was actually trying to give her some help but hey ho, wont bother now as it's not something i can post on here. edited by Princess_I on 06/07/2011 Much appreciated, but hope you understand that considering the situation I have experienced I may be a little over cautious seeing that you just signed up with EW today. I would not in any situation regardless, ever respond to posters seeking personal contact. Thank you for your concern but the nature of the internet makes it difficult. All the best. And I would advise it in your best interests for you to remove your email address. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 06/07/2011</em>

Sorry don't mean to be rude but I am unable to email you directly, even if you get any email purporting to be from me there is no way you can be sure it is from me. Only posting here will be certain in that respect.

Hmmm, I had followed your thread on that. That's really bizarre. Was it just a matter of them typing in your license plate number and all that info came up? If it's that easy, that IS really worrying. spelling* edited by natalie8 on 06/07/2011 Yes, that's what he did, just typed in the registration number and accessed all my private data via the ATM QQ machine.

I've been all over the net looking for these. Their home page doesn't even list their gas station locations. :\: I've heard (from hubby) that Enoc does the exterior wash, plus engine shampoo, underside wash and inerior cleaning for only 45 dirhams. I want to get this done, but I'm not sure where to go where they have the car wash. Areas that are easy for me are: Mirdif, Wafi, Festival City or near any of these that are easy to find!!!! Thanks for any help. ;) If you are going to use a car wash that has got a Quick Quote machine installed in the waiting room I suggest you have your husband take the car there and do not go yourself. The one near MCC has, so I would avoid it for the reasons given before. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=152615

That's a bit extreme!! A passport is a travel document, nothing more and Chocs01 might actually like to be able to move around the world! I am British but I do not particularly want to return to the UK, it is a shambles right now and I fear it has gone beyond the point of repair, but that doesn't mean I don't value being British. I still have the right to choose if I want to reside there, and right now I just don't agree with the system and don't see any benefit of being there. I see so many of my friends struggling to keep things going in the UK, spending hours commuting in and out of central London to work, and then I read about the Somalian family with 7 children living in a 2.1 million Kensington town house at a cost of 1800 pounds a month to the state for the house alone, then factor in the benefits for them and their 7 children because neither parent is working! And don't even let me start on the attitude of the work-shy/lazy Brits created by the lovely Labour benefits system, is it any wonder that hardworking people do not want to pay into the system, when they receive very little benefit in return! Exactly! And if she had to "reliquish her passport" then she would be stateless and could apply for refugee status in the UK and probably live in a 2.1 million Kensington home!

e-coly from Egypt? last night we ate some salad from tomatoes from Egypt.... Are you avoiding some veggies? Where do you bay your veggies and do you eat them not cooked? My LO is only 2,5 and loves all sorts of veggies and to be honest I am starting to take this e-coly thing seriously... EU investigators have confirmed now that the cause of the E coli outbreak that killed 49 in Germany was 'caused by Egyptian fenugreek seeds' Clearly Egypt has a sprouted seed industry even if it not a product that Egyptians use nationally in their diet, well fortunately so for them. Investigators have traced the source to a single shipment of seeds exported from one supplier in Egypt. Other lots of fenugreek imported from Egypt during the period 2009 to 2011 may be implicated," the food safety authority said. "The contamination of seeds with the STEC O104:H4 strain reflects a production or distribution process which allowed contamination with faecal material of human and/or animal origin. Reuters - London July 6. The UAE has taken measures to ensure no such imports get through to consumers here, but personally I am a lot more concerned with the local produce I see on the supermarket shelves here, I stopped buying lettuce, cucumbers and courgettes long ago when I noticed lumps of faecal matter stuck to locally produced veggies on supermarket shelves. There also seems to be a link between Tricolsan and resistant strains of e-coli. Whether this accounts for the sudden emergence of this outbreak remains to be seen, but the current advice is to avoid toothpastes in particular that contain Triclosan as the chemical will remain in the mouth for as long as 12 hours after use. Triclosan is found in anti bacterial products as well as toothpaste and toiletries and has been found to cause cell mutation that renders the Triclosan unable to get to the target site to kill the bacteria because the bacteria and the pathway have changed form. http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/~w3chm140/PBL/PBL3/index.html <em>edited by Di@DXB on 06/07/2011</em>

as the article says most expats won't be affected: "The majority of expats are likely to remain unaffected by the changes unless they spend more than 90 days in the UK a year" I believe that's working days, well that's how I read it .... anyhoo if they are in the UK for 90 days they can then legally claim child benefit ... oops that was a separate thread! The article said 20 days, is that right or is it 90?

Just for the avoidance of any doubt, Didxb, I didn't call you nonsense, I said the advice you are giving is nonsense. It was in no sense intended to be taken as a personal insult; I didn't realise English isn't your first language, sorry. You were the one who raised issues of shower frequency, not me. I wouldn't have thought that the issue of what is a more energy efficient approach is a matter of opinion, rather one of fact. Incidentally, you didn't answer my question about the kettle. shower issue- [b'>I DID NOT IN A PERSONAL CONTEXT TO YOU[/b'>[u'>[/u'> OMG I did not respond on your scientific theory regarding the kettle. But FYI I do not heat my shower water in a kettle, it really would take way tooo long. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 06/07/2011</em>

I copied and pasted the advice for you. In the body of the post. And there are several other similar sources which say the same thing - but hey if you want to believe you're right, don't let me stop you; am just concerned at you convincing other people of the same nonsense. This is a public forum and everyone is free to express and hold thier views, so perhaps you can respect that and refrain from being offensive to others simply becasue they have views you dissagree with. edited by Di@DXB on 05/07/2011 err, right, who was the one who was being offensive? If you can provide any reputable support from your views, or any actual science behind them, I'd be interested to hear them - but please note I'm not casting aspersions on how often you shower or anything else; I'm just finding it difficult to debate the issue when you are not reading what is said. Quote "err, right, who was the one who was being offensive?" [b'>err, YOU for calling me NONSENSE![/b'> [b'>and YOU again for bringing up how many times I shower.[/b'> You don't appear to be reading what I said- 1. I think usage is a factor in energy consumption. That's my view becasue I was told so by a professional. 2. I am entitled to hold any option I like. 3. I do not have to submit scientific evidence to YOU to be entitled to have an opinion.

Am posting here in hopes that those who take zoloft regularly can help. Have someone visiting soon who takes zoloft and zyrtec and is worried about bringing them in. I saw on another thread someone brought a supply of zoloft in, so I'm guessing its allowed? If not, can someone recommend a doctor where my guest can get a prescription for it? She is terrified of having problems at the airport, would rather see a doctor here if they are forbidden substances. Thanks. Here is the list of Restricted Medications as provided by the US embassy. Zoloft is on the list. According to the advice given on the US website you may carry listed items into Dubai providing you have a doctor's prescription that has been attested by a notary public, and duly authenticated by both the secretary of state of one’s U.S. state, and finally also authenticated by the Secretary of State of the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. I guess same proceedures would apply for attestation if arrivng from other countries. http://abudhabi.usembassy.gov/restricted_medication_.html <em>edited by Di@DXB on 05/07/2011</em>

OK, so why does the UK National Energy Foundation (for one) say that this is a myth? &lt;&lt;3. It's wisest to leave your immersion heater on 24 hours a day MYTH This one is easy. It is always best to place the water heating on a timer, as the energy lost from a hot water tank depends on the temperature difference between the surface of the tank and its surroundings. It's a common myth that it somehow takes more energy to keep heating up a tank than to maintain it at a high temperature. Of course, as with all the urban myths on this page, there are a few "ifs" and "buts". If the tank is highly insulated (so standing losses are very low) and there is an effective thermostat on the tank, then the losses through leaving it on can be much reduced. And some people have a need for large quantities of hot water all day long, in which case they may have no alternative to leaving the immersion heater on. But in general, it is much better to install a timer - a heavy duty one, suitable for immersion heaters, should cost less than £20 and if you can fit it yourself safely, could pay for itself in a few months: an excellent energy efficiency investment. &gt;&gt; http://www.bath.ac.uk/estates/energy/The%20National%20Energy%20Foundation%20-%20Energy%20Advice%20-%20Saving%20Energy%20-%20Urban%20Myths.htm I am referring to the kind of heaters I and most people usually have here in Dubai which do not have timers and are not well insulated nor energy efficient appliances. Exactly. Did you actually read the advice above? What we have here in Dubai are immersion heaters (so, as discussed) don't have timers (so you have to be the timer yourself and switch them on and off) and the tanks aren't well insulated (so the caveat that the extra energy used by having them on all day is minimised doesn't apply). I.e. it uses less energy to switch them on and off as required. Your link did not work so no I did not read it. But I still think the usage is a factor. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 05/07/2011</em>

Regardless of what is best costwise, I couldn't stand leaving my water heaters on all the time as the cold water is never cold enough to make it possible to have a shower in the summer without being scalded. Agree, mine is kept off completely for all the summer months.

@oursouls Agree, and because of all the reasons you have outlined it would be in the public interest if DM were to issue a list naming those establishments that have failed their inspections, particularly since the percentage is so high. Having the information as to the degree of the problem is of no help to anyone if we do not know which suppliers are in the 3% of places that have passed health and hygeine standards.

Please don't switch on and off your water tanks, it makes no difference to your bills. :) Actually it does makes adifference, if you keep switching the heaters off and on it is usually more expensive to do that than to leave them on all the time. It takes a lot of electricity to heat up a tank from cold as oppossed to the heater being on and it just keeping the water up to temp with occasional boosts of power. edited by Di@DXB on 05/07/2011 If you google it, you will find many many reputable web sites dismissing this as a myth - on the same principle, you don't keep your kettle on all the time. Far better just to heat up when you need it (though why water heaters NEVER seem to come with timers here escapes me - have wondered about the possibility of putting them in!) My advice is on the given that you are having a shower or bath every day, in that case it is cheaper to leave it on all the time. I was told this by a reputable heating engineer in the UK. If you are only draining the tank with a shower once a week then it might be appropriate to only switch it on for each use as you suggest.

I had a much longer reply written, but have decided to leave it at...I think it's a shame you're not taking this further. Not knowing what is was you were going to say I will try to explain my decision although its not possible to say as much as I want on a public forum- being where we are. I understand your disappointment, if this was somewhere else in the world I would not hesitate to take the matter up with the authorities. You only need to read the news to know that innocent women who make accusations often end up being accused of wrongdoing themselves. Cannot really explain that in more detail. Hope you understand. I have done as much as I have been advised to do, I have written to the head office of the company concerned to alert them to the misuse of data held on their systems and I intend to write to the head office of the petrol company to alert them to the lapse of security being conducted by tenants on their premises. Hopefuly this will result in stricter regulation. [b'>I repeat my warning to all lady drivers to avoid using petrol stations that have these machines.[/b'> I think it was a horrendous mistake for the insurance company to be allowed to link their public quick quote machines to the RTA where all our personal data is on record. All it takes is for a woman to drive into a car wash where one of these machines is manned and her complete personal data can be accessed by an unscrupulous attendant without her knowledge. This is akin to stalking. We all can spread the word about the risks posed be the lack of safeguards in this particular electronic service when it falls into the wrong hands, it may come to the attention of someone in authority who will ensure that changes are made to prevent such 'characters' from misusing the system data and subjecting women at to this sort of threat. You are right to be concerned. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 03/07/2011</em>

If I were you I would sit down and write everything down that happened so far with times and dates. It is a good record to keep in case someone doubts your version of events, it is something concrete to give to police in case you decide to make a case, and it will calm you down, knowing you have record of everything. If you can, get the guy's name from the garage manager and if you see him again take a photo (without him knowing of course) and get his car registration. Even if you decide to do nothing, you have everything on record should he bother you again. Good suggsstion Ansie, thank you- I will document everything for my own record. I spoke to my family, their advice (based on what they have read in the media) is not to do anything unless I intend to leave the country. They feel at the minimum it will be a complete waste of time, considering who the person is, for me to persue this as it is a "I said he said" situation to which I have no hard evidence at all, and one which could easily be turned against me with some trumped up version of events from the offending party to cover his wrongdoing. So I am going to leave it at that and would advise lady drivers to use car washes in places where there are no such machines to be safe from this kind of privicy invasion. Many thanks to all who have helped me think this through. I would have probably be completely out of my skull by now if I had not had you all to turn to.

If the police make a good case against him and he ends up in jail I would think he'd be deported straight after his jail term. Yes true, but that would only happen if he were a foreigner though, he appeared to be from here. That is another concern and adds to the difficulty I have in deciding what is the best thing to do. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 02/07/2011</em>

Di...I'd go to the police/Al Ameen with what you know. This man has no right to access this information, certainly no right to discuss it publicly with another man, no right to harass you etc etc. In your complaint, the police will be made aware that he had access to your address etc and I'm sure they will make sure he won't have an opportunity to use this against you. Don't let him get away with this. [b'>It sounds like there is no good reason why he read your info so that suggests he's up to no good[/b'>.[/b'>Agree with that completely. I think I will call my family back home and see what they think first.

Finally got to the bottom of this although it does not leave me feeling any better. I went to the gas station this morning, he was not there but I spoke to the supervisor on duty today. Unlike the other manager of two days ago this one knew who he is, and confirmed that he is not an RTA official. She said he is the person responsible for the Quick Quote machine! She added he is a very arrogant and crazy person, she said he is only allowed to access the car insurance details and not the personal data, seems she had had some kind of a run in with him herself. So for the last few days I have been calling the number of “person responsible for the machine” after the first gas station manager gave it to me, not realizing it was the person who was the cause of my worry. Clearly if his intentions in searching up my plate number was only to sell me insurance he could have just told me he was from the insurance company when I confronted him two days ago, instead of lying and pretending he was from the RTA. This makes me very suspicious. Obviously the guys who man these machines can somehow access a whole lot of personal data beyond the car details even though its not their job or authority to do so. Now I am left with the dilemma of whether or not its in my best interests to involve the police and have them confront him with impersonating an RTA official and ask him why he is searching out personal data of ladies cars there. What would be the end result possibility of such a complaint? He may be arrested and charged, maybe do a spell in jail or get fined or fired. After which he would be free to wreak revenge on me which would be fairly easy for him as he has my address and other personal ID details. I at now at a loss to know whats best to do next and really need some advice on what’s the best for my protection.

I'd feel far more uncomfortable, in fact unsafe, ever going anywhere near that man on my own. Please don't approach him again. If you really want to find him, perhaps have a trusted male companion with you and be ready to call the police as soon as you see him. No need to approach this man again...let the police handle it. Thanks Green-ish, I was just on my way out to have a quick recce when I saw your comment, considering your advice think I will just see if I can take his pic on my mobile if he's there now and then try to call a friend to accompany me before I make another approach or call al ameen.

Agree with others I am surprised you were focused so much on your hurt feelings rather than finding out what and why he really does. You can stop him in whatever he is doing as it does sound fishy. When he said he works for RTA you could have asked what is he exactly doing and why. Ask for ID. Call RTA from your mobile right there. etc. I am quite sure he is not RTA so by questioning him about his "job" you can confront him quickly. I do not think that your husband being there helps any ways. What I would do not even talking to him next time just take a few good zoomed photos of his face from a distance and go to police and report. If you can see which is his car and get the number plate even better. Also, if he is there so often the petrol station people may know him. This is getting very exciting, please keep us posted Mrs Sherlock Holmes!! Yes, I may have been overcome with emotion and obvioulsy not thinking clearly due to being so taken aback. I went there again twice today, both morning and pm, and he was not around. I have done as much as I knew how to try to find out who he is including asking him to his face. I agree it was a huge mistake yesterday not to think of asking for ID when he said he works for the RTA, but it did not occur to me to double check because I did not imagine he was lying about something like that. I guess I am just too trusting. It was a real shock for me this morning to be told there is no RTA employee at that station. So now I will have to just keep looking out for him. Perhaps he is hiding now since I questioned who he was, maybe he fears I have followed up with more enquires, which indeed I have done when I called the RTA this morning. Unfortunately they could not take the matter forward without his details. I do not want to go to the police station; I don't think it’s a good place for a single lady to alone. If I can find him again I will ask for ID and if he does not produce any I will call al Ameen immediately. Will keep you posted, meantime I suggest ladies keep your personally registered cars away from places that have Quick Quote machines.

Just checked this out with RTA, they confirmed that they have NO employee at that or any other gas station, and said even if they had it would not be his job to run checks on the Quik Quote insurance machine nor are they permittied to divulge customer information. They also said they do not hold that extent of info either. They said without his details they could do nothing nor could any other authority and suggest I try to find the guy again and ask him for his ID. So ladies beware there obviously are unauthorised people around who can hack the info out of these machines.

Our whole apartment has been woken up by ridiculously loud roaring engines. I thought it was 2.30am, but it's actually 3.30am I wonder why the police dont ever arrest these people? Oh well, I expect the terrors will be round again in half an hour after they've done the posing lap around the front of JBR. Have fun lads!!! :-( roll on October and getting out of this place. never ever will live in JBR again!!! SK apologies to the youngsters if these turn out to be old idiots Amazing that this disturbance is still going on after all the public complaints all over the media. Like the apology! Well at least you are leaving and perhaps when all the flats are deserted they will realise they need to put a stop to this kind of public nuisance. Meantime, have you tried 'white noise' and or earplugs, I know it may not help that much but perhaps it would lessen it some?

How utterly insensitive! I know exactly how you feel, to be compared negatively to any other woman really hurts, we did not create ourselves or choose our looks, it’s an extremely callous thing for a man especially a husband to do to his wife. I would tell him too that he is totally lacking in emotional intelligence and there’s no plastic surgeon in the world who can give him a fix for that!

What has happened today then? Sorry spongemonkey- I only saw your follow up question today, thanks for asking, now to explain what has been “resolved”. I spent the last two days trying to get to the bottom of this. First off I went back to the petrol station and complained to the person in charge but was just referred back to the insurance company. So after emailing into the complaints address, I tried to call the insurance company directly to speak in person but none of their numbers answered including landline and their Hotline! Incidentally I kind of wonder how they sell any insurance. Anyway, I then found the direct number online of the Quik Quote service., but that number never picked up either. I went back to the petrol station and got from the staff there the mobile number of the Quick Quote guy who they said was responsible for that machine. His mobile never picked up either. That having failed I have been revisiting the petrol station every day and this afternoon 'bingo' I saw the guy there again hanging round the machine. So this time I got up the courage to go and speak to him and asked "Excuse me but do you recall the other day when you keyed my car registration number into the quick quote ATM and then spoke out my name, nationality and sponsor name in front of everyone in the car wash waiting room?" He replied, "What is your problem?" I tried to explain that I was totally shocked at having my personal details broadcast publicly to a room full of strangers and would he mind telling me who he is and why he did that. He said "I am RTA and it’s my job." So I asked "It’s your job to search people's car numbers as they have their cars washed and then announce their private details to all and sundry???" No response. I asked him how would you like it if your wife came home and said some guy in a gas station had just broadcast her full name, the name of the place where she worked and her nationality to everyone standing around? You would be mad right? ‘Yes’ he said, but maybe it did not happen. I said, “If this did not happen why do you think I am have come here to speak to you about it now? How would I be complaining to you of something that never happened which you have just admitted to me is your job??” Then to my utter amazement he says’ So what do you want now with me, you want to do something with me?’ I really began to lose my temper at this point and said “EXCUSE ME? WTH are you insinuating?’ You may have noticed that when you divulged my personal details to the room I did not speak to you, its not my habit to speak to strange men and I have been worried and scared ever since this whole incident and now am really shocked to find you work in an official capacity. Then he says “Sorry.” I replied “I hope you will not be doing likewise to any other ladies who come into the car wash.” The End In future I will have my car washed at the mall!

Have you reported this at all, Di@DXB? Not wishing to upset you, but I'd be really worried if this had happened to me and would have been on the phone to the police like a shot.. Thanks simpleasabc, I have reported it, and yes it is very disturbing, just hope I will manage to get off to sleep tonight! And many thanks to all here for their good advice and concern :) <em>edited by Di@DXB on 27/06/2011</em>

Have to agree Di, very bizarre and most alarming. It may have been an idea to test the machine yourself afterwards just to see if it would do the same for any plate number. Did you get the idea the men knew you were in the room and trying to spook you out, or maybe they were trying to find out whose car for another reason? Can't think what, but maybe to buy it or something banal like they are looking to buy something similar and want to know how much it would cost... ok sounds lame but I'm coming up blank anywhere else! Yes, I thought about that afterwards, and I will go back tomorrow and try the machine myself, I could not have done so at the time as they were crowding round it, not that I was thinking that far anyway. They definately knew I was in the room, I was sitting just 10 feet from them. But if they just wanted to buy my car why did they not ask me directly instead of this weird behaviour. I don't get it either.

Why are you leaving this to the morning before doing anything about it? The Insurance company who the machine belongs to is closed now.

I agree it must have been a shock, but can't understand why you didn't speak up? I did not want to get into conversation with them and I was really in too much shock to think about a course of action at the time.

lol i am sure if you asked them they will probably give you more info like your number, where you hang about etc :D I am having difficulty understanding what is "lol" worthy about it, I don't know of any women who would not understand how disturbing it would be to have a man who is a complete stranger announce their name, the name of the company they work for, their residence and nationality publicly in a room full of other people, are you sure you are a woman?
