It's common for Carribean and Africans preparing meals to wash meat and fish and often with the use of lime too. It gets rid of any residual bits from the fish market like scales and blood clots and stuff... not a meat eater myself but still wash most of the meat I prepare

I have tickets for the Opera Gala and I would like to know how smart one needs to dress. My mother is coming from the UK and Dh and I are taking her so she wants to know what to pack! Has anyone been in previous years and can shed some light? TIA

Off with her head! No seriously if that is the attitude before the visa is stamped, imagine after? I don't believe in giving second chances anymore! I did it with 2 maids because I felt sorry for them but I am the one out of pocket now. completely agree... We are out of pocket and suffering as a result. No more kind madam!

I had a lovely maid who cleaned well and was great with the kids but just after all visa stuff sorted the attitude i got a glimpse of earlier (that i thought had been dealt with), came out in full force, to the point that she told me i need to control my children more (they are well behave IMHO) - cut a long story short, we had a meeting to resolve attitude and at the point that whilst my DH was talking and she sat with her back to him flicking through a mag, she was booked on the nxt flight to Manila - Halas. I would be worried. it's an expensive mistake - believe me!

completely agree - they were very good at taking blood, I have 'good veins' but very painless, quick and lovely staff. I did end up waiting around for most of the morning as the lady who was meant to call me on my mobile for the doctor's appointment later admitted to me she dialed 050 rather than 055 so I never got her calls! Just made it in time to get my DS from school but all good and it was refreshing someone admitting their mistake - she was lovely too. On another note!! Who would you recommend for a dentist for adults? Thank you again x

I have been to al Noor airport road for paed and opthalmic and it was great but not sure for General Medicine stuff.... Gulf Diagnostic was not great when I went for dermatologist. Do you mean the imperial college london Diabetic clinic? Is it the Al Noor in Khalifa st? I have looked at their directory and can't find Dr Mccollough... am I looking in the right place? Thanks heaps (esp for optician stuff)

you could go for momotaro and get veggie(vegan) sushi... not so flash but wagamama has good vegan options.. Nandos (!) you can get roasted veg in pitta, just tell them to hold mayo and cheese... look online at menus if in doubt Ethiopian food is often vegan as they fast as vegan but the only restaurants I know are v basic and nr cournishe in Dubai and hard to find.... Good luck

sorry I edited it so it didn't mislead anyone. I don't ha;ve a maid, I was just suggesting Indonesian to Xia as i wondered if there were any similarities to Chinese food. Sorry, I am still on the look out for myself but being in Abu Dhabi seems to put most maids off :(

if she is demanding more than I would lay down the law a bit... or get rid. Fed up with hearing about maids getting pushy. It sounds like you are being very generous esp boyfriend bit which personally I wouldn't like.

As A Rancher says, same thing happens in our compound in AD. Something to be said for being in an semi independent like we were when in Dxb. The gossip and comparing seems to turn into bi@tching and everything is a drama and blown out of proportion

confiscate until break times for personal calls if she can't respect your wishes. I preferred my maid to have her mobile with her so that I could contact her easily and personal calls were few and far between, that said we had other attitude issues and sent her packing so prob not the best person to hand out advice?!

I moved to AD as my DH's job changed. Similarly to Bella I was in DXB for nearly 2 yrs and made lovely friends who I think will be life long and was blessed that this happened relatively easily and early on. I loved the area we lived in in Dxb and had found a great school for my DS. Moving to AD has been a mixed bag. I like the proximity but again like Bella doctors and dentists I found harder to locate recommended ones. I also struggle with the malls and need to trapse to a number to get what I need and with kids in tow can mean a week activity from one mall to the next. I do love where we live but have been slow and slack making friends.... overall it's good tho and at least DH is half awake at the end of the day rather than being a zombie!!!!

my friend brought her maid over from Singapore and another friend brought hers over from Kuwait, both maids were Philipino. It can be paper heavy but if you have a good maid then I would say it's worth it, finding a good maid seems hard and a matter of luck too IMHO. Good luck

DH is also champion snorer (sp?!) and some of the extra noises are v unusual. I too have videoed him to make my 'case', however shocking as it is to my family I sleep through all the commotion most of the time as so knackered but there have been times when a good kick gives me just enough of a window to fall asleep. The snoring literally starts as his head touches the pillow and eyes are shut and annoyingly he can fall asleep in 1 minute whilst it can take me 15-20 mins.. therefore best to get to bed before him!!! Can't believe so many of us with snoring Dh's!

if dealing with Landlord/lady direct we found actually emailing similar properties and their prices on dubizzle as evidence. We were in Dxb when the rents were stupid high but nevertheless we were pleasantly surprised that Landlady dropped it by 46% when we renewed the following yr!!!! no. of cheques is also a big incentive for LL to drop price edited by caduku on 08/01/2011

found loads of brown rice in LuLu's including short grain brown rice which is good for veggie sushi.. and brown jasmine rice, there was also brown risotto rice. Not cheap tho, about 18 dhs for 500g I think. spinneys sometimes has two types and worldmart too in the organic section HTH
