Go to Borders (my favourite is MCC) as they have a fab range of toys and normally at better prices than the other big toy stores. My DD loves the Melissa and Doug range, particularly their wooden cutting food ranges and puzzles. Or play dough? We have some playmobil but I think there is still an awful lot of tiny little pieces for that age. Not that I'm concerned about DD eating them or anything, more them getting lost Playmobil do a range specially for younger children without all of the small pieces, which is what I was recommending. edited by BrownEyedGirl on 06/02/2013

I make a monthly transfer to the UK from Al Rostamani. I think that was based on a recommendation from EW. The rates & fees are reasonable, certainly much cheaper that using HSBC!

Playmobil is great - they do a range for younger children. Available in most toyshops. Otherwise if I want a special gift for a child Kids Inc (behind Al Tayer Motors) or Dubai Garden Centre has some lovely things.

I'm confused. There was a thread about the 'suicide seat' recently & links to some useful research. I made some changes to my children's car seats in the back of our car after reading. However, I read that recent advances in car safety mean that the passenger seat is now safer than the back seats. So if a child is in an age appropriate car seat & properly restrained what's the problem with them sitting in the front with the airbag turned off? I know it's illegal but I mean from a safety point of view.

I am a teacher for Babysplash, a specialist swimming programme for infants & toddlers in Dubai. It's best to start the water familiarisation process with children as soon as possible. We take babies from 3 months. We all have breath holding reflexes but these are particularly pronounced in babies younger than 6 months. If they are introduced to the water early enough the transition to learned behavior is generally easier. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental child death. We teach important self rescue techniques which can be learned even by young infants. Baby swimming is also tremendously stimulating for babies & toddlers both socially & in terms of their gross motor development. We use colourful toys, sing songs & play games. Babysplash is a lovely way to introduce your little ones to the water!

Try to ignore the annoying comments from other perfect Mums out there. Babies have little accidents but they are often more robust that we think. Both mine had similar incidents when they where babies & they were just fine. Keep a close eye on your LO & relax (but not too much!). X

She's still very young so don't stress. Leave it for now & try again in afew months. In the mean time do what another poster suggested & leave the potty out for her to sit on / play with in her own time. My DD was a nightmare - I tried several times but had to give up & as she seemed so determined not to want to do it. I think it was an emotional readiness issue. Finally I left it until she was 3 & it happened within a week. It's actually far easier to have them in nappies so just make the most of it while you still can! edited by BrownEyedGirl on 14/01/2013

My poor friend! Her lovely young cat has been run down in the road outside their house in Springs 3. She's also our neighbour. A sweet little boy knocked on the door asking if we knew who he belonged to as they were out at the time. It worries that people are driving so fast in a residential area. She's so upset :-(( I can't believe anyone would just drive off & leave a poor animal in the road!

DS is fascinated by zombies but finds them frightening too. I read somewhere that you should validate the fear 'I can see why you think they're frightening' instead of 'oh, don't worry, they're not real'. I tell him to 'change his brain channel' & think about fun things like farting or bubbles. If that doesn't work I remind him that because they have no brains they're very slow & stupid & couldn't get him anyway. Maybe that's a more suitable tactic for boys though!

OMG, that's ridiculous!!! JAPS charge a fixed fee from reception to year 6 - currently around 36k per annum. We have zero company contribution. I'm not looking forward to paying for secondary schooling over here!! WHY would you compare these two schools? One is owned and the other is not....(one is a mans business and the other is managed by a board of governors). I am well aware of the differences in the ways that the school are financed. My point was that very good primary school education is available in Dubai for considerably less than the extortionate fees being charged by GEMS.

I definitely would NOT recommend AISS. Kati's is reasonable. I'm not sure about the quality of tuition yet but Desertsports are coming to the Lakes/Meadows and are professional admin wise, at least. I am Austswim qualified & experienced with learn to swim & stroke development. I do private lessons on Friday morning in the Springs. Let me know if you want further info.

I had this problem for ages & it was driving me mad!! I did lots of research into it. Moths only eat natural fibers. I thought carpet beetles were the most likely culprit but I couldn't find any evidence of them. I didn't want to use mothballs as I discovered that camphor is highly toxic for children. I laundered all of my clothes on high temps. I disinfected my wardrobe & moved lots of clothes to a separate draw unit. Now I always close my bras before they are put into the machine (I actually think this was the problem!) No holes for months now! Good luck :-)

We went there on Friday to see Santa & had a great day! He has a real long white beard & looks very convincing - a bit like Dickie Attenborough. We were there for a good few hours & he was just milling about in the snow park & even joined in with the snowman building for a while. Otherwise he was in his little grotto but there wasn't too much of a queue for photos & pressies. There's a little cafe on the ground opposite the penguins but the best one is at the top of the slopes (think you need a different pass to get to that one though). edited by BrownEyedGirl on 17/12/2012

Can't comment on Moms & Tots. I didn't like Toptots - thought it was a bit frenetic & they were rushing through too many things in a small space of time. I agree about boogie babies - awful songs & unenthusiastic instructors. We really liked Little Gym & Babysplash. Also we recently discovered Jolly Babies which is lovely. I can mail you more details if you like.

Ski Dubai :-) Do you have to buy a snow park pass for each child and adult to visit Santa at his groto? Do you think my 2 year old would be ok as they have a minimum 3 year entry? Yes to the snow park passes. We took both DS & DD while they were 2 & had no problems. It's so lovely & festive!

It's governed by the contract. In the absence of an express term I would say you have no duty to repaint. Fill any holes you leave, then fair wear & tear should cover any deterioration in the decoration.

I recommend 'Why we get fat' by Gary Taubes. Not a diet plan but this book clearly explains how/why so many of us gain weight (carbs!!). Those of you saying eat less, exercise more and suggesting that sloth & gluttony are the cause of fatness are wrong according to him & his evidence is absolutely convincing! In a nutshell don't exercise (great health benefits but doesn't help shift weight - controversial I know!) & eat unlimited fats/proteins (not too much exclusive protein) & green leafy veg. Absolutely no unrefined carbs! Limited complex carbs, milk & nuts. Half avocado & some olives/pickles each day too, plus some salty bouillon (to counter the effects of water loss/retention & electrolyte imbalances).

Landlord can put the rent up 5%-20% depending on rental calculator even in the second year as long as they give 90 days notice and it complies with the rental calculator. All cheques stay the same, if you want to pay in more cheques then you are changing the terms so landlord can increase rent if they want to. The terms of the contract remain the same (eg. the number of cheques). Any changes are subject to mutual consent.
