Sounds like he's trying to get an extra month - the cheques will be dated from 11th feb anyway so just tell him you can't do that but will give him the cheques dated 11th feb a week early that should keep him quiet.

Thanks Claire, that's really helpful, this had crossed my mind too. You don't happen to know any good reliable garages in the Epsom area do you?! No I dont but what I did was go onto www.eyp.co.uk (yellow pages) and type in car garages and I just called and asked the 2nd one I called said yes and I used them every year from then. We should meet up when you come over I'm not too far from Epsom! edited by Clairehdp on 09/01/2012

You need to set up a temporary guardianship if you are an expat here. If both of you die the children will be placed in care until a family member can get over. We had a guardianship drawn up with 2 close friends named as the temporary guardians to avoid this happening. It's a legal document and gives full permission for either of these people to look after your children until a family member can get to Dubai to take over the care of the children. My understanding was that they were only taken into care if both parents died. They would be looked after by the surviving parent but this was for us and we are from the uk I'm not sure if the rules are different for other nationalities. edited by Clairehdp on 09/01/2012 edited by Clairehdp on 09/01/2012

Surely it's the fault of the hospital to have agreed to this in the first place. If they had not been so greedy and just said no there would not be this issue. I only read that she had paid to take over an entire floor of the hospital if this housed the NICU then someone at the hospital has ballsed up.

We left our car in the uk and I sed to call our local garage and get the keys dropped off with them and they would pick up the car liaise with me if work was needed I would pay by credit card on the phone and they would deliver the car back to our house with new mot. Try calling a garage close to you and see if they can do that for you. Not sure if you have left keys with someone in the uk but that's what I did and it worked fine each year. I am now back in uk in Surrey and if you are close by I'd be happy to help from here if you like.

If it's your first renewal he can't do that anyway - if your contract is a renewable contract you have every right to stay at the same rent so.......if it was me and you have had enough of him anyway - I'd get him to foot your removal costs. I would absolutely make sure that potential tenants know that he doesn't deal with the maintenance and that he's kicking you out after 1 year...... if he withholds your deposit for any reason get down to the rent committee because he is breaking their law by getting you to leave and trying to put your rent up on a first year renewal - they'll throw the book at him.....

a friend mentioned that it could be distracting and not so great for Homewk research online An iPad offers no greater distractions than a laptop. Conversely there's nothing you can do with a laptop that you can't do on an iPad, but for proper research use and for typing up essays or whatever, you really want a proper keyboard. You can use a Bluetooth keyboard with an iPad, but it's best to think of the iPad as an adjunct to, not a complete replacement for, a laptop. There are quite a few things you can't do on an iPad I often have to use my laptop to view stuff that I can't view in the iPad. Love love the iPad and am on my 2 nd one - wouldn't be without it but still need the laptop.

Just spoke to RERA who have said by law it is 3 months notice and it doesn't matter whether they are registered with RERA or not, but am not sure I believe them, I know RERA side with landlords. Contract doesn't say anything. RERA do not side with Landlords......i have no idea where you are getting your information from. We have had to fight a number of times when landlords have given us notice to quit. Tenants are pretty well protected in Dubai - He needs to give you a years notice if he wants the property back to move into himself. He just can't chuck you out and re-rent to someone else. If he uses the old chestnut moving family in he needs ot prove this totally. I have always gone to the Rent Committee (none of our contracts were registered) and they have been super helpful. As you have kept to your end of the contract by advising him of your wish to renew (i hope you have proof of this) and that he had accepted (again hopefully you can prove this) then he has to give you one years notice to quit..... Good luck - don't back down he clearly is unaware of the legalities.

I've never heard of that tradition - we do the carrots for ALL the reindeer not just Rudolph (no special cases in our house even with the red glowing nose). Cookies for Santa and my son insists on chocolate milk instead of white for Santa "cause everyone else will give him white and he needs the sugar for energy" :D He's definitely my kid  Santa leaves his "report" card on the kids and last year he left coal - he's never done that before - an onion yes, but never coal. Not sure if they'll be getting coal again this year - there were some eyebrowing raising moments that I'm sure the kids are hoping slipped under Santa's watchful eye. Love this time of year - love the traditions we are passing on to our kids. Lots of fun!!! We do the same inside - we have a special tray - carrots for the reindeer - mince pie for santa and a slug of brandy to keep him warm!!!!! We buy fake snow and put it down by the chimney (or air con vents!!!!) and my husband puts his biggest boots on for big foot prints. We then sprinkle some icing sugar by the reindeer tray and with our fingers make reindeer paw prints so it looks like they've put their paws up on the table to have their nibble of carrot! It's a very busy time in our house on Christmas Eve and the nicest way to end my birthday! I really, really love Christmas and with the kids it's just that extra magical and special.

My little boy was really into Lego (still is!) at 6. Also loved anything Star Wars. Also has had the Guinness book of world records for a number of years and loves to get stuck into that or have it read out to him. My little girl who is just 7 loves all the Littlest Pet shop toys. The big craze in the UK are the moshi monsters which she adores. Hama beads are a great hit too. You can get all on amazon and get them to gift wrap!

He is perfectly free to sell his property but he sells it with tenants. He has to give you 12 months notice to evict you - fact. He can place the property on the market and sell but the people buying must know that you will be staying on. this happened to us and our LL thought we would vacate - he backed down when we explained that we had been to the rent committee and he needed to give us 12months notice to quit. He did sell and we got a new landlord..... you have rights. Sent the documents to the egent if they are the ones you are dealing with. If you hve proof that it was delivered to them that will be fine as it will be up to them to contact the owner.

Hi Dubaigirl, We just moved into Alvorada 2 months ago, we love it here. As you say the development is newer in certain areas such as Alvorada, Mirador, Le Collection. I would totally agree with clairehdp, bills depend upon the size of garden house etc, but we just paid 3,500 for a DEWA bill for 6 weeks and this included a sprinkler system for the garden and pool. If you have not secured a realtor yet I can highly highly recommend the one we used he was WONDERFUL! And let me tell you I tried a few before meeting Adam, and heis a breath of fresh air in comparison to the others. He secured a wonderful deal for us on a wonderful house. If you would like further details let me know. We love living here, and if you have dogs they will love it too, as EMAAR are one of the few developments which welcome them :) Wait until you get your June/july/august bills with your air con on!!!!

It will depend on how big your garden is and if you have a pool but our Dewa bills were much much higher than 3k but we had a really big garden. All the communities you mention are lovely. we were in La Coleccion and it was very friendly, safe and easy to get into and out of the ranches. I have friends in the other communities and they are all nice.

When they had a warehouse sale I bought clarkes school shoes for 50 dhs a pair!!!! I bought enough for the next 2 years!!!!! They don't sell school shoes any,re but definitely worth asking them especially if they get rid of them for 50 dhs!!!

Oh, heck, I hope it's not snowing/settling in South London. You're nearby in Surrey or Hants, aren't you, Claire? Yes - it's eased off I think it's too wet to settle for long as it really rained in the night - but it's pretty magical and the look on the kids faces was sooooo funny this morning - Ski Dubai never hits the button on real snow. give me a few days and I'm sure I'll be cheesed off with it all and looking forward to being back in Dubai! But......for the moment - if you're coming over pack the Uggs and ski jackets!!!!!!

Lovely ideas. I shall try the make ahead gravy. Regarding the turkey, I think in the UK it would still be warmish inside houses, after all they will have had the central heating on forever (as long as they can afford). Personally I think I shall take my turkey out the fridge when I get up early on christmas morning to have a pee (blush). My question though is roasties. having to peel enough potatoes for 10 on Christmas morning is freaking me out. DH and DS are obsessed with roasties, and so are my visitors, I can see me peeling 10kgs of potatoes. So ........ can I do any prep for them the day before? I normally peel, par boil, rough them and then cook in goose fat. I wouldn't chance doing the potatoes the day before. A friend of mine did that as she had 20 coming and thought it would be a great idea - when she got up in the morning they had turned black and she was completely stuck. I will never forget her panicked phone call around all her friends trying to beg some potatoes! Not worth chancing - plus the potatoes there can be a bit hit and miss. I would invest in a couple of the veggie peelers and make it a family peeling session - you'll rattle through them if a couple of you do them together. The best peeler I got was from Spinneys - it's short and stubby with a fat black handle - peels potatoes and carrots in seconds!
