Aside from whether the sales are genuine or not a recent survey reports that shoppers in the UAE generally pay as much as 25 per cent more for major fashion brands sold here as compared to the rest of the world. So even if a sale is genuine its likely that you will still be paying more or the same for that item as its price overseas. No big deal just curious as to whether its correct English to say a person is barging when taking a barge in the same context as you would say a person is cruising on a cruiser, boating on a boat or biking on a bike for example. After all we don't say we are planing when we take a plane or training when we take a train. Simple query that's all and wondered if we had any linguists among us. To all who found this boring-apologies and please carry on computering :D

Just interested to know the correct form of usage of the verb to when applied to a person being transported in a barge! ...would say it's to "travel by barge", we don't say "shipping" when travelling on a cruise ship do we? Exactly, you get the point- that's what I would have thought too, whereas if you say a person barges down the river the act of barging is then inteferred as having been done by the person rather the boat, which is in this case incorrect. Thank you!

Correct the verb has two meanings My query was does it seem appropritate to use the verb in this context? Thought anyone may know the traditonal way of describing a person taking a barge down a river, do you say they are barging?

Can't believe you have taken the time to complain about that! You need to get out more! I just wish I was in the UK enjoying the festivities as they are intended. It simply struck me as wrong as I was reviewing all the wonderful pics of yesterday's event. And I am asking a question not complaining, I get out plenty thank you.

I asked about this a while ago and was told to go to the DDE in Almas Tower at JLT where the Dubai Diamond Exchange can certify your stone. There's an 800 number you can call and ask about the process Call Centre: 800 3622 Or: +971(0)4 4249600 Certification International Diamond Laboratories, a subsidiary of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre Authority (DMCC), provides the diamond trade and jewellery retailers with quality reports of polished diamonds. I am getting really fed up with the maintance company we use, always telling me they will call me back, they never do ! So today I asked the guy to give me the contact details of the boss because I would like to speak to him, he flatly refused! I don't know why I am surprized but I am! that is really unprofessional isnt it? Yes it is, but unfortunately normal for here. I just had the phone slammed in my face by a well known servce centre, all I did was ask why no one had called to advise collection timing as promised for my faulty machine!

Ibn Battuta will do ordinary keys but if your key if that type with a ridge and indentations they cannot do those nor any of the mall key cutting places either, you need a locksmith shop for those. ETD just wanted to save you a wasted trip in case :) edited by Di@DXB on 03/06/2012

I have met lots of nice ladies from Pakistan at various EW coffee mornings, so if you go along good chance you will meet one or two, of course its a big mix of nationalities at coffee mornings, but that is what makes it interesting. I would think that if you want an exclusively Pakistani ladies coffee morning then contact the Pakistan Association in Dubai, they have a ladies branch. http://www.pakistanembassyuae.org/view/associations.aspx

Do you use borax, and if so is it easy to get here? Can you post your 'recipe' please? :) I'm sure I saw somebody mention borax on another thread about getting rid of cockroaches. I think they said you can buy borax at Ace. Thanks, I have not looked there, but since borax has possible skin adverse effects I rather keep my formula free of it.

Here's my recipe for the diswasher powder 2 cups bicarbonate of soda 1/2 cup sea salt fine powdered 1/2 cup citric acid mix all together and keep in airtight jar, if it tends to clump put a muslin bag containing a few grains of rice into the container. For the rinse aid just use white vinegar. edited by Di@DXB on 03/06/2012 Thanks for that. Is citric acid available in C4 or spinneys? Do you have a recipe for laundry powder too, please? Yes you should find the citric acid everywhere, sometimes marked as lemon salt.

Here's my recipe for the washing machine powder 1 bar organic castile soap grated as fine as you can make it (I make this myself) 1 cup sodium carbonate 1/2 cup sodium bicarbonate mix all well together, store in airtight container, you need only about a tablespoon for the average wash, or two if very soiled and I find I don't need fabric softener at all when I use this recipe providing it has been made with a castile bar soap as the base.

Can you post your 'recipe' please? :) Borax I have not found here at all, so although its quite easy to make the washing powder and dishwasher powder if you can find borax I have had to develop my own organic alternatives. The liquid soaps for personal use are not so easy to make as its a liquid organic castile soap.

I also do one big shop at C4 or Co-Op once a month that consists of dried fruit and nuts, cereal, detergent, toiletries, whole fresh chickens, meat and fish (to divide then frozen in portions). I almost never buy sugar, rice, couscous or pasta on a monthly basis because I always get them in bulk then they last 2 months at the most. The same goes for toiletries so I only do weekly shopping for fresh fruit, veges, milk, DD's lunch box bits. Monthly big shop: AED700-1000 Weekly shopping: AED200-300 for two adults and a 6yr old. I make my own laundry and cleaning products as well as toiletries, so that saves a quite bit Is it easy? How do you make them? I can give you some to try if you like, not only saves you money about the third per wash as compared to reg powders, but easy on the environment and non toxic for your skin and body. ETA its quite easy to make the washing powder and dishwasher powder but you will not find the ingredients readily availble here so I have developed my own organic alternatives. The liquid soaps for personal use are not so easy to make. edited by Di@DXB on 03/06/2012

We (2 adults) eat lots of fish, fruit and dairy but little meat and spend about 500 a week on groceries, mostly shop at Geant or LuLu with a few items from Spinneys. I make my own laundry and cleaning products as well as toiletries, so that saves a quite bit and lets us indulge in things like organic salmon filets on a regular basis.

The Barsha police traffic dept which is near the Tasjeel (vehicle licensing dept) on the Sheikh Zayed road. ETA take the Dubai Garden centre exit and go right as you join the service road then straight until you pass through a small roundabout then its on the left. The exit off the SZR has a police dept signage. edited by Di@DXB on 03/06/2012

I bought a bag before but found it to taste bitter. Do any of the ones you cook have a bitter taste? Will try the quinoa in Spinneys? Is it a Spinneys brand? The one I buy in Spinneys is not bitter at all, sorry cannot recall the name of the brand. Went to look in the cupboard but I'm out of it right now.

Spinneys have quinoa, it could be that brand and I also think I have seen Bob's Red Mill products in Lulu hypermarket. I buy the one sold in Spinneys, its perfectly nice tasting and cooks well.

Im a bit annoyed by this to be honest .. its been carnage in and around the typing centres this week people struggling to meet the deadline and now they have extended it ... i envisage them extending it again ... ( i got mind done october last year ) Totally agree, its very annoying- I had to suffer the queques when my regular renewal coincided with the "final" deadline due to the rush of all the latercomers and now they extend it. So just had the whole process made more tiresome for no reason.

If you can be bothered, ask them the name of the flower shop that they're trying to call and where they got the number, then call them and let them know that they have the wrong number printed somewhere. Yes good idea thanks -I have tried to catch the name but the callers have all been a little unclear in English pronounciation, it must be a new shop somewhere thats misquoted my number.

Keep getting repeated phone calls on my home number from people who want to order flowers. Some just don't want to believe they have a wrong number and insist on asking what flowers I have in, I'm getting a bit tired of trying to explain it, so now I have put an answering machine on which says "If you are calling to order flowers you have the wrong number, this is not a flower shop, sorry to dissapoint you but we are a smile service. If you need a smile please leave a message after the tone and someone here will smile at you, if you are smiling already please have a nice day." Apologies to anyone here who is calling for flowers and gets through to my number.

I often use the local dairy brands and found they work quite well, last week bought Elle & Vivre and its hopeless, not sure if I have just a bad box or what, I was expecting it to be better as its more expensive. But whipped for ages and it never peaked whereas the local ones did so nice and quickly. which local brands? al Marai made in Dubai and Puck made in Saudi mostly I can't help myself. You can hardly call Puck a local brand as it is owned by arla (denmark, germany, sweden). Most of Pucks products are produced in Denmark and a few in Saudi, so far I have only seen cream produced in denmark. Sorry sorry When I said "local brands" I meant locally or regionally produced products, I was not referring to the country of origin of the company. I would expect that was pretty much understood, butcannot see the importance to this thread anyway. Had I known it was such an issue for you I would have been more detailed, however it was just a question about whipping cream opinons that I was responding to not a legal issue on company origins! Yes Puck is a German owned company- and it makes products in this region too! [b'>Production Products under the Puck® brand are produced at Arla’s dairy in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh.[/b'> source (http://www.arla.com/brands/our-brands/cheese/puck/) :\: Its not a big issue, but still I would like to buy fresh locally produced products myself, and I wouldnt call puck cream that. It says on the link you add: Products under the Puck® brand are produced at the four Danish dairies: Holstebro Flødeost, Bislev, Esbjerg and Branderup, and also at Arla’s dairy in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh. And on the two whipping creams I have on my fridge it says product of denmark, produced in Esbjerg. More just to point out that the cream is not local (none of the ones i bought at least) Yes the link I gave contained the words you quote as well as the words I quoted! Have not got you anything better to do? ETA watching the Tudors right now so gone into ye olde english :D edited by Di@DXB on 30/05/2012
