We had a family holiday there last August and were really lucky to have beautiful sunny warm weather most of the time. Stayed on the V&A waterfront in a beautiful apartment then took 10 days to drive the spectacular Garden Route. highly recommend it all. If you are going to Cape Town you can book Table Mountain and Robben Island tickets in advance which is definitely the best thing to do to avoid queues.

For a more authentic experience look for traditional ryokans to stay in. We took the kids when they were young and stayed in some lovely old buildings. Not five star all mod cons but perfectly comfortable (even on the tatami flooring with bean pillows!) and so much more interesting than a western style hotel. We travelled all over with the rail pass, really worth doing if only to experience how fantastically efficient and clean the system is. Went to a local baths in Kyoto (think I found it through Lonely Planet) where you dip in and out of different pools and scrub yourself down, great experience and one all of us remembered. Definitely check out the young funky punky Japanese in Tokyo, they assemble near a particular train station (forget the name but on the metro system). It was one of the best holidays we ever had, do hope you enjoy it

Is there anyone out there who can cook fabulous Indian food who would be willing to teach my two boys a few dishes over the next few months on a weekly basis? Just looking for 1-2 hours per week. They need a skill and this is a skill that would greatly benefit me!

Sorry - I'm no help at all but also need some information. Think there is now a problem bringing a new Fillipina in to the country? But is it OK to employ someone already here - either from another family or someone on a tourist visa? Has anyone done it recently and what are the new fees? I'm reading that some people have been charged up to 14,000 dhs to process the visa? All information gratefully received thanks.

I had one done at the American Hospital here in Dubai and it was easy. Left foot so I could drive again within a couple of days and just wore the special boot thing for 2 weeks. Had very little pain at all and it has healed well and looks a lot better than before. I was surprised it was so easy.

Or you can get the fabulous view that the Peninsula offers at a fraction of the price next door at the YMCA salisbury road. Clean and affordable. Hong Kong is extremely safe but busy. Must go on the Peak Tram, Star Ferry and HK island trams. Can go a long way and get a great view of the city without the hassle of walking it. Kowloon park very close to YMCA and has playground, flamingo pond, swimming pools. Markets are great but bit fraught with a toddler. Sai Kung a beautiful day trip out on metro and bus or ferry to Llama or Lantau - a world away from the bustle in half an hour. Have a great trip.

Is she on a 'visit visa' or a 'tourist visa'? Think the rules are different depending on which it is. Not sure if this applies to AD residents but I recently employed a Filipina on a tourist visa. Had to go to DNRD ( I went to Bin Sougat centre on Airport Road) to change it to an 'employment visa'. This required various documents, had to get typing done (which you can do there) and paid 2,000 deposit (which you should get back at the end of her contract) plus a couple of hundred for the typing. Then she had to fly to Kirsh to re-enter on the employment visa. This cost 700 and took an afternoon. Then she had the medical which was another few hundred and when the results came through went back to the DNRD to sign employment contracts and get labour card. Then pay 5,300ish I think which I believe you don't get back - that's just the government fees for employing someone. And that's it I think.
