Thank you all so much, unfortunately I wasn't able to find ready made formula where I am (not in Dubai) but will keep checking. I'll also try to ask airport security in advance whether they would let me through with water in the bottles so that I can plan accordingly. Fingers crossed it'll go well!

Thank you both, this may be a daft question, but wouldn't pre-prepared formula need to be refrigerated? I keep reading all this scary "sterilize everything all the time" advice and unsure as to how to go about it...

Hi Redleaf, I'm about to go through the same process and based on the documents the Consulate gave us and my research online with Canada government (don't recall the website now), I believe Vagabonda is correct and that the parent is considered the applicant. Hopefully you won't have issues, best of luck and pls update if you can as I'll be following suit soon!

Hey Khatoon, I've been a member for many years and to be honest the past couple of years I haven't been using it at all. It used to be quite useful as a community but then they opened it up too much and it became a bit silly, more Facebook like. Add to this that unfortunately in the region I find it to be even lower quality, largely due to the high number of party girls (if you know what I mean) and desperate guys looking for brides. Having said that, if you want, post your email and I can invite you (assuming I remember my log in details!).

I was also told I was borderline when I did the test, although my results were within the normal ranges. I went to an endocrinologist who saw my results, asked about by family history and told me that I was not borderline and not to worry. He did suggest that I monitor my own glucose levels if possible, with one for those little appliances they sell at pharmacies. The point being that one GTT test does not on its own prove or disprove anything and that the best way to be sure there is no issue is to monitor your levels twice a day over a period of say, a week, without changing your diet, in order to see if there is an increasing trend in your glucose level which might indicate intolerance. I was advised to monitor the morning fasting level (as soon as you wake up, before you have anything to eat or drink) and then 2 hours after dinner. If after a week you see results that are consistently increasing or that are outside normal ranges you should first follow up with a dietician who can design a special diet for you as in practically every case this solves the problem. No need to change your diet in the meantime, unless of course you know your diet is inappropriate (lots of sweets, sodas, etc) but from what you're saying it doesn't sound like that's the case.

It seems we have fewer choices each year :-( I know it's such a shame.... Seriously? Why is this such a shame? Having to eat at home for 30 days between sunrise and sunset is not exactly a hardship. That's a bit harsh MF:-) For those who work it's actually quite hard if there are no places open near work, since the alternative for me for instance is to bring my own food and eat it with tens of other people in a stinky little "break out room". I am very grateful for the DIFC options and I hope there will be as many this year as there were last year for Ramadan.

Def not Athens, it's not a place for a summer vacation, other than staying a night or so to go to the Acropolis, a couple of museums and that's it. The islands are amazing but not all are family friendly and some are quite expensive. There are too many though to make a recommendation without knowing your friend and what her priorities are. Since she's going with her kids it may be a good idea to check with travel agents for packages in islands (flights or boat tickets, hotel, half or full board, activities for the children). Also anytime between now and August 15 or so will be very expensive, if she can go just after August 15 she'll have better luck with prices.

Pretty much all the places at the DIFC are open (usually), and there are plenty e.g. More Cafe, Cafe Nero, Bateel, Dome, Starbucks, GBK, Noodle House, Joga, etc. I think most of the restaurants are open too, e.g. Caramel, Petite Maison, etc. Will report back next week once it starts....

Hey Hilsbils, we've had the same issue with our neighbours in the Marina for a while now, and perhaps it's just a coincidence but the kids are the same nationality as what you mentioned. I guess you may have some hope if your building management is good and willing to get involved, otherwise it's a lost cause unfortunately...

Thank you both, seems there a few different options and I would need to find the best one for me. I did it in the afternoon yesterday coming back in half an hour using Al Ain Rd to Emirates Rd. Now if we could find a way to magically transport our cars past the roundabout....need to put on my magic hat:-)

Hello JPS1, don't despair! If they can't fix your appointment with Dr. Britt there are plenty of doctors from outside clinics who have delivery rights at City and who could assist you. City might even have a list they could share with you, though you might need to get lucky and talk to the right person to get that. I will not be delivering in Dubai but both doctors at the clinic I go to deliver at City and the clinic is a block away from the hospital. It's called N9NE medical and the doctors are Dr George and Dr Amir-I've read many positive comments about both but as I said I won't be delivering here so I can't be any more informative at this point. Another way to find out would be to call the well known clinics and ask then if any of their OBGyns deliver at City and take it from there. Best of luck!

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well? Just wondering, has anyone had a 3D scan yet and if so at how many weeks? My next scan is at 32 weeks but i'm wondering if i should have a 3D scan before this? Also, is anyone else planing to deliver at American Hospital? Big Blue - i'm with you on the heat!! Its going to be a long summer.... Hi LT, from 12 weeks onwards I've always had a 3D scan along with the usual scan, sometimes of course depending on the position of the baby you can't get a clear view so it's not much use (it needs space around the baby for the ultrasound to generate an image, so if the baby's head is stuck against your uterus for instance, you will probably just see a mass of something that won't make any sense). My understanding is that it's used mostly for a visual representation of the baby and so that you can get a "photo" of the baby's face if the position allows, I am not aware of it having any other medical purpose so I wouldn't be too worried about when or whether to do it if I were you.

Hello ladies, I'm seeking your advice as to the average commute times in and out of the Green Community in DIP. I would be heading from GC East (the original development) to the DIFC or thereabouts around 7:30am and returning around 6pm. If any of you have a similiar commute could you please let me know how long it usually takes you and what is your preferred route (I assume Emirates Rd?). If you don't have experience of a similar commute could you at least give me an idea of how bad (or not) it is getting in and out of the development i.e. until you clear the GC roundabout? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Thanks UAE2012, It does sound like skin streching; I've also had a blue-ish circle around my belly button lately and I think it is veins close to the surface, probably being pushed by the growing baby. I'm actually stuggling a bit with the heat lately, makes me feel so exausted and about to faint most of the time. I need to find a way to stay home more! Hope you're better now:-)

Hi UAE2012, Maybe what I had was slightly different, but early on (around 16 weeks) I had this combination of burning sensation and sharp pain that wouldn't go away one evening. I was feeling it at the top part of my belly, in the center. I ended up in an emargency room and was told that it was most likely a pocket of gas that was causing all the pain. They gave me some paracetamol and an antacid and within an hour I was much better. If you've had it for a while though it may be something different. Hope you'll feel better soon.

Hey Pilates mama, I'd suggest you check with your Dr. It's probably nothing, but in the third trimester it can also be a sign of a condition that I believe is linked to the liver, I can't remember the name now but will look it up and will re-post.

As has been said previously you can only marry at Dubai Courts if your fiance or both of you are Muslim. Note that if your fiance is Muslim and you are not, you will only be allowed to marry if you are Christian, no other religion is accepted (or I should say 'tolerated') for marriage purposes. Most countries, meaning your home country whichever that is, have requirements as to how long you have to register a marriage performed abroad e.g. 3 months, 6 months, etc and penalties may apply if you delay the registration. In reality, if you do not register the marriage in your home country you would still be consider unmarried, however strictly speaking it would be illegal (false statements regarding marital status and what not. But unless I misunderstood, neither of you is Muslim, so the Courts option would not be available to you in any case.

Wish this post was there before I bought mine :(. Though I love my Quinny as its great for our daily walks, I am getting increasingly annoyed by how heavy it is to lift in and out of the car boot! Also, somehow the clasp always comes undone when I am trying to get it out, half the times I unload an open stroller! I thought it was me who was doing something wrong..... but I guess it's just the design. DS still loves it though, so that's a saving grace. And it is very easy to maneuvre... thank God Hey there, I don't have a quinny but I've been doing some research on it and found comments on Amazon indicating that there is a security latch or something that you need to engage so that it doesn't open as you try to take it out of the trunk. The person commenting was suggesting reading in detail the instructions manual, it may be obvious, but perhaps check again in case that's something that may help you!

Hello..i am very happy to join your blog, very helpful ! I am 9 weeks pregnant and new in Dubai. So excited for my first baby , but same time, anxious :(.. My Gyn. in the city hospital recommended me to do a scan at my 12 weeks at Fetal medicine center , which is located before the city hospital. She told me it aims to check some abnormalities as down syndrome babies..is it a normal scan that every pregnant will do it? anyone have previous experience at FETAL MEDICINE CENTER ? any recommendations? what to expect? thanksss all...need your help.. Hi there, just to add that you shouldn't worry about the scan at all, it's just a more detailed external ultrasound and a blood test as mentioned by some of the ladies. If the results indicate a high risk then you would be advised of further tests you can do, but then it becomes a question of whether the result would change the outcome of your pregnancy, as Lilli34 mentioned and that is such a personal matter that I don't think there is a right or wrong answer. If you have a hard time getting an appointment at FMC there is also N9NE medical center a block away from City hospital where you can do it; I believe some City doctors refer patients there too, you may want to check. Don't worry about it too much, it's more of a formality these days. Enjoy your pregnancy!

Congratulationssss mel_uk and good luck for your first visit and for HAVING TWINS (beautiful surprise!!!!!). Big blue...surprised by the detailed infos you have about Dr. Georges,Interesting!! Even his personnal nurse wont have such details..:) Half of what I've said is a personal opinion on his demeanor etc, and the other half I think any half observing patient would be able to tell you (e.g. quality of equipment) so I'm not sure why you consider this detailed info that his personal nurse wouldn't have, but at the end of day if it ends up being helpful to somebody, that's good enough for me:-)

Hi Mel and congrats! I've been seeing Dr George since week 8 and I'm now almost week 22 so I've had several scans with him, including the 12 week NT scan and the 20 week morphology (some call it anomaly) scan. I am very happy with his level of attention, detail and with his demeanor in general. He is reasonable and doesn't scare you with minor things unecessarily. I'd also like to point out that after having been to 3 different doctors, his equipment (ultrasound machine) is by far the best. He is no longer at AH, he now practices at a private clinic called N9NE in healthcare city and he delivers at City Hospital. In fact I believe some doctors from City refer their patients to him for the 12 and 20 week scans. I am not high risk but I know that is his area of specialty so you should be in good hands if you do decide to see him. Best of luck!

Hello ladies, after 3.5 terrible months with constant nausea and almost daily vomiting I thought I'd share with you my experience in case it helps anybody else. Basically, if you are experiencing vomiting after your 16th week, I would suggest you look for secondary (to the pregnancy) causes, typically related to your stomach. A prolonged period of vomiting can cause stomach issues such as ulcers so if you find yourself in that situation ask your doctor to try to treat the stomach (e.g. with antacids) rather than the vomiting. It worked great for me and I'm finally starting to feel human again!

It's quite hard finding decent work wear in Dubai when pregnant, but I've managed to find a couple of pairs of trousers at Destination Maternity and my saviour has been Debenhams. Not a maternity range, but some brands that have nice loose tops and loose dresses or dressed made from elastic materials, I've got a lot of stuff from Wallis for example and they're nice enough that I would continue to wear after the pregancy if possible. Check it out...

Don't worry yourself sick....just avoid the obvious things e.g. unpasterized dairy products, undercooked meat/fish/eggs, a couple of essential oils that supposedly can cause contractions (I don't recall which ones right now but if you do a quick search on google you'll find out easily, I think clove was one of them). I try to use as simple as possible products on my belly (e.g. Neal's Yard tummy balm as opposed to bio oil or mustela for example) but don't bother much otherwise. I also have my hair dyed and my doctor told me there is no risk whatsoever unless I have an open wound or something on my head in which case it's not advisable. All the best!

Hi Redleaf, yes, it's the passport I'm worried about, I wouldn't want the baby to be here for a year without travel documents... If what you're describing is the case then it should be fine. I don't know why they can't be a bit more helpful at the Embassy, it took us three visits to even get the citizenship application so I was getting worried about what's to follow! Thank you so much for the info.

In my opinion traffic in the Marina is terrible and after 3 years of living there I can't wait to move. The fist year I lived on the Marina Walk side (near where the Grosvenor House is, to give you an idea) and that was a much quieter area, however if you work, traffic into the area in the afternoons/evenings is horrendous. Just drive by one evening between 6 and 9 and you'll see what I mean. I am now closer to the 'center' of the marina, between JBR and the Yacht Club and it is honestly horrible. Although I live on a very high floor, not directly facing the road, in the evenings and weekends there isn't one moment of quiet...honking cars, accelerating motorbikes (especially Harleys are the worst), police cars, super cars showing off in a strech of 5 meters...it's never ending, even at 2am you have a lot of noise. And in the weekends (Thu and Fri) unless you have easy access to SZR and leave to go to some other area, don't even think about driving somewhere in the Marina, it's either walking or stay at home. A couple of weeks ago we drove from our place (right in the middle of the marina) to Habtoor Grand and it took us one hour door to door, for something that should have taken 10 minutes, just to give you an idea. At the end of the day it depends what you want and what your priorities are, but think about it carefully if noise or traffic is a consideration. Hello UAE2012! You're not alone, I'm joining you on the September due group (though I may also end up being August, who knows....). I'm 16 weeks and the nausea and vomiting is just starting to get better, I'd love to get my life back, I feel like I've been sick for 3 months now and it's very hard dealing with work on top of everything else. Whining aside, very happy about it though and thankfully everything looks fine from a medical point of view which is the most important thing. Anyway, good luck to you, hope all is going well!

I also second the Park Hyatt Dubai, it's beautiful, serene, not over the top like some other 5 star hotels in Dubai and quite private in the sense that you won't have random tourists wondering through your ceremony. We had our wedding there and although it was a year ago and prices may have changed, we had 80 guests, two outdoors locations (Fountain garden for blessing and cocktails and Palm Garden for dinner/dancing), free flowing alcohol (but only had champagne for the cocktail hour), great food and it cost us about 60K. This included flowers for the tables, wedding cake, overnight stay in a suite. We incurred some extra costs for DJ hire, light arrangements (you need it there if outdoors, and to be honest it is great decoration) and some additional flower arrangements we requested that I would say alltogether came to another 10-12K. Just to note that if you have it outdoors there is a cut off of around midnight for noise purposes. This and the fact that about one third of our guests didn't drink alcohol kept the alcohol budget reasonable (I think it came to 17K alltogether) but as I said, we had Moet champagne after the blessing and then free flowing wines and open bar from 7pm to midnight. It was really lovely and everybody had a great time. One last thing, negotiate hard, they had initially quoted me 80K for venue and food only, and I got that cut to 40K, so there's hope!

You can only get married at the Courts here if your husband to be or both of you are Muslim; and that is not a civil wedding by any means, it is a religious wedding in accordance with Sharia law but in any case it is irrelevant in your case. Tuesday has a point, some of the "big" embassies may offer some civil a wedding option but they do not encourage it. Better call them an ask but they will most likely advise you to get married at a church here. IMO it would be much simpler if you got married in SA and then came here as a married couple, I think it would be a much faster process to then sponsor your husband (same outcome, but I believe getting all the paperowork done to get married here and then registering the wedding here will take longer). However there are guidelines about sponsorship that relate primarily to your salary level, I believe you can find this info online easily, maybe even at dubai.ae. Good luck!

I was so glad to read everybody's comments on this thread, especially comments from parents stating how hard they try to raise their kids in a way that would minimize such unfortunate behaviours, whether at home or in public. Now as some have said, a lot depends on the age of the child and the circumstances...for instance if I have a screaming baby a couple of rows ahead of me during a flight I am obviously not thrilled, but if I see that the mother/father is doing their best to calm the baby down and it is not working then I just think poor parents, they must be having such a hard time, raise the volume on my headset and not to let it get to me. However, having lived for more than a year next to the family with the kids from ****, I have little sympathy for parents who let their kids be demons, especially when they are no longer babies, but rather 4-5 years of age and I blame them 100% for the way their kids behave. I see many mothers like my neighbor who once they've had enough they just send the kids out with the nanny/maid who of course cannot do anything to discipline them, so that they can bother everybody other than her. Same thing at restaurants, they ship the kids out with a maid or two and they sit as far away as possible enjoying their meal without a care in the world while other diners have to suffer their intolerable, misbehaved, screaming kids. In those cases not only i glance at them in a judgemental way, but in the past we've asked the manager to talk to them and tell them to keep their kids under control and in many cases it's worked. And at the risk of offending some people, based on my experience in Dubai, i would say that 80% of the time it is not the 'Western" families causing havoc.

Marina Promenade is an Emaar development of six blue glass towers, right across the water from the Yacht Club (so it's between the artificial side of the Marina and the natural beach where JBR is). Pretend you are driving in front of Marina Mall, with the mall on your right hand side, keep driving on Emaar Drive, past the traffic light, past the metro station near Horizon Tower, and then turn right after Almaya (not the sharp right, the wider right) which will take you over the bridge; turn right at the traffic light, you will have a construction site to your right, then a building whose name I don't remember, then the Point and after you pass it you turn right to a go down a roundabout by the water, and get to the Promenade visitor parking. Baker and Spice is by the water, after Arz Lubnan and Costa Coffee. Bear in mind it's hard to find a spot in the parking-If you get desperate just park at the JBR public parking lot and walk back.

Do you mean Baker & Spice? If so, it's not at Marina Mall, it's at Marina Promenade. The menu is much shorter than the one at Souk al Bahar and the prices as inflated as always. Service seems to be experiencing teething problems.

If the weather is good (clear day, not very windy) definitely do a helicopter tour-there are 3 or 4 rental places at the Waterfront. If it's just a couple of people choose the small bubble-like helicopter, it's much better for visibility (and apparently safer) than the bigger ones. For me, although I was scared to do it and it took a lot of convincing from DH, it ended up being the best experience of the whole trip and in fact one of the most memorable experiences ever. I also really enjoyed the Botanical Garden if you like beeing in nature in a controlled environment with amazing flora. Stellenbosch and Franschoek are great too and in my opinion they have much better food and cheaper wine than Cape Town (at least food that tourist would manage to discover!). If you rent a car, Stellenbosch is something like 45 mins from Cape Town, very easy to get to.

Bloomingdales do and their service is excellent; they also allow a mix of gifts and gift certificates which is great and they print lovely registry cards your friend can provide with the invitations if she wishes. Other stores also do them if you ask (e.g. Tavola, Jashanmal, etc) but not as professionally.
