I would have done differently if I were to do it all over again and I think I probably would have bought a Maclaren XLR type stroller that goes flat for use from birth and is then a lighter and easier option when travelling, putting in an out of the car etc. I was never a fan of using the Quinny with the car seat as I don't think it's a good position for a baby to be in, so that functionalty was not imprortant to me.

IMO, if swim diapers didn't hold the pee they would have no reason to exist and we could just use normal diapers, or in fact no diapers, don't you think? This sounds wrong on so many levels and although I understand and appreciate that the need to be frugal is more pressing for some people, swim diapers are not that expensive and we don't exactly use 5 a day so I'm struggling to see how this makes any sense. And it certanly doesn't from a hygiene point of view....

To be fair the processing when one applies only for proof of citizenship can be very slow, they usually do advise it takes over a year. And it is not processed urgently as they would if you had applied for a passport and proof of citizenship because they know the child already has a passport hence is not stateless etc. Still, it's a murky process that could be improved and quite clearly the Consulate employees in Dubai should be fired and replaced by competent and helpful people. I was just watching a How I met your mother episode last night where they were joking that Canadians are polite even when they're upset;-) Wish that was true in the Dubai Consulate!!!

Quoting Kiwispiers: "Just buy a thousand bodysuits in cotton rib with envelope necks and matching yoga style pants or leggings and you will have a happy baby. Avoid pleats, gathers, buttons and zips." Great advice, loads of cotton bodysuits and I avoided ones with appliques and decorations depends how sensitive your baby's skin is but when they're that young I didn't want anything but the softest cotton material touching them. In winter here I used leggins with closed feet (ones that look like cotton tights:-) for a while but not sure it was necessary. Once spring came we transitioned to short sleeve onesies with leggings. I only used long sleeve onesies for sleep at night and never swaddled as DD would not take it. Around 4 months I discovered Grobags which worked very well till she was about 11 months and then she was getting frustrated that she couldn't move freely in them and we stopped. If you do buy them look for the lowest warmth, 1 tog or 1.5. Better be on the cold side than the warm side. I'd also suggest you get a room thermometer so that you can get used to what is a good temp over time an not need it anymore (if you buy a Grobag there is a thermometer that comes with it btw). Or a good monitor that displays the temperature, we used to have a Motorola that did that and it was brilliant but it couldn't handle DD's abuse and we now have a pretty useless but very expensive Avent. I only ever used a cotton hat when we would go for walks early in the morning in the winter, never in the house and most certainly not when sleeping. Hope this helps!

It has been 12 months since we applied and no word yet; Consulate here says they are not involved after we submit the docs and that they cannot help us to find out the status of our application. I think the general consensus is that the Consulate here s&%s beyond belief so I'm not suprised...in fact when we tried to apply the first time they told us to apply in the country where DD was born (not the UAE) which is in fact against the guidance issued by Canadian government and that if we applied from here it would have taken 3 years as opposed to that other country where it would have taken 1. Again a load of BS as all applications go to the same central processing center in Canada and once there they don't process differently if it comes from Dubai vs some other part of the world....ahhh, don't get me started!

As stated, only a Muslim man can marry a Christian woman in Dubai Courts and that is not a civil wedding, it is by all means a Muslim wedding. Even if both were Muslim and had done the book writing for instance at home, it would still have had to get attested (or whatever the correct term is) at Dubai Courts for the marriage to be valid. Bear in mind that they do insist on your father being there or brother. If that is not possibly you have to produce ducumentation that they are deceased or otherwise as to why they cannot attend. Perhaps check whether if they do a Power of Attorney type of doc for someone who can be there or an NOC type letter that they do consent to the marriage and they do "give you away" whether the Court will accept that.

Thanks for pointing that out Meagle, in fact many countries recommend rear facing till 4yrs of age (though not sure I'll take it that far). Bend legs is not an issue at all, unless of course your child complains. If your child is on the tall side look for a bigger seat, the BeSafe Izi would be a good option, much more leg room when rearfacing compared to the Dual Fix. No rear facing Britax is available for sale in Dubai (at least there wasn't 3 months ago when I was looking). As some of you (TDB?) may recall, I have a BeSafe and a Dual Fix, bought the Dual Fix from carseat.se and it was a huge hassle getting it delivered (out of stock, then Dubai Post decided there was no contact info on the box although there clearly was so they held it at Central Post office and nobody contacted us, etc) but it is a very nice seat and the swivel function is great. DD is a bit on the big side and I am concerned she will outgrow it fast (you can read my review if you search for "rear facing seats") so I've been toying with the idea of selling it but haven't decided yet. The only place I know where you can easily find it online is carseat.se but mothercare.uk and some other places may have it too.

I was somewhat turned off when I was told my hunsband needs to give me an NOC addressed to C...I....D allowing me to get the licence (as our tenancy contract is not in my name)...so I think as a matter of principle against all this big brotherism I will delay for another 4 years in case they come up with more reasonable legislation in the meantime:-)

Hi French Nath, don't delay weaning if he's interested, many people struggle to introduce it so you should consider yourself lucky! Just adjust the diet a bit and keep trying new things, you'll find a lot of opinions about whether you should stick to one thing for several days in case of allergies but unless what you give him is a known culprit for causing allergies I wouldn't be too concerned about that. And as Kiwi suggested, do try fruits, they are easier first foods than veg.

Hi Redrec, I think in our case it's simpler because she's early September so most schools suggest waiting a year plus some have a cutoff of Sept 15 so she wouldn't even be able to join in the year turning 3 even if we wanted that. I have asked the schools I am interested in/have applied to and they all suggested waiting to go to FS1 the September she will be turning 4, all except GEMS but I'm not that keen on GEMS to be honest. This applies to BC schools, i have also checked American and there it is different because the curriculum structure is also different. If I were you I would base my decision on what the school you want is telling you; and closer to the date, if you get options e.g. between schools wanting her to start at 3 and those wanting her to start at 4 then you can pick depending on the maturity of your DD then. I'm just figuring this out as I go, so no expert by any means!

Hi SandstarQuen, congrats and hope the little ones are doing great! Perhaps some of the ladies with twins can provide more revelant suggestions but in the meantime, you could try reaching out to City and American hospitals who I am sure have neonatologists on staff and you could assess their profiles/ask for references on this forum. Alternatively I would probably reach out to a very experienced Dr who could recommend someone if they cannot take on the care themselves. Check out Dr Keith Nicholl (the clinic is under his name); he is very experienced and I believe he has been in Dubai for decades so if cant help you I'm sure he could suggest a few other Drs.

Hi French Nath, carrot is a big culprit for constipation; if you see any signs of that, stop it. It's been a while since I was researching these things but I believe sweet potato or pumpkin (that may be considered similar to texture and taste to carrot) are ok as alternatives. Are you giving fruit? It may be easier to just do fruit for a few days and see if there's a difference. Again, if you suspect constipation at all, avoid banana and apple but pear is great and i think also peaches, plums, berries.

Hello Dubai 13, I know Blossom ELC takes kids until they are 6 years old; there must be several other places i"m sure. Also check Hummingbird ELC, I think they may have the option. What is your location, so we don't recommend places that are too far away? DD is an early September baby and we're planning to keep her out of school for another year; although there are schools that would have happily taken her at just 3. I have noticed here in Dubai some cultures (if I could use the term broadly) are much more in favour of starting early, they almost see it as proof their child is smarter and more capable. I don't subcribe to this view and to be honest I want my child to enjoy each stage of her life to the fullest and to be a toddler for just that little bit longer:-)

Just a note that Dr George is not a N9NE anymore, he is now at Genesis which I believe it is his own clinic. [url=http://www.genesis-dubai.com/about-us-2/doctors-dr-george/'>link[/url'> I also highly recommend him although I cannot compare to FMC.

Hi Janatks, I've had one before and I know you can worry yourself sick while waiting for the results. In my experience, both times I went to a Dr in the US and here with such concerns they did a mamogram but also an ultrasound as that is apparently more accurate but the combination of the two is ideal. If they do tell you anything other than that it's all clear perhaps ask the Dr whether an ultrasound may be a good idea. There are so many things though that could have caused the technician to do a double take and most of those would not have meant anything bad so don't overthink it, just do the follow up to put your mind to rest. Good luck!

Hi YorkieScott, I don't have direct experience of either but I know Blossom Village, Willow and Inspire as mentioned by Sourskittleashnut come highly recommended on this forum. DD is a Blossom ELC (a different branch to Blossom Village) but I must say after having experienced Hummingbird and Children's Oasis, we are very impressed with Blossom. Very well managed, keen, warm teachers and staff, great activities etc, DD does not want to leave when we go to pick up. I imagine the other Blossom branches must have similarities at least in terms of the comapny ethos but I cannot vouch for that of course. Hope this helps a bit.
