If you want to send a gift I would use Skynet, there are no more expensive than the postal service and will give you door to door courier delivery for much less than other courier companies. For eg a half kg to Canada will cost dhs65 with Skynet and get there far quicker than the post which I would not recommend in any case as they have lost so many of my parcels. http://www.skynetworldwide.net/

You could probably order the real thing from Marseilles online. Here the nearest thing I have seen in the shops is a natural olive oil soap made in Syria, its in the Co-op Safa but it does contain fragrance oils. If that's not a problem for you it may be ok. There's also a shop in the Madinat and Wafi that sells handmade soap, I think the bars there are quite expensive and may have fragrances. Dubai Garden Centre has an olive oil soap made in New Zealand but it does contain preservatives. I can't say I have found any in the stores that are I could be sure are completely free of fragrance or additives of some kind. This is a problem for many including me due to my allergies and skin sensitivity, unfortunately many soaps labelled as 'natural' also contain a lot of irritants. If you don't have any luck finding anything I think you would be happy if you tried some of my handmade cold process soap. I only use pure organic olive oil, palm oil and vegetable oils like the Marseilles recipe and you can be 100% certain it has no chemicals and fragrances at all. hth

To check if the smell is just from the cryovac the best thing is to rinse it in white vinegar, then water and pat dry with paper towels, if the odour has gone it should be ok, if it still smells strange after doing that then it may be bad. [i'>If in doubt throw it out.[/i'> hth

And also the slow drivers who insist on driving 20 km below the speed limit getting in the way, blocking exits and generally breaking when there is no need..... It's a speed limit, not a compulsory minimum speed. The road conditions should dictate the safe driving speed, not the speed limit signs, nor the idiot driver who tailgate anyone not conforming to their idea of safe speeds. Totally agree. The tailgating is so potentially dangerous. I had someone right up my behind today on the Al Ain Road. I was doing 120, the speed limit and was blocked in by someone undertaking me and still the to*ser in the car behind me was flashing me to move. There was nowhere to go. What was I supposed to do? Fly away? Aren't they taught about safe stopping distances? Read this in the telegraph:[b'> "In a survey undertaken in 2008 in the emirate [sic'> of Al Ain, 92 per cent of respondents said they believed that the most likely cause of a serious road accident was “destiny” while 17 per cent cited the evil eye as the cause and 15 per cent blamed djinn (supernatural spirits or genies)." [/b'>Oh dear... edited by emmsie on 10/09/2012 That is really just as disturbing to know as the way they drive...

Hi Di: I have 2 EXPEDIT bookshelves for sale, both are in the black-brown colour and are in excellent condition. One shelf is 2x4 the other is 1x4. We are just in the process of getting built-in bookshelves made in our new place, therefore won't need the IKEA shelves any longer :) If you are interested, feel free to drop me a line at gmail dot com Cheers! Thanks so much, its actually irooni who's looking for the shelves. But much appreciated! Hope she sees your post :)

You can get gluten free products from the gluten free supermarket (they have a website and you order online) , they also deliver. They have started baking their own bread etc which is also dairy free:) , I ordered some the other day and it was lovely :) Just looked at the website, really nice range of breads but there seems to be a minimum order of dhs250.00 and a delivery charge. I would have liked the quinoa crispbread but cannot order 250 dhs worth of it! Is that correct, did you pay the same?

I would think the pay here would be on a par with the going international standard rate, for example in Australia we have paid AUD 25 per hour and in the US its pretty much the same http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Occupational_Therapist_(OT)/Hourly_Rate

Those little stalls rent on a monthly basis, so they are not permanent, you could go up to the mall management office (above Home R US) and ask about the company that sold them, maybe they could put you in touch with them. There was a vendor at the Marina Market you could try http://www.marinamarket.ae/index.php?option=com_sobi2&sobi2Task=sobi2Details&sobi2Id=29&Itemid=148 There are some leads on this thread as to other places you will find Moulin Roty toys. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=181315 ETA also some MR toys here http://harvesthomegroup.com/zaazeezou/Default.aspx http://www.bumblebee-me.com/ hth edited by Di@DXB on 08/09/2012

I am going to Ethiopia next week to a school for incredibly disadvantaged kids. One thing that UNICEF has identified is that owning a school bag has a really positive impact on young children. These would be fab for these little ones if you felt that it was something you would like to do. I understand if you were looking for something more local. That would be lovely, how can I get them to you?

We had booked a well known, expensive restaurant in Souk Madinat for a special meal with our eldest son and were shocked to see the amount of children running around inside - this was a 8.30 booking. The outside balcony area was full although we had earlier requested a table there. We didn't even sit down. Management agreed it wasn't ideal but they couldn't do anything about it. We left quickly and have never returned. [b'>However even if I found a child annoying in a daytime cafe environment I would put up with it. They were wrong to make such an issue[/b'>. Agree, it does not seem that OP's LO was doing anything more than climbing in and out of her buggy and chattering, and it was a daytime coffee shop. Quite unreasonable of the the couple to complain if she was'nt knocking into them at all or shouting. They should have been in Ikea the day I was having B'fast there and a woman with at least six kids under 10 allowed them to run amock with inflatable beach balls in the restaurant seating area. Of course eventually a ball hit me on the head and landed right in our food while the mother did nothing to control them at all. We said nothing to her even though our food had been spolied and the noise was very disturbing. I think that couple just had zero tolerance for kids period. Why say nothing? Well honestly I figured that if the mother had any sense in the first place she would have not let the kids run amock like that and trying to explain the concept of manners to her would probably only be a complete waste of time and possibly end in an altercation which I did not want to have happen on that occasion when I had my special needs GD with me.

How did she send it and where did she address it to? It it was by US mail and addressed to your PO box then you should get a slip in the box to notify you to collect it from customs. I have had parcel come over from the US that way, and 3 weeks would be about the maximum time I would expect it to take if its priority mail that is. edited by Di@DXB on 05/09/2012

I sat in a restaurant once before in MOE and a local kid kept running up to our table, and hit me with a giant plastic hammer. It was quite sore! He hammered away at my legs, knees and also bopped me on the side of my head too. The toddlers parents glanced over at this once or twice but didnt say a word to their child. Really I just don't get these parents who see their kids doing that sort of thing and they do nothing! That makes me more mad than whatever the kids did.

I bought some in Debanhams a couple of years ago for my DD after she gave birth, and seen a similar kind of thing but not actual brand name Spanx in other stores, I think Woolworths lingerie dept or BHS have something similar. She found it too uncomfortable but that could have been just due to having the baby. Have not tried it myself, but imagine that if you squeeze yourself in aroud the middle its going to have to bulge out somewhere else. Maybe I'm wrong there!

The cheapest courier service you will find is Skynet, they will pick up the package and deliver to the address in the UK for you, usually takes about 3 to 5 days depending on intervening weekends. A 2 kg parcel will cost AED175.00 from Dubai to UK. Just make sure you wrap the items well in bubble wrap and in a sturdy box and it should be fine. I use them all the time and never had problems. http://www.skynetworldwide.net/ ETA (Bubble wrap and box can be found in Daiso) edited by Di@DXB on 05/09/2012

Hi, they have unblocked it and now they have gone I realised that now all the water in the taps are turning brown even though I've tried running it off. Has anyone been told not to put toilet paper down the loo, as I think that is a lie. G. Everywhere I have lived in Dubai its been like that, been told not to put paper down the loo including where I live now. I was told the plumbing and sewerage systems here cannot cope with paper, you see the bins everywhere too in hotels and malls so I think its pretty standard not to.

The Manstad looks like this and the dimensions are detailed here http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90198978/#/80198974 I've had a couple of Ikea sofa beds over the years, I don't recommend them in terms of stylish looks, I guess some people are against them because they tend to be rather square and chunky looking as well as very heavy to move around, I got rid of mine for those reasons, but if that's not an issue they are quite functional as chairs and beds. As I said before I saw a beautiful and stylish one in a shop on the SZR some time ago, you certainly can find better looking ones than Ikea around.

Does anyone use a water filter on kitchen tap so they can use water for cooking, coffee etc? I would still use bottles for drinking but would like option of using tap for cooking, kettle etc. Where does one buy such filters and would the shop come and fit or do I need to find a handy man or do some DIY myself? Any advice gratefully received. I use filtered tap water for cooking and tea/coffee. You could either get a jug filter like a Brita one, they are sold in Spinneys or a standing one with a bottle apparatus and outlet nozzle that you have to stand next to the sink, these are sold in C4 and most big supermarkets. For the bathroom there's a neat tap filter that does not need professional fitting, it fits on the top of the tap mixer This one just attaches on the part of the tap where the shower hose goes in. It’s sold in The Change Initiative on the SZR and costs dhs 100. ETA http://www.thechangeinitiative.com/ hth edited by Di@DXB on 03/09/2012
