It was a minor fire in one of the food outlets, all over now I think from the latest reports. The were some exagerated tweets at the time, which I think very irresponsible as that could have caused a mass stampede and lot more danger than the actual incident.

.....again today my Dh and I were overtaken by a speed-demon on SZR who had his two small children standing on the passenger seat. No sign of mum anywhere.... but not sure if that was a factor. I wagged my finger and shook my head very dramatically, quite willing to risk deportation to get the message across. Good for you, I once tried to advise a father that letting his little boy stick his head out of the sunroof could result in the child being decapitated when he braked. It only got me an abusive response but like you I could not see it and do nothing.

Hi all. So, we went to see The Dark Knight rises late last night and I was so disappointed to see small children in the cinema. It is a very scary, and particularly adult movie with lots of murder and violence. It is rated PG 15. The tiny tot sitting near to me was whimpering and asking lots of questions, and seemed equally enthralled and terrified. He was probably around 4 years old. I know that its finally up to parents to decide what their children see but I wonder if they are aware of the impact this will have on such innocent and vulnerable little minds (and emotions)? I was dying to go up and ask the parents what their reasoning was so I could get a glimmer of understanding. I'm continually horrified at the risks parents expose their children to here, from watching totally unsuitable movies as you so rightly point out, to leaving them alone in vehicles, at home, and on balconies. etc etc. ETA not forgetting without seatbelts too <em>edited by Di@DXB on 20/08/2012</em>

Not sure if this will help your question-its the Federal Labour Law for the UAE, there's mention in it of what aspects apply to the Free Zones Other than sponsorship of FZ employees being from the FZA rather than the employers much of it is the same. You don't need to go to the TC roundabout at all, just carry on straight from Wafi direction until the junction with Sana Fashion on the right hand corner, take a right there and get over to the left immediately and the first U turn back, and carry on straight keeping to the right hand side and the Police Station is on the right just after Immigration. Coming back out you will be forced in the TC direction but if you take first right into Diyafa street and then the first U turn back, keep to the left side and you will take the flyover back in the Wafi direction without taking the roundabout. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 17/08/2012</em>

You wouldnt be shipping to BNE around dec or jan would you? Unfortunately no, the timing is about right but mine would be going to Freo. For me its really going to depend on the cost of a small load as to whether I do take anything or just start from scratch there. But you could look into the option that amkcbrandon mentioned about LCL shipments. I think I will make some enquires on that too. ETA Thanks amkcbrandon for the tip :) <em>edited by Di@DXB on 15/08/2012</em>

BTW Di, did you make any progress with your small container question? We are also moving and don't have a full container load as such.. wondering if there is a cheaper option... No, so far I have been told there is no such thing as a smaller than 20 foot container. But was advised the option is available to share a container with anyone else who is shipping to the same destination. Don't have any prices as yet.

Hilarious. Di, she sounds positively passive aggressive with an A in "customer care - the fastest way to get someone off a line when it is 3pm." Our land line apparently IS a call centre. Every day we get calls for Nokia. Last night 11pm Me: "Hello?" (worried) "Nokia Care?" (pronounced Nokeeyakeeya?) Me: " No, this is a private number" "Not Nokiakeeya?" Me: "No, this is a private number." "My reference number 795234" Me: "Sorry wrong number." 5 seconds later, phone rings again "Hello Nokeeyajeeya?" Me: "No, I already told you, wrong number. Please don't phone again, it is very late." "Ok" 30 seconds later, phone rings again by which time I am in a rage "Hello Nokeeyakeeya my number 795.." Me: "NO I ALREADY TOLD YOU NOT NOKIA, PRIVATE LINE! Please stop phoning!" 1 minute later, when I am just about back in bed, phone rings... Poor man puts phone down when he hears my roar. Seriously, [b'>who phones a call centre for a phone repair at 11pm???[/b'>edited by Aryanwynn on 14/08/2012 Only in Dubai I would guess, and another thing is why do they go on dialing the same number again and again when they've been told wrong number. How do they think dialing the same number going to make it any different. Beyond me.

I know Valerian is also contraindicated before surgery, you need to stop taking it at least 2 weeks beforehand as it may interact with the anesthesia. Pretty sure the same goes for any sedative, but check with your doctor.

Some years ago I remember reading an EW's post about trying to spell her name to someone over the phone. Her name had 2 'n's in it. Lets say it was Annie for example. She said that the person on the phone tried to spell it back to her by using international code words and started well with "Alpha, :" and then said "Nipple, Nipple..." I still get a lot of laughs out of that one. LOL -Hilarious, I had a workmate whose surname began with Z, she was booking an airline ticket on speakerphone and the agent said "Ok, you are confirmed Mrs Zebra." You can guess what the whole office called her after that.

The flea market may not be the best place for your sandals, agree, but all of the other events are, esp Arte and JBR and Marina Walk markets. For the Trade Licence you can work out what it would cost and entail with this Economic Department wizard http://www.dubaided.gov.ae/English/eServices/default.aspx Start by inputting your business activity type here and follow the prompts for more details such as local partner, LLC, estimated cost of rental premises etc, and it will give you a sample cost report at the end. hth

Welcome to Dubai. You can sell any handmade items at the ARTE events, the Dubai Flea Markets or the seasonal school and college Fairs, Arte has regular timings from September onwards for artisans to display and sell their crafts twice monthly at Festival City and Times Square. www.arte.ae You can't sell your products in the shops unless you have a trade license and a workshop. Home made goods can only be legally sold under licence of one of these types of events. hth ETA There's also an outdoor market in JBR and one in the Marina too where you can rent a stall for your prducts. And Dubai Garden Centre have weekly markets on Saturdays too. http://www.coventgardenmarket.ae/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=187&Itemid=175 http://www.marinamarket.ae/ <em>edited by Di@DXB on 14/08/2012</em>

If they use a telescope to view the new moon it should be visible on Friday evening as the new moon appears at 15.54 UT (GMT) on Friday 17th according to astronomical calculations. [url=http://aa.usno.navy.mil/cgi-bin/aa_moonphases.pl?year=2012&ZZZ=END'>link[/url'> It may not be visible to the naked eye in this region though until Saturday, but it seems a telescope was used at the start of Ramadan and the new moon was observed then on the first day of its birth. http://www.arabianbusiness.com/photos/saudis-use-telescope-spot-ramadan-new-moon-466748.html?img=0 But as CP said, we will have to wait and see.

My knowledge is not that recent but we used to have to order the needles from the UK because the NovoFine ones were not available here then, we used to Novopen Junior and then the Novopen 3 and never found the fine gauge needles here at all. It may be different now and I would be happy to go see what is available in the shops currently if you like.

Has anyone tried comany named "Supreme way" for moving furniture? We are moving from our villa in Arabian Ranches to an apartment in Marina. I've read positive notes about this company here and there. How do you evaluate their services? Not sure if they are registered but they do have a website. http://www.supremewaypacking.com/get.html

thanks ladies you know everything ;-) If you marry here is it legal in the UK or do you have register it first to be legal? This is what the UK consulate here says [i'>It is not possible to register your marriage in the United Arab Emirates with the Embassy, however we can arrange for your local marriage certificate to be deposited with the General Register Office in the United Kingdom. This is not a legal obligation and has no bearing on the validity or otherwise of the marriage. It simply means that you are able to obtain a certified copy of your marriage certificate directly from the GRO, should you need to do so in the future. There is a charge for this service[/i'>. and the UAE in the UK website says this Q:Is my marriage certificate going to be valid in the UK or EU if I get married in the UAE? A: Yes, if it is properly legalized. Check with the local British Embassy or Consulate. http://www.uae-embassy.ae/Embassies/uk/faq's/585 So best check with the Consulate about legalisation.

Well I guess its a rough estimate of just the Trade Licence costs, and there will be other formailites and fees no doubt. I have not done a commercial license application myself so cannot say for sure what the final cost might be. You will have to rent an office and for F&B there are health and safety requirements too which I have heard are quite extensive. ETA - Good Luck! <em>edited by Di@DXB on 12/08/2012</em>

More likely that Ramadan will be 30 days because Shaban was 29 days....usually two consecutive months do not have the same number of days in Islamic calendar. So private sector resumes work on the 3rd of Shawal, Tuesday, and public on 4th day of Shawal, Wednesday. As usual, the newspaper is as clear as mud. Yes, really wonder why they could not explain it better, we have to look at conversion calendars and work out what day the 1st of Shawal might fall on when they could have done that for us by saying either Saturday or Sunday, anyway I thought it could go either way 29 or 30 days, like 50/50 chance? Looking back at the calendar on earlier months I see [i'>'Muharram & Safar' [/i'>were two consecutive 29 days months this ([i'>Islamic[/i'>) year. Or can this not happen twice within a year perhaps? From my limited understanding of the Islamic calendar, usually two months do not have the same number of days although there are exceptions - it is just less common...most online sources state the 1st of Shawwal as being Sunday the 19th...therefore the last day of fasting is on Saturday. The newspapers would have been better off printing nothing so as not to confuse people unless they can give concrete dates. They do this for every public holiday, it's so unnecessary. Sorry I was mistaken about the consecutive months being 'Muharram & Safar' they were not both 29 days, but it can happen as you say but most likely not.

So this means public sector has been declared as definitely from Friday 17th evening, but private sector holiday begins from 1st day of the new month at the end of Ramadan, so its going to depend if Ramadan ends Friday at 29 days long or ends Saturday at 30 days, making the private sector holiday as possibly starting Saturday or Sunday. We will not know for sure until they announce the end of Ramadan I guess. If I have understood it correctly.
