Thanks for the link CP, very moving to hear how all these people struggled and sacrificed to reach their hopes and dreams. Dubai has indeed offered opportunities to many who would have had little chance elsewhere. Inspirational.

hope this article is true.... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/30/world/asia/dog-meat-festival-is-canceled-in-china.html?_r=0 Its dated September 29, 2011 and is about a different festival to the current one about to take place in Yulin this Sunday. Sadly this shows clearly nothing really has changed since 2011.

I don't think divorce will provide eligibility, to my knowledge its only for one parent if the other has passed away. Best check with AMER on that as our case was on grounds of being widowed.

In a previous role I worked with a Syrian and he was more than happy to allow me to eat and drink in front of him. In fact he positively encouraged it as he said it made him feel better :) As far as my friend is concerned it seems to be HR making her feel bad as an email has gone round the office asking us to stop eating and drinking at our desks. Although on checking with her colleagues there is no one fasting on her floor. [i'>"In fact he positively encouraged it as he said it made him feel better "[/i'> Exactly, that's the fasting spirit I am familiar with in my own experience. And I would add that it is truly humbling to be in the presence of such faith.

What puzzles me a bit is the fact is many Muslim countries do not close restaurants or ban eating and drinking in public in Ramadan, life goes on normally for non fasting and those who are observing have no issues seeing it. I have noticed in such countries there is still a beautiful spirit and feeling of sharing the month that can still be enjoyed by everyone including non Muslims. No disrespect intended but given that so many people from the Emirates who fast actually leave Dubai especially for Ramadan and spend the month overseas in non Muslim countries where there are no restrictions to prevent them seeing food and drink being consumed in daytime, it would appear many locals do not have any issue with it at all, so I wonder why the need for the official ban in Dubai when so many Muslims choose to avoid Dubai and go abroad for Ramadan to countries where its not observed. Most Muslims you ask say they not to be concerned with public eating as they are used to seeing their children, elderly or pregnant family members eat throughout the day at home. Obviously this is just my personal perspective, I respect the opinion of anyone who believes such a ban is preferable, but I do think the workmates are being over zealous in preventing a pregnant lady from taking water.

The article is out of the mirror .... I would question the validity seriously Seriously???? Its all over the news globally! Sadly not untrue, it just happened the first news link I found was from the Mirror but if you think they falsified the whole story here are other mainstream media reports if you prefer to take your news elsewhere. No unfortunately separated parents will not be allowed on parental sponsorship. Not sure why they place that restriction as its usually the mother who wants to join family here and you would think they would allow that at least.

Not sure if the rules have changed but the last time we went through this process it was required to have a minimum salary of 20k, a minimum of two bedroom accommodation, a letter from sponsors embassy or consulate attesting to the inabilty of the parent to support themselves and the sponsor being the only person available to them to do so. Documents such as salary certificate and copies of rent contract required. Health insurance may be necessary now too. It is only possible to sponsor both parents except if the other is deceased. A deposit of about 2k is required for each and the decision to approve is purely a discrectionary humanitarian decision which may, as it did for us, require a personal attendence interview. The first thing to prepare is the letter from the consulate, then take that with all the other docs and passports to immigration.

First of all, every animal you eat could be considered tortured - have you seen how our animals are treated before they are killed? They're not frolicking in the meadows, that's for sure. And second, food is food, right? And while it might not be to your taste, I think it's wrong to criticize someone else's culinary habits. Particularly since I live in a culture that bans eating ***, while I happen to love a bit of bacon in the morning. People living in glass houses and all ... the festival probably serves an important purpose in reducing the number of stray dogs and cats in the community while feeding people who might not get enough to eat normally. As a matter of fact I don't eat meat so your glasshouse comment is misdirected. You are missing the point, its not culinary preferences, its the torture and horrendous way they are killed that is the issue being objected to here. All animals have a right to humane treatment regardless of whether they need culling or not. The fact that there may be too many stray dogs and cats does not warrant skinning and boiling them alive and torturing them to make them taste better for people who have a taste for dog or cat meat. Would you skin a p*g alive to make your bacon tastier?

Why? Why is eating a dog or a cat worse than eating a cow or a chicken or a *** for that matter? Do you deliberately torture cows and chickens and skin them alive to make them taste better? So your logic is if cows, **** and chickens suffer its ok to do the same to dogs and cats, although there is no comparison between how the dogs and cats meet their end in this "festival" and the methods Livestock are killed in most countries.

The annual dog eating festival is to take place this Sunday in China. Thousands of dogs and cats will be tortured and killed to be eaten. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/ricky-gervais-slams-horrible-china-5894786 A global petition is being hosted to try to influence Chinese leaders to end this barbaric festival that targets pets and strays alike. Chezmoi, Marsbar and the others, have you seen any of this cream around in the shops? Looks like a miracle cream from the videos I have seen, blurs your wrinkles, what do you think, have a look at the video below???? It's from L'Oreal. [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5TmUS3x69s'>L'Oreal Miracle Blur Review Video[/url'> To be honest I have not seen it but then I've not looked for it either. Basically this type of product that claims to instantly erase wrinkles uses silcone as a filler and light reflecting particles as a camoflage and can be effective depending on your skin type. It does not eradicate wrinkles permanently, it only hides them, which could be handy if it works. As for the ingredients its rated fair in terms of organ toxicity the main concern being the silicones, it has a high percentage, which is bio accumulative in the body and the eco system, so personally I would avoid it. If you do try it take care not to use it on broken skin, you dont want silicone in your bloodstream. Thanks Di, I had a look for this product Boots/big supers etc) and couldn't find it. If anyone sees it on their travels please let me know (Miracle Blur from L'Oreal). I did get this one from Boots http://www.humanandkind.com/skin-shop/anti-ageing-cream/ It's a natural product from Ireland (the sales assistant recommended it but not sure whether she saw me coming ;) ). I normally use almond oil, but thought I would splash out on a good face cream. Not sure if I made a mistake though. It's pretty thick and greasy. Will report back if it's any good. Yes, keep us posted on how you get on Alismum, I have not tried that one either but would guess the sticky feel is due to the proportion of emulsifier and glycerin in the product, At first glance it appears to be an all natural product as they proclaim on their advertising and ingredient list [url=www.humanandkind.com/ingredients/'>link[/url'> It looks all plant based. There seems to be a fair proportion of plant extracts in the product. What seems encouraging is it contains a plant extract that has an effect similar to botox, (Acmella Oleracea) this is said to work by temporarily paralysing the facial the muscles reducing their ability to move and form wrinkles. There is no benefit to collagen only a temporary effect as with the L'Oreal Blur, so it could be effective for an instant lift and safer than a synthetic silicone based product. Looking at the product further I found the full ingredients list tucked away on another tab, not sure if its visible on the actual packaging, many of which are synthetic, most benign, but what concerned me most is the Parfum or Fragrance, I am surprised that product aiming and proclaiming itself to be all natural puts such a well known skin irritant in their products and fails to state this on the main ingredients list or advertising, [url=www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/702512/FRAGRANCE'>link[/url'> Interesting to note that Humankind is made in the republic of Ireland. Although EU law bans the use of synthetic fragrance in cosmetics without detailed description identifying the exact substance on labels due to the prevalence of allergic reactions to these compounds. HK fail to abide by this regulation. [url=www.skinsmatter.com/eczema_and_skin_conditions/pers_care_prods/articles/fragrances-gazzola-11-12.html'>link[/url'> Unfortunately many brands use the hidden ingredient label or tab marketing ploy, a prime example being BodyShop who have an outer label listing all the natural ingredients but if you pick the edge with your finger it lifts up to reveal the full chemical list on a hidden label underneath. Then again L'Occitaine completely fail to mention the inclusion of synthetic fragrance in their "100% Natural Shea Butter", along with the fact that the butter is processed rendering it lifeless, good as barrier cream but certainly no longer live. To be fair the balance between the plant extracts and the chemicals in the HumanKind cream is probably better than many others, but personally I lose trust in brands that falsely claim to be 100% natural. I think this is more than a little deceptive and annoying when obviously customers are probably looking for an all natural product; having said that though such a thing only exists in a raw un denatured oil or nut butter as it comes from the plant or tree. Do let us know if you get better results than with your pure Almond oil please :)

If I may suggest, maybe it would be more effective to post this on the other countries forums too to direct those asking questions about the UK over. Most people usually visit the Dubai forum with their UK related questions and don't look at the UK forum so may not even come across this thread. And it took me a couple of minutes to actually find the country advice for the UK so for those who are looking here's the link http://www.expatwoman.com/uk.aspx

Was he swimming without pool shoes or socks? It could be friction from the concrete surface of the pool if he was floating maybe in a life jacket and rubbing his feet along the bottom of the pool. If the skin is open put an antiseptic dressing on it, if not leave it in the open air to dry naturally and don't burst it and tell his mother to get him some pool swim shoes for next time as a precaution. hth

We never had one return the same day, I did a couple of renewals from Dubai last year, the old passports both arrived about a week later after the new ones also by courier, I think one of them was almost 10 days after the new one arrived, so it should be with you soon. The passport office will be getting busy now with the usual summer flood of applications, it will take longer as the holidays near.

Congrats GE you have done well Avoiding the sound of the deadly knell Thats quite an achievement especially these days Navigating the rules can feel like a maze 4 thousand posts yet alive and well You must have quite a tale to tell We all walk the tightrope with fear in our eyes For the slightest faux pas can bring our demise Oft when our post count is nearing its might A ban comes upon us, what a fright Oh the shock of trying to log in Only to realise our names in the bin The trauma and horror of being locked out We cannot even bang on the door and shout To let everyone know we're out in the cold There's no other option but to make so bold And re join again in another persona But Its so much harder over and over And then we return all new and reborn Treading with care but a little forlorn If only the mods could feel our plight They might not so quickly snuff out the light Our plea is quite simple and to keep to the point We're not trying to put any nose out of joint Our relapses infrequent and mostly quite random Its not like we err with total abandon Indeed most of the rules we vie to uphold When spammers attack we do readily scold We care for the forum as well as the mods We certainly wont let it go to the dogs But light-hearted relief is surely not bad So please could sometimes a little be had? The odd bit of rhyme wont cause any woe I don't understand why its a no no And a fun TNT could increase the fold For the rest of the time we'll do as we're told ?

I'm surprised they are being introduced at all, they are illegal in many countries where they are considered confusing and distracting not only because police and emergency vehicles use flashing lights to identify a situation where motorists may be required to move aside or slow down. As far as tailgating is concerned they do not solve the problem if the car behind is too close, pulsating lights can have adverse effects on the brain too in some people, if everyone has them its going to be blinding, imagine being on a motorway full of flashing strobing tail lights, it would be very irritating to say the least. I think the extra solid red brake light bar in the rear windscreen is useful but definitely not brake lights that strobe in pulsating extra bright flashes. They just look like the sort of add on that young drivers do to make their vehicles different, like those annoying flashing wheel rims. I really hope they don't allow all motorists to use them the roads are dangerous enough in Dubai as it is.

Thank You so much for the recommendations. ill check them out And yes I'm a Muslim and will be fasting InshAllah :) I definitely think its too commercial and can never eat so much but I would just like to give it a try as (for once) it is my first Ramadan. [b'>Back home all the food leftovers are passed on to the food bank as they have an agreement with almost all hotels. Even at my wedding we did the same, food bank trucks come pickup the food just after the wedding. I hope they do the same here[/b'>. All the leftovers from the hotel buffets are tossed in the garbage regardless of whether the dish is untouched or not, This is because the Municipality health regulation prohibits any food that has been on open buffet for a maximum of four hours from being recycled. The competition between hotels to lay on the most lavish spread to be the best Iftar contributes to the enormous amount of waste generated by hotels and restaurants who cook way in excess of what is consumed nightly at open buffets. In fact food waste increases by 55% in Ramadan according to this report [url=http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/uneaten-food-makes-up-half-of-waste-in-dubais-landfills-each-day-during-ramadan'>link[/url'> This topic comes up every year. In recent years the media have reported showing photos of whole untouched legs of lamb and mountains of freshly cooked rice and other complete trays of food and unused loaves of bread in hotel trash bins. You would have thought it could at least have been used for animal feed rather than ending up in a landfill. Not wishing to discourage if you wish to try a hotel Iftar, but in answer to your hope for recycling of leftovers unfortunately the buffet leftovers will not be taken to food banks or the needy. http://gulfnews.com/news/uae/general/too-much-on-their-plate-such-a-waste-1.847040

It depends on how you hold the can, if you squirt it out at an angle you will release more gas than needed for each serving and then be left with cream in the can and no gas to expel it. You need to hold the can completely upside down after shaking it well and squirt it out from a vertical angle. This should solve the problem :)

Why are you allowed to give a 4 week old baby gripe water when they are not even allowed a few sips of cool boiled water? You would only give 5ml of Gripe Water occasionally with a dropper, not sips of it to drink like water. Its a medication not a drink. edited by chezmoi on 05/05/2015 Obviously I know that. I was not being sarcastic, I didn't know if you knew that or not and. possibly anyone not familiar with Gripe Water might think it some kind of drinking water for babies due to the name sounding like its some kind of water. No offence intended. Hope you find some.

Son is only 3, so is he too young for a medical? I'll try and contact my PRO tomorrow for clarification. perhaps I am getting confused with the wording. As for the mother only sponsoring the son under certain circumstances, I don't think this is correct. I have looked into it and as long as I'm a teacher (check), earn over 10k AED (check) and father doesn't object (check), I'm in the clear.. Unless the guidelines have changed in the last month then I should be ok. As for the EW FAQs page, I had read it but was looking for clarification as I had conflicting information relating to some of the items required. Children of 3 should not require medical test, only health insurance unless things have changed recently. To get exact info for your particular case I would call the DNRD hotline AMER on 8005111 They will be able to give you guidence and info according to your case. I always find them very helpful.

The documents and process are as follows according to EW's FAQ page the sponsor will need to bring to the typing office: - The application form available from the typing center at the immigration department. - Three photographs of the child (white background), always have extra photographs handy as a precaution. - The original passports of the sponsor and the child and their photocopies. - Original and valid medical certificate. - Sponsor’s employment contract, attested. - Sponsor’s salary certificate, attested. - Sponsor’s residence visa and copy. - Tenancy contract in the sponsor’s name or if company provided. - Health insurance for the child. - Duly attested birth certificate. Here are the steps to follow; - The child should have his/her blood tests and x-rays completed at an authorized medical facility and should retain the certificate for visa processing. - The sponsor should visit the typing center at the immigration department. Have all the documents ready and fill the application forms in and pay the necessary fees here. - Fees are AED100 per year and like spousal sponsorship, child’s sponsorship is usually valid for three years. The total fee for a three year visa usually amounts to AED370 after extra charges are added. Always double check the requirements for a residency visa with the immigration department before you go there to avoid unnecessary trips to and from the department. Always bring original documents and their copies in both black and white and colour to have with you just in case they are needed. Remember to carry lots of photographs as a precaution if any extras are needed. http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_faqs_residency_visa_procedures_dubai_9656.aspx

Good afternoon all I'm in need of some direction when it comes to the sponsorship of my son. My husband works here also, but we decided for me to sponsor him (as I'm a bit of a control freak!). I have the following documents already: - ejari - dewa bill - salary certificate from my employer - certificate from employer to confirm my address - no objection letter from employer - passport photos for son What else do I need? What is my first move in kick-starting the process?! I'm so confused?! Its legal in most countries where owners are allowed to rent rooms, flats or houses without it being a licensed accommodation. In Dubai they made a law banning private holiday lettings last year. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic223971-private-homeowners-no-longer-permitted-holiday-lets-without-license-forum23.aspx <em>edited by chezmoi on 03/05/2015</em>

Aren't you meant to use your UAE licence anyway if you have one? Yes, correct, the reason I posted the info is quite a few people on a recent thread were talking about the status of their British licences while resident abroad, so this advisory maybe useful for them if they plan to use It for booking hire cars on holiday.

If you are looking for all natural and to avoid chemicals in sunscreen, or any cosmetic there is a great resource at EWG where you can check out the chemical toxicity rating of any product. I recommend checking even if a product claims to be all natural as there is no legislation that prevents manufacturers from claiming cosmetics are natural or even organic when they may contain chemicals along with some plant based ingredients. There is also a guide to the best sunscreens that show which brands have low risk ratings, risk is measured on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the most toxic. http://www.ewg.org/2014sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/ Check a product here http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ <em>edited by chezmoi on 02/05/2015</em>

A 135 cm x 190 cm 4' 6" x 6' 3" is a UK Standard Double Go smaller than that and you could be in trouble Though in Dubai a 160 is meant just for two And while it might nicely fit someone and you In Europe it’s thought of for more than a couple Though their bedroom norms I’d rather not trouble In Dubai 140, 160 and 180 are all over town But 135 in Dubai I never have found Perhaps it is out there in some custom shops It may take the OP to shop till she drops If someone knows where then do tell the OP And put a quick end to her bed quandary This sizing is vexing when sheets will not fit So here is the guide to explain it a bit A 135 cm x 190 cm 4' 6" x 6' 3" is a UK Standard Double A 150cm x 200cm 5' x 6'6" is a UK King size A 160cm x 200cm 5'3 x 6'6" is a European King Size A 180cm x 200cm 6' x 6'6 is a UK Superking Size

If you need a form you can edit yourself rather than a sample you can either pick up a standard form at stationery shops such as Office works, these are not Ejari issued forms but you are allowed to use them, they look like this [url=http://www.farook.com/upload/gallery/images/gal_1330860725_regular.jpg'>link[/url'> But if you are in Dubai you will need to register the contract with Ejari anyway so its probably best to use the Ejari official form which you can download and edit from this link http://www.ejari-registration.ae/download-tenancy-contract-dubai/#.VUCb_CFViko They also have the 'Ejari Express' service where they do the whole process including registration and make the contract, if you use this they will provide the form for free https://www.ejari-registration.ae/register-ejari/ hth

Chezmoi, what you say makes perfect sense and I doubt anyone would disagree. However, deleted posts are not necessarily defamatory. So we can't post honest reviews of advertiser's services, for example. EW used to be a community, but now it is a business. edited by rawla on 28/04/2015 Yes, agree not all comments about businesses are removed for being defamatory, some honest reviews conflict with their business affiliations but my comment is about my objection to personal defamation of the kind we have seen recently all too often.
