I did over 2 years ago and it was a very pleasant experience. With regards to what they provide or not, at the time they basically gave me everything for baby including clothes (I forgot to pack my babys clothes - was very surprised babies didn't come with clothes or manuals :) haha) but I would possibly check with the hospital now - as it may have changed

Oh God....as a British Asian moving over next month - am I going to be treated like a lower class citizen in the office / shopping / restaurants etc..... Wow! You aren't even in Dubai yet and you already call maids "lower class citizens". That must be a record. Ummmm unless I'm missing something 5herry didn't call maids ''lower class citizens'' - but it seems you just did!

One of my BF's get this all the time, she just laughs it off now. My bff had this happen to her.... A few months ago, she was fixing my dd's hair and a lady came up to her, pushed my dd aside rudely and asked if she was looking for a new job. My friend looked a little shocked until I stepped in and said "you don't want her, she's cr@p, I have to beat her every morning..." haha - Didn't someone post that on EW a few months ago - Woman admits to beating maid daily ! :)

Most Indian women at play areas are the maids though does that mean they should be treated differently? Which is what your post implies! I think women should treat other women with compassion, kindness and respect. If you treating anyone with less than that - then YES you should treat them differently - treat them better! Just women? Or all human beings? Treat better some more than others, why? I have directed this at women because frankly I think it's disgusting to witness women treating other women so poorly! If I wanted to tackle world peace about everyone treating everyone better, this might not be the forum to do that - but one woman at a time, might have their minds refreshed by knowing that they are no better than anyone else and to treat eachother better!

Look this is a tricky situation and thankfully that has never happened to me. But I wouldn't give her any money towards a new bag - it is always a risk that something might happen to any lovely things we buy and use out, especially on a night out. It was an accident and you never did it on purpose. I doubt she would go out and buy exactly the same bag again and if anything she has also learnt a valuable lesson too.

I can't get my head around asking a 100 people to a house warming never mind then asking them to pay. Why a 100 people? Are they all expected to bring a housewarming gift (as is the norm) ? Then they have to pay so that it has cost the hosts next to nothing and they get a 100 presents??? Or am I wrong? I hope so. I have to say that I have never come across such stingyness / freeloaders / users anywhere as I have in Dubai. It seems to attract them but this one really must come close to taking first prize. Look I haven't been to a house warming, but my initial thought is how many people actually take a gift? I automatically take beautiful flowers (at the least) when going to a friend for dinner. Don't know if I would actually go and get them a gift though - maybe I'm the socially numb one now?

Her tone was normal and sweet. They would like a money contribution. and how was your tone? I was normal and just said oh ok. We couldn't talk long, but when I see her - I will tell her how awkward I feel about this kind of invitation.

I have clarified this with the host, and they will provide everything and would like people to give a small contribution to the meal and drinks.

Why host a party you don't want to pay for? Just don't do it. If the group of friends had been speaking of doing it and one eventually said, ok then I'll do it at my place, but we all chip in for it, that's one thing - it was the group planning it and one saying they'll offer the venue, but not exclusively throw the party. But to plan up a party and then ask people to pay? No, that's not right. 'Bring a bottle' - ok 'Bring your own beef' - ok (we'll provide drinks/salads/breads etc.) But 'bring some cash' - no. What if the guests give more cash than the party is worth? They make money off it? Can you take left overs home if you've paid for them? lol I totally agree with this!

You are right the invitation does not say monetary contribution but it does say - when you are here a contribution would be appreciated. How can that mean anything other than money? This will be an asian buffet, very few of the 100 guests are asian, so maybe there will be 20 different rices? I'm certain the contribution is money.

Shaf, I haven't read all the responses. But yes it is possible, it doesn't have to be ridiculously hard. Have you got a double buggy? I manage to do this, when DD was younger, it was actually easier, cos she slept most of the time. DS was strapped in the front and I pushed them along and did what I needed to. If grocery shopping, I put a basket on top of the buggy.... or put DD (who is still in her carchair) INTO the trolley and DS into the seat of the trolley and piled groceries around DD... Now that DD is 8 months and more awake and interactive - I make sure I have loads of snacks on me and they are happy. I don't have a maid, or help.... but a good stroll around a mall or walk along JBR is always nice. Reminds me we need that playdate :) PS People are still commenting on the beautiful photo's you took!

She is a good friend and if she had to ask me what I thought about it - I would find it very difficult to say anything other than how awkward I find it to be. That is my opinion on this and I know we are all different. if she's a good friend, then tell her how you feel - because you won't be the only one and I'm sure she'll actually be happier knowing not to make that social faux pas. Yes if she had to ask me then I would as politely as I could - say something. But to just go right on out and tell her, especially if she doesn't ask - I'd hate to offend her.

:\: That's a first for me!!! I would be busy that night. Nothing wrong with your thinking, it's their thinking that's a bit screwy. Reminds me about two instances where my husband was "invited" to a gathering for birthdays. On one occasion he arrived late and had a cup of coffee and the next day he got a "bill" for his share, which was the full amount as the bill was divided equally. The second occasion he was invited by another colleague to come and stop by for a drink and some canapes for her birthday. He took a break from work to wish her happy birthday and had a coke. Again, the next day he got a "bill" for 125AED for his coke. People have strange ways, that's for sure. oh my word!

I haven't done this for 10 days :( I know very slack!) but last night I thought I'd begin again and I can't find my DVD anywhere....... I have become super organised at home and my DVD is no where to be found! Don't know if my toddler hid it somewhere (although I've searched HIGH and LOW) so I'm feeling seriously demotivated now!! :( I miss the SHRED (never thought I'd say that!) Can you get to Discovery Gardens after 6.30pm one night this week? Yes I can.... Definitely :) Are we going to do it together? :) Will send you an email

Forever 21 and Dikane - I am so sorry that you've experienced this pain as well. There are so many more women who are walking around with this pain as well. Our husbands deal with the situation and their grief so differently and so often it helps to just speak to women especially ones who really understand your emotions. Forever 21 - I understand what you are speaking of, maybe we can chat more offline? please email me lauraburns000 @ gmail dot com

I just had a really difficult pregnancy. Honestly Dr George is the MOST qualified OB/GYN and maternal med specialist in this country! He has a wonderful bedside manner and if I ever became pregnant again - I would see no one else, other than him and if he wasn't available - then Dr Pour Mirza at FMC.

No I don't think they should ALWAYS pay. Even if you earn a lot less than him - it's the gesture that counts and I'm sure most men would appreciate being ''treated'' sometimes.

Cyclone T - you are right! Yesterday morning I did it first thing... and the day was good. especially because I wasn't procrastinating in my head - delaying it... and delaying it. Although I ate well today, 30 minutes ago I thought stuff it... but decided no longer to be controlled by feelings so popped it in and did it against my will. Feel so good now! :) Tomorrow morning I've got an appointment with Jillian and I won't miss it!
