I had my car valeted at Yellow Hat, behind Times Square, they were excellent and not expensive either. They also kindly buffed out some minor scuffs too FOC.

I bought some really pretty white drop shaped chain lights last year from Tchibo and some smaller ones at Home centre in Oasis centre too. They may have them again this year too. Home centre had lots of them. edited by Di@DXB on 10/11/2014

Likewise the way people park straddling the line taking up two places, cut you off, tailgate, push in at lights from the wrong lane and all other prevelant poor driving habits and arrogant manners that prevail. If you want 1st world driving standards and ettiquette you will not find them in Dubai! Just another thing that reminds me how happy I am to be in a place where common courtesy on the roads is a norm rather than an exception. edited by Di@DXB on 10/11/2014

Once you have a person who wants to buy it, it's usual to take a deposit to ensure they are not time watsers if you are setting a later exchange date from the day of agreeing to sell. About 5k is normal. You then need to meet the buyer at the RTA Tasjeel to do the transfer, the car will require to be tested for roadworthyness as a first step. This is done by the RTA testing bay and there is a fee which either seller or buyer may pay as agreed. Once you have the car in the test bay you go into the building and take the forms from the reception desk and get a number and await the test results which are delivered to a window, you are informed of your test result by your ticket number, once you have this if it is a lady is selling or buying you take a number to go to the lady counter where you will be served more quickly. At the counter you will need to have car ownership card, your driving licence, the forms filled and the payment ready. They will check for any outstanding fines on the car and these must be paid before they will transfer the ownership, its best to go online and check for fines in advance before going to tasjeel. The transfer will be done quickly if all is in order, insurance for the new owner is required before the transfer can be made and can be purchased in the premises if it has not been prearranged elsewhere. If the buyer is not changing the number plates buyer then show the officer the funds and hand them to the seller. The transfer is completed usually within minutes buyer then goes to another counter to receive his new ownership, seller should make sure to cancel the Salik for the sold car to ensure no further charges go to his account. Remind buyer to buy Salik too! I thinks that's about it, hope that helps :) edited by chezmoi on 18/02/2015

I used to have a maid come once a week and after being let down lot's of times I decided to do all my own house chores. (As I would in the UK) And to be honest I find it very rewarding running my home home and working full time, if you can do it yourself then do it There is no one to disappoint you and things are done they way you want them done  Agree, never have employed one or wanted one, I did have the luxury of not having to go out to work so I understand some mothers have no other option sometimes for a maid/nanny but I never liked the idea of anyone cleaning my house for me, on the rare occasions I had to have one from an agency to clean when I was injured or ill it always ended up more annoying than the messy house, could not tolerate facecloths used in the toilets and then used to wipe kitchen tabletops etc. Tried a few over the last 15 years for emergency situations and was always let down with bad results. As Stacey says no one is going to do things as well as you would yourself.

It must be the very minor changes that add up over the years as Stacey says, I haven't been eating more in Dubai or exercising less, not that I go to the gym but I do take the stairs in preference whenever possible, and I do have a good walk most days, however in Dubai its mall walking and at home its outdoor walking, that must be the key. I don't eat out at all, never go to brunches, don't drink, I do my own housework and eat really healthy, don't like sugar and fast food, so it has been a bit of a mystery to me as to how the infamous Dubai stone caught up with me but thinking on what others have mentioned its the extra walking we do back home that makes a huge difference over time. So even the slightest activity change adds up over the years and translates into weight gain regardless of eating habits. I think what is really needed in Dubai is an outdoors climate we can use all year round! Congrats to all who managed to lose weight!

I would be happy to send a few packets of Oxo cubes or Bisto or other small items to anyone in exchange for a couple of small items I want from Dubai, the value and postage would be about the same for each if anyone would like to do a small swap of anything they cannot find in Dubai. I want some herbal toothpaste I cannot find in the UK right now. :)

The vendors at the craft markets are covered by the event license, Arte do have rules for food and the Ripe markets require vendors to have Municipality clearance and trade licenses. You could enquire about selling at either of these markets or at the Wafi and Town Centre Mall markets too where there may not be requirements for trade licences..

Not my kids party but was a guest at a friends birthday party held in McDonalds, a place I might add I have never eaten at and never will, anyway it started off ok with a bit of fun and games for the kids all about four or five years old and after they had finished their fries and burgers the cake was brought out by a man in a Barney costume singing along with staff all singing happy birthday, the birthday child himself was completely terrified of the the dressed up character and began to scream blue murder as Barney approached. the guy inside Barney hesitated and stepped back tripping over a chair and fell splat into the cake obviously hurting himself in the process as he then proceeded to roll around on the floor groaning in pain while birthday boy went hysterical. All was caught on video which was kindly sent to our friends a few days later, we still watch it today just for laughs. edited by Di@DXB on 27/10/2014

As londiamond explained you will need a trade license and a registered company to sell your products. This is obtained from the Economic Dept, there is a handy wizard on their site that can help you estimate your start up costs depending on your type of buisness. If you run your details through it will give you a good idea of what will be required and costs. For example in your case in the first window you scroll down to 'Comm Foodstuff supply' then follow the prompts on each section. Go to e-services then click on estimated cost of issue licence http://www.dubaided.gov.ae/English/eServices/default.aspx

Expats cannot run businesses from home at all, for food products you can sell them at some of the market and craft events such as Arte and Ripe but you do need a licence from the Municipality as mentioned.

Di@DXB - Wow, I've never heard of using coconut oil to treat acne before. I did a bit of Googling, and like you said, it does have lots of positive reviews. Question: how do you incorporate the coconut oil into your skincare routine? Do you cleanse with something else first and then apply coconut oil afterwards to moisturize? Or does the coconut oil double as a cleanser and moisturizer? Many thanks x It doubles perfectly as a cleanser and moisturiser, you can use it solely as one or the other of course as you prefer. I use it neat as both and make other formulations with it too adding other natural ingredients depending on what I want such as shea butter or cocoa butter too. For acne I would just stay with the pure virgin coconut oil. On a side note its possibly relevant that back in the days before mass produced synthetic cosmetics the original cold creams used were used as all round cleanser and moisturisers, they were vegetable based oils such as coconut oil rather than from petrochemicals of the commercial cold creams of today, and these natural creams were the only form of cleansers and moisturiser around that our grandmothers and great grandmothers would have known, I certainly recall my grandmothers both having gorgeous complexions, I'm sure it was because of a more natural lifestyle including non synthetic skincare among other factors.

If you don't especially need a landscape gardener I would think a handy man would put up a fence on a wall easily enough. The one we have used does all kinds of work, including wooden framing and brickwork jobs etc. Should be a lot more cost effective than a landscape gardener too. Coconut oil is an excellent cleanser for acne, although its a oil it does not clog the pores, in fact it can help keep them clear, it's soothing, anti microbial, ant inflammatory, healing and moisturising. Well documented for control and management. Only use the best extra virgin coconut oil you can find.

Having tried most of the couriers in Dubai I'd say Aramex rate among the worst for delivery timing reliability. They consistently do not show up as stated by their SMS, more than once I have waited in the house for three whole days on empty promises in spite of multiple phone calls to them only to have the delivery guy file that I was out. They frequently do this when they can't be bothered to show up at all.

I also found the bleaching method too painfull and had to give up after one application and thought I was going to have to opt for veneers or just live with the shade of my teeth. But a month ago I came across a herbal product in the UK that causes no sensitivity and is non abrasive so I gave it a go, it is not a teeth whitener in the class of the chemical ones as its herbal made from some kind of lichen, its more of a stain remover, but I have seen noticeable improvement in the whiteness of my teeth after one month of use and its completely non irrititating. Not sure if this product is available in Dubai yet, but thought I'd pass this on for those who cannot tolerate the chemical bleaching or the expense as as soft option to getting some improvement. I am really pleased with the results. Perhaps you can order it online for delivery to Dubai. Here's a review http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=73D40akL7_E This is the product website http://www.blanx.co.uk/products/blanx-white-shock-treatment-30ml-led-bite

Have you left us Di@Dxb? :( Hope life is treating you well. Thanks for the info. I don't colour either but may be forced into it if I keep finding stray greys!!! :/: What about henna - is that any good, or does it just wash out? YesTB, sweet of you to ask, I have moved back home now, although I will be visiting Dubai for sure from time to time, After decades in Dubai it's a huge change but really enjoying the cool fresh air and countryside, went blackberry picking yesterday and watched the sunset over the hills, simple pleasures that I have missed for so long, not to say that I disliked Dubai, but I'm finding the more relaxing pace here suits me so much better. Hope things are cooling down there a bit by now. X Di P.s. sorry I have no experience with henna it seem give rather heavy shades, and I have heard it's difficult to remove and to use other types of colours after using it. edited by Di@DXB on 05/09/2014

Hi TB, nice to be remembered! :) Unfortunately I have no colour in my hair at all and am happy to just leave it as it is! But if I was to colour it I would probably go for one of the more natural least chemical formulas out there or try this new organic colour system, not sure if its available in Dubai, seems to be in some salons in the US, you could ask around I'm not in DXB now so no idea, but it looks promising. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/17/organic-hair-dye_n_4597190.html

Can anyone recommend a good removal company for a complete house move within Dubai? Thank you :-) Friends about to use Fly Movers this weekend, will let you know how t goes for them, its a short move within Dubai How did you get on? I used Fly Movers today for the second year running and they always do a good job no matter how big or small. And definitely the most reasonable out there! Sorry for the delay getting back, they were excellent and did the move very quickly and efficiently which we thought may have been problematic due to it being still Ramadan but it all went perfectly and no damage or hiccups at all.

I can't believe they named her! I didn't think that was allowed because of the slander laws here. It's great she's been named and pictured for everyone's protection. I know of 3 more big-time fraudsters. 2 have left the country but one is still here. Wish I could name them but I don't dare. edited by Wednesday Genius on 17/07/2014 It's amazing they have named her, but perhaps they had the ok to do so since she has a criminal record already and is clearly here to con more people. What I do not understand is how is it that known fraudsters like her are at liberty to come here and do this, I know of another such case where the person has repeatedly defrauded many people, including someone close to me, yet he is allowed to remain resident here even though he has a criminal record both here and abroad and has been brought before the courts several time for money offences including bounced cheques, each time he is simply released back into society to do it again after a short spell of incarceration. There does appear to be a discrepancy between the way the law deals with an individual who defrauds another individual and someone who defrauds a bank or company. I always thought the law comes down hard on all debtors here, but in fact when a person is defrauded they is actually no mechanism applied within the system for forced restitution of the stolen funds nor any meaningful punishment against the perpetrator who can simply elect to do time in lieu and very shortly be out scott free to repeat the same. These con artists have understood this very well and are working the system to their illicit profit. Moral of the story is, when someone gives you a cheque as security for a private loan, its actually a pretty worthless piece of paper. Lender beware. edited by Di@DXB on 19/07/2014

Hi, Port Saeed is a very bustling area of the city and very lively in its own way, but a very different feel of Dubai from other parts of the city. Have you visited this area with a view to living close to DH's work? For alternative community living you could look at somewhere like Shorooq/Mirdif - DH could metro but would still need to taxi back and forward to the metro stations. Is there a reason why both of you won't drive - it's quite normal for one of you not to have a car but for both of you and a baby it might be tricky, bear in mind the heat, waiting around for taxis, safety etc. Welcome in advance! Spot on TB! I would be very concerned to live here with a baby without a car and dependent on taxis where no infant seat is available, as you say public transport still entails getting to the metro or bus station and in this heat for a baby it would be unbearable.

Hi ValineC and welcome to this forum. You mentioned big dogs, any specific breed? There is a law in Dubai where dogs like the GSD, Rottweiler (BSL type dogs) are not allowed to live in apartments in this city, not because they are aggressive but because they need space. While there are people who do own these types of dogs and do live in apartments, it all depends on one's landlord and if the building management permits it. Living with dogs in an apartment is absolutely doable as long as the dog gets the required exercise. There are many daycare facilities in Dubai where you can drop your dogs before work and pick them in the evening. This way they are supervised, socialized and stimulated. For a budget like AED 55K you will find it difficult to find a place in Dubai but do register yourself at [b'>Nakheel's 'The gardens'[/b'>. It's best to look at the northern emirates where you would be able to find a great apartment for this budget. Make sure, where ever you do take an apartment that your landlord specifies that dogs are allowed in that apartment and it's mentioned in your tenancy contract. This will safe guard you from hassles in the future. There are many dog owners who have had to move out of Dubai because of the rising rents but have found villas and apartments in the northern emirates which allow dogs. The commute is doable as thousand do it everyday. All the best. Actually dogs are not permitted at the Gardens, there are some people who keep dogs living there but they are breaking the term of their leases, so you would be running a risk if you got an apartment in The Gardens. I happen to know that from a friend that it only takes one neigbour to report you and you would be obliged to get rid of the dogs or move out. In any case waiting lists for gardens apartments are pretty huge and I think rents begin at over 55k pa. So it would probably not suit you anyway. This article may help, although its not recent and things have changed in the Marina, most of the other areas suggested as dog friendly still are as far as I know. http://gulfnews.com/business/property/uae/a-pick-of-the-best-paw-friendly-areas-in-dubai-1.889126 edited by Di@DXB on 19/07/2014

So they fixed the problem that you took it in for and while on their premises it has developed another problem that did not ever exist before it went to them? If that is the case, I can only think you could contact the DED and file a complaint there, however you need to put the issue in writing to the garage first, and then if not satisfied with their response, you contact the DED. They will not act unless you have tried to resolve it yourself and failed. You will also need any paperwork you have that indicates it went in for just one problem not the new problem they want you to pay for now, they are wrong not to have consulted with you about the new problem and should have taken your ok for the additional repairs before doing them. Unless you gave them carte blanche to do any work required, they should not have taken it into their own hands and bill you out of the blue. So put it in writing to the garage and see what they come back with, probably best to find out the name of the manager or owner and write to him. You can file a complaint online here if that gets you nowhere. http://www.consumerrights.ae/aspx/about/contact.aspx edited by Di@DXB on 13/07/2014

If its a wool carpet then the guys at the store are right, it will be ok soon, wool rugs tend to shed for a few months,it should eventually stop. There's not much you can do other than what you are doing already, vacuuming every other day, if you can move it to an area where it get less foot traffic that would help. Its just a matter of time unfortunately.

You can buy skin tone knee highs at Carrefour MOE, I buy loads when I need to get new ones. Yes, thanks Marroosh, I have tried those but find them a bit too flimsy, they don't last a day with me! I need the slightly higher denier ones. Strange, the ones I have are quite high denier. Some of the brands they have are very flimsy yes, but the ones I found, and that was quite recently, are much thicker. Obviously I must have missed those, thanks will look there again. :)

Agree and not to mention a pyramid scheme too which has been the subject of an enqury in some countries which is why they are moving towards this region big time. Very interesting. Someone was desperately trying to get me involved in this (obviously as they get commission) but I had huge concerns over the legalities of it. They said that it is all above board to be employed by them as the parent company has a TL at the airport free zone but when I looked in to it (just out of curiosity wasn't actually interested in joining the scheme!) there didn't seem to be any labour cards issued. I felt that the whole scheme is actually absolutely nothing to do with the products - only about this 200 GBP that the person pays when joining up, the starter pack. Then everyone down the line gets a cut of this 200 GBP. Then you get someone else to sign up and they pay the 200 gbp and it just keeps going and going. DH bought some toothpaste from someone at work and it's alright, but out of principle I wouldn't buy any from someone who is working for a company who is trying to fly under the radar and not provide proper docs! Good thing you gave it a miss, as you say, the products are nothing special and very overpriced plus MLMs and Pyramid schemes never make anyone on the downline any money, beside the latter being outside of the law in this country.
