May I ask which nursery you are at? My son will start nursery next week at Rising Star and I've been thinking it would help if he had a friend there in advance.

I wasn't sure if it was okay with the nursery for me to stay with him for a little while. It's a good idea - thank you. Now it's just getting him there!

My DS will be 4 in November and I am going to start him in nursery in the next 2 weeks. He is terrified and assures me there is NO WAY he will go! How do I make this easier on him (and me)? Do I take him kicking and screaming and just leave him there? We are new to Dubai and tells me everyday how he doesn't like it here and misses our old home (in Canada). How do I help with this transition? I know once he makes some friends he will be happier but he has been acting incredibly shy around other kids and hasn't made any friends yet. He had some friends at home and keeps talking about them. I took him to the nursery last week but he wouldn't come out from behind my legs and says he didn't like it there. It seems like a really nice place to me but . . . Help!! it's breaking my heart to see him so upset!:( edited by CABear on 03/10/2011

Palmer's Stretch Mark cream. I've had two pregnancies, used it everyday and no stretch marks. It's inexpensive and available in Dubai.

Pomegranate replied : No excuse for the man to be rude to you and to steal the seat during that brief moment is not fair but 'in my day' children were taught to give up their seat for adults........ and for the taxi driver - some help and some don't. I think their official duty is to just drive the taxi from a-b and anything else (assistance with bags) is a bonus. I agree with children giving up their seats when they are a bit older and it is safe. I believe a grown man standing in the metro is less likely to fall over due to motion, etc whereas I have seen kids get knocked over when the metro starts & stops. I don't care if it's the taxi driver's official duty! This is my point - it's plain rude to watch a pregnant woman struggling with bags and children and not offer to help. My biggest complaint was the taxi behind honking for me to hurry up!! edited by CABear on 30/09/2011

Sometimes my son leaves the taxi door open and I pretend I don't notice while I'm gathering all my belongings that the driver leaves on the ground.

I don't think I've stopped sneezing since I arrived in Dubai 3 months ago!! My allergies are so bad! I worry a lot about the food we eat here. Coming from the west coast of Canada where we live in a semi-agricultural area, we ate food grown/raised locally - I didn't realize how spoiled we were. I noticed the Garden Centre here has a local organic food market on Saturday mornings, has anyone been?

I must say it is comforting to read all these posts and know there are so many women in a similar situation. I am willing to meet with anyone who is interested, especially those with kids of a similar age. 3boys, my boys are 11 months and 4 in November. We would love to meet up sometime, my oldest is especially in need of a playmate! We live in Discovery Gardens but are pretty good at getting around on the metro/taxis. My email address is cherylabear at gmail dot com.

I have been living here for just over 3 months and am feeling very isolated. I have two small boys (not going to school) and am pregnant with my third (maybe a girl this time?. I haven't got a car and find it difficult to explore without one. My husband is an exec. chef and we are finding his salary does not stretch as far as we hoped! So no budget for a second car, and find it difficult finding things to do for the boys that doesn't cost a lot of money. I have met a couple of wonderful people but their lives are busy so I don't see them often. I am interested in the coffee mornings but I have assumed they are not child friendly??

Thanks for the replies! Green-ish I am curious about the peg perego, if I have a car seat attached to the wider side, can I still fit my 18mo. old in the narrower side? This sounds like what I am looking for. I really need something light weight as I don't have a ramp entrance at my apartment so I have to carry it up and down stairs with groceries, etc. There is a peg perego double on dubizzle but I don't know if it's the same one. I guess I'll call and find out.

I just got this info yesterday from Al Wasl: NICU Level 1 care Dhs. 2200, Level 2 care Dhs. 2800, Level 3 care Dhs. 3900 per day. Caesarean Delivery Package/Shared Room Dhs. 10000. I am pregnant and not covered by insurance, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly! I have a friend that had her baby at 27 weeks and their bill was Dhs. 300 000! Luckily covered by insurance! Going home to have the baby is not an option for me. Don't know what else to do but just stay positive and hope for the best. I've had 2 children already, the first was c-section, the second was in NICU for 3 days.

I think I'll go to Marina Mall today and see if Waitrose carries it. I usually buy 4 tins at a time so I'll see if they'll deliver - good idea!

You won't be able to hear the heartbeat that early but you should be able to see it flickering in an ultrasound. coffeegal - I had bleeding with both of my first two pregnancies (very heavy with one) and everything turned out fine. It's very scary but just try to keep positive! btw - I'm a Canadian mom too, expecting my third April 7th.

Also - I have a health card issued by Ministry of Health. Is this the right one? Someone told me I need a Government of Dubai health card, is this the same thing? They look a bit different. I want to make sure I have all the appropriate paperwork done when I go for my appointment.

Can I ask how small is small? We have a small room, no bathroom attached, I am wondering if this is meant to be a nanny's room? We have just found out we are pregnant with our third and I feel that I will need some help particularly when the baby is born. I am debating whether to hire a live-out nanny or if this small room is in fact meant to be a nanny room. How much would we pay for a live-out nanny?

I've recently moved to Discovery Gardens with my husband and two small children. We are really happy here. We have a huge 2 bedroom apartment which is reasonably priced and payable in 12 cheques. We also got 1 month free which really helped with our set up costs. I don't work so the traffic is not an issue for me. I find it conveniently located for groceries, taxis, metro, Ibn Battuta, etc. My major complaint is the swimming pools - when we moved in we were told they were closed for maintenance, but have since discovered they have never been open. I agree that some buildings look a little run down but ours seems to be well maintained. Discovery Gardens gets a lot of bad press but I find it a great place to live!

Thanks for your replies. I would like to work full time or close to it but any jobs I have looked at either I am not qualified for, or don't pay enough. I've been thinking probably office work of some sort, preferably HR. Nursery/ child care is going to be expensive plus I would probably need a car depending on where the job was located. I've also thought about taking some online courses that might help me find a job but I don't really know where to start. I feel like I'm starting out all over again (which is kind of exciting) but difficult when one has a family to care for too!

Thanks everyone - I was actually thinking about bringing 1 or 2 children into my home. I would want it to be legal though. I am considering working in the fall but with the cost of childcare for my 2 boys it hardly seems worth it. I would love for them to have other children to interact with and wouldn't mind a little extra money too.;)
