What about one of those boats, like GUGU. We attended a party there n it was amazing thanks will look into it... do they restrict the party to just two or three hours though? Ours was 2 hrs, but if you are a big number i am sure you can negotiate with them.

I just sponsored a maid from srilanka. She was here on a visit visa. Tried her for a month and then sent her back to get visa done. She came back after one month .... It took ages to get srilankan gov procedures done. Thank god its all done now. Secondly if you've got the budget...u can look at getting a live in maid from howdra/explorer. That way you pay a higher fee per month but atleast it gives u the peace of mind that if the maid is not settling in ...they would change her and give U another one. Unfortunately don't have a budget for Howdra style agencies, they charge 4000+ a month, which i think is insane.

Hi carambar, Mine left just after I delivered. I managed well until I went back to work. Don't worry too much about it. You hâve few months to find another one. If you know Arabic, there are lots of Indobesian maids who are willing to come and work hère. Otherwise, you CAN try to find one hère but it's not easy as they don't want to take care of babies. Good luck. I started looking for Indonesians, but the CVs are very poor so far, i have checked CVs from Al Ahlya, and a couple of other agencies. Don't want to risk paying 15000+ to the agency and end up with a disaster.

Carambar, Im not having any luck at all with getting the hair colour. I have been into every chemist and Pricline I can find and there is nothing, not even the mascara. Maybe 3rdtimelucky will have more luck. I'm so sorry. Thanks a lot littleone. I am so sorry you had to look in all those places for me with no lucy :( Really appreciate your efforts. It's a shame they stopped stocking it, it's by far the best stick i have ever used, have to find myself an alternative i guess.

I recently got a maid from Sri Lanka and she came in less than two weeks. We paid 10,000 in recruitment fees. Let me know if you would like to know more... Did she come in the post? lol LOL, you made me laugh although i am in a terrible mood right now Well Lolacat, the thing is i was working full time but due to some complications early in my pregnancy i had to resign, n was hoping to go back to work after the deliver so needed a maid + i have no family here, and friends and neighbors are all working so a maid is a must for me unfortunately. AnonDubai could you please share the agency contacts, do you know if they can bring Indonesians as well? edited by Carambar on 05/01/2015

I think giving money vs. access to a joint account depends on the financial situation of the family.. I mean what if the husband takes a good salary but has to save for rent, pay credit card/loan/...? In this case giving money is a better option to control spends. I would say have a talk and tell him what your personal spends are and ask if he can give more. edited by Carambar on 23/11/2014

Thanks Ladies. My current diet consists of the following: Breakfast: I get up at 6am and have a fruit salad & a natural fat free yogurt along with a litre of water Mid Morning: I either have a small bag of unsalted mixed nuts or 2 ryevita crackers with sliced avocado Lunch: I always have a salad with alot of mixed lettuce & veg along with some sort of protein ( usually chicken or tuna) Dinner: I always have either meat & mixed veg with a portion of carbs (size of my palm) or an omelet with a side salad. The only carbs I eat is sweet potato, brown rice or quinoa. The ONLY things I drink are water & green tea. I have a minimum of 4 liters of water a day. I had a similar diet after delivering my first child, except that i had 0 carbs, 0 sugar and 0 fruits in it :) I was allowed to have mayo and olive oil, and the dairy products didn't have to be low fat. It worked really well, i lost like 4 Kilos in the 1st week then 2 per week… My friend did the same diet and was able to loose like 22 Kilos over period of 2 months. He started to exercise after dieting for 1 month.

I quite my job a couple of months back as i had some complications (early pregnancy stage) and needed to have complete rest, but now I am extremely bored. I try to go out with friends 2 to 3 times a week but still it's not helping. For the ladies who are not working, how do you organize your day so that you don't get that feeling...

For heaven's sake - she is only 7!! Tutors, extra work, … am I alone in thinking "stop being so pushy"? Have you read articles about "Tiger mums"? She is probably scared to write anything in case it doesn't meet your approval. Take a step back and let her enjoy the whole experience of being a child. So school gives her one book a week - go to the library and let her choose, without you pushing an improving book at her. Let her choose something that appeals to her, even if you think it too easy. I have seen damaged children by mums pushing them too much too young, please let her enjoy being a child. Many countries only begin formal schooling at 6 years and they all level out by age 10 or so. Does she enjoy cartoon comics? Maybe you could have fun together printing pictures and writing a story line. This won't feel like work to her and will make the writing process fun. Well, honestly i don't like your judgment. You don't know me or know how i deal with my daughter to jump to your conclusions. She does pick her own books and we go back to pick others when she is done reading them. As for me being a tiger mum or whatever you wrote, i am sorry but i need to ensure that my daughter is at least at an average level. The school is useless, not helping in anyway, and even pushing it further with unacceptable statements, so i am doing it myself. Right now DD is in the lowest group in literacy and my target is to move her to average not more, not less! edited by Carambar on 08/11/2014

Totally agree Lolacat. This school is useless and i am looking for alternatives. I really feel sorry for the 45K that we spend yearly in this place. Thanks also for your tips, we've been doing that for a couple of months now, but building her own is not working that well yet looool I agree that the school books are rubbish. We get 1 book every week and finish it in 1 night. At first i asked if we could change it as soon as we are done reading it, but teacher refused saying school policy is to give 1 book per week!

@ Puffinlunde, of course not all 25 kids would need the teacher to ask them to hurry up. Lots of them work independently, and anyways when the kids are writing the teacher is not doing much during that time, so still don't see the problem in doing so. As for "unwilling to commit herself to paper until she has thought it all through" There are 2 things, 1) she simply does not like to make up stories, she does not find it challenging or interesting, 2) Yes she does tend to only start writing when she has a flow and knows exactly what what will go on that paper from A to Z. We already worked on that side of things n she has improved a lot in terms of speed (at home only though).

Thanks a lot for your post Lisylou, will def check them out. Which school does your child attend, i desperately need to change the current school as this is not the only issue obviously, but can't seem to find places anywhere. We've been on waiting lists for ages with no luck. Wouldn't hurt to make the school list longer, specially if they are supportive and caring :) edited by Carambar on 08/11/2014

No have not taken her to a doctor, as we only have this problem in literacy/writing, she is excelling and concentrating in other subjects Maths, science… etc She just hates to sit down and write a story and hence is not doing it at school (because she can get away with it). As for the teacher's time, i never asked the teacher to give her full attention/police her work and ignore the rest, all i asked is to make sure she writes. If she sees her daydreaming the least she could do is to tell her, hurry up, or finish your work, a couple of times during writing time. Teacher won't be doing much during that time anyways, so it's not too much to ask for.

She is 7, struggling in writing. I am already doing all i can at home, she gets a tutor twice a week and i sit with her to give her some ideas and examples as well. But it seems that once she is at school, when they ask the students to write something she just daydreams and not do it. I have already spoken to the teacher and she said there is nothing she can do as there are too many students and she cannot give her much attention. In my view, this should be handled at the school itself, as 1) i am not sitting with her in class, 2) they are in charge of the students, they need to ensure she is attentive at class and puts the effort to write, not just lets her daydream and blame it on the number of students. The discussion didn't start right off at the blaming level, rather "i want to know what i could do to improve her writing", and from the teacher's response i understood that she knows absolutely nothing about the level of my child as she suggested that i focus on her grammar (which is already good). So she kept going around in circles until it reached that point. Sorry my post is not that organized. Kind of furious with the school and panicking with the assessments starting this week (what if she lets her daydream in the assessment as well and end up taking a 0) :( edited by Carambar on 08/11/2014

They always bring Donuts instead of a cake at DD's school, which i think is easier to handle: no mess, no plates, n forks, all that is needed is a tissue box. As for goody bags, they fill them up with small chocolates n candy. You could also go to the 1 to 10 dirhams stores in Sharjah and get those tinny toys in a pack (cars, skate boards, Small bouncy balls, small nail polish for girls) and put 1 item in each as well. edited by Carambar on 07/11/2014

If showing that you have noticed doesn't alarm her, then maybe take it further… Tell her i would like you to search the whole apartment until you find item X, and by searching i mean tell her she would need to bring everything down and back in place until it's found, not just surface searching, n see what happens. I am not with telling you'd call the police, as she'll understand you are directly accusing her.

Why not simply ask her if she has seen it? If she says no, maybe tell could you please look for it maybe it fell here or there while you were cleaning. She doesn't have to give it back as you won't use it even if she does, but at least she'll know that you are alert and hopefully stop taking them.

Don't know (maybe rera) but have you heard of that new "rate the villa" website where you can let people know about problems in buildings or villas? Definitely post on it there! https://www.flatreviews.com/ Checked rera, but all their laws are around rent contract which does not cover such issues. I understand that any building is allowed to have maintenance work, but again that work should not last more than a month or 2, not 5 and still going. From our experience with current school, which we are changing as soon as we get a place in another, i see no difference between qualified and not qualified. They are both useless and not doing their job. Last year the Qualified Grade 2 class teacher recommended that i give tuition to DD as she was not doing that well in literacy. Education here is the worst. edited by Carambar on 20/10/2014

Sorry darlingboys for the highjack :) @ Nomad Agree. And I am not debating domestic vs. wild or marine. The way I see it is keeping any animal trapped (at home, in a zoo, in an aquarium…) is against nature and its will. Great relationships could form yes, but wouldn’t those animals still prefer to live with their own species… edited by Carambar on 20/09/2014
