Oh, but it's the end of the month (=money is veeeery tight) ;) I just need a bit of yarn, maybe a set of needles. I only knit and crochet by now, I do not own a sewing machine, though I'm dreaming of it... ahhh.. If you don't want very expensive yarn in 100% natural fibre you can get really inexpensive sewing supplies from Daiso. They have stores in Lamcy Plaza, Oasis Centre and Ibn Battuta Mall. Do you maybe know where in Ibn Battuta? It's quite big, for a pregnant lady :p Daiso is at the Geant end, so with Geant on your left you walk on straight in the direction of the exit and its on your right hand side after a few shops. P.S. Not a huge range of "wool" (acrylic type) colours but quite a good selection of general sewing items, not sure if |I saw crochet hooks or not. I was looking for ant repellant, which they also did have btw! :) edited by Di@DXB on 21/10/2011

You need to contact shazman, she has posted a lot about this topic before. Not sure if you are allowed to keep hens in residential areas, it would depend on where you live. Anyway check out this thread http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=84639&Page=0

Do we need an Iban number for a UAE credit card aswell??? No, an IBAN number is simply the international format for account numbers.

where abouts in ibn battuta ? iv never seen a tailor in that mall ! Yes, its there but a bit hidden, you would never see it walking around becasue its down a service corridor. You go in near the Body Shop area and take the service corridor, at the end of that corridor you go left through doors, you will think you are going to the trash room! But don't worry you will see the tailors room right ahead. They are fine and very reasonable.

If you just want the hem taken up the tailor in IBN Battuta can do that, I use them for all those sorts of things, don't need to pay a dressmaker for that.

Some banks have the codes available to generate yourself on their home pages. You enter you account number and get the IBAN instantly. Check your bank web site.

What we found with international moving is that its very important to check that whatever company you use has a local office in the country of destination. Things went very wrong for us because although the packing service was good, the company we used did not have an office to handle arrival and onward transportation, they used a thrid party agent. This was problematic because the onward agent claimed they had not been paid for port charges, handling and delivery at all although we had paid the Dubai company in full for door to door Our entire belongings were held to ransom while the issue was argued to and fro and it took us a long time and many calls back to Dubai to get it sorted. Our belongings arrived 6 weeks later than planned which caused us enormous inconvenience.

Getting the IBAN number is the easy part, I have just spent best part of 1 hour on the phone to the "help" desk trying to ascertain how it gets applied to my standing orders, after being put on hold umpteen times cos she did'nt have a clue as to what the proceedure is for that, finally get through to another person at the second call attempt who tells me I have will to call to advise them of the IBAN numbers and instruct them by telephone before November 19th to apply it to each and every standing order. They will not apply it automatically, even though they issue it. Now the IBAN number is a zillion digits long, how and why this has to be conveyed verbally to a bank that clearly can't handle a simple query is really concerning me not to mention the possiblity of the person taking the number incorrectly over the phone. What a merry go round this is turning into :\:

For sure we get enough of these phoney phishing emails already without our banks helping the phishers by exposing our private email address! That's really unacceptable.

You may receive an email that looks like its from your bank asking you to click a link and input your banking info. These emails are phoney, you bank will not request you to do that, so if you receive such emails they are false so do not click on anything in them or give out any private banking coordinates to any email request, even if it apprears to take you to a website that looks like your bank. That is how phishing is done. edited by Di@DXB on 20/10/2011

I saw an antique type world map globe yesterday that I thought would make a nice gift for a man's desktop. It was in MOE the homewares shop just after C & B on the upper level 1. C4 end. Sorry don't recall the name of the shop. Also they had some amazing Christmas decorations there too, really lovely and different than run of the mill stuff.

Well it would not be acceptable if there was any kind of regualtion as to the lenght of time an employee can be forced to work. I don't know what the labout law is on that, maybe check and see where she stands, then talk to the agency if there's legal backing to object. Otherwise sadly they can probably do this with impunity.

and looks also VERY NICE!!!! I used once fake laskes...and I lost so many of my real lashes!!! I would like to try... Yes, this looks so much nicer than fake lashes, and only takes minutes to apply, its available in new Zealand right now for only 65 dollars too. Way cheaper than the artificial options we have here. http://www.lashme.co.nz/index.html edited by Di@DXB on 17/10/2011

very strange...why did they say no then?? i'll try again :-) I was told by Skynet not long along that they could collect money for me if I had a company account with them, either they have changed on that or the person was wrong. But you could try TNT I used to have them collect money for the company. So I know they used to do so.

The most cost effective courier I know here is Skynet, price will depend on where in the UAE the package or letter is going, for example its about Dhs30.00 to Sharjah depending on package size, from pickup in Dubai. But they will not collect the money for you unless you have an account with them, ie company account. hth

I'm sure that article is correct, and I remember hearing on the news last April that it is illegal for RAK virtual FZ companies to operate in Dubai. I know a lot of people are doing so anyway but legally a RAK FZ licence permits you to operate only in the RAK free zone. If you want to operate your business in Dubai you will need to have a local partner and a physical office in Dubai. That of course is going to cost a whole lot more than just the RAK deal. It seems there are beginning to crack down on this and you would be running a risk trading in Dubai on a RAK FZ licence alone. Suggest you do more research and double check before buying into these schemes.

I wonder what the response would actually be....I once spoke to the police at the airport about men taking surreptitious photos of various women and they said there was nothing they could do as it is not illegal to take photos of other people! To say I was shocked is putting it mildly. Perhaps if it were local women they would have acted differently. Perhaps if they hadn't been eating their McDonalds breakfast , ditto. Perhaps a different policeman might have acted differently. Perhaps because it is children...who knows.... That's totally amazing for the police to tell you its not illegal because it is absolutely illegal in the UAE to take photos of anyone without their knowledge or permission. You had every right to complain. or maybe it was because it was airside as well and certain laws of the land don't apply? Could be, that would explain their attitude. Would have thought same rules apply even airside, what about if someone photographed local ladies in that area - the police would do nothing :\:

If you are coming in on the Al Ain Road you stay on it until it becomes the OudMetha Road, then at the Wafi intersection (which is just after you see al Wasl hospital on the right) you take a left in the Karama direction but do not take the right slip road into Karama, just go straight until you reach the intersection with Sanaa fashions onthe right, take a right there and carry on straight until until you reach the Centerpont intersection and take a right in the Karama direction. It is signed Karama there. Stay straight and at the signal where there is no striaght on, take a left, stay in the the extreme left and take the first U turn, pass the fire station and take the second service road in front of the big supermarket. Park as near as you can to the supermarket as the dentist is in that building. I take it you are going to dr. M? hth :) edited by Di@DXB on 13/10/2011

Depends what service you are using, for regular air mail you need to wrap the package properly and put the address on the wrapping. If you are going to use EMS then they will put your package inside a plastic pouch and they will label it with the address for you. However I would not recommend sending stuff via the post off at all, the regular mail is not that reliable and even the EMS service is not worth the extra or the bother of going to the post office when you can use a courier like Skynet for the same money and have it picked up and delivered door to door very quickly. As a comparison for you here is the Emirates post rate calculator where you can check regular parcel post cost and EMS costs http://tinyurl.com/d27gm9 Here are Skynet contact details so you can ask about price for your destination http://www.skynetworldwide.net/ You will find EMS and Skynet the same per weight to the UK for example. I always use Skynet and never had any problems but with EMS I have had several things lost and delayed. ps. I also use Skynet regularly to Oz. Same cost as EMS too but gets there! edited by Di@DXB on 13/10/2011

Yes- my DD took king and queen size bought here back to Oz, bought sheets at Big W and they fit, you can get really beautiful 1000 thread count sheets there for a fraction of what you pay here too and the sizes fit fine, see here for sizes and types. Got these in the sale at Big W for AUD40! http://tinyurl.com/63ld7bq p.s When you are looking for the sheets/linen dept in the stores in Oz it is called "Manchester." I guess this is a throw back to the days when Manchester UK was a hub of the linen industry. edited by Di@DXB on 12/10/2011

Yes I always lock my suitcases. How scary is that I guess it makes no difference if you do or do not lock your suitcases! [b'> DI@DXB The only solution would be to have it shrink-wrapped at the airport before you check it in[/b'> Do all airports around the world provide this service? Or is it just in Dubai airports? edited by Fr!zzyBusY on 12/10/2011 Not sure if its available at all airports globally but you could wrap the bags at home as another person suggested.
