Thanks DT, yes it seems the avatars are not putting in an appearance so far except one person I think who managed to get one.... I am on the mailing list for Dubai but wanted to change to UK, seems that's not possible either.

Unless its marked non GMO its safe to assume it will be GMO, and as Daza says most processed food is. There is no legislation requiring manufacturers to declare genetically modified products. Avoid as much processed food as you can and eat organic homemade and whole foods wherever possible. You can download the app for a non GMO shopping guide here http://www.nongmoproject.org/find-non-gmo/iphone-app-shopping-guide/

Hello Mairam. Very sorry to hear your dad has to have spinal surgery. During the last 5 years I have had many experiences throughout Dubai following surgery L4-L5 and L5-S1 in 2010. I have also just undergone neck surgery C3-C4 and C4-C5 combined with shoulder surgery. I have been to many hospitals and surgeons throughout this time - I can't tell you about the bad ones but I would like to pass on a good recommendation. The latest surgery was at MedCare Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, Dr Hassan Khadri did the spinal surgery. He has also been helping me with my continued pain following the failed back surgery in 2010. I can thoroughly recommend him and all the team at MedCare Orthopaedic - it is just off the Safa Park junction of SZR.... the bronze building you can see from SZR. My first experience with Dr Hassan was 18 months ago when, I was still in severe pain after two major surgeries on my back and several other procedures like nerve blocks which didn't work, I had been looking for a solution and consulted with 6 difference spine surgeons, including one in England, and of these people Dr Hassan was the only one who said do not do any more surgery (others wanted to take out all current implants and start again). Now, following intensive physio and a few more nerve blocks I am almost pain free. This gave me huge confidence in his abilities. So, when I was experiencing problems earlier this year and he diagnosed failed discs in my neck, with severe prolapses, and said urgent surgery was required, I was 100% confident in his diagnosis. The surgery was carried out at the same time as major shoulder surgery - I have degenerative disc disease and severe osteoarthritis - and now, 7 weeks later, life is great! I always had cold hands and dropped things (thought I was just clumsy)... the surgery has cured this and now I keep wondering who these hot little hands belong to tucked up next to me in bed!!! I was given a full check up prior to surgery which included cardio and blood tests. The surgical team were great. The hospital is efficient and clean and very friendly. Physiotherapy is available in their own rehab suites just along the road. I can also recommend Dr Fariba at Advanced OrthoSpine Health Center, Al Wasl (near NBD) for Physiotherapy. I hope this helps. I know how very upsetting this news is for you all but there really is no need to travel and yes you are correct that being here will be much better as his abilities may be fairly limited for a while afterwards. Fingers crossed and prayers for your father. If you need any further info then please let me know. Just want to say what an informative, encouraging and heartfelt reply.

Frees up more space. Anyone tried the avatars? Mine still doesn't work. I have seen someone with one though. edited by Alismum on 22/11/2014 It takes time before the images will appear as they are manually screened so if you add one now it will not show up until admin are back in the office. Has anyone seen this here? or.. has anyone ordered it through Amazon and how much was the shipping??? and how about Hemp Powder/seeds??? thanks. Hemp power and seeds are on the UAE prohibited list so best not to try and order them from abroad. Holland and Barrett stock it in the UK but I would guess not in Dubai. They may have other types of plant protein though.

The ability to go back to the same dream is a sign of lucid dreaming, if you can also take control of what happens in your dreams? That's lucid dreaming too. I do both of these, it doesn't bother me at all and who is to say what's normal. If the dreams are not troubling you I would not worry.

It's from when they did the big site change. And the same thing happened before that in 2009 I think. It's quite annoying as all of the [strike'>legendary bunfights [/strike'> excellent information posted before then has all gone. You're right TB, even posts by admin only go back to 2011 so must be the revamp back then. By chance I came across a really hilarious old thread posted while the site was being upgraded so it was worth the search anyway! Yes, all the "excellent information" is lost and with it some real gems of rhyme too ;) edited by Di@DXB on 22/11/2014

In the UK my family used to never put up the tree or any decorations at all until Christmas Eve and they had to be taken down after the twelve days following Christmas Day. I think that's hardly done these days, but it seems way to soon to me to have the decorations and street lights up from early November.

As far as I know from friends who have done visa runs its pretty basic out there. there is not a lot at the Dubai Oman border, just a small immigration building with no public facilities. They only found a grocery shop on the Dubai side some miles from the border which was little more than a kiosk. When they entered Oman their phone credit was sucked up as soon as their mobiles clicked into Oman telecom. edited by Di@DXB on 19/11/2014

Look at the bright side... its a good news for the weight conscious and those who SHOULD be weight conscious.... ;) Not all chocolate is a bad thing, yes all chocolate has fat but all choc is not equal. Depends what chocolate you mean, the cacao in white and milk choc is diluted with a ton of fat and sugar and so has less cacao which is where all the goodness is, while a high percentage dark choc is low in sugar and salts, has fewer carbs and has more cacao and unsaturated fats. and minerals. Not to mention the serotonin! No need to feel guilty about chocolate, a square or two :) of dark choc a day is highly beneficial for health and mood.

I sold a car for DS a few years ago in his absence by power of attorney, i expect to transfer ownership from your husband to yourself will be the same proceedure as him selling it to you as far as the actual paperwork is concerned. I would think you could do the transfer if he gives you a POA specifically for that purpose. It was not difficult in our case, just a bit of additional paperwork to get the overseas POA approved and stamped by the embassy and foreign office here. Then the sale was done as usual at the Tasjeel.

There are chemical sprays of course but if you prefer to use a natural deterrent, cedar wood, is the best also clove, rosemary, mint and lavender all bother moths, so if you place some cedarwood balls with oil of cedarwood or some sachets filled with any or all of these it will keep them away from your clothes. You will need to wash all your clothes to get rid of them first and wash the cupboards out with a water vinegar dilution and the floors too.

Dubai Centre for special needs raises funds for children attending their centre by selling the donations, they get a lot of items that they cannot pass directly to the children for various reasons. I have looked for places that will accept toys directly but most charities and hospitals will not take them in my experience for health and other reasons. I doubt they are making mega bucks from their shop and raising funds this way is not unique to Dubai, Oxfam and many other charities worldwide have shops to process donations. Perhaps someone else will know of a charity that will take the toys directly if there is one here. edited by Di@DXB on 15/11/2014

TIA Dubai Centre for Special Needs will take any items for their charity shop. You can drop them off at the reception in their building near Safa park, not at the shop, call the main number to ask about timings for drop off its usually before 3pm I think. http://www.dcsneeds.com/ http://www.dcsneeds.ae/where.htm edited by Di@DXB on 15/11/2014

There are so many locally based website that deliver to the UAE it would be easier, quicker and more cost effective for them to buy direct off website in Dubai. Depending what sorts of gifts they want just search on Google for 'online shopping in Dubai' and look for the category such a children's or gift or locally made to find the sorts of links to send them.

Does anyone know of a reasonable supplier/company, Dubai /Abu Dhabi. Hi I have rented apartment in DG . Before the property was under Better Homes management but since October it under Asteco. And now Asteco sent me notification letter (2.5 month before my contract expire) and they divide my payment on two types - rent (4 checks) + utility (1 check) . Before I had only rent (4 checks) I just want to ask if they can do it? I was thinking if I renew contract it should be the same term and conditions (rent can be more but not more than on RERA calculator) I do not really good in law so I would appreciate if someone can give me good advice . Thx Not sure about the law, but I have had the same happen to me, my last new contract was offered with different number of cheque terms, I had no option it was take it or leave it. Have you asked Asteco if you can have the same number as before? I'd do that first before looking into the legality, maybe they will agree.

Sounds a really bizarre incident all round, you can go to the Traffic depts of both Emirates and try to lodge an appeal against the fine. I would think that would be really inconvenience going all the way to both different emirates with no certainty of success. In my experience of the Sharjah traffic dept in general its no picnic trying to do anything there, I have no idea about AD. Personally I would put out a query on their social media pages, I think you may get a quicker and better resolution, its worth a try anyway or call their hotlines (numbers on the web links below) and see if anyone can give you an idea of how to go about appealing. https://www.facebook.com/ShjPolice?ref=ts&fref=ts https://twitter.com/shjpolice @ShjPolice on Twitter https://www.facebook.com/AbuDhabiPolice?fref=ts hth

For holders of passports that are entitled to visas on arrival you can do an extension to the visa you came in on by going to the DNRD yourself or have someone take your passport for you. If you need to renew at the expiry of the additional visit visa you would need to do a visa run to renew again, subsequently you can then renew that visa when it expires by going to the DNRD and renewing as before, so you can alternate extensions by one renewal without visa run and one renewal with visa run, this can be done for as long as you need until you can get your residence.

@Di, I wasn't discrediting their originality; just mentioning the fact that they don't smell pleasant. It's up to the poster to choose which product she likes based on the recommendations given. Hi CB no I did not take it that way at all, for sure its a matter of personal taste, frankly I cannot say I like the smell of raw unprocessed Argan oil much myself as much as I am into organics! :) Was just explaining for those who may wonder why some oils and butters have a rather strong odor. edited by Di@DXB on 11/11/2014

When you bring food items across, packet mixes etc, do you just put them in hold luggage? Yes, you should be fine packing it all in the checked-in luggage. Spice mix won't get you in trouble. Customs will question you over pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and poppy seeds (for culinary use or otherwise) found in luggage. I smile politely and explain what kind of vitamins or pharmaceuticals I've brought in, and yes, the quantity is for my personal use and not intended to be re-sold. Poppy seeds, however, can land you in jail. Sobering thought that you could eat a bagel encrusted with poppy seeds in an airport cafe on departure somewher abroad and arrive in Dubai with some poppy seeds unknowingly stuck to your clothes or shoes and spend the rest of your life in jail. Same holds true for codeine which you can buy over the counter legally abroad but will result in arrest if a person is even found to have it in their system on arrival here.

Holland and Barrett carry good quality whipped shea butter. And to add, I have previously bought from Ripe and the smell was so repulsive I couldn't use it. I think theirs was mixed with argan oil. edited by Coffeebean on 10/11/2014 True Argan oil does not have a smell that everyone likes, but the fact that it smells actually shows it is the real undenatured oil rather than the processed oils that have the life stripped out of them by chemicals. Likewise Shea butter when its unprocessed and raw sometimes has a strong smell, the smell of pure natural products is often not agreeable to those who are used to commercially prepared cosmetics. Synthetic fragrances can smell much better than raw nature but are toxic, such as L'Occitaine shea butter which you pay so much for and is really no better than a jar of Vaseline for all the goodness that's left in it.

Yup, all traffic fines and payment for it are on the car seller! I also spoke from personal experience, both as car seller and buyer! And last was just a month ago  Sold mine just about a month ago too and the buyer paid the technical test so obviously its something that can be negotiated if you take the initiative. (Of course parking fines are on the car owner, its just sometimes you really are not the one at fault when you get fined, again from experience for example like when you are waiting for someone who asked you for an urgent favour so you kindly wait after voluntarily bringing something across the world for them, and they make you late cos they don't show up or apologise for not coming and then don't have the decency to offer to pay the fine they were the cause of ;) )

The technical check for the car should be paid by the seller not the buyer. It is valid for a month and once you decide to sell the car you can do it not to lose time the day of the sale. Is around 130 Dhs and I would advise to go there in the early morning as is pretty crowded. Once you have the buyer all procedure is done at RTA. Make sure you have all car documents with you, your ID as well as the buyer has his ID as well. But I think if the buyer is from another emirate, then the procedure is slightly different! Tasjeel or RTA can advise you about this. Do NOT sell the car unless cash/ manager's check (better cash) is handed over!!! Good luck! edited by simoralu44 on 10/11/2014 The technical check was paid by the buyer the last time I sold a car, so perhaps its open to agreement. My post is speaking from experience, also in my experience parking tickets are on the owner of the car too regardless of how they were incurred ! ;);) edited by Di@DXB on 10/11/2014
