You can sell products you bought in bulk from anywhere at most of the school fairs that I know of. It does not usually have to be be things you made yourself with the exception of ARTE events that are only for handmade items made in Dubai. hth

Its easy, this is what I did, went to an optician that does the eye test and has the paper form rather than just the electronic one, as I wanted to finish the whole thing the same day. Took the completed form to the Barsha police centre and had the renewal done instantly, it took all of ten minutes there, you just need your old license passport and residence. They take the new pics.

Do you mean Dutch processed cocoa powder? I understand its low carb but its stripped of all the antioxydents so little goodness in it. Many brands are Dutch processed like Hintz for example which is available in most supermarkets.

You should speak to the bank (which you helpfully name) and to do otherwise I think you know would be at best dishonest and at worst illegal. I am rather shocked that people are proposing this on a public forum...financial fraud is in a different league than employing someone else's maid or a quick trip to barracuda. Is it technically fraud if she continues to pay at least the minimum monthly due as she says she intends to do?

Thanks for the link! Did you remove carbs and sugar only, or aslo sugar substitutes? I don't have a sweet tooth and don't drink soft drinks or coffee. I do however love carbs... especially pasta. Thinking that will be the hardest to kick to the curb. Need to clean out my pantry! Yes, gave up carbs too, only eat the good ones now like sweet potato ocassionally.

When does it start staying under 35C? Would be nice to be out there camping again without tumble-dryer weather. usually not until late September, but the weather has been changeable the last few years it has hardly cooled off like it used to in "winter."

You can work part or full time with your husband's permission under his visa for any company as an employee of that firm, its only if you want to run your own biz then you will need a trade license. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 28/05/2012</em>

Working under your husband's visa is not a trade license, its just a permission from your sponsor to work as far as I understand it, so not a loophole to needing a license to operate a business.

Exit from the Greens on to the SZR in the Dubai direction and take a u turn at the first flyover back into the AD direction. Take the first exit no 35 marked Media City/Internet City, the road bends to the right and keep straight until you reach a roundabout with Cisco on the corner, go left there and you are entering Knowledge Village, take left again at the first roundabout and continue down and park on the right hand side before you reach the next roundabout, building 12 is on the left and marked with a sign saying Medical Centre. ETA It took an hour to queue on Saturday when I was there, there were kids but nothing much for them there but to stand and wait, they may give you priority - go up to the guy on the typing door and ask. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 28/05/2012</em>

Thanks ladies. knew i cud always count on u. thanku for the info Di. wasn't aware of this. i always thought that higher the SPD,the better it is. so shud i go for banana boat less than 40? I would try to get the one that Morning Cat recommends, failing that then check the labels for any of the mentioned chemicals to avoid http://pediatrics.about.com/od/sunscreen/a/best_sunscreen.htm

I tried to read the earlier thread but their seems to be an issue with the link - could you re-ad it? We use water proof Banana boat Spray 50 SPF for swimming on our 1year old & it seems great - but I worried when I saw this & possible issues but found a link which says it's ok, phew. I had a suspected melanoma removed as a child myself - so our DS has Nivea 50 SPF for day use. Apparently EU allow up to 50, Australia 50 as below & the ROTW above. http://pediatrics.about.com/od/sunscreen/a/best_sunscreen.htm Had no idea it could be a problem so glad to have some awareness to the dangers - TY. Here are the previous posts "MorningCat Thank you Di@DXB for posting this important information. I would like to add that there are two main types of sunscreens out there: ones that work on a chemical basis and others that work as a physical barrier. The information you posted pertains to the first group (chemical). Although more research is warranted, but early studies do show the results that you have posted. Unfortunately, the most common sunscreens in the market are within this chemical group. The second group of sunscreens (physical barrier), are much much safer as their main ingredients are inactive and actually reflect the UVA and UVB rays from the skin (whereas the first group absorbs the rays then chemically deals with them). So, this 2nd group are much safer to use. They may leave more of a thin white layer on your skin, but safe is safe. To make sure you are buying a physical barrier sunscreen, look for the active ingredients: ZINC OXIDE and TITANIUM DIOXIDE. Using this type of sunscreen is extremely important for those who use sunscreen on a DAILY basis and on large parts of their skin. You should use sunscreen on your children every day, so it is also important to use this type of sunscreen for them. Again, thank you Di@DXB for posting. Everyone, be safe in the sun. " Di@DXB "56% of beach and sport sunscreens contain the chemical oxybenzone. The primary function of oxybenzone is to absorb ultraviolet light, but some research shows oxybenzone can be absorbed through the skin. The Environmental Working Group and other toxicology experts believe that oxybenzone is linked to hormone disruption and potentially to cell damage that may lead to skin cancer. To make the watchdog group's safe list, sunscreens must be free of oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate (a type of vitamin A), not have SPF above 50 and protect against UVA and UVB sunrays. Recently available data from an FDA study indicate that a form of vitamin A, retinyl palmitate, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions when applied to skin in the presence of sunlight (NTP 2009). This evidence is troubling, because the sunscreen industry adds vitamin A to 25 percent of all sunscreens. The industry puts vitamin A in its formulations because it is an anti-oxidant that slows skin aging. That may be true for lotions and night creams used indoors, but FDA recently conducted a study of vitamin A’s photocarcinogenic properties – the possibility that it can promote cancerous tumors when used on skin exposed to sunlight. The Bottom Line --Use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 and a maximum of SPF 50; --Make sure labels list UVA and UVB (or broad spectrum protection); --Avoid products containing oxybenzone and retinyl palminate if you're concerned about potentially toxic chemicals; --Choose lotions versus spray sunscreens for a more evenly distributed protection. Remember to apply at least 2 ounces of lotion (about a shot glass full) and reapply often. The sun breaks down the ingredients in sunscreen that protect your skin. Experts recommend reapplying every two hours, or after swimming or heavy sweating." http://edition.cnn.com/2012/05/16/health/sunscreen-report/index.html <em>edited by Di@DXB on 27/05/2012</em>

Again, Thank you Di@DXB for linking to the earlier thread. Please everyone read this earlier thread, as the information can be life-saving. I won't repeat myself but I am extremely passionate since I am dealing with melanoma currently, and I have never had a blistering sunburn nor over-exposed myself to the sun (e.g. sunbathing, tanning beds, etc.) and I have used sunscreens. So you can never be too careful, in my opinion. As far as I know, and I have also checked with my dermatologist, the physical barrier sunscreens are not easily available here. As far as I (and my dermatologist) know, there is only one brand sold here: DCL (Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories) UVA/UVB Chemfree superblock (very water resistant with mirconized zinc oxide), SPF 30. It is available at Super Care pharmacies only. Another note, that with physical barrier sunscreens, the grading of SPF is different. SPF 30 means it blocks 96% of rays, and is the highest SPF in the physical barrier range. If someone knows of other physical sunscreens that are available in Dubai, please post. Thanks for explaining it all so clearly and the recommendations, its so important as you say, to be aware of the risks. Hope all is well for you now.

Beware of 50+ sunscreens that contain harmful chemicals. Most well known brands use chemicals to achieve a higher protection factor, but current advice is its not neccessary to have in excess of 50+ PF. Especially for a child its better to go for a sunscreen that creates a physical barrier rather than a chemical barrier Its explained here http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=180401

Not seen blue Jello/Jelly in the shops, but its easily made by adding some Blueberry Juice to plain gelatine powder with sweetener of your choice. The result will be a little opaque but better tasting than store bought jelly. Alternatively if you want a crystal clear blue Jelly then just add blue food colouring to the dissolved sweetened gelatine.

A little off topic but went to H&M yesterday where there was a rack with a sign that said "TOPS 49 DHS". When I got to the register my top rang up as 99 DHS. I believe it was the manager who happened to be walking by and I said my item rang up incorrectly. We walk back to the rack, he looks at it and yes (in a condescending tone) that the 49dh price is for tops. And I said, yes what I have purchased is a top! He is a little embarrassed but still rude and starts digging frantically through the rack trying to explain that the tops start at 49dhs and go all the way up to 149dhs. I said that the sign was very misleading, it makes it seem to a customer that everything on the rack is 49dhs (sign should say "TOPS FROM 49 DHS). He continued to be rude to me so I just walked out of the store. So, buyer beware at H&M, check the price tag on the items themselves rather than relying on their sign. I won't be shopping there for quite a while after encountering such a rude & arrogant employee. edited by Kaba on 22/05/2012 and H&M have a no refund policy as well just in case you do go back!

Avoid shampoos with non organic ingredients, unfortunately even baby shampoos are full of toxic petrochemicals, read the labels because some of the so called organic ones have things like linalool, sls, sles and EDTA, all of which are chemicals best avoided by infants and children especially.

The theory may be good - try filling in the forms online! It is rubbish. Clearly not properly tested. It does not translate all to arabic - a key button is missing on one of the sections. Then if you do manage to get all filled in and try to save - up pops another question which will not translate. I am sick of trying to do this. I will have to take a day of work to take my kids passports to a typing centre just to achieve this simple form filling. I tried in january but had to renew the kids passports and naively hoped that although the eida had not answered my messages they might have tried to correct their site................ no chance. Thoroughly fed up as there is stuff all value in id cards for the kids - just a money making scheme- why cant it be done when residency visas fall due for renewal as a seamless process instead of this nonsense. Agree-why cannot this by tied to residency renewal, this deadline is creating havoc now for people like me who have the misfortune of their visa and ID being due for normal renewal exactly at the end of the deadline when all the latecomers are creating massive delays I have no option but to get caught up in the madness and rush and suffer long queues through no fault of my own. This is not fair.

Its amazing how what we tell our kids can be burnt into their minds and stay with them and effect their behaviour longterm. We never realise until they are adults and mention complexs about certain things until this day that our words have created. I think negative reinforcement about body parts is a bit risky.

Green and Blacks cocoa powder, plain/milk chocolate and ice cream Method cleaning and laundry stuff, she whole range (they used to do it here a few years ago but then it disappeared). Better dog food brands such as Orijen, Acana etc. Fresh ready to cook meals (like Waitrose/Marks and Spencer etc.), the meals with raw meat/fish/veg but it is prepared to just cook in oven (not pre cooked stuff you heat up), so my DH doesn't live off takeaways when I'm away. Fresh cream, Spinney's have started doing this now, but it is imported from Waitrose, surely the dairies can make cream locally? Decent bagels, decent smoked salmon (you can see where this is heading). [b'>And salt beef (Brass Rail, Selfridges style) I think of this every day and wish I could just pop out and get a good salt beef sandwich. Umm salt beef...[/b'> Oh, now you got me wanting one-used to have a salt beef sandwich at the Brass Rail every Weekend for years. Miss M&S fresh food too. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 18/05/2012</em>

This happens to me too all the time especially on weekends when people have visitors. I have left polite notes on the offending vehicles many times and the same car still takes my place. Its tempting to block them in but obstructing a vehicles access out of a place is actually illegal and the one being blocked could call the police and make a complaint against you, he would probably get away with what he had done by saying it was an innocent mistake taking your place while you could be fined for obstruction. Annoying I know. The best we can do if we cannot reason with these people is call the police and have the offending car removed.

There are three Dr Joy Clinics in Dubai, Jumeriah, Mirdiff and Karama. I have only been to the Jumeirah clinic with a root canal problem. I would not recommend the particular dentist I saw there, to be fair there could others at that same practice who are ok but I would never go there again. Had quite a horrendous experience that resulted in complications that required emergency surgery elsewhere.
