I got mine done at motorcity medicentre and got the certificate and they did ask for it when we arrived! Try the Diamox before you go so you know what to expect. We took a full one and the guide advised us to just take half and we were fine. I took a hot water bottle and so glad I did!

Thanks all so much, looking into those options now... Bird, did you take all the ones I mentioned? Why were you advised not to take malaria tabs? Did you take Diamox? Sorry so many qs but I have no idea about this stuff, this is our first high altitude trek/climb! No worries.Yes I took Diamox. We took malaria tablets with us but the guide said they could have bad side effects with Diamox and you're only at risk at low altitude. Just coverup and wear repellent if necessary. We didn't see one mozzie on the climb just at the hotel after. Didn't have any other jabs. Start them in plenty of time, one of the hep ones has two separate doses if I remember rightly.

I had mine done at medicentre motorcity. City hospital is expensive generally. Just ring round a few clinics. I had measles jab at school and didn't have it again for Kili. Just one of the hepatitis can't remember which but not the common one. I also had yellow fever which is compulsory. I didn't take malaria tablets either, was advised not to.

European Belhoul Hospital does it. Its a small but very clean and professional hospital. They have very affordable packages. I would give my highest recommendation as both my sons had their procedure done there by Dr.Wasfi Jaouni. Hes an Egyptian surgeon and president of the emirates pediatric surgeon society. You have to go for a consultation with him to get a quote for the hospital and his services. Tel:2950660. I have recommended him on previous threads too. edited by Appletiser on 02/05/2012 Hi Appletiser, I know this is an old thread. Could you tell me how old your sons were and what the after care was like. I heard that it's not very good i.e. inadequate pain relief. How long did they take to recover? Their aftercare was great. Nurses were very helpful and there was plenty of pain relief. He was up and playing about 4 hours after the operation. The first 2 hours he looked a bit drowsy from the anesthesia but he never really had bad pain just uncomfortableness. Doctor also gave antibiotic ointment to put on to make double sure nothing goes wrong. Thanks. And how old was he?

Went for lunch and really enjoyed it. Dishes are put on the table to share which could be romantic! Seating is close together so maybe not so intimate. I think I'd prefer it for lunch. It's a lovely airy, bright dining space quite lively. I like Vu's for an intimate quiet dining experience.

OK Eventually we went and had a look at Dubai Karate Centre and it seems well run but my DS flipped as his current sham-of-a Karate class (held Tuesdays in Jess Jumeirah) gave him a brown-white belt but in the DKC EVERYTHING was different (despite also being Shotokan Karate) and the main guy was SHOCKED that my DS had that colour belt but had only been taught 1-2 Katas in almost 3 (!!!) years. He explained for this belt he should have been taught at LEAST 6 katas (they are the little routines they do). So my DS was reduced to tears as they guy said he could only accept him as a white belt - total beginner. DS (9 yrs old) now wants to quit Karate altogether and is so so disappointed. Angry at myself for not researching this better before! But his company came to his school so not really thought about it. Super angry at his current class teacher and don't know what to do. So hard for you and your little one! Maybe think of an incentive for him, a reward or sweetener if he starts? At least this group does it properly instead of just handing out the belts! My son went to the same club by the sounds of it but at the ranches, Adel? In charge? We left after my son then 5/6 was floored by an unruly 15 year old who pushed my sons face into the carpet grazing his face. Such a badly run club. I don't know why the school continues to use them.

As you can see from my amount of posts I don't comment that often but this is turning into such a silly argument that I feel the need to. Surely the whole point is that regardless of whether you are in a car, on a bike, riding a motorbike, walking, etc, it is about common sense, consideration for the other users on the road and avoiding any form of collision. Of course you need to be aware of the potential implications of an accident from a legal perspective but should you not be more concerned about not taking the life of another human being or risking your own! I for one think that the way that all types of people use the roads is beyond a joke and think that a little common courtesy and consideration would make a world of difference. Oh and FYI I do live in the Ranches. Yes you're right. Thers no hope though when some people think they own the roads and make sweeping statements about a particular road user. It is about obeying the road rules and being courteous.

Bird, DH just confirmed that the driver was arrested and spent 2 nights behind bars but was let off as the cyclist was not allowed to ride in that area... Just like emaar's community rules state :( Either way, it's not the time for a 'who's right' but we should all remember, that cycling is not permitted on main roads n moreover it's the cyclist who should be aware of other motorist as UAE is not like other countries where speed limits are much lower... Cyclist are putting the public at risk!!!! Are you talking about the truck driver at Global village who killed your husband's colleague? I'm talking about the residential roads of Arabian Ranches. According to the Emaar rules the speed limit is 40km on the main roads around the communities and 25km through communities. That's about 25mph and 15mph. Much slower and you'd stop. If it's not a time for who's right then why do you keep saying that cyclists should be aware of motorists and that they are putting the public at risk? Just read that again out loud and tell everyone you meet. Better advise all the cyclists in the Ranches including all the children that cycle to school that they are breaking the law and putting the public at risk. In fact better tell the school! And Emaar for putting cycle racks outside the community shops! Oh and the security guards employed by Emaar not to use their bikes. edited by Bird on 12/11/2012 edited by Bird on 12/11/2012

The driver that hit me is in prison, fact, and the sergeant explained why. Are you able to share that reason with us, please, Bird? (If not, it is understood no offence meant and none taken.) Just the fact that he violated traffic rules. I knew what he had done and so did he, it was reassuring that the sergeant reiterated it.

I believe ecochic will find her statement: [b'>Dubai government rule - if a cyclist dies on the roads, the vehicle driver is not imprisoned as the cyclist is at fault for not following the law.[/b'> is not as categorical as she thinks. Dubai FAQ says: "UAE Federal Law No. 21 of 1995, and Ministerial Order No. 130 of 1997 cover the use of bicycles in the UAE. Article 16 of the law says that cyclists should ride on the right of the road, should not ride on the footpath, should use cycle tracks where available, and are not permitted to ride on[b'> main roads[/b'>." Roads inside compounds such as AR are hardly main roads. edited by simpleasabc on 11/11/2012 Why have so many bicyclists been run over lately? Partly, it is because the sport is gaining popularity here in Dubai - so more riders. But I think there is a serious lack of education here on the part of both drivers and riders on how to share the road. I know CycleSafe exists and there are plans from the Cycle Hub to do education - but until something changes we are all at risk. Sorry to burst your bubble :) Earlier this year an expat from my DH company died on the spot in the early hours riding his cycle at global village. Cops on the scene rushed him to nearby hospitals where they declared him dead. The company and family were informed that any accidents caused by vehicles to bikes n the riders were not the fault of the driver and the driver were not liable for any punishment or fines.... Sad but true... They blamed the cyclist n let the driver scot free.... Driver was an Asian pick up trucker... Even riding on the main community roads (not internal after gates) face the same... As told by the cops.... Circulars were issued to all staff... May have been true in this case, bit difficult to defend yourself when you're dead? The driver that hit me is in prison, fact, and the sergeant explained why.

I'm sorry about your accident Bird and I'm glad the driver got punished. Back2Blonde, the paths in the Ranches aren't dedicated cycle paths hence there are also walkers/runners on them. If someone is going for a serious exercise/training ride then there is simply to much foot traffic on the paths to achieve this. Cyclists can't go too fast on the paths without risking hitting a pedestrian. So they are fine for casual slow biking and great for children but that's about it. For my own stance, I hate biking (hat hair, yuck) and find cyclists on the roads a pain in the butt and yet another hazard to watch out for. BUT, I do respect that they have as much right to be on the road as me in my car and treat them accordingly. Thanks Daza and Feemick. Not as bad as the cyclist last night.

We stayed at the Swissotel Clarke Quay a couple of years ago and it was perfect with young children. Not sure on their room policy as we booked an adjoining room for the children but you could check. http://www.swissotel.com/hotels/singapore-merchant-court/ Looks so lush but again, they have a maximum occupancy of 2 people and if we book 2 rooms we'd be WELL over the budget...thanks though Mai Tai, most hotels say only 2 adults but we've found when you're there there's often a sofa bed or they'll bring in another bed?

Roads are not meant for Cyclist in this country... don't blame the reckless drivers... way too many times I have seen cyclists who take up the entire lane at the ranches and cars have to wait till the second lane gets free so they can over take.... no amount of honking will make them move towards the side, it's just not right they cycle on the main road as it's UNSAFE and no amount of safety gear can safe a life. if you can't cycle on the bricked pavement (like so many other do) drive to jumeriah beach or other places which offer cycle lanes for long distances and stop causing problems with the residents who are returning home. Dubai government rule - if a cyclist dies on the roads, the vehicle driver is not imprisoned as the cyclist is at fault for not following the law. I was about to get all uppity with you about roads not being meant for cyclists in this country, but then read your last sentence. :( :\: Thank you, I've learned something new today. Along with the fact a tenant is at fault for trusting a contract concluded with an agent appointed by the landlord. ;)

I saw it too. If you are going to ride, you need to wear a reflective vest! A few minutes after I saw the poor person lying on the ground, another cyclist was almost hit because he was too dark to see. The little reflectors on your bike just aren't enough. It happened to me in broad daylight. Nothing will save you from reckless drivers. Wendopia, tell me not to! Not worth it. The driver who hit me is in prison because he broke the road rules by speeding out of a junction. How can this be the cyclist's fault? There is no rule against cyclists on the road. Motorists don't own the roads. Why is it unsafe on the roads? Because of speeding honking cars that have no consideration for other people. We're talking about a RESIDENTIAL area here not Emirates road.

Of course they are wide enough. If the road is wide enough for a car how can it not be wide enough for a bike?! Cars should give as wide a berth to bikes as they do cars. Cars do not own the roads despite what many think. Stop blaming the cyclists. If cars don't stop at junctions/roundabouts and LOOK before they fly out you could be wearing a neon pink outfit it won't make any difference. Im talking abut broad daylight!! I'm afraid cars and bikes do not coexist peacefully around the world. Look at Bradley Wiggins and his coach both in accidents last week. I didn't say they co-exist peacefully but they do co-exist. Cars and other cars don't manage to co-exist peacefully on the roads let alone cars and bikes. My point was that I disagree with the knee jerk reaction to an accident being that people should not cycle on the roads in the Ranches. What if a pedestrian gets hit, ban pedestrians? Or two cars have an accident, ban cars? When I was at school a friend was killed whilst out on his bike. It was his fault and a moment's inattention cost him his life. It was a tragic, tragic accident but no one, not even the driver who hit him suggested for a moment that bikes should be banned from the roads. As unfortunate as they are, accidents are going to happen and the answer is not banning anything.[/quote I get your point Daza. I am biased as I was hit by someone who didn't stop/look and I'm very lucky that it wasn't worse. It was the most frightening and painful experience and not worth the risk. I'm advising/suggesting cyclists stay off the roads, not that they're banned, because no matter how careful you are you can't predict the stupidity of drivers who don't abide by basic road rules.

I have a very different opinion, the Ranches is for residents only not for any non resident to pop along, park up outside on the sand and use our facilities. As a paying landlord and tenant of maintenance charges i dont see why people should think they can just come along and use the cycle tracks and paths to train on when they dont live there. The accident last night involved a resident of the Ranches but time and time again i see a large number of bikes racing round the Ranches on their speed bikes. Its not the right place for this kind of activity. He is in a serious condition with a broken back, ribs, nose etc. Please guys, find somewhere else more safe that you are entitled to use. Well I'm a resident hit by a taxi driver who obviously doesn't live in the ranches. Whether you're a resident or not doesn't excuse reckless driving. Time and time again I see people drive their cars at speed round the ranches, it's not the place for that is it? It's residential. I should be able to ride my bike around the ranches for exercise or just to get somewhere but I never will again now because of a reckless driver who thankfully is in prison.

The roads in the Ranches are plenty big enough for cars and cyclists if everyone would just show a bit more consideration for other road users. Cyclists need to make sure they are visible and follow the road rules and cars need to slow down and take more care. To ban bikes from the roads is ridiculous, having an active community is a good thing and one of the things I love about the Ranches. Cars and bikes manage to co-exist on much smaller roads the world over, are Ranches residents really so inconsiderate that it's not possible here? I hope all involved in the accident this morning are ok. Of course they are wide enough. If the road is wide enough for a car how can it not be wide enough for a bike?! I remember asking them not to put salt and vinegar on as I would put it on at home so thry wouldn't get soggy and the Filipino lady told me I should put it on straight away that's how you do it! Sorry, I'm the customer and I'm British don't tell me how to have my f and p! Half chips this week from the fish and chip room and they were very good. Carters do a good fish and chips too.

We have been watching over the months, whilst going horse riding to EEC, being built...what a great idea achieved! It really is.....with so many things that stalled and failed here with the recession, spending even a little on a cycle path could have been a non-starter. Thankfully they did it and the number of people that ride on weekends, be it competitive or social, is fantastic. Try it....you'll like it! (what was that commercial?) There are some quite high profile local riders which helps.

We stayed at The Andaman which is the best location on the island in my opinion. It shares a beach with the Datai and is rated in the top 10 beaches/bays in the world. You are in the rainforest and there's plenty of wildlife. If you want to explore you can hire a car but there is nowhere other than The Datai to walk to from here. If you want to just chill that's fine. There isn't loads to do on the island anyway. The service is slow/island style but always with a smile! Don't expect the service you get in Dubai. Can't fault the Hilton KL which mirrors the Meridien I think? Awesome breakfast and great pool area if you need to chill.

When I joined a company here, if you left within 6 months you had to pay back the cost of the visa - around 6,000dhs! Several of my colleagues ended up having to have this deducted out of their final salary so yes, it does apply in some companies under Labour Law and was just a fact of leaving - no one disputed it. The fact is, as an employer, there are considerable costs associated with hiring people and this needs to be understood by the employee. You can't just come and go when you are under someone's sponsorship without having to account for the significant costs, time and paperwork they have undertaken to bring you on board. Frankly I am shocked at all the posters here who claim holding the passport is unlawful / accept the loss etc. Yes it's not ideal to have someone working for you who doesn't want to be there (after yesterday's meat stamping thread), but at the same time, she is an adult and must pay the consequence of breaking her legally binding contract. If I sign up to a loan, I must accept the Ts and Cs of paying it off early; if I sign an 18 month agreement with Du, there are consequences for breaking it early etc etc. As a sponsor, you pay for someone to be contractually bound to work for you for 1 year, at the end of which you send them home if they don't renew. You don't pay for them to job hunt on your watch, interview on your time while living in this country under your cost, go behind your back, and have a new visa sorted unbeknownst to you! The Human Rights brigade will always come out on threads like this but let's be honest- the maid has not played fair, she has lied, she has been brazen and she is clearly not stupid. No one likes to be played so why should she get away with it? Completely agree! One posting we had we had to stay for two years and if we left before that time we had to pay the relocation costs and visa costs which we couldn't afford to do and we stayed. You honour the contract or pay the consequences. Why should you have to foot the bill? They need to take responsibility.
