Hi I also have big problems with sleeping, if you can't find melatonin maybe try 5 HTP I take this and I bought it in a health shop here, you take one or two capsules before you go to bed to help you sleep. 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin. Each capsule contains 50mg of 5-HTP from Griffonia Seed Extract. Does 5 HTP give vivid nightmares as a possible side effect, since serotonin is turned into Melatonin and I find that Melatonin gives me nightmares perhaps it has the same risk?. Have you experienced this with 5 HTP was wondering if this would be a better alternative.

I had forgotten how crazy it is around that time of day, just drove home about an hour ago and had to dodge so many cars that appeared to have drivers falling asleep at the wheel, just drifting all over the lanes. And one lady behind me nearly drove into the back of me at the lights, clearly she did not see cars braking ahead of her, I heard a screech and looked in my rear view mirror to see her swerve off to avoid hitting me. Heaven help us all to get home safely. Police say there have been some 3600 traffic accidents, and two fatalities, in the 10 days since the beginning of Ramadan on July 20. http://themedialine.org/news/news_detail.asp?NewsID=35684 edited by Di@DXB on 30/07/2012

Oh thanks very much for this information. I had no idea skynet was so cheap - and this is the same for international parcels as well? Last time I looked a courier was about three times as much as the empost international priority service. Yes, Skynet is the same rate as EMS even international, and door to door like the more expensive couiers and just as reliable.

Does anyone know what time the post office is open until during ramadan? Especially the branches at Jumeirah, Karama and Al Barsha? Also does anyone know if you can send parcels from Al Barsha (near Lulu) or is it just PO Boxes? Many thanks! You can send parcels from the Post Office near Lulu, however after losing so many parcels with the postal service and finding that I can send it by Skynet courier without treking out to the post office for the same price I would not recommend the post. Not sure about Ramadan opening hours, I think they will open an hour later than normal and close a couple of hours earlier. One thing I just discovered trying to close an account is that they refused to let me even apply to close the account as long as there is an active credit card attached to it even if the card has zero outstanding and in my case had not been used for over 6 months. They told me I have to apply to cancel the credit card first, then wait 45 days in case of anything coming in on the card, and then I could come back and close the account. I have asked around and been told this is standard in most banks.

DED inspectors report reveals many supermarkets quietly hiked their prices in the weeks prior to Ramadan. Cooking oil, fruit and veg in some places had risen by 50%, fish, and veal by 12% and fresh chicken, lamb and flour by 77%. http://www.dubaichronicle.com/2012/07/22/hypermarkets-dubai-prices-of-food-ramadan/

Found our way to Kgrille for a coffee after a busy morning running around. Wont be back. 27 dhs for a small (and I mean small) coffee but did give us a free bikkie. They had a small selection of muffins n croissants avail. People smoking in there too in a small area. Dusting off our coffee machine for the rest of month. Madinat costa and starbucks are also take away only, even though all curtained and screened off. Thanks for the heads up, won't be going to KGrill then, that leaves Maxims which is also very expensive and I don't like it either. So nothing really in MOE of any use then.

I read on another thread costa didn't get a liscence so it would be take away only. It would be easier for malls just to open up the fast food places as they are all in one and need one curtain to cover the lot. You would have thought mc Donald's and the other huge chains would get licences. Yes, exactly! Especially at MOE, they could just curtain ff the whole food court at the ski end so easily and it would all be completely out of sight.

Hello ladies, I'm meeting a friend in MOE tomorrow, does anyone know of anywhere that is open there for food or drinks during the daytime? Thanks. Costa is takeaway only, to eat in there's KGrill 2nd floor of Kempinski hotel at ski end and Maxim's 1st level ski end, only this year at MOE. http://www.kempinski.com/en/dubai/mall-of-the-emirates/dining/restaurants/kgrill/

So many of the places are pricier and more formal restaurants in hotels. Anyone know which of the Costa/ Starbucks type places are open (other than Counter Culture of course) Last year the Starbucks in Health Care city was open and Costa on the Palm but not sure of this year? I've asked at a few Costa Coffee outlets and been told that they did not get licence to open for dine in during daytime hours this year except at the airport, so I guess the same goes for Starbucks too. Some are open for takeaway only. edited by Di@DXB on 22/07/2012

Been searching for days for a medium size cotton lined washing up glove, cannot use the synthetic lined ones. There's dozens in Large and Extra Large, makes me wonder who do the shop buyers think use these things, the average ladies hand is not gorrilla sized. If anyone sees a medium cotton lined pair please let me know. Sorry for the boring question but my "cold" tap water is currently running out at 130 degrees Farenheit, too hot to put my hands under. Just been looking at the section on traffic fines (very helpful thanks EW) and was interested to find the following, amongst many other things, are subject to fines: Making a sudden swerve Not indicating Not giving way for vehicles to pass on the left Overtaking from the right Abuse of parking space Opening left door of a taxi Taxi refusing to carry passengers What a shame the message doesn't seem to get through! We see most of these on a daily basis and in my experience the culprits are people who have had to take a test here. What still horrifies me is the disregard and lack of awareness for safety. And add to that crossing the chrevron road markings too when changing lanes, no one ever takes any notice that is illegal too.

Thank you for your help! Did you take paperwork to all places or just DNRD? And last Q -I hope -How much does it cost these days? Again, thank you! The only paperwork you need for the ID card application is your passport. Then you go to medical with the slip from the ID regsitration and passport. Then you need the tenancy contract, passport, and other usual docs depending on what kind of visa you need, for DRND The medical cost about dhs800 as I went for the fast VIP service, not sure how much the regular medical costs as I have never used it. The residency renewal I will have to dig out my papers as I cannot recall. Its roughly dhs100 per year of the visa plus other fees and charges. edited by Di@DXB on 21/07/2012

Thanks for that - we have the original contract still, so we might have to use that. So is it ID card, then Medical tests, then DNRD? Am a bit lost about the order to do things Yes, you will need to renew or apply for the ID card first, then the tests then start the Visa process. edited by Di@DXB on 21/07/2012

Hi ladies, DH and I have been scouring the DNRD website for advice, but it seems we have found every service but the one we need. Can anybody talk us through the procedure of visa renewal, as it seems there have been changes - something about DEWA and tenancies? Any help would be gladly received! M76 Just did mine, had to produce certified copy of Tenancy Contract, I could not get a certified copy so ended up giving them the original as there was no alternative, they may accept an original DEWA bill alternatively, really depends on where you go it seems.

It could get complicated, I heard of someone doing this and they were told they had to go to Abu Dhabi and come back twice in one day. In the end they used a car registration service, they took care of all the paperwork and everything. Probably best to do likewise esp now it could be a slow process.

Thanks! Pity none of the places are in any of the malls though, just hotels and other locations, a coffee shop open in any mall that I think is most needed for most of us while we shop, especially mums with little ones who need a drink. Still better than nothing.

If I'm not wrong. in MOE there is a closed food area protected by large panels, nobody can see in... Last year Costa coffee was serving from behind panels but Takeaway only, I was dying of thirst and bought a bottle of water and asked if I could drink it there, they said no even though it was completely hidden. Had to go to the ladies toilet cubicle to drink it, there was nowhere else then where you could actually drink at all other than Aspen and Sezzam restaurants which will not be open this year. Going to be even harder this year to find a café in the malls it seems.

okay, I did phoned the DNRD call centre, and asked what is this new rule, the agent/employee told me it's only news paper article, and he almost wanted to finish the phone call..... but again, go to the real people comments in the gulf news, and so many people been told exactly what is in the news..... I am so confused, why oh why this new rule had happen to come out? Obviously that DNRD employee either did not know what is happening in reality or did not want to bother with your call. Clearly, as you say from reading the comments of real feedback what the article states is actually happening now. I am surprised about this rule, it’s going to impact mothers of young children in particular really badly. We can only hope that they will bring in some concessions to avoid mothers and babies getting separated for the time she must wait outside the country awaiting new sponsorship, which could be quite a wait. This really is going to be so difficult for many women. And sad for their children. As you say not something you would have expected in the circumstances.

There's a tailoring service in Ibn Battuta mall, very reasonable and usually quite quick. Its down the corridor (marked restrooms) that leads off the area in front of New Look, at the end of the corridor turn left through the doors and its straight ahead. Not a proper shop in the mall just a back room in the service corridor. edited by Di@DXB on 14/07/2012

Last year posters came in and progressively posted about open cafes etc. I had just arrived in Dubai then and my recollection is that for MoE, Costa served coffee behind a screen; and McDonald's in the food court near the playcentre served food but only for takeaway... you could not sit down and eat or drink in either venue. The only place open in MoE where you could sit to eat was the cafe in the Kempinski which was curtained off from the general public. So options in MoE were pretty scarce. The cafe Aspin and restaurant Sezzam in MOE are under recontruction so neither of them will be open during Ramadan, the only place this year to eat in at MOE will be KGrill upstairs in the Kempinski hotel.
