The cut off when my children started school in our home country was Dec 31st. Early on we moved into the US system which had a Sept 1st cut off. Both of them just miss the Sept 1st cut off. During that move into the American system we had to make a decision. We had our youngest (who had just completed 3rd grade) assessed and she tested as a very very strong 3rd grade, average 4th grader. The school gave us the choice on where to place her. Since we knew she would be completing her education in this system (with this cut off date) we chose to put her back in 3rd grade so she would be older in class instead of the youngest. It was TRULY the best thing we ever did. Her confidence grew so quickly. We went from hearing "she is so bright and clever but doesn't focus very well, does not like to stay seated" etc.... to "Wow, what a mature bright young lady" during the Parent/Teacher interviews. It is not that she changed at all, it was that in relation to the rest of the students in class she went from being a year younger to the oldest in class! Our oldest was in 6th grade and we felt that it would be more detrimental to put her in with the right age group, so kept her where she is the youngest in class. She does fantastic academically still....but now that she is in High School and a teenager, I often wish so badly I had made the decision to put her back with the proper age group when I'd had the chance as her 'youngness' sometimes shows.. They are discovering teenage hormones, boys, freedoms, etc...and she's younger than most of her friends. Her skin was starting to break out as her friends were getting their hormones under control, her orthodontics were just beginning as many of her friends were getting theirs off...etc I guess what all my rambling on is meant to say is...that while it seems like it is a disservice now to have him wait an extra year, I strongly believe you will never regret the decision as he gets older. He will always be that bit more mature, more ready than his class. Physically he will be bigger, stronger, etc which will fare well if he is interested in athletics. ...and for REAL, when he's a teenager, it will be a benefit to him be older in class! edited by CdnExpat70 on 02/10/2012

I have been having digestive/gastro issues for a couple years - so many tests, elimination diets, etc with no relief. I started seeing Dr Rolef at the Healthbay Polyclinic in Umm Suqueim a couple months ago and finally have some answers! She's wonderful, very very thorough and has detected another issue as well (a cyst on an ovary that needs addressing by a Gyn). I'm so completely happy with her!

I'm impressed with nkd pizza's gluten free option. I watched the video that shows their gluten free dedicated area and the process they follow with a gf order. I ordered last night - 2 regular pizzas and 1 gluten free but with BBQ sauce. They were fantastic and called me to inform me that their BBQ sauce was not gluten free (it's ok for me, as I'm not coeliac, just sensitive to larger amounts of gluten/wheat), but I was thankful they called before processing the order! I prefer the taste of their ancestral blend regular crust - but their gluten free one was the best I've had so far (here or in the US) - the 1800pizza one I found to be very weak, not crispy and bland. So, I can confidently recommend the nkd pizza! Also, PF Changs in MOE has been great for us - they bring the gf dish out on a different looking plate so you know they were paying attention. Now, I'm not coeliac so some cross contamination would not really bother me or dd (so I'm not a good judge of how well they are doing in the kitchen), but our experience there was great. (PF Changs in the US is far better though and offers a complete gf menu). edited by CdnExpat70 on 15/09/2012

Last year we received some information at DAA - this was before it became illegal, but we were told it was about to be. I think (if I remember correctly) a number of students were expelled from the senior school for trying to sell it to students (don't remember the fine details) but the students were then given presentations in school on the dangers and the parents were made aware, etc.

Hmm, I checked also at MCC Carrefour with no luck. I think it should be season now - or soon anyway. I will try Lulus tomorrow. Missymoo - it's a great squash, when cooked I just scrape it with a fork and it forms spaghetti like strings. It's pretty tender and no strong flavour. I have had it italian style with bolognese sauce, but my favorite is with some feta cheese, olives, cherry tomatoes, onions and olive oil/balsamic. It's much easier to digest for me than most pastas. ***Edited to add my thanks for the suggestions!! :) edited by CdnExpat70 on 09/09/2012

When my oldest dd started, I also gave her the "day off" from school. We went to lunch, shopped for personal hygiene items (facial cleansers, make up, etc)...Then we had a bit of an uncomfortable talk about what this meant for her, growing up, what her body was now capable of, etc. We stopped for ice cream on the way home. It was actually a pretty special day for both of us. My youngest should be starting in the next year so I plan to do something similar.

When we left the US 18 months ago, we left our vonage behind and picked up a magicjack. It plugs directly into the computer (makes it easier if a v. p. n. is required, although we haven't needed one). MagicJack also lets you transfer your current US number. TinkerbellsMuse - any chance you could email the details of that router to CdnExpat70 at gmail dot com?

I also highly recommend Dr Omaima Ataya - her info is here http://www.medicentres.ae/doctors.html I found her very professional, she really listened to everything, asked a lot of questions to try to help get to the bottom of some issues with my daughter. She's one of the best we've seen in all the places we've lived.

I'm afraid I don't wear it curly too often these days - although with the humidity picking up, I'm going to have to get back into the routine. It always takes a while for the curls to look good again though, after I've been straightening it for so long! I struggle more with my curls since so many of them are now turning grey (at least that is what they would be if I wasn't getting them colored every few weeks), lol - the texture is harder to manage, and the curls have changed a bit. However, even when I'm straightening it regularly, I still only wash 1-2 times a week with the DevaCurl NoPoo, and just use conditioner in between. I find it just helps keep my hair healthier that way!

Thanks for the website...it's very helpful Did you try the no shampoo method before? I have, and I do it often - but the shampoo I use by DevaCurl is called "no-poo" lol - it doesn't lather or anything, so I use it periodically on my roots, especially when I've been exercising or have gotten real sweaty. I only ever use the shampoo maybe 1-2 times a week, just conditioner otherwise.

http://www.naturallycurly.com/ This is a fabulous website for guidance with curly hair. You can determine what type of curly hair you have and they can guide you from there, also lots of reviews on all sorts of products. Some basic rules of thumb when I wear my hair curly: - I blot it dry out of the shower with an old t-shirt of dh's - not a towel. Towels can cause more frizziness, wetter is better. - I apply my products (I am very very loyal to all the DevaCurl products, but have to stock up in North America when I am there as I haven't found them here) when the hair is still wet and I never comb, just use my fingers. I sometimes put a couple of clips at the roots of my hair in the front to help it dry with a little 'lift', not get so weighed down (my hair is fairly long). - Then I diffuse dry it or let it air dry. - Never rub it dry with a towel. edited by CdnExpat70 on 04/06/2012 edited by CdnExpat70 on 04/06/2012

Hmmm, we paid about 500AED to have a satelite dish installed for our Ethipian maid, she gets so many channels - all the arabic, ethiopian, etc and I have no monthly fee at all. Will see if I can find the receipt from the company with info - they may have a similar deal for the Philippine channels. The service was great, they were really helpful.

Being in O&G, we've lived in 3 different spots in Texas, and Houston TWICE! We still own our house in Sugar Land and have leased it out. It is an easy place to live really. Lots to do for the family, cost of living is so reasonable, schools are good, people are very friendly... As for working - if your husband is actually being transferred within the same company he will likely come in on an L-1 Visa, which means you will get an L-2 visa - one of the only spousal visas that allow for employment, so yes, you will be able to work. If he goes in with a new company and has an H1B visa, the spousal equivalent will not allow you to work. However, if you have your own qualifications (university degree, or healthcare industry, etc...) you may very well be able to obtain your own work visa (but this must be sponsored by your potential employer. As far as taxation, Texas is great for income tax (no state income tax), and if you do not own a property it will be even better as they get you on property tax in Texas - but at least in SW Houston (Katy, Sugar Land, etc) you can get a really good sized home, often with a pool for about $3500 rent a month. Our house is almost 4000 sq feet (actual square feet of living space, not like here in Dubai), with a salt water pool and spa-hot tub in a gated lake community and we are happy to get $3200/month rent. So housing is quite reasonable, eating out is much less expensive than here, and a great variety of both local and national chains and specialty restaurants. Pretty much every community has a local pool (but most are only open when they are lifeguarded by University students - so around middle of May until first weekend in Sept) - and the weather is very warm at least a couple months on either side of the community pool opening hours, so I recommend a private pool.

Does anyone know if there are any grace periods here? Can we delay renewing at all, then would we have a grace period to cancel and receive any of the money back, then how long would she have here before we could get her a new visa under our new sponsorship? I'm asking only for advice that is completely legal though. If its possible to not have to pay over 10000 dh to renew within a couple months that would be most helpful!

I think you cannot transfer within Dubai like that, but if you were to go back to the UK, they would likely enter your child with the proper age group (Year 3 instead of Grade 2) ***oops, I see Captain America has clarified it is now possible with exception here in Dubai. We had friends with us at the International School (US/IB program) in Australia and when they returned to the UK her daughter had completed 5th grade in Aus and went into Year 7 in the UK with the same age group (would have been entering 6th Grade in US program). edited by CdnExpat70 on 08/05/2012 edited by CdnExpat70 on 08/05/2012

I'm sure the Nespresso is good for convenience, but I don't see how it can deliver the crema that freshly ground beans will bring. And can you finesse the coffee? I mean don't you just push a button and it all happens for you? Before moving to Dubai we had a fantastic Saeco machine. When we were getting set up here I wanted a fully automatic double boiler but couldn't justify the insane cost here compared to overseas. We tried Nespresso from a friend and were sold. I find it makes a great crema, but I'm NO expert for sure, haha. Have you stepped into the Nespresso store to try it out - there is one in MOE and Dubai Mall. It seemed far too simple to us to produce good quality rich tasting coffee, but we love ours. As far as being able to finesse the coffee, it is true, you just push a button (1 for espresso, the other for lungo), but there are easy ways to adjust. The different coffees have very different finishes, so it's important to find the ones you enjoy. I find the automatic espresso and lungo settings are just right for our tastes, and we easily make an americano for friends who prefer it by just hitting the button twice to push more water through after the original process. According to the nespresso site, their coffee is roasted, ground then hermetically sealed within minutes to retain the freshness. We just don't do the entertaining here that we used to and it was hard to justify the added cost of the super-automatic machine we wanted, especially since we also had trouble finding good fresh coffee beans that we enjoyed here and proper service locations for the machines when they had troubles. We bought the Citiz with the milk steamer/frother and I find I get an even better proper foam with it than I was able to do with my super-automatic in Australia. I suggest that if you are at all still up in the air about it, go spend some time in the Nespresso Cafe/store before you entirely rule it out.

Its powdered coffee made with dried milk powder, only difference between Nespresso and a cheap packet of dried coffee/milk mix is the snazzy looking machine that costs a bomb. Each to his own, but I prefer real coffee. I'm pretty sure I would know if it had milk in it, considering I'm quite intolerant to dairy (not just lactose but casein as well), and I consume nespresso every day without reaction.

Yes! Thanks to a 20th HS reunion a few years back, I ended up with all sorts of nutters of my own. Go onto Nutters page and click on unsubscribe. THen, under your privacy settings, under your default settings click on 'custom' - then you can have your posts show up for all friends, and you can add nutter's name under the 'hide from' part....also on each post specifically, you can have the option of deciding who sees your posts. Facebook drives me crazy because they are always changing the process for privacy settings, but I play around enough to make sure that only those I want seeing my stuff are actually seeing it. Good luck!

I know a couple of families who moved the other way (from UAS to DAA) and are much happier at DAA (both the parents and the kids). I think you have limited options if its US curriculum/IB diploma that you want...but I think moving from one 'for profit' school to another, you will continue to face the same issues. If you are not interested in the IB, then there is ASD (they only offer US/AP diploma, not IB)...they are not for profit...however, their fees are still high. My daughters go to DAA (1 in elementary and 1 in Middle School), and I've been very happy academically, etc. They seem to mostly have involved teachers, great communication (in my experience so far), and I love the progress reports in Middle school that we get every 2 weeks so I know whether or not dd is keeping up with her work! I think if it is strictly a fees issue, then you do what you need to do as fees are so high here in Dubai, so I understand we all have our budgets...but if your main motivation is regarding issues with teaching, facilities, etc...you will find many of the same issues across the board with the 'for profit' schools...and DAA has more facilities on offer than UAS. Maybe that has changed but when we toured UAS last year, they still did not have their auditorium completed yet and they were candid with us that many of the facilities were not finished and they could not give a date since much was halted due to the economic downturn. Good luck with your decision!

We've been living out of Canada for so long now...so I learned to stock up on Canadian stuff from the dollar store on our summer trips - we have lots of bandanas, flags, etc...and always pick up some of the Canadian tshirts from The Bay or Zellers when we are back as well to have on hand each year. I always do Nanaimo Bars, unless I'm charged with something savory, then I do an appetizer with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and capers (on crackers)....but TimBits is a great idea!

I'm not sure if you have children and if schooling is an issue....but some lovely areas around there are: Wembley Downs, City Beach, Floreat (on the other side of Herdsman Lake area - nice park/picnic area), Wembley (we lived there, great access, close to Herdsman and Lake Monger)...farther north the suburb of Karrinyup is nice (nice shopping mall there) and Stirling... In Perth, pretty much most suburbs have nice park areas fairly close by. It's a fairly family friendly place. Herdsman Fresh was my favorite shop for fresh produce and meat/seafood. My children attended the International School of Western Australia which follows the US/IB program - they are in City Beach. Floreat Beach is a great beach for families (nice playground, etc), City Beach is also nice. At the time we lived there, we found Scarborough Beach a little wilder, so we spent most time at Cottesloe and Floreat. There are some really great park area for picnic/kayaking, etc by the river though (and really not that long a drive from any of the above suburbs I mentioned)! Good Luck!

I was reading all the responses on the other thread about people that were hearing it so clear all the way in Barsha and beyond...I am in Motor City Green community - and our villa is on the Autodrome side...and unless we were outside, we hardly heard it at all! Maybe they didn't scrimp on the quality of the windows or something...but truly, I could tell there was a race going on late that night, but definitely not loud enough to keep any of us up. (we had all the windows closed, mind you). I expected it to be a much bigger bother than it was from here. It was far more inconvenient that I couldn't find parking at the shopping centre to go to Spinneys!

I have 2 daughters at Dubai American Academy (Grade 5 and 8)...and we are very very happy there. We arrived half way through the school year last year, and it was a very easy transition for the girls, the kids were very welcoming and inclusive...and they've just loved it. In fact, my 8th grader could not wait to return to Dubai after the summer to start school and see her friends again. We chose it because it offered the IB diploma instead of the AP option which is offered at ASD. I have a good friend who's son is at ASD and it is lovely as well. We live in Motor City Green COmmunity, and the commute is not bad at all (of course traffic can be hit or miss at times around the school). My girls now take the school bus though. I've heard fantastic things about Bradenton Prep as well. It sure would be handy to not have a long school commute. You don't have as many discussions regarding the US curriculum schools because there really aren't as many of them (and in some aspects it's more like a '6 of one, half a dozen of the other' type of comparison), as the British curriculum schools are plenty and there can be a vast difference in the quality. If you are already here, then you are at an advantage to many - you can tour each school and decide which one fits all your overall needs best. Good luck in making your decision grace83! ***Meat One is not open yet. I spoke to someone there about a week and half ago and he claimed the opening would be this week, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

It is cheeky. We've taken on the responsibility and the expense to hire someone legally and it just chaps my hide to see people wanting to circumvent this - and possibly get myself and our housemaid in serious trouble as a result! To be honest, even with all the expense on our part to get her, I actually wouldn't mind her having the opportunity to earn extra income...provided her work here was completed - and if it were LEGAL!
