Hi Max! I just checked this thread out of the blue and discovered your message. Is there a way to get an alert when a new post has been added? How did we get to almost 5 months old already? We should definitely meet up while our babies are still stationary! I live in Abu Dhabi but would be prepared to come to Dubai to meet everyone. Ned doesn't like the car very much but I can usually time it for a time when he is asleep and get at least part of the trip in peace. Are you in touch with everyone else? Let me know a time and place to suit you and anyone else free. Emma and Ned

Hello everyone!! I just read all the news! Congratulations to everyone! How lucky are we? I have another little boy to add to the April tally! We named him Ned and I am completely in love with him. I feel like I understand for the first time why people call babies angels. I feel like I have a gift from heaven. His due date was April 27 but he arrived three weeks ago during that big sand and thunderstorm. I still had one week left at work and SO much preparation still to do. But what a pleasant surprise! Apart from just enjoying some time not working I was going to research things like birth plans and immunisations and read a book about breastfeeding, not to mention fill the freezer with frozen meals. I ended up doing a lot of googling from the hospital bed on my phone (haven't stopped googling since!). He was still breech when my waters broke so I went in for an 'urgent' rather than emergency c-section. My Mum arrived the next day, my Dad a few days after that and they stayed for two weeks doing all the washing and cooking they could - it was great and lovely to have them here. On one hand the last three weeks has disappeared in a bleary blur of exhaustion and hormonal highs and lows, mostly highs, and on the other it feels like Ned has always been here. The recovery has been great, much better than I anticipated, now it is just getting a bit annoying that I can't drive or lift anything other than him. I would love to meet you and your babies. Let me know when you all meet up! I will try to keep checking the forum. I have so much more to say and ask and share but not the time. It has taken me days to finish this post (I'm sure you all know the feeling) so I'll post this now and hopefully share more again soon. xoxox

Hi Lyndy, How nice of you to take the time to update us on your experience. I am sorry you had HELLP syndrome (never heard of it!) and your daughter had to stay in hospital for 11 days but glad everything is fine now. I hope we can all say we had a great experience however our little ones choose to arrive. I'm still looking at a c-section for a breech baby. I would rather avoid major surgery but from all accounts the recovery is not too bad considering. Thanks for sharing the details. I'd rather know them now than be shocked and panicked later. All, I went to the second hand baby bazaar today. Anyone else? I picked up a few little things but it will be great once we know if this little passenger is a boy or a girl because there are some real savings to be made in clothes! And really good quality clothes. And toys! When we get to that stage. I can recommend it. Most of the stuff was in good condition. MrsAbdullah, I wouldn't try the various ways of inducing labour until 37 or 38 weeks but I've heard that reflexology can get things going. And a spicy curry! Good luck! xx

Thanks Mumofmoo and pinkbutterfly, that does help a lot. I'll take a selection and if they turn out to be the wrong size or something the shops are always open. Pink butterfly, I have a Dreamgenii pregnancy pillow for sleeping and it doubles as a nursing pillow so I'll try that first. I'll ask the LLL for their opinion though and let you know. xx

Hi all, Good to hear from everyone! I have been meaning to post for ages. I completely missed February! I am now 33 and half weeks and my little one is still sitting comfortably in the breech position. I have been trying every method the internet offers up for encouraging breech babies to turn - handstands in the pool, crawling on all fours, lying on the ground with bum propped in the air, walking up and down stairs sideways etc etc but nothing has worked yet. I have got until the 24th of March before my OB decides if I am a candidate for a physical manual turning on the baby from the outside (ECV) and then if that doesn't work I'll be booked in for a cesarean. She delivers breech babies vaginally but not for first time mums. Turn baby turn! A c-section would be fine but I'd rather avoid it if I can. We're doing all-day antenatal classes this weekend. I hope all day isn't too much! I am still planning for a natural delivery but not planning on writing much of a birth plan. I am going to be open to an epidural depending on how I feel. I have heard pethidine is bad for the baby. That's all I know! There are a few things that I will ask my OB about - one is skin-to-skin contact. I want the baby on my chest straight away, complete with all the muck. I have read that it is now standard in the UK to wait a few minutes before cutting the chord so the blood can finish emptying into the baby so I'm hoping they'll do the same here. The other thing is starting breastfeeding as soon as possible. Apparently within the first hour is good if everyone (Mum and baby) are both well and able. We have bought a cot and a change table but still need to buy a pram and a car seat! Does anyone know where the best place to buy a maxicosi cabriofix? My Mum and sister threw me a little babyshower while I was in Sydney so I got a lot of very nice and very practical things to help get me set up. We will need to get a baby Australian passport as soon as possible after he/she arrives so we have looked into it thoroughly and have an action plan to propel into action. If anyone else needs this info please let me know. I went to a meeting of the La Leche League last Thirsday evening to start to get prepared for breastfeeding. It was really good, not only for breastfeeding advice but also to meet other Mums. I am still working and will be until 38 weeks (unless I am booked in for a cesarean) so it has been difficult to meet people in the real world. Hopefully I will be able to meet you all one day after we've all had our babies and become expert parents and can get back out in public. I am expecting the first 4-6 weeks to be a bit of a blur of sleeping and feeding and not much else. I have a question about the hospital bag - what clothes are you packing for the baby? I am confused by the terminology - all-in-ones, babygrows, sleepsuit, etc is that with long sleeves or short sleeves? Long legs or no legs? With feet enclosed or out? Hiccup, I say do it, let your husband name your son the same as him. It will mean the world to him and he'll have an instant bond. It is an unusual practice but if it means a lot to him then that would be enough for me. Then you'll get full naming rights for the next one! And congrats on the new niece or nephew and cousin for your baby! Nice that they will be so close in age. We have two very long lists of names (one for boys, one for girls) that we don't hate - it was easier to agree on names that we don't hate at first! Now we need to get the two lists down to a few of each that we like. In terms of pregnancy woes, at the moment I have very few. A coupe of weeks ago I had excruciating hip/butt/back pain on the right side and I thought that was me for the rest of the pregnancy, hobbling around, going up stairs one by one but it passed and I feel pretty good now. I get tired and indigestion but I'm getting used to not sleeping well and I have been taking rennies for the indigestion and Zantac to keep the acid down. I was trying to stay off any drugs at all but I have a history of stomach ulcers so it was decided that I should avoid excess acid hanging around in my slow digesting stomach. Happy mother's day to all you UK Mums! I just realised I'll BE A MUM for the Australian mother's day! May 12!! You can all be honorary Australian Mum's this year. Nice to hear from you all! edited by bunintheoven on 13/03/2013

Hi everyone, I can't believe it is almost the end of January! I haven't posted here since last year! So much to catch up on. I did my glucose test today but got stuck in Abu Dhabi by the fog so by the time I got to City Hospital I had fasted 12 and a half hours instead of the requested 8-10. I didn't think it would be a problem but apparently it can affect the result so if I get an abnormal reading I'll need to do it again. Muffin86, at City you can turn up as early as 7.30am so the test should be over by 9.30am-10am so it is just like having a late breakfast, not as bad as it sounds. And the sugary drink gives you a little energy boost too. It was after 1pm by the time I ate and lunch never tasted so good! I have usually had breakfast before 7am! And at least one cup of tea. I'll get my results on Tuesday. Fingers crossed. Max I am sorry to hear you turned out to be one of the one in ten. It seems for some people there is no obvious reason why you got it and the next person didn't. I know a super-healthy super-fit woman who got it. I also read that in an ideal world all women would eat a diabetic diet while pregnant regardless - better for Mum, better for baby. Is it difficult? I hope you beat that cold too. Btw, you can get GF flour at spinneys and Waitrose and the organic store. Do you need to eat gluten free on a diabetic diet? I am 100% gluten free so if you need any advice I am happy to help. Hi Sandy! You are nearly a full month ahead of me, I am due at the end of April. I would love to meet up with all of you but still working so will have to wait until maternity leave. For now, I'm glad we've got this forum. Max, I am sorry to say I don't share any of your symptoms but I do have some weird ones of my own, including a fine blonde fuzz growing on my jawline. Sexy. You can especially see it in the sunlight. At least it is blonde. And sleep issues, I thought waking up in the middle of the night was just because I needed the loo or was uncomfortable (still not loving the left-side sleeping) but I have recently been reading about pregnancy related insomnia - hormone induced. Great. Hiccup, I was in London last week so went to John Lewis where I was hoping to quiz the sales assistant endlessly until I decided what I want in a pram (the sort of service you don't get here). I left feeling more informed but still undecided. I looked at the Uppababy and really like it. Did you get the Cruz or the Vista? I enquired about shipping and for the Vista, I think you got about 100 pound back for VAT and it cost about 200 pound for shipping... something to think about if the prices are much cheaper in the UK. I haven't done much comparative shopping. Actually I haven't done much shopping at all. To be honest, I haven't bought a single thing for the baby. I tried while at John Lewis but I ended up in the breast feeding section and got all overwhelmed by the different pumps and attachments and ice-packs and breast pads so I went and bought a pair of shoes instead. I am going home (Sydney) next week for two weeks so I keep telling myself I'll get serious when I get back. My Mum had me (as a twin) at 30 weeks so I now appreciate what a rude shock that must have been! Has anyone started classes? Anyone doing lactation classes? Or reading any good books? Fiction and non-fiction recommendations welcome! I was given 'Why French children don't throw food' a book about the French approach to parenting and parenthood as opposed to the British/American approach. It is an interesting read. Pink butterfly, I hope your blood pressure has gone back down and you are feeling well. I hope everyone else is feeling well too. If anyone else is going through the bio-oil like I am, I found it for sale on Ebay MUCH cheaper than you can buy it here even after postage. The dreaded stretchmarks.... I was about to sign off but I have one novice question to put out there - what are your intentions for sleeping arrangements when you get your little one home? Moses basket? Bassinet? or straight into the cot? In your room? For how long? Good luck everyone. Hopefully there won't be such a gap between this and my next post and hopefully the next one wont be so long. xxx p.s. thanks for the pelvic floor reminder Max!

Any more thoughts on pregnancy pillows? I am ready to try anything but it is difficult to know which shape to choose when it isn't really obvious why they are different shapes... Any further recommendations for the dream gennii or any of the other ones? Thanks!

Hi all, Not much to report really, I just wanted to say happy new year! And what a year this will be. I'm a bit nervous about it all. I have only just started to look at prams/strollers/pushchairs. I had no idea there was so much choice! I found it a little overwhelming. Pinkbutterfly, what did you buy? We still have plenty of time right? I am now 23 weeks. More pressing is my need to buy clothes that fit. I have found my changing body shape quite a challenge. I like it and I'm fascinated by it but it is still a challenge. I am not one of those people who only expand out front. My body is definitely stacking away the acorns for breastfeeding. I am trying to embrace it but it is difficult! So many changes in such a short time. Puberty took longer than this. Anyway, I also vowed not to moan about anything so I am just going to enjoy learning how to best dress my curves. Has anyone heard of diastatis recti? Or separation of the abdominal muscles? That's happening to me. I'd never heard of it! Because the result is weakened stomach muscles it can contribute to back pain. My resolution for the new year is to start yoga/pilates and strengthen the other muscles so that I have a good chance of recovery afterwards. The two halves don't always knit back together. Now I'm wondering what else is in store for me that I had never heard of. I have less than 4 months of discovery to go before the big eye-opener, the birth! I was going to keep this message short. Happy new year everyone! xx

Max that's terrible! You have every right to be sad and very mad! Did you make a complaint? We also don't want to find out but at every scan I get really nervous that I am going to find out by accident. Last time she said "don't focus on this part here" which of course makes you look and I thought that was a bit disrespectful of our request. The resolution was so low I couldn't see anything but I would have preferred her to say "you should look away now". Anyway, I am very sorry it happened to you but it is good to see you have the right attitude - and you get to say he or she now and not refer to it or the baby all the time. I haven't had chills or leaking, both sound awful, especially the chills. Leaking sounds like the weird sorts of things that you expect with pregnancy. Dare I ask where you are leaking from? Have you spoken to anyone about either? Let us know if you get any sort of explanation. I have had indigestion at the end of the day. Not fun. And I have a cold. Also not fun and frustrating to not be able to take anything for it. Shows how dependent I am on quick fixes. I'm not having my 20 week scan until I will be almost 22 weeks. I hope that isn't a problem. And I have been told to do my glucose test at about 27 weeks. I was just told to fast overnight from food and water and come to the hospital first thing in the morning (they open at 7.30am) and I'll be done by mid-morning. Fasting while you are sleeping is much easier than fasting during the day! Thanks for the youtube tips. I think I found your Irish pilates instructor. I really need to get back into some exercise. I have been letting it slip lately. I was very dedicated in the beginning and now I probably haven't done any exercise for a month! I need to start to get into shape. I know what you mean about feeling lardy. I need some good old exercise endorphins. And some sleep. On that note, good night, sleep tight, sweet dreams and happy weekend. I am seeing five films this weekend! What was that I was saying about exercise? Ahh, next week. Before I go, one question - has anyone's husband felt the movements yet? I have seen it move from the outside so it shouldn't be long. The hardest part will be getting the timing right. xxx

Hi Merinochristina, As far as I can tell (this is my first pregnancy) there are good stories and recommendations for all the OB/GYNs at City Hospital. Use the search function on this forum and enter each doctor's name to see what people have been saying about them in the past, then when you call the hospital to make an appointment have two or three in mind because some of them can be booked up well in advance. Although if you are only arriving in March you may be able to get your first choice. Start with this thread from just a couple of months ago to get some of the names: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=186532 Good luck. I hope the move isn't too stressful for you. Have you been to Dubai before? edited by bunintheoven on 30/11/2012

Hi all, Max, sorry to hear about your friend. It must be truly devasting. I'm finding it difficult to slow down and let other people carry things for me etc but it's a good point you make. Phily, I have had that tightening experience only once and it was after a mammoth day on my feet. I don't think it's too early for Braxton Hicks. Not common but not impossible. Not that i have any experience but i have heard of early BH, just not sure how early. If they keep happening I would mention it to your doc. Do you have email contact with him/her? I asked my doctor about the left side sleeping and she said that's only important after 28 weeks. So like Max said, go back to doing whatever gives you a good night's sleep! For now at least... Swapping body sides meant swapping bed sides for me (because I like to face out) so hubby is glad he gets his side of the bed back for a little while! Max, you were worried about doing the 20 week scan too late so I thought you'd like to hear that my doc prefers to do the morphology scan during the 21st week because you get a better view of the connective tissue of the heart (or something like that- I must start taking a notepad into appointments with me. And she recommends the Fetal Medical Centre for the scan because the scanner is trained specifically in fetal scanning and not just a radiographer. It is pay-and-claim but she thinks worth the hassle. I'm sure every doctor has difference practices and reasons but I just thought I'd share my experience. Thanks for the youtube tip. I looked to download a prenatal yoga DVD but couldn't find anything good. And 28 minutes sounds perfect. I'll look it up. Is anyone around over the Xmas period? xx

Hi all, I have something exciting to share! For those like me, addicted to a good cup of tea and trying to watch your caffeine intake, I have finally found a good decaf tea!! It is Barry's Tea and you can get it in some Spinneys and Waitrose. I have tried Tetley and Dilmah and Dilmah was better than Tetley but Barry's is better than both of them by far! Max, I can't compare City with American but I have had no reason to complain with the City system so far. I went on their maternity ward tour last Friday and it was all very reassuring. I don't think it is too late to change. I was told I should switch from the doctor I was seeing to the obstetrician for delivery around 21/22 weeks. I have my next appointment at City this Thursday. I haven't booked in for the morphology scan yet but I would think an external company might even be better if that's what they specialise in. If you're not happy, I would shop around. You could keep both options open while you decide. You don't want to be in labour and not have faith in the team around you. Can you tell me more about the palpitations you mentioned? I have had what I thought felt like palpitations a couple of times. They didn't last for long but I wasn't sure if I should mention them to anyone. This week I have developed hip pain at night and it is driving me a little insane. Has anyone else experienced this? It is like a dull ache and you just can't get comfortable. I was up googling it in the middle of the night the other night and it seems fairly common from around 16 weeks and is the result of loosening ligaments. I was miserable. There are a number of suggestions including doing stretches morning and night, putting a pillow between your knees and getting a foam topper for your bed. Is anyone else worrying about making sure you're sleeping on your left side? I'm normally a right side or back sleeper so it is just one more stress to make sleep a little more difficult. I thought this was something we didn't have to worry about until later but then one of the books I'm reading said at 18 weeks 'you should continue sleeping on your left-hand side' so oops! I thought I had better start. I'll ask my doctor about it. The other thing I am going to ask her about is the flu shot. I have never had the flu or the flu shot but I saw it recommended for pregnant women and with my travel to London in December I wondered whether I should get it this year. Max, sadly I am going to have to miss the Baby Show all together. I am not flying back from London until Saturday evening. Finally, I have a heartwarming story to share. I was in Ras al Khaimah on Friday and happened to be at the museum at the same time as a planned visit by the Sheikh. To welcome the Sheikh there was a big bagpipe and drum band. Soon after the band started I got two little kicks! Baby like bagpipes! I wasn't sure if they could hear yet and thought maybe it was a coincidence or caused by the vibrations but google says the baby starts to hear from around 18 weeks! That's most of my news for the week. Has anyone looked into antenatal classes yet? When do you normally do antenatal classes? Later on? Looking forward to hearing all your news, xx p.s. I had a teary day the other day - I was a bit delicate to start with but I knew it was hormones when I walked into Pottery Barn Kids and burst into tears at the sight of the Christmas decorations. Crazy lady.

Hi all, Sorry for the long silence. I went to London for a week of work and then Sydney for 10 lovely days to visit family and friends and celebrate my birthday with my twin. The word birthday has a whole new meaning now! It was very nice. I missed having a wine with them all but made up for it in good food. It starts to seem a lot more real when people are giving you baby gifts! All gender neutral for us - we aren't going to find out until he/she arrives. Pink butterfly - what a shock! I hope you didn't have too many pink things. I have my 16 week appointment today. I really look forward to these appointments. I am starting to relax a lot more but it is nice to be reassured that everything is ok in there. Fingers crossed. Has anyone felt any movements yet? A couple of times I have felt something that I COULD be a movement but I'm not sure. My grandmother tells me it is my imagination. Thanks Nana. For people who know I am pregnant I am definitely showing now. People on the street might just wonder if I have eaten too many burgers. I have some H&M maternity jeans which I love but everything else is just larger sizes or stretchy material. No elasticated waists yet. I haven't started looking at equipment/furniture at all. Good tip to wait for the shopping festival! I would love to go to the Mother Baby and Child Show but I will be in London again so could only go on the last day, the 8th. If anyone is planning on going then let me know and hopefully we can meet up. Has anyone else been having vivid dreams? I should start writing them down. They are a bit disturbing. Well, back to work today, should get moving. It was nice to catch up with you all. I am glad everything is going well. Max, I hope you get some better sleep. Have you tried having a banana before bed? Banana has tryptophan in it which helps induce sleep (so they say). So does dairy and walnuts. And turkey I think!

Hi Max, Hi Aprils, Good news! I had my scan on Monday and got my blood test results today - all normal! What a relief. I feel very fortunate. And lucky. And happy. Now to break the news! First I need to decide, am I: 'with child', 'expecting', 'up the duff', 'breeding' or just plain preggers. It still feels weird to say I am pregnant. I think it might lead to confusion (or disappointment) if I say I have a bun in the oven. Good luck with your scan tomorrow Max! Best wishes to everyone. xx

Hi all, I am really enjoying this thread. desperatejumjane - I don't know if one month discrepancy would be a problem but I don't think so. As long as you are married I can't see it being a problem. I seem to remember a case where two expats were caught 'in a fond embrace' in public so they went to jail. They got married and were then released. I think you'll be fine. I hope so. You can't be the first person in this situation. Let us know how you get on. What do you think of Dr Britt? I am having my scan next week when I will be 12 weeks, 2 days. I am glad to hear that they can tell you something during the scan and you don't have to wait too long wondering. Congrats Eli1979 on the good result. It must be a relief. I am amazed they could tell you if it was a girl or boy so soon. Was it clear to an untrained eye? I am hoping to not find out until the end so I should probably tell the doc that so I can look away at the right moment. Philly - that's good to know about Dr Ibrahim. I haven't registered yet so it is good to have recommendations. I haven't had the different body smell or the brain fog or the brrrrrrt! But I have had vivid dreams, super sonic powers of smell (when normally I have a bad sense of smell), a metallic taste in my mouth, stubborn pimples (what about the glow?), and what they call slow transit time (aka constipation). What joys. Max - I also get those weird pulls in my lower abdomen if I crouch or twist when I am getting up. The idea of mushrooms turns my stomach but if someone else cooks them then I LOVE them. This week I haven't been able to get enough tomatoes. Last week it was cheese. I don't mind eggs but I have been trying to eat more of them for the choline. Good for baby brain development apparently. I have been paranoid about calcium lately. How much is enough? I don't know why but there is no calcium in my pre-natal vitamin. I am using Pregnacare Plus. You need vitamin D and magnesium to help absorb calcium too but being in an office all day means I don't get much sunlight. I have taken to going out at lunchtime and walking slowly down the street with my arms stretched out trying to catch some rays. Crazy lady! I have quite a number of things that I can't wear anymore because they are too tight around my waist or because they don't hide the tubby tummy. I wouldn't say I am 'showing' but it does look like I have put on weight in my middle (and a little elsewhere too if I am honest - all that cheese and eggs). I am looking forward to being able to tell work and then being able to let it all hang out. And not have to make excuses about why I'm not drinking. As much as I'd love to, I can't catch up this weekend but looking forward to hearing everybody's updates. Did anyone notice a little while back any references to meeting up got deleted from our thread? I wonder why they would do that... Good luck girls. xx p.s. maybe too soon for us but I discovered on the Abu Dhabi woman forum (the competition) they have a pinned thread called 'Ask a midwife'. Could be useful reading.

As for hospitals, I hadn't given it much thought, trying not to get too far ahead of myself. I have been seeing Dr Munira at the Dubai Mall medical centre. Now that I am getting closer to the magic 12 weeks I asked what happens next. She said you need to register with a hospital and she recommends City Hospital. You go along at 5 or 6 months and meet the doctor who will deliver the baby. I'm not sure if you can choose. You would have a couple of appointments with them before the birth. I am completely naive about this whole thing so I had assumed that she would be delivering. She explained she can provide the prenatal care but her specialism is in fertility. I really like her but now I am wondering if I should find someone who can provide the care AND deliver or if it doesn't really matter. I am also thinking about speaking to some doulas. What has been everyone else's experience so far? Has anyone made sense of it yet? Max, I hope you enjoyed your hubby's birthday and it wasn't too difficult missing out on all the good stuff. Hiccup, I agree, time has never passed so slowly. Thanks for the info on Healthbay clinic. I see they also do antenatal classes.

Hi girls, I am very excited (and a little terrified) to say I have an April 27 2013 due date! It is also my first so after using Expatwoman as a source of information for years I have finally signed up to use the forum. Thanks for setting up this thread Max. I have been quite lucky in the nausea stakes. I will have three days of constant nausea (no vomiting) then feel absolutely normal for a week then another three days of nausea. My problem is over-worrying about what we should and shouldn't eat. Never before has it mattered so much what I put in my mouth! I am looking forward to reaching the end of the first trimester milestone when maybe I can relax a little. We have only told immediate family so far. What have you all decided to do about telling people? Looking forward to sharing the journey!
