Whatever company you use my advice would be to only use them if they have their own office in the country of destination rather than a thrid party agent for delivery at the other side. This advice comes as a result of a very bad first hand experience with a local agent overseas claiming they were not paid in full for the complete service by the Dubai company who claimed in turn they had paid their agent. We were left in the middle having paid door to door and were then asked for more money for local clearance, port charges storage and delivery.

Dangerous B, slow cookers are you friend. You can chuck everything in in the morning, and when you get home in the evening it's all cooked and ready to serve. It's the way forward! AND I think it only uses the energy of a lightbulb ;) Agree- slow cookers are definitely your friend, I had a pressure cooker blow up on me years ago when the safety weight flew off and embedded in the ceiling allowing a volcano of hot stew to escape and shoot upwards and down all over me and my kitchen!

I can't believe that it ever was legal! It was formerly and there were 'squatter's right' under law that protected them from eviction even though they were actually trespassing. Actually that isn't true. Previous to this (long overdue) change it was treated as a civil rather than a criminal matter so it was up to the owner (who in some cases can't be contacted) to take legal action through the Civil Courts to recover the property which is a lengthy and potentially costly process during which the property could be very badly damaged. It is now being treated as a criminal matter, which means the police can take immediate action once it's reported. According to the housing minster there used to be such as thing as "squatter's rights" [b'>Housing minister Grant Shapps added: “No longer will there be so-called ‘squatters rights’.[/b'> [url=http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0831/breaking33.html'>link[/url'>

Can I ask a dumb question - what is the difference between a pressure cooker and a slow cooker? A pressure cooker cooks fast by sealing the pan under a high heat and pressure vacumn and a slow cooker cooks by minimal heat over a long time.

The Novotel next to Deira City Centre would be affordable and convenient, if you book on line you get a discount price and not pay more than $130 per night. She could walk through to the shopping centre too if she wanted without need for a taxi as its connected to the hotel. http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-6482-novotel-deira-city-centre/index.shtml

I saw one by chance about a year ago in the furniture shop next to the Nissan showroom on the SZR, it was Italian made, really stylish and beuatifully made. Not sure they still have them in but worth a look. I was not looking for a sofa bed but if I had been I would have bought it in a heartbeat. Sorry cannot recall the name of the shop but its right next to the car showroom in the building acroos the side street.

So from the sum of most posts here I'd say it’s pretty conclusive that people who are trying door handles [i'>are[/i'> up to no good, some knock beforehand and others don't but clearly these incidents are quite frequent and have not been otherwise explained. I have often wished I had a cam that would record movement outside my door, its happened so many times to be more than accidental mistakes.

How do you know it wasnt someone in trouble? I would not expect someone in trouble to try to break in to my house through the window! Sorry, I meant the OP - and she only referenced knocking and trying the handle. Well, as I said I really don't think someone in trouble would try a door handle either. I have had a neighbour in trouble in the middle of the night, she was screaming help as she knocked on my door. I think the people trying the door handles are up to no good.

This has actually happened to me several times and I live in an apartment and I have heard of it happening to others. It's usually like this - someone rings the bell and then if you don't open they immediately go for the door handle. Though in my case it's only lasted a few minutes and the person would leave. I have heard that some people go from house to house begging. I've had exactly the same happen so many times, always very late at night, the thing I don't get is if its a mistaken front door and they think its their house why are they ringing and trying the handle instead of trying to put their key in the door. I don't think such incidents are mistakes. I have had one intruder at night who somehow managed to open a bedroom window, thankfully he was appearently scared off as he was about to jump into the room. His footprints were on both the inside and outside of the window area wall. Its very scary and I'd make sure all your locks and especially your window catches are secure. Are u in the ranches too??if not then where? No I was not in the Ranches when this happened. It was in the Springs.

I went through the same disappointment with my web designer, he was not creative and came up with useless designs. I had paid him up front so in the end I realsised he could not offer what I needed it was a total write off. If I was going to do another website I'd use Design Crowd, you post your project online and will get lots of submissions before you pay any money, its completely risk free, if you're not happy with the work you don't pay. http://www.designcrowd.com/alt/1/

Bars made of Raw organic cacao are not quite as smooth as the fat and sugar rich bars we all love, but is actually full of nutrients that are good for you and does not contain artery clogging fats or sugar. So its a good alternative for when you don't want to feel bad about eating chocolate.Where do you buy these in Dubai? I'm interested. I usually get them in Geant supermarket and at the nutrition store in Ibn Battuta Mall, the brand is Loving Earth, I have seen it in lots of other supermarkets and health food stores too. There are a variety of flavours and they do a raw organic drinking chocolate too which is sweetened with coconut nectar instead of sugar. Its gorgeous. You will find this in Geant as well but the bigger range of the chocs and other products is in the health food store there which is near the exit to the covered car park just after Starbucks. http://www.lovingearth.net/product-groups/1/raw-chocolate-bars edited by Di@DXB on 31/08/2012

Thanks Di and Expat, You're right - I def should have done some more checking around before placing the order. Paypal sent me a notice this morning saying seller has refunded my money - with a note "Dear Customer, we are not delivering at this time". In light of this - does anyone have a recommendation for an online order/delivery & payment option offered by a delicious and reliable local company? <thinking box of cupcake type gift but open to suggestions>. Thank you! Good you got a refund, it's wrong of them to leave the shopping cart operational and take money if they are not able to deliver.

So a six month lease in each name would be needed if such a thing were possible, six months in his name, six months in sponsor name for one to renew visa earlier than needed. Or one of them ren visa now before them move and that solves these problems for a couple of years. Six months leases are going to prove a bit tricky I think esp with the DEWA factor, but as you say if one renews now then they are good for two years at least, so that's an option.

Can you have 2 contracts for the same place? No, that would not be possible as only one tenant can be reside at a time by law.

Was worth a thought, not sure what they will do then other than getting wed. Thanks If they don't want to get wed then only way round is for one to have the contract is his name for the visa and the other to have the contract of their sponsor for the visa.

I would use an organic shampoo that's free of chemical nasties, Just because something is organic doesn't mean it can't have "nasties" in it..... some of the worlds greatest poisons are "organic" True lots of natural poisons are of course organic, but they are not in the shampoo I recommended!

I did think it would raise questions, but offered to ask here as I know EW have good advice and hence asking here before anything is signed. Both work for different companies and have previously had leases in their own names now want to live together, maybe get married one day. If one used their sponsor/ company and the other had DEWA would that be a way round it? The start of the article seems to say that, but thinking that probably won't work. Random thought, If they were to get a six month lease in each others names, with one renewing visa early would that be a way round it. Trying to help a mate before I leave town. They would not be able to have the contract in one name and the DEWA in another as DEWA need the contract to open the account.

I would use an organic shampoo that's free of chemical nasties, no need to spend a fortune on designer baby shampoos which in any case are not mostly 100% organic. Try Organic Care baby range available i n Lu Lu hypermarket, its Australian made and free of SLS, SLES, EDTA etc. and no more expensive than the one you are using.

On behalfnof a friend. What happens if you and your OH are not married? Is it ok to have both names on the tenancy contract? Given the new rules they both need to be on the tenancy agreement as visas are due, bu coincidence, for renewal same month and same year, so they can't do one year each on the lease. Thanks Don't have both your names put on - it flags many questions up. You don't need an tenancy contract to get a UAE visa, only to sponsor a dependant. You do now since July they changed the rules and I was asked for mine when I renewed last month and I don't sponsor anyone. http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/it-s-official-tenancy-contract-must-for-visa-renewal-across-uae-2012-06-12-1.462747 edited by Di@DXB on 29/08/2012

If you don;t have a tenancy contract in your name I think they will accept the tenancy contract of your sponsor for your visa renewal, so that may be a way around it for you. I think you could possibly run into some trouble having your name on a rental contract if you are not married.

I bought a can of spray paint recently thinking I'd touch up a few things around the house, but the fumes and smell were really awful, I could not use it. Avoid the make 'Fashine1' Thermoplastic Acrylic paint unless you are going to use it outdoors only as the fumes are really knock out.

Most of the things mentioned and The coal for our fireplaces being delivered in sacks and dropped down a chute to the cellar, Mum always used to ask us to watch from the windows and count the sacks to be sure they gave us the right number. And the chimney sweep coming to clean out the flues, I remember watching him attach a huge brush to dozens of flexible bamboo poles until it popped out of the top of the chimney stack. The pantry in our house had a ‘dumb waiter’, we loved sending things up and down in it, and every room upstairs had pull cords that rang bells in the kitchen, they was a bell mounted on a board with the name of the room that was ringing it, we used to drive our mother crazy with them.

Thanks, I would appreciate your advice. I've been quoted from dhs13,500 to 17,000 for 13cm from dxb to Freo groupage and the transit timings are really slow, like from 3 to 5 months. I am now trying to find out quotes for LCL shipping so would be grateful if you can advise a company that would give me a good price on that. Di, what's more important: the cost or the transit time? If it's the transit time, then LCL isn't the way to go. The thing is, they're loading your stuff onto a container with several other shipments. Yours may be the only shipment of personal effects. Also, depending on which shipping line they use, that container could be making more than one stop along the way - sometimes, a lot more. So your 3-5 months - that's just an average. If the transit time isn't such a big deal, and you just want to be as cost effective as possible -- the quote that they gave you, is that door-to-door? I'll ask my friend which FF he uses overseas and see what he says. The quote of 13,500 was for door to door on a shared container basis taking 3 to 5 months, I would like door to door as my first preference but don't think I will get cheaper than that, anyway whatever way it goes I don't want it taking that long. So if you can find anything for me that may be a bit quicker and cheaper too that would be great either LCL or groupage. Thanks so much for helping. edited by Di@DXB on 28/08/2012

Di@Dxb, I wonder if it was a cleaner or someone answering at the call centre? You mentioned it was past 3pm, so maybe the actual call centre people had left already....just wondering why else someone would keep repeating the opening hours like an automated robot :) Honestly though I do think some people just shouldn't be working in anything even close to customer service; to put it bluntly a lot of people just seem too thick to actually be able to handle a job in which people ask you unscripted questions! Our local Subway guy can't even make a sandwich according to the order, it's so frustrating I just think how flipping hard is it to make a sandwich!!! List of items, bang them together, done. Does make me less lazy though and I make my own food now :) You could be right, if so perhaps there's hope I may eventually get an intelligent conversation with someone, somewhere, someday. I live in hope :)

I am being really cheeky and butting in on your Perth thread - I wonder if anyone can help advise me - my daughter (aged 20) is about to head over there for a year. She is dong a years work placement at ECU in joondalup. There are 4 of them from her Uni in the Uk going and they are trying to find a house to rent. Some of the other girls are already there and looking around but they haven't found anything suitable yet and they are now wondering if it would be better to live in Perth and commute (by train as they don't drive) to ECU or whether to live in Joondalup and then travel to Perth for entertainment etc. Thanks for any advice for a bunch of youngsters!?? Look on Gumtree.com.au there's lots of student type accomodation in Joondalup and around that would suit your daughter. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-real-estate/joondalup-perth/rent+house+bed/k0c9296l3008414r5?sort=closest hth ETA I spend time near Joondalup every year, its not a backwater at all. There is a good train into the city takes about 20 mins into Perth central. The uni is very vibrant and there are lots of students living in flats and house shares around the town. Another plus is Joondalup will be cheaper in rent than Perth. edited by Di@DXB on 28/08/2012

Here’s yet another mind bogglingly stupid conversation I just had with the call centre of my bank. Me: Hello I want to verify that a block on my credit card has now been lifted. I have been told by the car hire company it has been cancelled. Him: I don’t see any block on your card . Me: But I notice that my available balance and my actual balance differed by the exact amount of the previous block that was put on the car hire company. That makes me think it was not lifted. Him: That difference would be because there’s a block on your card. Me: But you said you cannot see a block on my card! Him: That would be because it’s been lifted. Me: So what you’re telling me is that there is a block on my card although it has been lifted but it’s still there? Him: Yes, anything else I can help you with? Me: Yes, can you tell me why I even called you?
