Safa park used to be great but I haven't been there since the canal works. There is a boat pond with boats to hire etc. Also the archive cafe which is nice. Lots of space to play and run around. One of my favourite parks is Barsha Park behind Mall of Emirates...there are actually two parks there but I'm talk ig about the bigger one with the running track beside Al makewab. Mushrif park is also nice for a change. I haven't been to Zabeel but have heard good things about it. Creek park is also nice although cable car not working at the min. There is an interactive area you can go into there as well plus obviously you have the Dolphinarium..my kids like watching the sea planes taking off and landing from there. Hope that helps.

Sadly there was still no heartbeat but it did reassure me that doctor hadn't made a mistake. I was living in a country with limited ambulance service and a 9 month baby and although gynae told me I could wait for natural miscarriage she advised it might not be great if I was alone with my baby. I arrived hospital and had a scan. Was given cytotoxic just before the D&C which actually started the process although I found this bit distressing. I came round very quickly and no real pain and little bleeding. Emotionally was a mess for a bit..DH not very supportive. As we left hospital he suggested we go out for lunch..I refused so he took me home, left me with baby and returned to work. I can wryly laugh now but wasn't laughing at the time.

I'm sorry for your loss. I went through similar thing years ago and like you I was worried that they had maybe got it wrong. My gynae suggested another scan immediately preceding the D&C just to check.

PS until your husband has residency he can't rent a villa or apartment...you can only rent serviced apartments. You can also ONLY drive a hire car till you get residency. Once he has residency then you and kids will get your residency. Once residency comes through you MUST convert to a UAE driving licence immediately and then you can drive your own car. Schools will request residency and ID cards for your kids but just explain that they are in process Nd should be ok.

Until you have residency cards you have no option but to do visa runs. It really isn't too bad..it's about 90mins to get there, usually in and out very quickly and then you can stop off at Hatta Fort hotel on way back for lunch. I've also done it after collecting the kids in afternoon from school. You can do it in less than three hours.

Starbucks, least I think it's Starbucks ( it's not Costa but another chain) in centre with big Spinneys. Building where the Music centre place is has a java place which sells decent coffee.

There is an indoor teach it pool in Al Quoz , opposite Bounce. I can't remember the name but it is also geared up for teach it kids with disabilities so you should be able to find an instructor there.

When I stayed in one three years ago I found I could get almost 50% discount by going into the building and directly asking how much the rent was. There are several behind Mall of Emirates.

Believe it or not mine are not at the most expensive schools. I have two but both at secondary which is AED72k per year per child which equates to AED144k. Many other secondary schools are way higher than this .

GE..not sure where your money is going but we have about 80% of the income that you state. Our apartment costs AED100k a year but school fees are AED144k a year. We don't get flights and my kids do a couple of paid activities every week. They are always needing money for school and uniform is costly and both outgrowing clothes at a tremendous rate. I'm also topping up a mortgage back home as rental income doesn't cover mortgage. It is tight but we get by.

Best to call the embassy. They were very helpful when my DD passport was caught up in back log earlier in the year. One of the issues is that even if you get an ETD ( emergency travel document) you can't exit Dubai without your residency visa which will be in the old passport. I was told that if it was allowed I would have to go through process of cancelling this visa ( and then doing visa again on returning to Dubai). As I said best bet is contact Embassy as after the passport debacle earlier in year they did put some changes in place but I am unsure as to what they are.

Years ago when I took kids away on school trips the school booked flights, hotels etc independently. I remember spending ages researching options, hotels etc. I believe there is now a tendency for schools to contract out for the entire package so I guess one is now paying for commission on a "middle man" I also have heard, but whether true or not that some schools in Dubai aim to turn some profit on trips. I know majority don't and it may be rumours that some do.

Students on the trip will have to cover the cost of the teachers who are travelling. Insurance for a school trip is also hefty. Generally for safety reasons etc a private coach would be booked from Heathrow to the hotel..doesn't come cheap. Again, depending where they are visiting if you factor in cost of private coach etc it all adds up.

I àgree re not necessarily finding it more difficult back home. Here over 35% of salary goes on school fees and around 30% just to rent an apartment. So although we pay no tax by time we pay school fees we are actually paying as much if not more tax than we would in uk.

I found this impossible to get. Our visas took four months. Before coming out I had taken holiday insurance from UK but the longest period I could take this was for 60 days ( I may have been able to have got longer but to be honest I didn't partic look as had envisaged this being enough time) Once it expired I tried several different places but no one could assist. Taking insurance again from UK as if I was in holiday probably wouldn't have worked once I checked the small print. I kind of kept myself going with fact that I knew in case of accident I could take my kids to Rashid hospital where they would get initial treatment for free.

Sorry Puddle31 but I got to correct you. If child hasn't been in uk for the 3 years prior to going to uk they may not be able to access student loan and may have to pay overseas fees. I believe it all depends on the university and there are ways you can assist in perhaps obtaining what is called home status. Maintaining a home and paying council tax may help. I also believe there are lawyers/ agents who can assist. But yes, it can be very problematic. I have a friend who sent her daughter back fro two years for A levels and still can't get home status. What you save on school fees out here may help fund her university.

As others say, I think the issue is that you and your DH aren't discussing it. It may be that the budget is so tight that can't afford any more. I know we are hugely tight here and I keep a small wallet in which I put AED500 every month. This is my spending money for coffee, clothes etc. I don't buy a lot of clothes, we financially aren't in a position to do so. It's tough but if I spend any more then we are short for essentials. The difference is that I have calculated that this is all I can afford.

Oops. I forgot to check agency. School run starts early for me here...6.30am so I will do it tonight. I'm not sure re driving licence...I think you can convert to UAE without any time period but not sure about hiring a car. Got a friend who works for one of the bigger companies, I will try to find out. I would also advise hiring an automatic which most are out here. The driving out here is "different" and driving an auto just makes it a tad easier. Looks like you need a licence for one year to hire a car. http://www.traveldubai.co.uk/carrental.htm <em>edited by Buddha on 25/11/2014</em>

It is not enough to have a lawyer attest them...they must go to several places ( can't remember exactly what they are but they are 3) I was so stressed re the move, winding up work in uk etc that I paid an agency to do them in Uk I..it cost me £297 to have both my degrees attested and stamps from various embassies. My DH actually did the kids birth certificates out here but took a lot of running about from embassy to embassy. If you are married you will also need your marriage certificate attested.. If you use search function on here you will find companies who do all this. So, you will need all your degrees attested, your husband will require his done, child's birth certificate attested and marriage certificate attested. I do know people who have done the process themselves but I believe comes close to £100 per document just doing oneself so prob easier to use an agency. It's worth checking as the prices vary tremendously. As I said I paid £297 for two degrees.....they did not charge for the transcripts to be done in addition to degree certs ( some companies will try to charge you for transcript attestation as well) When you are first out here you can only drive on your UK licence which means you can only hire a car. You can't drive your own car on a non UAE licence. Once you have ID card and residency you MUST get your UAE licence....it's illegal to drive on UK licence once you have UAE visa. Getting licence is an easy process but you will need your husband to write you a letter of permission. I still hire in my own name as we haven't yet got round to buying a car. Another piece of advice...get all your passport photos put on a disc - you will need loads and constantly be going to the kodak shop to get more printed. PS I think is aw you respond to a post about a job in RAK. It is commutable but it is about an hour or more from Dubai depending on where you are living. <em>edited by Buddha on 24/11/2014</em>

Think the last week for the season was last week. They will start again around Easter hol time or just after. Runs from Umm Sequim beach opposite the entrance to the park and either starts 8 or 8.30am on a fri mornnig. Timing tends to depend on time of year. One hour activity, run by volunteers..you have to be responsible for your kids at all times if they take part. They basically split kids into different age groups and run various fun activities My kids used to love it but don't go that often now as it clashes with rugby.

GE. You must have been lucky. When my DH changed jobs they cancelled all our visas - his, mine and the kids. His took 5 months to reprocess, don't ask . So, the entire time kids and I were without medical insurance and had to do visa runs every month and school was constantly requesting the visa. Once his was done mine was really, really quick. Think a week.

I suggest you give Embassy a quick call as they will be able to answer questions properly. Also https://www.gov.uk/report-a-lost-or-stolen-passport I think one of the other issues might be the residency visa as without this on the passport it's difficult to exit UAE. I only know this becos my DD passport renewal got up in the backlog earlier in the year. I looked at using her Oz passport to travel to uk on but was told that as it didn't have he residency visa she wouldn't be able to exit. Best clarify with embassy directly.

My DD's are in British curriculum. Loads of Oz kids in their classes and the only "downside" seems to be that the Oz kids tend to be a year older than rest of their classmates. Think a lot of this is to do with Oz school year starting Feb and British one in Sept.

Once you move back to uk it is straight forward to renew. If you are residing overseas you can't renew it and in fact shouldn't be driving on it in UK. If you have an accident whilst using it then your insurance will be invalid. When I spoke to DVLA to clarify they stated that when UAE issue the licence here, they should take the UK one. Obviously they don't but technically it is invalid.

Official one stopped but a lovely group of ladies still meet to walk . They meet at Toast Cafe ( under Home centre) around 8.25am and at 8.30am they head upstairs and walk several laps before adjourning to Costa coffee near ski Dubai around 9.15am. They are very friendly. Just approach one of them or pop along to Costa...normally they all sit at the large table near the counter. <em>edited by Buddha on 18/10/2014</em>

Beebers..I always love your answers Thekrushr - I really like your response. It is so true. The minute we talk about weight LOSS we actually program our minds etc to hold onto the weight. It should never be about deprivation, guilt and cravings. Tell someone not to think of say an elephant and what's the immediate picture we get in our heads. Ditto, telling yourself not to eat chocolate or whatever...immediately a picture of us eating chocolate pops into our heads. Removing the words " lose weight" and " don't" is half the battle. I was horrified last week when someone wrote they couldn't sleep because going to bed hungry. If you make good healthy food choices ( note the use of the word choice rather than must not etc) you can still eat enough to food to make you not feel hunger pains but also allow you to lose weight. Some drinks for eg in Costa coffee have over 400 calories but do nothing to fill one up yet there are meals one can eat containing 400 calories or less that very much fill one up.
